Abstract:This paper introduces consistents of an intelligent EEG monitor, including its hardware and software. Emphasis is put on the discussion about the detection of epilepsy waves with wavelet transform. At last, analysis of clinical EEG data show that this system has achieved high sensitivity and selectivity.

Abstract:Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases, and video EEG is the most commonly used examination method for epilepsy diagnosis. However, since the video EEG examination lasts for hours, the escort has a heavy burden, and the large amount of video EEG data needs to be visually checked by the doctor. The real-time detection of epileptic seizures can reduce the stress of the escort and provide a mark for the doctor to check the EEG efficiently. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network with specified signal representation for real-time seizure detection and add a smoothing filter on the model output to enhance performance. First, we compare the performance of real-time epileptic seizure detection model under different signal representations. Then we use the best signal representation for further analysis in real-time scenario. In the experiment, the EEG data of 9 patients in the CHB-MIT public data set was used, and a patient-specific neural network was trained for each individual. The recall was 97%, the false alarm was 0.219 times per hour, and the latency time was 3.4s for real-time seizure event detection. The results show that this method can realize the real-time detection of epileptic seizures, which is of great significance to the subsequent system design combined with actual scenes.

Abstract:Epilepsy is a disease in which patients undergo seizures caused by brain functionality disorder. Clinically, it is usually diagnosed by experienced clinicians according to continuous electroencephalography (cEEG), which is time consuming even for experienced doctors. Meanwhile, amplitude integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) has shown potential to detect epileptic seizures. Therefore, the paper proposes a hybrid seizure detection algorithm by combining cEEG-based seizure detection algorithm and aEEG-based seizure detection algorithm to detect seizures. In cEEG-based seizure detection algorithm, cEEG signals are divided into 5 s epoch with 4 s overlap and multi-domain features are extracted from each epoch. Then random forest classification is applied to do seizure detection. In aEEG-based seizure detection algorithm, morphological filter is applied to do spike detection and determine whether there are seizures after transforming the cEEG signals into aEEG signals. In order to evaluate the generality of the proposed method, experiments are performed on two independent datasets, including a publicly available EEG dataset (CHB-MIT) and an epileptic dataset collected by using the EEG device developed by the Hangzhou Neuro Science and Technology Co., Ltd. In the CHB-MIT dataset, the accuracy (AC), specificity (SP), sensitivity based on the event (SE), and false positive ratio based on the event (FPRE) obtained by the hybrid method are 99.36%, 82.98%, 99.41%, and 0.57 times/h, respectively. In the dataset we collected, the AC, SP, SE, and FPRE obtained by the hybrid method are 99.23%, 89.47%, 99.23%, and 0.71 times/h, respectively. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is competitive with state-of-the-art methods and results. Furthermore, basing on the hybrid method, this paper has developed a portable automatic seizure detection system, which can reduce the burden of clinicians in processing the large amounts of cEEG signals by detecting seizure automatically.
Detection of Epileptic Waves in EEG Based on Wavelet Transform

Abstract:Detection of epileptic waves in EEG is particularly helpful in the interpretation of the underlying process in seizures. This study is aimed at providing a new method for automatic detection of epileptic waves through the wavelet analysis of EEGs. It mainly deals with the detection of spikes or spike-waves based on wavelet transform. Since spikes and spike-waves contain high frequency energy, they will be represented in a particular scale localized in a small time window. According to these feature waveforms of epileptic waves, a continuous processing system for epileptic waveforms detection is constructed. We apply discrete wavelet transform on EEGs. Because of the time-frequency domain localization of wavelet transforms, we can get the local maximal positions across several successive dyadic scales of wavelet transform. And these positions indicate the points of sharp transitions in EEGs. Then we calculate the distance between every two successive maximal positions in each scale. This distance stands for the period of subwave. Furthermore, the distribution of subwave periods of each scale can be worked out. Then, comparing the distribution of normal EEG's and epileptic EEG's. The difference between these two waveforms provides us the criteria for automatic detection and classification. In order to reduce the detection workload, we also compare the detection efficiency of each scale. The scale that provides highest accuracy is selected for our automatic detection system. The results presented in this study show that scale 3 provides the best detection accuracy. So, scale 3 is deemed to be the proper scale for automatic detection. This system has the following advantages: (1) Reduced the workload significantly by selecting proper scale(s) for automatic selection; (2) Enhanced the detection accuracy by selecting proper criteria and threshold; (3) Capable of continuous detection; (4) It is also fit for the detection of other biomedical signals. This system showed good performance, and the initial clinical results obtained are also encouraging.

