Abstract:When node density of vehicle Ad-hoc network (VANET)is high,the number of channel collisions increases occurrence of congestion in VANET. To solve this problem,a dynamic power control algorithm is proposed. The network condition of nodes is evaluated by the value of channel busy ratio (CBR ). In case of network congestion,the congestion information is flooded,so that other nodes can adjust transmission power accordingly. Moreover,a power control function is designed,in which power coverage and the number of covered nodes are considered. The simulation results show that this method can adaptively adjust the transmission power and performs well in reducing the probability of channel overload and improving the packet reception rate.

Abstract:As an effective technique to achieve low power in Ad Hoc network, the Joint Power Control and Routing (JPCR) has recently attracted a lot of interests. In most existing papers, RF transmission energy is considered as the major energy cost for frame delivery. However, the measurement results show that RF transmission power is only a neglectable fraction of the total power consumption of a Wireless Network Interface Card (WNIC). The fact implies that existing JPCR algorithms may not bring the supposed energy saving. In this paper, we adopt an accurate but efficient model to describe the power consumption behavior of a transmission power controllable WNIC, based on which the minimal energy cost of frame delivery and QoS constrained optimal transmission power level are formulated aiming at lowing down the total energy consumption of WNIC. Furthermore, we investigate the significant impact when considering the total energy consumption instead of only the RF transmission energy. In contrast to previous transmission energy minimized schemes that tend to span the path onto a large set of very short hops, the WNIC energy optimal JPCR reaches a tradeoff between the number of hops and the length of hops.

Abstract:Issues such as the hidden and exposed terminal problems and limited traffic carrying capability still remain unsolved in wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper, we present a novel MAC protocol employing power control. Our design mainly focuses on alleviating the problems of the hidden and exposed terminals and enhancing spatial reuse. We introduce an effective power control scheme to facilitate the power negotiation between the source node and the receiver node. Our protocol can collaborate well with high layer protocols such as AODV in the multi-hop scenarios. We implement our protocol in OPNET environment and study the parameters to optimize its performance. Our preliminary simulation results indicate that, with properly chosen parameters, our protocol works well and achieves considerably high performance in both sparse and dense ad hoc networks.

Abstract:Medium access control(MAC)protocol is one of the most important factors which affect MANET's performance.Characteristics of power control MAC combined multiple channel in MANET are described and analyzed in formalization language.The NS-2 simulations revealed that introducing proper multi-channel technique into MANET can effectively decrease packets collision among nodes which transmit radio with different power,and prolong the life time of nodes and network in comparison with AODV that has no power control.

Abstract:Due to energy limitation,the wireless Ad hoc networks face to the challenge of lifetime,wireless resource utilized efficiency and delay.Now,the power control in the wireless Ad hoc networks has been the focus of extensive research,its main objectives are to reduce the total energy consumed in packet delivery,reduce the interference to other users in the network.For energy reserving,a method of Random Power Control(RPC) is proposed,the RPC lets the transmission power of nodes randomly distribute in an interval.By theoretic analyzing and numerical computing in the successful transmission probability and average transmitting power of RPC and fixed power control,it indicates that when choosing the proper minimum transmission power in the RPC,the successful transmission probability is almost the same as the fixed power control,the energy consumed is lower,and the lifetime of network is prolonged.

Abstract:This paper briefly discusses the function of power control technology in wireless sensor network, and analyzes how the power control technology affects the performance of network layer, Media Access Control (MAC) layer and Physical Layer (PHY). Based on these discussions, a cross-layer power control mechanism for energy efficiency is proposed, which is able to decrease the interference between signals of PHY, keep the connectivity of network and reduce the contention collision probability of MAC.

Abstract:In order to reduce energy consumption of nodes in the wireless ad hoc networks, a Power Control Algorithm based on Position of node (PCAP) is proposed. By analyzing the relationship between nodes, the Optimized Neighbor Set (ONS) of node is built. PCAP uses different power control policies for routing packets, control packets of MAC layer and other data packets. PCAP algorithm can reduce the energy consumption and guarantee the connectivity of network. The simulation results indicate that it can achieve well network performance, such as the throughput of MAC layer, dropped packets and end to end delay.

Abstract:Appling power control into routing protocols in wireless Ad hoc networks has become a hot research issue,because rational use of power control in routing protocols can not only reduce network energy consumption but also improve network throughput,packet delivery ratio and other performance of Ad hoc networks.This paper proposed an on-demand routing algorithm based on cross-layer power control termed as CPC-AODV.The proposed scheme adaptively built different routing entries according to the node power levels,and each forwarding node selected the minimum power level routing for data delivery.In addition,the scheme used different power control policies for transmission data packets,routing packets and MAC layer control frame.Simulation results show that the scheme achieves a good performance in terms of energy conservation,maximizing network lifetime,successful packet delivery ratio and reducing average end-to-end delay.

Abstract:Power control gives us many advantages including power saving, lower interference, and efficient channel utilization. We proposed two clustering algorithms with power control for multi-cluster mobile ad hoe networks in this paper. They improve the network throughput and the network stability as compared to other ad hoc networks in which all mobile nodes use the same transmission power. Furthermore, they help in reducing the system power consumption. We compared the performances of the two approaches. Simulation results show that the DCAP (Distributed clustering algorithm with power control) would achieve a better throughput performance and lower power consumption than the CCAP (Centralized clustering algorithm with power control), but it is complicated and liable to be affected by node velocity.

Abstract:Due to energy limitation,the wireless Ad hoc networks faces to the challenge of lifetime,wireless resource utilized efficiency and delay.This paper proposed a region-cost based power-aware routing protocol for reducing energy consumption and extending the survival period of networks.In route selecting,this protocol synthetically considers the factors of reserving energy of node and its neighbor,transmitting power,and receiving process power etc.So this protocol lets the energy consumption of nodes tend to keep at same level,and prolongs the lifetime of networks.This protocol has lower complexity to carry out at nodes,and the simulation results show it can achieve well performance.

