Abstract:Fenghuang town,located in Chao′an county,Guandong province,is the famous production area of Fenghuang Dancong,and one of the inheritance and development region of GongFu tea of Shantou and Chaozhou.The investigation result shows this area has unique natural condition which is suitable for tea plant growth.The local tea farmers are plain and diligent,and they preserve the traditional craftsmanship of Fenghuang Dancong.With the tea market heating up for recent years,the influence of market economy reflects in local tea famers′ production gradually.

Abstract:Understanding the relationship between landscape characteristics and water quality is critically important for estimating pollution potential and reducing pollution risk. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between landscape characteristics and water quality at both spatial and temporal scales. The study took place in the Jinjing River watershed in 2010; seven landscape types and four water quality pollutions were chosen as analysis parameters. Three different buffer areas along the river were drawn to analyze the relationship as a function of spatial scale. The results of a Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis suggest that “source” landscape, namely, tea gardens, residential areas, and paddy lands, have positive effects on water quality parameters, while forests exhibit a negative influence on water quality parameters because they represent a “sink” landscape and the sub-watershed level is identified as a suitable scale. Using the principal component analysis, tea gardens, residential areas, paddy lands, and forests were identified as the main landscape index. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was employed to model the relationship between landscape characteristics and water quality for each season. The results demonstrate that both landscape composition and configuration affect water quality. In summer and winter, the landscape metrics explained approximately 80.7 % of the variance in the water quality variables, which was higher than that for spring and fall (60.3 %). This study can help environmental managers to understand the relationships between landscapes and water quality and provide landscape ecological approaches for water quality control and land use management.

Abstract:The increasing input of fertilizers in tea (Camellia sinensis L.) fields may contribute to the deterioration of surface water quality. A plot study was conducted over a 2-year period (2010–2011) to evaluate the effects of rainfall and fertilizer types on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations in surface runoff from tea fields. Studies were arranged on slope of 18 % of red clay at a subtropical tea fields in Tiaoxi watershed of Zhejiang province, southeast China. Organic (OF), slow-release (SRF), and conventional chemical fertilizers were applied to different plots at rates of 248 kg N ha−1 and 125.2 kg P ha−1 in 2010 and 300 kg N ha−1 and 100 kg P ha−1 in 2011. Rainfall amounts showed statistically significant correlations with concentrations of TN and TP in runoff water from all fertilized treatments. Although equivalent N and P were applied in each fertilized treatment, the OF treatment had the lowest annual arithmetic mean concentration of total N in runoff in 2010 (6.1 mg L−1) and was amongst the lowest in 2011 (9.2 mg L−1) with concentration statistically similar to SRF (9.0 mg L−1). The SRF treatment had the lowest annual arithmetic mean concentration of total P in runoff in 2010 (1.50 mg L−1), while few differences were observed in concentration of total P between fertilized treatments in 2011. The research results suggested that replacement of conventional chemical fertilizers with organic or slow-release fertilizers in tea fields could reduce N and P losses while maintaining tea yields.
Does dual reduction in chemical fertilizer and pesticides improve nutrient loss and tea yield and quality? A pilot study in a green tea garden in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, China

Abstract:Tea tree (Camellia sinensis) is a valuable and popular cash crop widely planted in tropical and subtropical areas of China. To increase tea yield and quality, high rates of chemical fertilizer and pesticide application have generally been used; however, increasing usage of fertilizers and pesticides does not always proportionally increase tea yield. Indeed, excessive nutrient inputs may cause serious agricultural non-point source pollution. A pilot study on dual reduction in fertilizers and pesticides was conducted in a green tea plantation in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, to explore the environmental effects of different fertilizer and pesticide managements (e.g., changes in soil properties and nutrient accumulation, nutrient inputs in runoff water) and to reveal the potential effects of the interaction of these two managements on tea yield and quality. Traditional formulas and rates of chemical fertilizers and pesticides were used as the baselines (100% usage); replacement with different proportions of organic fertilizer (i.e., 20%, 50% and 80%) and direct pesticide reductions of 30%, 50%, and 80% were tested. The results showed that proper management with organic fertilizer replacement can effectively mitigate soil acidification and nutrient deficiency in tea plantations, increase soil organic matter (OM) and ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) contents, and promote tea yield and quality. Moreover, managements with organic fertilizer replacement can markedly reduce the inputs of ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), total phosphorus (TP), and total potassium (TK) in runoff water. Soil nutrient accumulation was the highest while the runoff nutrient input was the lowest at 20% organic fertilizer replacement. Experimental spraying of bifenthrin and chlorfenapyr revealed that these pesticides were mainly trapped by the tea leaves and rarely entered the soil or water bodies. Although pesticide reduction treatments can effectively decrease pesticide residues in tea leaves, differences in pesticide residue between various treatments were not obvious due to the rapid degradation of pesticides. Multivariate analysis of variance showed that 50% of the variation in tea yield, bud density, polyphenols, and caffeine can be explained by interactions between fertilizers and pesticides. Combinations of 20% or 50% organic fertilizer replacement and 30% or 50% pesticide application reduction are appropriate for both mitigating nutrient loss and balancing tea yield and quality, especially the combination of 50% organic fertilizer replacement and 50% pesticide reduction, which produced the best results. This study demonstrates the feasibility of dual reductions in fertilizers and pesticides for mitigating environmental hazards while maintaining the yield and quality of tea.

