Abstract:According to the actual needs of underwater acoustic homing system in system debugging and setting up experiment parameters, a new design of real water double targets simulator is introduced. The system simulates the acoustic reflection characteristics of the target, receives active detection signal and emits signals of reflection echo characteristics. The target simulator can response up to two active detection signals in the condition of interference. This system is complete, accurate and can be extended. The user can monitor the working state of simulator and change the parameters of simulator. As a result of an echoic tank experiment and lake experiment, the system has been successfully applied to the underwater homing system.

Abstract:For the current field of underwater acoustic stealth, the passive methods such as acoustic absorption materials are extensively used. However, the performance of such passive stealth method is seriously degraded at low frequencies. Therefore, active stealth methods, which control underwater sound field by actively transmitting sound signals using secondary sources, have attracted increasing attention. The paper focuses on the control of target scattering field and a method for underwater sound field control is presented. Simulation is performed using finite-element method and proves that the proposed method is effective to directionally control the scattering field of a steel shell. Finally, an experiment was conducted in an anechoic tank. The experimental results show that the proposed method can greatly weaken the specified directions of the scattering field of the steel shell.
Simulation and Experimental Demonstration of Sound Field Control Using Beam Deflection

Abstract:The acoustic absorption materials are mostly used for underwater stealth. However, the effect of such materials decreases in low-frequency band. Therefore, a method of sound field control using beam deflection was proposed, which is a kind of active noise control technology. The principle of the algorithm is firstly used in underwater stealth. This paper focused on the simulation based on the finite-element method and an experiment to verify the conventional beam deflection algorithm. The simulation based on the finite-element method are performed and the results show that the conventional beam deflection can effectively realize sound field directional weakening. Finally, an experiment is carried out in a muffler pool. The experiment data show that the energy at the predetermined control direction is reduced by more than 14dB. The experiment data of different frequencies, different distances and different control angles verified that the conventional beam deflection achieved stable sound field directional weakening effect.

Abstract:Spiral coaxial coils are widely used in wireless charging systems for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). However, these coils can generate axial electromagnetic interference that may adversely affect the electronic components contained within the AUV. In order to overcome this issue, this paper introduced a pair of radially coupled coils which implement distributed ferrite cores. The mathematical model of the curly coils was derived, and its geometry parameters were optimized through the use of genetic algorithms. ANSYS Maxwell was used to analyze and optimize the layout of the ferrite cores. A prototype of the AUV wireless charging system was presented, demonstrating a maximum efficiency of 94% at 2.2 kW in salt water. The rotation adaptivity of the system was also tested, revealing stable output performance within the possible roll-angle variations of the AUV.

Abstract:Vector hydrophone consists of conventional pressure sensor and particle velocity sensor, which co-locately and instantaneously measures pressure and orthogonal components of particle velocity. We use vector hydrophone for measuring noise radiated by the underwater target in low frequency band and give basic principle of the measurement. It is shown that (1) in isotropic noise field, maximum spatial gain of particle velocity is about 4.8 dB, active acoustical intensity is relative to time-bandwidth product; (2) in anisotropic noise field, gain of active acoustical intensity is determined by anisotropy of spatial distribution of noise field. Results of computer simulations and the sea trial are also given in the paper.

Abstract:Underwater acoustic backscatter communication, which allows an underwater sensor node (USN) to communicate with the surface sink node (SN) by reflecting the acoustic signal from the SN, is a promising solution for enabling the Internet of Underwater Things.However, underwater backscattering is vulnerable to jamming attacks, especially from a gliding autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that can inject jamming signal to the underwater acoustic channel accordingly.This paper considers the attack-defense interactions between the AUV jammer and the SN defender in their transmit power allocations of jamming signals and acoustic signals over multiple USNs.We formulate the strategic power allocation problem for the SN and AUV as an asymmetric anti-jamming Colonel Blotto (CB) game model with a finite budget of total transmit powers.In particular, the competitive interactions between the SN and the AUV is modeled as the competition of two players in the game for limited resource budgets over the battlefield set.We analyze the mixedstrategy Nash equilibrium to the game, and obtain the closedform performance bound of the defense power allocation strategy.Numerical results show the superiority of the proposed CB game based multi-USN secure transmission scheme as compared to the benchmarks in terms of the expected sum-utility.

