Abstract:Research integrity is now one of the most important issues in the governance of science and technology (S&T) ethics in China. Many research results have been produced in the academic circle on this topic. A series of regulations and normative documents has been issued by government authorities, and numerous measures have been taken by universities and scientific research institutions. Despite this notable progress, the problems of research integrity have not been eradicated. Incidents such as rejections of papers by journals due to plagiarism and falsification of research results happen from time to time. Also, the awareness of research integrity among some S&T personnel and students has yet to be strengthened. The new challenge for research integrity in the new era is that of being able to locate the deep-seated causes of research-integrity problems and find effective ways to solve them. Exploring the causes of and countermeasures against those problems from the perspective of the culture of science is a research field that deserves greater attention.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate graduate nursing students' attitude towards research integrity and research misconduct. Methods: Totally 220 graduate nursing students were recruited conveniently and surveyed with a self-designed questionnaire. Results: Most of the graduate students (91.8%) thought research integrity were important or very important. The total score of attention level on research integrity was (13.30±3.61). The attention levels of the first year graduate students and the students who had never published papers in key journals or never received research integrity training were low (P<0.05). The graduate students thought that research misconduct mainly affected the prestige of the researcher's academic ifeld (4.45±0.79), public's faith on researchers (4.45±0.78) and the researcher's academic reputation (4.44±0.74). They considered the lack of the academic supervision (77.7%), influence of social environment (77.3%), insufficient research ability (74.1%), defect of academic morality (62.3%) and the quantitative evaluation of research (61.4%) as the main causes of research misconduct. Conclusion: Graduate nursing students have realized the importance of research integrity. However, further education is needed to improve graduate students' attention level on research integrity and recognition of research misconduct. Creating research integrity atmosphere, improving academic supervision and evaluation mechanism, and strengthening comprehensive quality of graduate students are necessary for improving the research integrity of graduate students.

Abstract:Currently, there are more and more academic corruptions in the university, i.e., plagiarism, academic trade, academic domination phenomenon, sale of academic resources, academic degree fraud, academic foam and low-level repeat etc. The main reasons for academic corruption are indifferent academic moral consciousness for researchers,incomplete laws to punish academic corruption, the lack of monitoring mechanisms, and unscientific assessment mechanism in colleges and universities. Therefore, this paper proposes many anti-corruption methods of strengthening academic moral, improving relevant laws, establishing reasonable mechanism for monitoring and punishing,and reforming university academic evaluation mechanism.

Abstract:Research institutions are responsible for promoting research integrity and handling allegations of research misconduct. Due to various cultural and social contexts, institutional policies from different cultural backgrounds exhibit many differences, such as their primary concern and mechanisms for dealing with allegations of research misconduct. This comparative study analyses research misconduct policies from 21 Chinese and 22 European universities. The results show that definitions of research misconduct from all retrieved policies go beyond fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism but include different types of questionable research practices. Their procedures for handling research misconduct differ in, for example, confidentiality and disclosure of conflict of interest. Differences can also be found in their governance approaches (“bottom-up” versus “top-down”).

Perceptions of research integrity and the Chinese situation: In-depth interviews with Chinese biomedical researchers in Europe

Abstract:Research misconduct has been a threat to Chinese biomedical research. Despite many publications dealing with research integrity in China, little empirical data is available concerning Chinese biomedical researchers' perceptions of research integrity and misconduct. To learn more about this issue, we interviewed Chinese biomedical researchers in Europe to investigate their perceptions of this issue. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 participants until data saturation was reached. The findings indicate that certain aspects of research integrity need elaboration among Chinese biomedical researchers. Participants had a vague understanding of general concepts related to research integrity. Data fabrication, data falsification and plagiarism were perceived as the most severe deviance. Inappropriate authorship (especially gift authorship) and ghost writing were regarded as the most prevalent types of research misconduct in Chinese biomedical research. The harms of certain practices, such as inappropriate authorship, salami publication and multiple submission, were not well recognized. Attitudes toward research misconduct were divided. The current scientific evaluation system, pressures of promotion, motives for fame and other factors were perceived as the main reasons for research misconduct. Participants suggested various measures in addition to existing safeguards to improve research integrity in Chinese biomedical research.
Exploring the organisational context of research misconduct in higher learning institutions in Malaysia