Abstract:Tieguanyin is one of the best Oolong tea. The study on fertilization efficiency of Tieguanyinis favorable to improve it's productivity. A orthogonality treatment of 4 factors with 3 levels was tested to figure out the effects of different fertilizer formulas on yield and quality of Tieguanyin.The results showed that the best treatment is the N3P1K3RC2 or N2P1K2RC3. Treated with suitable organic and inorganic fertilizers, tea plant of Tieguanyin grew rapidly, and gave high yield and quality, and the soil fertility also was improved. The effect of N, P, K and RC on the growth and yield of plants was different according to the age of the plants. K was the main factor to affecting the stem growth of young plant. N and K affected the yields of manure plant. K and RC were the main factors affecting the quality of tea. Different fertilizer treatments influenced the concentration and proportion of chemical compositions in tea, and resulted in changes of teaquality. The correlation coefficient of water soluble solids, caffeine, tea polyphenols, reductive sugars, and catchins with tea quality was 0.7799, 0.7268, 0.6651, 0.6589, 0.6151 and 0.5783.respectively.

Effects of extreme warming and rainfall on carbon and nitrogen nutrients status and enzyme activities in tea garden soils with different planting ages

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the effects of high temperature and rainfall on soil carbon and nitrogen variations and enzyme activi-ties, by conducting experiments on different tea soils at cultivation ages of 0, 10, 30, and 50 years. The result indicated that under 35 ℃treatment condition, the soil total organic carbon, ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, microbial carbon contents, and the activity of extra-cellular enzymes related to soil carbon decreased while the extracellular enzymes related to soil nitrogen increased. 40 ℃treatment can sig-nificantly reduce the content of carbon and nitrogen in soil and the activity of extracellular enzymes related to carbon and nitrogen of soil. Af-terwards, the following simulated rainfall presented a positive effect on the recovery of soil microbial biomass carbon and extracellular en-zyme activity, but there was no significant effect on other nutrient indexes. Above all, the tea soil under cultivation age 30 years exhibited higher nutrient content of carbon, nitrogen and enzyme activity, meaning that the soil ecosystem stability and the resistance ability to extreme high temperature and rainfall variation are better than other soil cultivation ages.
Effects of Long-term Different Fertilization on Carbon, Nitrogen and Phosphorus Pools in Tea Garden Soils

Abstract:Thirty-four soil samples we re collected from 34 individual tea gardens in the western part of Zhejiang Province, and divided into three tea garden groups with different fertilization types, including combined application of chemical and organic fertilizers, application of chemical fertilizers, and no fertilizer. The soil samples were characterized by means of chemical analysis to explore the effects of long-term different fertilization on carbon,nitrogen and phosphorus pools in tea garden soils. The results showed that there were no significant differences in soil p H and content of organic carbon among three tea garden groups. The tea garden soils with application of chemical fertilizers or combined application of chemical and organic fertilizers had higher concentrations of total P, total N, and available P than those without application of fertilizers. The ratios of P/C and N/C of the soils decreased in the sequence of application of chemical fertilizers combined application of chemical and organic fertilizers no fertilizers. The proportion of organic P in total P in the soils with combined application of chemical and organic fertilizers was significantly higher than those of soils with application chemical fertilizers, and no fertilizers. The proportion of Ca-P in inorganic P in the soils with application chemical fertilizers was significantly higher than those of soils with combined application of chemical and organic fertilizers, and no fertilizers. However, the proportion of occluded P in inorganic P in the soils with no fertilizers was significantly higher than those of soils with combined application of chemical and organic fertilizers, and application chemical fertilizers. The soils with application of chemical fertilizers had higher NO3--N/NH4+-N and available inorganic N. Combined application of chemical and organic fertilizers could increase concentrations of particulate organic carbon, active organic carbon and microbial carbon in the soils. Principal component analysis showed that different fertilization modes had resulted into differentiation of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus pools in tea garden soils. The clustering results of 34 soil samples by principal component analysis based on 19 indices of C, N, P in soils showed that the differences in compositions of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus among the soils were mainly related with fertilization types. The soils with combined application of chemical and inorganic fertilizers had optimum carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus.