Abstract:This paper proposes a directional transducer-enabled neighbor discovery algorithm in integrated sensing and communication for underwater acoustic networks (ISAC-UANs). The neighbor discovery algorithm is a bidirectional scanning-based (SBA) and detection-assisted neighbor discovery (SBA-D) algorithm, which is divided into three steps. Firstly, in ISACUANs, prior knowledge about the distance away from neighbor nodes is obtained via the detection ability. Secondly, the neighbor discovery of detected nodes stage is proposed leveraging the prior knowledge to adjust the transmission power, which reduces the packet collision probability of discovering the detected neighbor nodes. Thirdly, the neighbor discovery of remaining nodes stage is proposed to discover the remaining neighbor nodes following the SBA algorithm. Furthermore, we analyze and derive the performance of the proposed SBA-D algorithm. Numerical simulation results show that the performance of the proposed SBA-D algorithm for ISAC-UANs is better than that of the SBA algorithm in underwater acoustic communication networks (UACNs).

Abstract:This paper introduces the realization of a wideband MIMO underwater acoustic (UWA) communication experimental system. The system aims at the inherent characteristics of shallow sea acoustic channel with reasonable hardware design. The DT9836 and the DT9816 are used as multifunction data acquisition (DAQ) modules for transmitter and receiver respectively. The USB is used as the communication interface between the underlying hardware equipment and the host computer with QuickDAQ software. The system is verified for its reliability and practicability through the experiments in an anechoic tank and Zhoushan shallow sea area.

Abstract:At present, the realities of acoustic communications and undersea networks differ substantially from the expectations arising from academic theory and investigation. The issue is not that the fundamentals of communications theory do not apply, but rather the fact that the difficulties of the acoustic channel do not necessarily fit the assumptions underlying conventional applications of that theory. In this paper we describe many of the practical problems that have been addressed over the past ten years of modem development. Some of the issues addressed have an RF analog, but the severity of the channel and the combination of channel constraints and modem-platform operations makes acoustic communications a very different problem. In particular, we address these issues via their impact on physically small, battery powered, DSP-based, omni-directional modems. Next we describe progress toward using commercial acoustic modems as the basis for underwater networks. We discuss design choices at the physical, link, and network layers that are consistent with the compound constraints of the transmission channel and modem.

High-Performance Broadband Bistatic Piezoelectric Composite Array for Application in Ship Wake Detection

Abstract:In the far-field wake of a ship, the intensity of the scattering of bubbles is relatively weak. In addition, the wake is relatively thin, and the hole phenomenon is prominent. Thus, it is difficult to detect the wake at a long distance. On this basis, this paper studies a broadband 1–3 high-performance composite transceiver sub-array for the improved detection of a ship's far wake flow field. The content includes frequency characteristics, transmission performance, power tolerance, the beam width of the transmitting array, and the frequency characteristics, reception performance, and beam width of the receiving array. The frequency bandwidth of the transmission array developed in this paper can reach a value of 180 kHz (the center frequency is 390 kHz). The maximum sound source level can reach a value of 228 dB. In the same frequency band, the sensitivity of the receiving array can reach a value of 184 dB, and the fluctuation is less than 5 dB. Compared with the narrowband 1–3 composite array of the same size, the acoustic performance of this sub-array has obvious advantages. Finally, to improve the effective sound path (before the first interface reflection of the sound wave) of the emitted sound wave in the ship's far-field wake, combined with the speed of the moving carrier and the wide-band detection method of the ship's wake, the configuration method of the detection array for the width and direction of the ship's far-field wake is proposed. The results of this research have an important reference value for the research on broadband 1–3 high-performance composite arrays and their application in the far-field wake detection of ships.

Abstract:Driven by the increasing demand on marine exploration, UWANs are confronted with the rigorous challenge of improving network throughput. To deal with this challenge, this article proposes to apply the IBFD technique to UWANs. The IBFD technique can potentially double link capacity by simultaneously transmitting and receiving on the same frequency band, which has been recently demonstrated to be feasible for wireless communications. In this article, novel MAC protocols are specifically proposed for the acoustic IBFD network to overcome the inherent issues in underwater acoustic communications, such as long packet delay, large node collision probability, and high power consumption. Numerical results verify that our proposals can effectively mitigate these effects and improve the overall performance of the UWANs.

Abstract:With the development of underwater acoustic technique,the underwater warfare becomes more and more complicated.The appearance of active acoustic decoy which can simulate target echo provides very important help to the countermeasure of active acoustic torpedo and active sonar.This paper first analyzes the principle of the echo simulator working in acoustic decoy,and then a method for estimating a series of echo characteristic parameters,such as the signal pulse width,doppler frequency shift,time delay and signal broadening,target strength and maximal echo intensity,is given.And an echo signal simulation result of echo simulator which can counterwork acoustic torpedo and active sonar at the same time is given.It provides a valuable reference for studying the technology of underwater acoustic countermeasure.

