Abstract:The industry is the important foundation and main power of a country's economic development.Industrial competitiveness depends on the resources endowment of the country,to a large extent, especially on the labor resources. The comparative advantage of labor resources are decided by the population structure of the country. This paper uses data on 31 provinces(cities) and areas between 2000 and 2011 of mainland China to investigate the impact of demographic changes on industrial competitiveness, including the change of age structure, urban and rural structure and education structure. After eliminating the influence of RD expending and health care costs, two conclusions are obtained:(1) there is a significant negative correlation between aging of population and industrial competitiveness, the increase of population in cities didn't alleviate the negative effect of aging of population in China;(2) as a result of the education structure optimizing, the increase of human capital accumulation offsets the negative influence of population aging,to some extent. The findings imply profound policy implications:equal education opportunity should be valued when accelerating the construction of the new type of urbanization, which is helpful to improve the quality of newly entering workforce in cities. It should be the point of the industrial competitive strategy in the new period that reforming human resource bonuses to talent bonuses.
