Abstract:New progress in the supervisory control theory of discrete event systems is the system control using inhibitor arc of Petri nets. Based on a brief introduction of inhibitor arc Petri nets, the fundamental principle of the theory is provided. Four methods of the theory are summarized and their virtues and shortcomings are analyzed. These methods include string avoidance method combined with automata proposed by Sreenvias and Krogh, inhibitor arc method proposed by Uzam and Jones et al, state avoidance controller method based on inhibitor arc proposed by Cho and Kwon and weighted inhibitor arc method proposed by Wu and Su et al. Directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:The non-blocking property of discrete event systems can formulate many practical and important properties of manufacturing systems, such as deadlock freeness, liveness and reversibility. But it is difficult to guarantee non-blocking control. This paper presents a hybrid approach to decentralized control of discrete event systems. More generalized constraints are considered in this approach, which gives a graphical way of designing coordinators to keep the non-blocking property of the closed-loop system with decentralized supervisors. This approach also guarantees that the closed-loop system is maximally permissive.
Petri Nets Model of Emergency Control System for Shipping

Abstract:An emergency control system for shipping is an indispensable part of the modern maritime operation system. Petri nets are useful for describing and studying information processing systems that are characterized as being concurrent, distributed parallel and asynchronous. In this paper, a generalized stochastic Petri net with finite capacity and inhibitor arc is exploited to model the emergency control system for shipping. The obtained model is analyzed using the software of PIPE. The analyzed results on modeling time and resource performance show that the obtained model is able to describe well the real physics system and provide some suggestion on improving the performance of the emergency control system for shipping.

Abstract:This study proposes a fault diagnosis method of discrete event systems on the basis of a Petri net model with partially observable transitions. Assume that the structure of the Petri net model and the initial marking are known, and the faults can be modeled by its unobservable transitions. One of the contributions of this work is the use of the structure information of Petri net to construct an online fault diagnoser which can describe the system behavior of normal or potential faults. By modeling the flow of tokens in particular places that contain fault information, the variation of tokens in these places may be calculated. The outputs and inputs of these places are determined to be enabled or not through analyzing some special structures. With the structure information, traversing all the states is not required. Furthermore, the computational complexity of the polynomial allows the model to meet real-time requirements. Another contribution of this work is to simplify the subnet model ahead of conducting the diagnostic process with the use of reduction rules. By removing some nodes that do not contain the necessary diagnostic information, the memory cost can be reduced.
Petri Net Cascade Decomposition for Supervisory Control

Abstract:In this paper, an effort has been made to find out whether or not a linear integer program can be applied to supervisory control for discrete event systems modeled by controlled Petri nets with some uncontrollable subloops. We find out that when the uncontrollable subnet has a cascade structure and each cascade subnet is a loop-free subnet or a state machine (maybe include some subloops), the online computation of control policies can be carried out by an linear integer program. For the sake of decomposing cascade structures of a Petri net, the paper also addresses the issue of the technique for Petri net cascade decomposition.

Abstract:The basic idea behind FCP (finite capacity places) method has been introduced in Part 1. In this sequel, the synthesis algorithm of Petri net controller for DES to enforce the general case of the constraint is presented and the maximal permissiveness of FCP method is proved. In addition, the reported example of AGV (automated guided vehicles) coordination system is used to illustrate the advantages and characteristics of FCP method.

Abstract:The issue of supervisory control of discrete event systems (DES) based on Petri nets (PN) has been investigated by using various methods. However, there exists a problem that the supervisor, introduced to enforce the given specification, causes a deadlock in the closed-loop system, especially when the deadlock occurs in the closed-loop system in which the original plant model is live. To address this problem, we propose a hybrid approach to design a deadlock-free PN controller for DES with given specification. The approach mainly consists of two stages. Firstly, a supervisor is designed to enforce the given specification using the reported place invariants method. Then, we regard the obtained closed-loop system with deadlock introduced by the supervisor as a new plant net and adopt the theory of regions to design a deadlock-free PN controller. The controller designed by our approach is guaranteed to be maximally permissive when the original plant PN is fully controllable and observable. Even for partially controllable and observable plant PN, it is possible to obtain a suboptimal solution.

Abstract:Petri net is a graphical and mathematical modeling tool applicable to many systems. In order to improve the modeling power of Petri nets, we introduced the concept of running step. A new Petri net called as Step Hybrid Petri Net(SHPN) was proposed based on continuous Petri nets. The characteristics and operation rules of the SHPN were analysed. A digital PID controller and an analog PID controller were modeled using the SHPN.

Abstract:A method to exploit hybrid Petri nets (HPN) for quantitatively modeling and simulating gene regulated metabolic networks is demonstrated. A global kinetic modeling strategy and Petri net modeling algorithm are applied to perform the bioprocess functioning and model analysis. With the model, the interrelations between pathway analysis and metabolic control mechanism are outlined. Diagrammatical results of the dynamics of metabolites are simulated and observed by implementing a HPN tool, Visual Object Net ++. An explanation of the observed behavior of the urea cycle is proposed to indicate possibilities for metabolic engineering and medical care. Finally, the perspective of Petri nets on modeling and simulation of metabolic networks is discussed.

Abstract:Petri nets have been widely applied in the modeling and simulation of Discrete Event Dynamic System(DEDS),and it is of great value on how to apply petri net theory to the discrete manufacturing system.This paper proposes a new petri net model of robot,and transform it into a ladder diagram for PLC,which is widely used in industry control system.With this approach,not only put petri net into practice,but also make quantitative analysis of the deadlock,cycle time and invariant,which will provide great convenience in management,troubleshooting and shop floor control of manufacturing system.