Abstract:Due to the financial pressure caused by cutbacks in funding and the race to achieve higher university rankings, researchers are competing for limited funds. These funds enable researchers to contribute to the scientific enterprise and to secure better positions. Given this pressure, there is a need to understand how academic organisations can influence academic integrity. This study uses a qualitative methodology and incudes in-depth interviews with 22 voluntary participants from various Malaysian public and private universities and with different research backgrounds and experience. The findings suggest that mentorship, the pressure to perform, the research environment and research policies related to misconduct can contribute to research misconduct. According to the participants, reward systems that are heavily dependent on publication records can result in a research environment that is not conducive to research ethics, and which creates self-centred individualistic researchers rather than team players. This can lead to bad mentorship where researchers are more concerned with their own performance and do not prioritise their teaching and supervising of junior researchers. The endorsement of well-written research policies may have little significant value for research misconduct without enforcement and awareness of the importance of research integrity. This paper is an attempt to encourage university management to promote research integrity among individuals who are directly or indirectly involved in the research process by taking action against those involved in misconduct. It also suggests rewarding researchers based on their overall performance rather than solely on their publication record.

Abstract:Research integrity is manifested thru the use of honest and verifiable research methods with adherence to accepted professional codes. Recently, trustworthiness in research has been challenged by various forms of research misconduct, such as analytical flexibility, data dredging, HARKing (hypothesis after research knowledge), plagiarism, and selective and distorted reporting. Drivers of research misconduct have been identified as institutional--publication incentives to pursue a career, researcher--metric of success is publication volume, and the journal-- more likely to accept papers with positive. The open-access mode propelling the proliferation of predatory journals is causing a dilemma to sound research reporting. Measures were established to curtail research integrity challenges, such as study registration, open data, common reporting standards, a team of rivals, and blind analysis. This report will elaborate and provide insight into what influenced research misconduct, how it can be mitigated, and how to maintain a credible research environment.

Abstract:Research has focused on academic integrity in terms of students' conduct in relation to university rules and procedures, whereas fewer studies examine student integrity more broadly. Of particular interest is whether students in higher education today conceptualize integrity as comprising such broader attributes as personal and social responsibility. We collected and analyzed qualitative responses from 127 students at the National University of Singapore to understand how they define integrity in their lives as students, and how they envisage integrity would be demonstrated in their lives after university. Consistent with the current literature, our data showed that integrity was predominantly taken as "not plagiarizing (in school)/giving appropriate credit when credit is due (in the workplace)", "not cheating", and "completing tasks independently". The survey, though, also revealed further perceptions such as, in a university context, "not manipulating data (e.g., scientific integrity)", "being honest with others", "group work commitments", "conscience/moral ethics/holding true to one's beliefs", "being honest with oneself", "upholding a strong work ethic", "going against conventions", and "reporting others", as well as, in a workplace context, "power and responsibility and its implications", "professionalism", and "representing or being loyal to an organization". The findings suggest that some students see the notion of integrity extending beyond good academic conduct. It is worthwhile to (re)think more broadly what (else) integrity means, discover the gaps in our students' understanding of integrity, and consider how best we can teach integrity to prepare students for future challenges to integrity and ethical dilemmas.

Abstract:Research Integrity (RI) is high on the agenda of both institutions and science policy. The European Union as well as national ministries of science have launched ambitious initiatives to combat misconduct and breaches of research integrity. Often, such initiatives entail attempts to regulate scientific behavior through guidelines that institutions and academic communities can use to more easily identify and deal with cases of misconduct. Rather than framing misconduct as a result of an information deficit, we instead conceptualize Questionable Research Practices (QRPs) as attempts by researchers to reconcile epistemic and social forms of uncertainty in knowledge production. Drawing on previous literature, we define epistemic uncertainty as the inherent intellectual unpredictability of scientific inquiry, while social uncertainty arises from the human-made conditions for scientific work. Our core argument-developed on the basis of 30 focus group interviews with researchers across different fields and European countries-is that breaches of research integrity can be understood as attempts to loosen overly tight coupling between the two forms of uncertainty. Our analytical approach is not meant to relativize or excuse misconduct, but rather to offer a more fine-grained perspective on what exactly it is that researchers want to accomplish by engaging in it. Based on the analysis, we conclude by proposing some concrete ways in which institutions and academic communities could try to reconcile epistemic and social uncertainties on a more collective level, thereby reducing incentives for researchers to engage in misconduct.

