Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of nonsurgical treatment for primary liver cancer in the elderly (60-74yr).Methods:The effects of nonsurgical treatment in 52 elderly patients were retrospectively analysed and compared with those in 150 nonelderly patients (17-58 yr). Among the 52 elderly patients, 24 received transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) or hepatic arterial chemoinfusion (HAI) combined with Chinese herbs, and 28 cases received TACE or HAI combined with irradiation and Chinese herbs. Results:In the elderly group, the response rate was 38.5% and the survival rates at 1-,3-,5-year were 66.7%,51.0% and 28.8%,respectively; in the nonelderly group, the response rate was 40.7% and the 1-,3-,5-year survival rates were 56.9%, 28.4% and 13.4%, respectively. There was no significant difference of response rate and side effects between these two groups, but the difference of survival rates at 3-,and 5-year was significant (P<0.01).Conclusions:Some therapeutic effects can be achieved for elderly patients with primary liver cancer.