Abstract:Determining the strategy how the naval ship uses acoustic jamming devices (such as decoys) to counter torpedo is one of the main problems in acoustic warfare. In this paper, mathematical models for the problem based on nonlinear optimization are presented and the MATLAB optimization toolbox is used to solve the models. The results of how the naval ship should escape and how to send decoys are obtained. This new method has advantages over the traditional Monte Carlo method, it needs little computation and does not heavily rely on the acoustic parameters and acoustic equations, so it has general applications.

Abstract:Underwater vehicle use sonar system to detect the enemy ship as well as its own position during its naviga-tion. The main sonar system which can be divided into active sonar and passive sonar is usually placed in the bow. However, noise is an important interference factor that both systems must overcome. In order to research flow-induced noise in the bow, the LES model was applied to simulate flow field out of the underwater vehicle to get fluctuating pressure. Then the fluctuating pressure was import into ACTRAN- a software based on Lighthill's acoustic analogy theory- to simulate the sound field in the bow. Speed, position of the array and shape of the array carrier were studied to reveal their influences on the propagation of flow-induced noise. The results show thatthe higher speed, the bigger of flow-induced noise. Furthermore, flow-induced noise can be diminished by increasing the distance between sonar array and dome and using relative smooth in-stallion surface.

Abstract:While acoustic-based underwater communication systems have been widely used for many decades, existing systems still suffer from the low reliability problem due to the severe multipath fading, especially in shallow water environments. It is well known that MIMO and beamforming techniques are among the most effective solutions to address fading challenges. However, not all underwater devices can carry the multiple-transducer system due to cost and size limitations, especially small AUVs and sensors. In this paper, we design and characterize the novel acoustic intelligent surfaces in the underwater environment, which enables the beamforming capability to address the multipath fading problem, without requiring the end-users to equip MIMO components. To the best of our knowledge, although electromagnetic (EM) intelligent surfaces have been intensively investigated for terrestrial communications recently, acoustic intelligent surface has not been explored since it has completely different physical mechanism and hardware structure than that of EM surfaces. Therefore, in this paper, we design a new reconfigurable piezoelectric reflector array that performs as an underwater intelligent surface. Rigorous analytical model is developed to characterize how the designed underwater intelligent surface controls the propagation of acoustic waves in the underwater multipath channel. Based on the new design and model, the underwater intelligent surface-enabled beamforming protocol is provided. Through a hybrid underwater communication simulator based on COMSOL Multiphysics and Bellhop toolbox, we demonstrate the proposed acoustic intelligent surface can effectively form and steer acoustic beams and significantly mitigate the multipath fading in shallow underwater environments.

Abstract:The UnderWater Acoustic (UWA) communication is the foundation for oceanic information applications. However, existing UWA systems suffer from low data rate problem. Although the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) scheme is proved to be able to increase channel capacity in many terrestrial scenarios, the high cost and complexity of acoustic MIMO significantly limit its usage. Recently, the acoustic reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (acoustic RIS) concept has been proposed to address the aforementioned problem. In this paper, with the real-world constraints taken into consideration, three key components of the acoustic RIS are designed to realize the underwater RIS concept, including the new acoustic RIS hardware, the ultra-wideband (UWB) beamforming, and practical operation protocol. Specifically, a completely new hardware design of acoustic RIS is first provided, since existing electromagnetic RIS designed for terrestrial environments do not work for underwater acoustic waves. Then, the UWB beamforming solution is developed, since underwater acoustic RIS need to control the acoustic signals, whose bandwidth is comparable to its carrier frequency. Finally, the practical operation protocol is developed to realize the acoustic RIS functionalities in complex underwater environment. The acoustic RIS design is validated through both COMSOL multiphysics simulations and end-to-end Bellhop-based simulations.

Abstract:Time-domain adaptive anti-jamming is the most conventional anti-jamming technology in the field of navigation countermeasures. Time-domain anti-jamming technology can suppress changeable narrow-band interference without prior information through adaptive algorithm. With the complexity of the interference environment and the expansion of interference methods, traditional time-domain anti-jamming has brought high anti-jamming performance, insufficient performance, and high complexity. The problem of insufficient ranging robustness, time-domain anti-jamming technology is constantly improving and developing while navigation countermeasures are being upgraded. The basic concepts and classic algorithms of time-domain anti-jamming are introduced, and the main problems faced by time-domain anti-jamming research in recent years are summarized. It also focuses on improving algorithm convergence, reducing hardware complexity, and improving ranging accuracy. The aspect gives an overview of technological development. Finally, based on the summary of the existing technology and the engineering problems faced, a prospect for the future development direction of anti-jamming technology in the time domain is made.