The basic conception and some characters associated with hybrid Petri nets are strictly defined and described in mathematical language . A production system is modeled using the HPN model as an example which is described and analyzed with the Petri nets. Abstract:The structure of Petri nets (PN) is too static to make the corresponding response to the system that the structure changes because of itself and the environment. When PN are running or the environment transforms, the change of the structure of Petri nets is considered, such as: place P, transition T, and flow relation F. Based on original PN, this paper develops one kind of Petri Nets with Systematized Changeable Structure (PN-SCS) that according to the certain mechanism (or actual need), the structure of Petri Nets (place, transition, flow relation and so on) may change for the running of PN (internal factor or home affair occurrence) and the change of the environment (exterior factor or some demands), and these changes are describing the variation of the element of actual system. This model will broaden the application of PN and the connection with other science, such as Nature Inspired Computation, Complex Networks and Automatic Control Theory. Finally, the modeled method of PN-SCS is introduced by an example that people browses web pages.

Abstract:In this paper, a hybrid Petri net-based hierarchical control and modeling framework for real-time process procedural control is introduced. The new modeling tool, called as hybrid predicate Petri net, is an extension of hybrid Petri net and Predicate/Transition net, in which the firing speeds of its continuous transitions are changeable and controlled by upper level and continuous mathematical model. Predicates are introduced to discrete transitions to represent the various constraints possibly existing in process systems. Definition of net structure and running rules of the hybrid predicate Petri net are provided. On the basis of supervisory model, the issues of safety verification, optimization of control parameters and scheduling of operating sequences are discussed. At last, a distillation column is used as an example for modeling and analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we research on a kind of high-level net system and give the basic mathematics theory of Colored Petri net system and Pr/T system. We model and analyze two processes by using the theory of Colored Petri net and Pr/T. Papermaking system is a complicated passes hot and character process, has many peculiarity such as many disturb, strong coupling, great pure lag etc. The papermaking model can be ease built by utilizing the theory. So the theory of Colored Petri is advantage for model of complex industry system. Finally, we represent a new analyse method for papermaking process.

Abstract:An accurate and reliable Railway Driving Safety System has to be adaptable and flexible for changing requirements coming from various safety-protecting devices. Petri Net with Object (PNO) is introduced to model this system in order to overcome the disadvantages using traditional modeling techniques. The structure of the PNO possesses the characteristics of small scale and flexibility, modularization and operability, so that system model can be partitioned and modeled in separate dynamic active objects according to process approach. Workflow among these objects can be dynamically adaptive allowing for the subsystem change. Some examples suggest the advantages of this contribution.

Abstract:This study is concerned with the imperfect virtual-reality mapping relationship in cyber–physical systems (CPSs) and the challenge faced in knowledge-based decisions. Regarding those problems, a double-layer mapping Petri net (DMPN) model is proposed. By deploying the programmable automation gateway PAG200, combining the CPS technology with the principle of Petri net and establishing the monitoring Petri net in the cyber space, this model realizes mapping between the physical entity and the digital object. Meanwhile, the knowledge-based decision problem in CPS is defined as a Petri net conflict. In accordance with this, a control network for resolving the conflict is established. Finally, through a practical case, the workflow of DMPN is illustrated and a task allocation algorithm and a quality decision algorithm are proposed to resolve Petri net conflicts. Consequently, it is proven that DMPN is feasible in solving actual production process flow control. At the same time, it also provides a solution for enterprise workflow analysis.

Abstract:For a complex electromechanical product that is a cyber–physical system (CPS), its dynamic behaviors are embodied in the closed-loop control between the logic process in its cyber component and actual actuators/sensors in its physical component, and thus, a well-defined model of the control is important to create a digital twin that acts as much like the real machine as possible. This article proposes a Petri nets (PNs)-based modeling solution that employs hybrid PNs (HPNs) for physics and system of sequential systems with shared resources (S4R) nets for logic in building a hierarchical control model. We also present PNs technologies for implementing a smooth transition and bidirectional mapping from the virtual prototype to the real machine. These technologies involve a PNs integration of a reinforcement learning (RL) method for generating a workflow scheduling agent in design, an extension of PNs definitions that is compatible with the microcontroller for easy deployment in manufacturing, and an architecture of PNs execution recording for data-driven monitoring in service. A software kit is provided for the solution that includes an integrated development environment of PNs, tools for quickly building a virtual prototype, and a monitor server for remote data-driven monitoring. This solution is successfully applied in the development of a typical cyber–physical product case, namely, the chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) analyzer.

Abstract:The problem of constructing a Petri net feedback controller, which enforces linear inequality constraints involving the marking vector and the Parikh vector on a discrete event system (DES) modeled by Petri nets (PN), is discussed in this paper. A novel method for design of controller enforcing the constraints is presented. First the constraints involving the marking and Parikh vectors are transformed into the constraints involving Parikh vector only using Petri net state equality, and then the controller is constructed based on the viewpoint that a place can be seen as a linear inequality constraint on the Parikh vector. The method is proved to be simpler and more efficient than that presented by Iordache and Moody through an applied instance that was also used by Moody et al., and holds remarkable advantage especially for large systems.

Abstract:The reliability, safety and maintainability can be demonstrated and man-machine interface is greatly improved due to the use of digital technology in the realization of the power control system. The paper describes an ongoing research and development project of a power control system for the research reactor based on full digital technology. The contents are concerned in mechanism of power control, realized functions, structure of the system, algorithm for power regulating, and some key techniques taken in the design. Owing to the fact that the same type of digital controllers as the other parts of control system is used in the design, the power control system can be easily integrated into overall reactor control network.