Abstract:There are numerous issues in Chinese academic research environment at present, such as the lack of basic laws to govern academic misconduct and the scholars' utilitarian approaches to conducting research. These issues will not only seriously waste national resources, but also may cause the country's comprehensive national power and international competitiveness decreased and impede the development of society. This essay illustrates the academic misconduct in China and claims that higher education should take responsibility for this. Specifically, it analyses several academic misconduct cases and highlights some challenges in the transformative process.

Abstract:Scientific integrity is the most important aspect that higher education institutions have to take care of, as it conveys credibility and acceptance of science to the public. Although science has a very powerful built-in self-regulation process for detecting and correcting scientific misconduct, there is a need for clear guidelines that have to be adapted on regular intervals to the rapidly changing world caused by scientific developments themselves. Outlined here are recent advances in how Switzerland increases awareness and transparency of scientific misconduct and how it handles cases of misconduct to improve the quality of science.

Abstract:Through summarizing two cases of academic misconduct in scholarly publishing,we analyzed the new forms and root causes of such misconduct in the background of the media fusion. We think that the academic misconduct could appear in any part of the academic publishing; therefore,we must pay enough attention to it. Consciously moral requirements to scientific research and institutionalized management of publishing process are still main measures to keep the academic purity and prevent misconduct,and should not be ignored.

Abstract:The article outlines the concept of academic integrity as a component of academic culture and states the academic integrity of researchers is a key aspect in determining the quality and reliability of scientific research, as well as the reputation of the scientific community. Adherence to the principles of academic integrity is the foundation for the development of scientific knowledge and innovation. It was noted that Ukrainian legislation provides a clear framework for the regulation of academic integrity, establishing fundamental principles, requirements, and sanctions for violations. This contributes to the assurance of the quality of education and research, as well as the enhancement of trust in the outcomes of educational and research activities. A critical assessment of the list of violations of academic integrity is given. Particularly emphasized the shortcomings of the legal regulation of the definition and application of the institute “academic responsibility” as a form of ensuring “academic integrity”. The authors analyze and summarize the basic ethical principles that form the basis of academic integrity. Conclusions. Thus, academic integrity violations, such as plagiarism, can result in serious consequences, including the revocation of academic degrees and academic titles. At the same time, maintaining academic integrity is a researcher’s moral and professional obligation, as it affects public trust in scientific results. Maintaining academic integrity is essential for the development of a scientific environment that is conducive to intellectual honesty and transparency in scientific research. Furthermore, the culture of academic integrity encourages high standards of ethics and professional behavior among scientists. Consequently, the quality and credibility of research results are contingent upon the research process being conducted in an honest and ethical manner, free from practices that are deemed unacceptable within the scientific community and that compromise academic integrity. In this regard, all the efforts of the scientific community should be aimed at preventing academic dishonesty, hindering and stopping it by creating a responsible and honest scientific environment.

Abstract:Introduction: Research integrity is the foundation of credible research and a pre-requisite for a successful academic research environment. Lately, a lot of revelations of fraud and other unacceptable behaviour in research have been highly publicized in scientific journals and mass media. Whereas institutions in developed countries have developed guidelines and regulations to ensure responsible conduct of research and appropriately deal with cases of research misconduct, low- and middle-income countries seem to be lagging behind. In Uganda, there seems to be lack of coordinated efforts to address the problem of research misconduct both at the national and institutional level. Objective: To propose a framework for fostering scientific integrity and deterring misconduct in research in Ugandan research and academic institutions. Methods: A review of literature on scientific integrity, scientific misconduct, responsible conduct of research, and international ethical guidelines was done. Results: Basing on the 2012 Inter-Academy Council policy report, initiatives to promote responsible conduct of research in Ugandan research and academic institutions are proposed. Conclusion: With the proposed framework, an honest and trustworthy research enterprise in Uganda based on principles of scientific integrity is envisioned.