Abstract:The achievements in the 20th century and the future development trend of tea breeding and tea cultivation in China were described in the present paper. China, with 1,076,220 ha tea field, is now one of the major tea producing and tea exporting countries in the world and its tea field area ranked the first in the world. Chinese tea industry has been greatly developed in the 20th century because of the development of tea breeding and cultivation techniques.The development of tea breeding in China was benefited from the techniques of vegetable propagation, cross breeding, chemically and physically induced mutation as well as bio-technique and molecular biological technique. There were five stages in the development of tea breeding in China, i.e. the non-organized stage, clonal tea breeding stage, yield breeding stage, quality breeding stage and resistance breeding stage.The tea production in China has been fast developed in the 20th century, especially in the last 50 years. It was mainly benefited from the increase of planting density, the popularization of improved tea cultivars, the manuring technique, the efficient and low-cost cultivation technique.The development trend in Chinese tea breeding will be pest-resistance breeding, high quality breeding and breeding of some special use tea cultivars such as those with high content of catechins, low content of caffeine and low activity of polyphenol oxidase. Intensive management, low-cost and sustainable production will be the important research topics in Chinese tea cultivation in the early decades of the 21st century.
Soil microbial biomass and activity in Chinese tea gardens of varying stand age and productivity

Abstract:Tea (Camellia sinensis) is a globally important crop and is unusual because it both requires an acid soil and acidifies soil. Tea stands tend to be extremely heavily fertilized in order to improve yield and quality, resulting in a great potential for diffuse pollution. The microbial ecology of tea soils remains poorly understood; an improved understanding is necessary as processes affecting nutrient availability and loss pathways are microbially mediated. We therefore examined the relationships between soil characteristics (pH, organic C, total N, total P, available P, exchangeable Al), the soil microbial biomass (biomass C, biomass ninhydrin-N, ATP, phospholipid fatty acids—PLFAs) and its activities (respiration, net mineralization and nitrification). At the Tea Research Institute, Hangzhou (TRI), we compared fields of different productivity levels (low, medium and high) and at Hongjiashan village (HJS) we compared fields of different stand age (9, 50 and 90 years). At both sites tea soils were compared with adjacent forest soils. At both sites, soil pH was highest in the forest soil and decreased with increasing productivity and age of the tea stand. Soil microbial biomass C and biomass ninhydrin-N were significantly affected by tea production. At TRI, microbial biomass C declined in the order forest>low>high>middle production and at HJS in the order stand age 50>age 9>forest>age 90. Soil pH had a strong influence on the microbial biomass, demonstrated by positive linear correlations with: microbial biomass C, microbial biomass ninhydrin-N, the microbial biomass C:organic C ratio, the microbial biomass ninhydrin-N:total N ratio, the respiration rate and specific respiration rate. Above pH(KCl) 3.5 there was net N mineralization and nitrification, and below this threshold some samples showed net immobilization of N. A principal component (PC) analysis of PLFA data showed a consistent shift in the community composition with productivity level and stand age. The ratio of fungal:bacterial PLFA biomarkers was negatively and linearly correlated with specific respiration in the soils from HJS (r2=0.93, p=0.03). Our results demonstrate that tea cultivation intensity and duration have a strong impact on the microbial community structure, biomass and its functioning, likely through soil acidification and fertilizer addition.

