Abstract:Thin film lubrication(TFL)is a lubrication regime between elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) and boundary lubrication, which has been the hot research area in tribology recently. Since the film thickness in such regime ranges from several to several tens of nanometers, the relation and difference between TFL and EHL becomes much important for the understanding of the mechanism of TFL. The mechanism of the transition from EHL to TFL was investigated. The film thickness with different lubricants, velocities, and loads was measured. It was found that the variation of the film thickness in thin film lubrication is not as same as that in elastohydrodynamic lubrication. With the decrease of velocity, a turning point could be found to classify thin film lubrication from elastohydrodynamic lubrication. A thin film lubrication model consisting of a fluid layer, an ordered liquid layer, and an adsorbed layer was established. The functions of the various layers were discussed.