Abstract:Power control is a critical issue to implement Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). This paper presents a novel power control protocol, namely the Optimistic Power Control MAC (OPCM) protocol for its possible application in MANETs. The OPCM protocol works by increasing power level in the retransmission stage to guarantee the DATA reception, rather than controlling the power in the initial transmission stage. It will be shown through comprehensive computer simulations that the proposed OPCM protocol is energy efficient, while still being able to maintain a high throughput for MANETs.

Abstract:This paper studies the power control mechanism of MAC layer and network layer of ad hoc network and proposes a cross-layer power control model which absorbs ant colony optimization in it. After getting the minimum sending power between each two nodes, the virtual central node can find network topology by Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) in network layer, then each pair of communication nodes adaptively adjust the current optimal sending power according to the exchange of information between nodes in link layer to realize the cross-layer power control. The simulation results show that in ad hoc network, the power control mechanism can quickly find the optimal path and effective reduce the energy and power consumption of nodes.

Abstract:In centralized wireless networks, reducing the transmission power normally leads to higher network transport throughput. In this paper, we investigate power control in a different scenario, where the network adopts distributed MAC layer coordination mechanisms. We first consider widely adopted RTS/CTS based MAC protocols. We show that an optimal power control protocol should use higher transmission power than the "just enough" power in order to improve spatial utilization. The optimal protocol has a minimal transmission floor area of Theta(d ij d max ), where d max is the maximal transmission range and d ij is the link length. This surprisingly implies that if a long link is broken into several short links, then the sum of the transmission floors reserved by the short links is still comparable to that reserved by the long link. Thus, using short links does not necessarily lead to higher throughput. Another consequence of this is that, with the optimal RTS/CTS based MAC, rate control can at best provide a factor of 2 improvement in transport throughput. We then extend our results to other distributed MAC protocols which uses physical carrier sensing or busy-tone as the control signal. Our simulation results show that the optimal power controlled scheme outperforms other popular MAC layer power control protocols.

Abstract:This article carried out a survey of the power control technique for energy-saving and the multi-rate feature in MANETs, with particular emphasis on typical Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols with combined techniques of power-control and multi-rate capabilities. Their characteristics, performance and deficiency were compared adequately in terms of optimization goal selection, process method and information exchange. The difficulties in designing MAC protocols taking account of both power-control and multi-rate capabilities including the status of wireless nodes is hard to be fully explored by other nodes and the control metrics cannot accurately achieve the optimization goal. Finally, future trends were predicted.

Abstract:Battery energy limitation has become a performance bottleneck for mobile ad hoc networks. IEEE 802.11 has been adopted as the current standard MAC protocol for ad hoc networks. However, it was developed without considering energy efficiency. To solve this problem, many modifications on IEEE 802.11 to incorporate power control have been proposed in the literature. The main idea of these power control schemes is to use a maximum possible power level for transmitting RTS/CTS and the lowest acceptable power for sending DATA/ACK. However, these schemes may degrade network throughput and reduce the overall energy efficiency of the network. This paper proposes autonomous power control MAC protocol (APCMP), which allows mobile nodes dynamically adjusting power level for transmitting DATA/ACK according to the distances between the transmitter and its neighbors. In addition, the power level for transmitting RTS/CTS is also adjustable according to the power level for DATA/ACK packets. In this paper, the performance of APCMP protocol is evaluated by simulation and is compared with that of other protocols.

Abstract:Existing multi-channel transmission power control MAC protocols for mobile Ad hoc networks(MANETs),e.g.DCA-PC,suffer from low utilization of control channels and interference of communications using large power with those using lower ones.To solve this problem,DDCA-PC,an enhanced protocol,was proposed,which allows control frames to be transmitted at a low power level and constrains some communications to specific channels.Simulation results indicate that compared to the DCA-PC protocol,DDCA-PC achieves a significant increase in the network throughput,and decreases energy consumption.

Abstract:Energy saving and high delivery reliability are two essential metrics in wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper, we propose a joint power control and network coding (PCNC) scheme which regulates the transmission power to reduce the overall energy usage and uses network coding to improve reliability by reducing the number of packet retransmissions. To argue for PCNC scheme, we investigate both unicast and multicast routing scenarios. To evaluate routing optimality, we adopt expected utility as a metric, which integrates energy cost, reliability, and benefit value. Based on the expected utility, we explore the optimality in both unicast and multicast routing. For unicast routing, we propose an optimal algorithm. We show the NP-hardness of multicast routing problem, and also design a heuristic solution. Results from simulations demonstrate that PCNC improves the performance in terms of expected utility compared with existing techniques.

Abstract:In wireless ad hoc networks, as an important technology, power control is widely used to increase energy efficiency and improve network throughput. Power control is composed of two components: one component handles the problems caused by asymmetric channel; the other component is responsible for selecting transmission power. In this paper, we focus on transmission power selection for ad hoc networks using 802.11 DCF MAC protocol. In this paper, we model the network with power control in joint with PHY layer and MAC layer. Then we prove that in considering the noise, interference from other nodes and packet length, it is NP-hard to obtain the optimal transmission power for every node even if it knows the complete knowledge of the network. After that, we propose two heuristic transmission power selection algorithms, one for energy-oriented power control and the other for throughput-oriented power control, which are time efficiency and able to improve the network performance largely. Finally, we evaluate our algorithms under different topologies and in different packet size. The results show that our algorithms can improve the network performance largely when compared with 802.11 and traditional power control algorithms.