Abstract:Nitrogen fertilizer is crucial in tea plantation management, but its effects on tea quality, soil environment, and microbial communities under different fertilization schemes remain unclear. his study evaluated the impacts of six nitrogen application levels on tea quality, soil physicochemical properties, and microbial community structures, aiming to reveal the optimization effects of nitrogen application on the soil environment and its significance for sustainable agriculture. Results showed that nitrogen application (especially under N3 and N4 treatments) increased total free amino acid (TA) content, total catechin content, and caffeine content in tea leaves, but reduced the TP/TA ratio. Significant changes in soil physicochemical properties were observed, including a decrease in pH, an increase in electrical conductivity (EC), higher levels of available potassium (Ava K) and available phosphorus (Ava P), an increase in soil organic carbon (SOC) content, and a reduction in available nitrogen (Ava N) content. These changes indicate that nitrogen application optimized soil nutrient status to some extent but may also contribute to environmental issues such as soil acidification. Regarding soil microbial communities, higher nitrogen application led to an increase in beneficial bacteria abundance, a more complex microbial community structure, and tighter interaction networks. Mantal Test analysis indicated that the changes in tea leaf biochemical components under nitrogen fertilization were the result of the combined effects of soil physicochemical properties and key microbial communities. Furthermore, soil bacterial characteristics were more strongly correlated with changes in tea quality. Based on random forest model analysis, p__Proteobacteria (associated with total catechin and caffeine) and p__Firmicutes (associated with TP/TA) were the key microbial communities influencing tea flavor components, while soil EC (affecting total catechin and TP/TA) and SOC content (affecting caffeine) were the key soil physicochemical properties influencing tea flavor components. Overall, nitrogen application not only improved tea quality but also significantly impacted soil environment and microbial community structure, indicating that appropriate nitrogen application (194.58 to 227.01 kg N ha−1) plays a vital role in enhancing tea quality and promoting sustainable management of soil ecosystems.

Abstract:Tea (Camellia sinensis L.), an important economic crop in China, is highly favored by the population. Microorganisms can help plants acquire soil nutrients and cope with various stresses, and the diversity and structural composition of the rhizosphere microbial community of tea plants are crucial for ensuring the growth and quality of tea leaves. Therefore, we studied the differences in soil nutrients, enzyme activities and microbial communities between two different tea gardens (a tableland tea garden and an ancient tea plantation) in different ecological niches (rhizosphere and bulk soil), as well as the impacts they experienced. The results show that the soil pH levels in the ancient tea plantation were within the optimal range (4.5–5.5), and both rhizosphere and bulk soil nutrients in the ancient tea plantation were higher than those in the tableland tea garden, except for TP; the nutrients in the rhizospheres of ancient tea trees were more abundant. Moreover, higher enzyme activities were observed in the rhizosphere soil than those in the bulk soil in both tea gardens, and both the tableland and ancient tea garden soils were subjected to a certain degree of C&N limitations. The microbial communities of the two tea gardens were dominated by bacteria, but the α-diversity of the bacterial and fungal communities in the rhizosphere soil of the tableland tea garden was higher than that in the ancient tea plantation. The bacterial communities were largely dominated by Proteobacteria and Acidobacteriota, and the fungal communities were largely dominated by Ascomycota and Basidiomycota in the two tea gardens. The structure and composition of soil bacterial communities in the two tea gardens were similar, whereas significant differences were observed in the fungal communities. In addition, soil pH and SWC were the key factors influencing the fungal community in both the rhizosphere and bulk soil in the two tea gardens, whereas the bacterial community was more significantly affected by soil TN, NH4+-N, SWC and DON. These findings provide essential foundational information for the preservation of ancient tea plantations, the ecological adaptability of ancient tea trees and the management of tableland tea gardens.

Abstract:In southern China ,many drinking water reservoirs and ponds are under a certain degree of eutrophication conditions . To effectively ensure the safety of drinking water , it is necessary to develop long-term and systemic prevention programs for these reservoirs and ponds .This paper made an analysis on restriction nutrients for algae growth in drinking water sources of southern China , provided suggestions for determing the target influent concentration of nutrients and summarized the methods for analyzing the main pollution source . In addition ,authors laid stress on the applicability anakysis of treatment technologies such as sediment pollution emission ,agricultural nonpoint source pollutions ,and algae blooms , their main technical parameters were summarized .

Abstract:Four tea production sites,located in Changxing,Lanxi,Shaoxing and Longquan,were selected to study the flows of Zn,Cu,Pb,Cd,Hg,and As loaded by organic manure,chemical fertilizers,atmospheric deposition,tea harvest,and surface runoff in tea production system through one-year field monitoring.Annual mass balance of the heavy metals in the tea production system and its influencing factors were also discussed.The results showed that the flows of the heavy metals in input materials and agricultural products and drainages in the tea production systems varied spatially with investigated samples and fields.Inputs of Zn,Cu,and Pb in the tea gardens were mainly from atmospheric deposition,followed by organic manure.That of As was mainly from atmospheric deposition,followed by chemical fertilizers.Those of Cd and Hg were mainly from chemical fertilizers.In the tea gardens where organic manures were applied as main nutrients,annual input amounts of Zn,Cu,Pb,Cd,Hg,and As were 1026.4,366.8,77.0,3.14,0.83,and 40.3 g/hm2,respectively.While annual output amounts of Zn,Cu,Pb,Cd,Hg,and As were 187.1,63.2,10.7,0.55,0.36,and 32.9 g/hm2,respectively.Inputs of Zn,Cu,Cd and Hg in the tea garden were mainly from organic manure,followed by atmospheric deposition.Those of Pb and As were mainly from atmospheric deposition,followed by organic manure.Outputs of Zn and Cu in the way of surface runoff were higher than those in the way of tea harvest,and those of Pb,Cd,Hg,and As in the way of tea harvest were much higher than those in the way of surface runoff.Annual mass balances of Zn,Cu,Pb,Cd,Hg,and As were 313.0,11.8,41.2,2.95,0.22,and 2.18 g/hm2 for tea gardens where chemical fertilizers were applied as main nutrients,and 849.3,303.4,66.3,2.59,0.47,and 7.43 g/hm2 for tea gardens where organic manures were applied as main nutrients.The annual mass balances of the heavy metals were higher in the tea gardens where organic manures were applied as main nutrients than those where chemical fertilizers were applied as main nutrients.
Influence of Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers on Tea Growth and Quality and Soil Properties of Tea Orchards' Top Rhizosphere Soil

Abstract:Organic-based fertilizers have been ratified to be effective in ameliorating tea growth and the fertility of soil. However, the effect of integrated fertilization on tea growth and quality and the chemical properties of the soil in tea gardens are unclear. To address this, from 2020 to 2021, five different treatments were carried out in the greenhouse of the Tea Research Institute, Hangzhou, CAAS, including CK (control), NPK (chemical fertilizers), RC (rapeseed cake), NPK+B (chemical fertilizer + biochar), and NPK+RC, to investigate the effects of different fertilizations on soil chemistry and tea growth and quality. The results indicated that NPK+B and NPK+RC significantly improved the different amino acid and catechin concentrations in the young shoots, stems, and roots of the tea compared to the CK. The plant growth parameters, e.g., the plant height, no. of leaves, mid-stem girth, and fresh weights of stems and leaves, were significantly increased with integrated fertilization (NPK+B and NPK+RC) compared to the CK and solo organic and inorganic fertilizers. The chlorophyll contents (Chl a, Chl b, and Chl a+b) were generally higher with NPK+RC than with the CK (37%, 35%, and 36%), RC (14%, 26%, and 18%), and NPK (9%, 13%, and 11%) treatments. Integrated fertilization buffered the acidic soil of the tea garden and decreased the soil C:N ratio. NPK+RC also significantly increased the soil's total C (31% and 16%), N (43% and 31%), P (65% and 40%), available P (31% and 58%), K (70% and 25%), nitrate (504% and 188%), and ammonium (267% and 146%) concentrations compared to the CK and RC. The soil macro- (Mg and Ca) and micronutrients (Mn, Fe, Zn, and Cu) were significantly improved by the RC (100% and 72%) (49%, 161%, 112%, and 40%) and NPK+RC (88% and 48%) (47%, 75%, 45%, and 14%) compared to the CK. The chlorophyll contents and soil macro- and micronutrients were all significantly positively correlated with tea quality (amino acids and catechin contents) and growth. These results indicated that integrated fertilization improved the soil nutrient status, which is associated with the improvement of tea growth and quality. Thus, integrated nutrient management is a feasible tool for improving tea growth, quality, and low nutrient levels in the soil.

Abstract:Fertilization is an essential aspect of tea plantation management that supports a sustainable tea production and drastically influences soil microbial communities. However, few research studies have focused on the differences of microbial communities and the variation in tea quality in response to different fertilization treatments. In this work, the soil fertility, tea quality, and soil microbial communities were investigated in two domestic tea plantations following the application of chemical and organic fertilizers. We determined the content of mineral elements in the soil, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and found that the supplementation of chemical fertilizer directly increased the content of mineral elements. However, the application of organic fertilizer significantly improved the accumulation of tea polyphenols and reduced the content of caffeine. Furthermore, amplicon sequencing results showed that the different ways of applying fertilizer have limited effect on the alpha diversity of the microbial community in the soil while the beta diversity was remarkably influenced. This work also suggests that the bacterial community structure and abundance were also relatively constant while the fungal community structure and abundance were dramatically influenced; for example, Chaetomiaceae at the family level, Hypocreaceae at the order level, Trichoderma at the genus level, and Fusarium oxysporum at the species level were predominantly enriched in the tea plantation applying organic fertilizer. Moreover, the bacterial and fungal biomarkers were also analyzed and it was found that Proteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria (bacteria) and Tremellomycetes (fungi) were potentially characterized as biomarkers in the plantation under organic fertilization. These results provide a valuable basis for the application of organic fertilizer to improve the soil of tea plantations in the future.