Abstract:Epileptic seizures are caused by excessive, synchronized activity of large groups of neurons. In human electroencephalograph (EEG), they are reflected by multiple epileptic characteristic waves. Based on the idea of template matching, this paper presents a patient-specific approach for the automatic detection of epileptic seizures. In our method, a set of wavelets are constructed based on the epileptic characteristic waves extracted from training EEG signals, and then continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is performed on the recorded EEG. The coefficients of CWT reflect the similarity of the recorded EEG and the epileptic characteristic waveforms and thus can be used to detect if the epileptic characteristic waveforms exist in the EEG. After applying data fusion to the CWT coefficient matrices corresponding to the multiple constructed wavelets, the boundaries of seizures can be determined. In the experiment, our constructed wavelets performed better in the detection of epileptic characteristic waves compared to the Daubechies wavelet. We analyzed the EEG of 10 patients and our method detected 32 out of 34 seizures and declared five false detections. Therefore, our method is promising for the automatic detection of epileptic seizures and the real-time monitoring of patients' EEG signal.

Abstract:Epilepsy is one of the most common complex brain disorders which is a chronic non-communicable disease caused by paroxysmal abnormal super-synchronous electrical activity of brain neurons. This paper proposed an electroencephalogram (EEG) based real-time approach to detect epilepsy seizures. Discrete wavelet transform and eight eigenvalues’ algorithms are applied to extract features in different sub-frequency bands. Then support vector machine is employed for three-classes classification of health control, seizure free and seizure active, and finally RUSBoosted tree Ensemble method is used for real-time seizure onset detection. The proposed algorithm is evaluated using two public datasets: one short-term dataset named UB and one long-term dataset named CHB-MIT. The results show that the algorithm achieves 97% accuracy and 96.67% sensitivity in the three-classes classification of health control, seizure-free and seizure-active groups in UB dataset, and 96.38% accuracy, 96.15% sensitivity, 3.24% false positive rate for the real time seizure onset detection in CHB-MIT Dataset.

Abstract:Automatic seizure detection is of great significance for epilepsy long-term monitoring, diagnosis, and rehabilitation, and it is the key to closed-loop brain stimulation. This paper presents a novel wavelet-based automatic seizure detection method with high sensitivity. The proposed method first conducts wavelet decomposition of multi-channel intracranial EEG (iEEG) with five scales, and selects three frequency bands of them for subsequent processing. Effective features are extracted, such as relative energy, relative amplitude, coefficient of variation and fluctuation index at the selected scales, and then these features are sent into the support vector machine for training and classification. Afterwards a postprocessing is applied on the raw classification results to obtain more accurate and stable results. Postprocessing includes smoothing, multi-channel decision fusion and collar technique. Its performance is evaluated on a large dataset of 509 h from 21 epileptic patients. Experiments show that the proposed method could achieve a sensitivity of 94.46% and a specificity of 95.26% with a false detection rate of 0.58/h for seizure detection in long-term iEEG.

With the use of the public telephone network to transport signals and the portable EEG recording system as the sender of system, the EEG data of 20 standard leads can be transmitted to the receiver of system (monitoring center) synchronously. And at the monitoring center, the waves can be displayed real-time, freezing, stored, reviewed, analyzed and printed, thus providing aid in remote diagnosis and treatment consultations.

Abstract:The growing rate of public health problem for increasing number of people afflicted with poor sleep quality suggests the importance of developing portable sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring systems. The system could record the overnight EEG signal, classify sleep stages automatically, and grade the sleep quality. We in our laboratory collected the signals in an easy way using a single channel with three electrodes which were placed in frontal position in case of the electrode drop-off during sleep. For a test, either silver disc electrodes or disposable medical electrocardiographic electrodes were used. Sleep EEG recorded by the two types of electrodes was compared to each other so as to find out which type was more suitable. Two algorithms were used for sleep EEG processing, i. e. amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) algorithm and sample entropy algorithm. Results showed that both algorithms could perform sleep stage classification and quality evaluation automatically. The present designed system could be used to monitor overnight sleep and provide quantitative evaluation.

Abstract:This paper proposed a new scheme for detecting epileptiform activity in 8-channel EEG based on the characteristic of a multi-resolution analysis. The EEG signal on each channel was decomposed to five levels using discrete wavelet transform. Formed wavelet coefficients and standard deviation of all 8-channel raw data to compute adaptive threshold, which applied on sub-bands1, 2 and 3. Then extracted the spike portion of EEG signal extracted from the raw data. The key points of this research work were identification of a suitable wavelet for decomposition of EEG signals, recognition of a proper resolution level, and computation of a dynamic threshold. The experiment results show that the proposed method offers a fast and effective measure for detecting epileptiform activity in human EEG.

Abstract:The epilepsy is a type of common neurological disorder plaguing many people around the world. A novel method based on the dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT), in this study, is proposed to develop a reliable diagnosis method for the epileptic EEG detection. We explore the ability of DT CWT to decompose the original EEG into five constituent sub-bands, which are associated with nonlinear features such as the Hurst exponent (H), Fractal Dimension (FD) and Permutation Entropy (PE). Furthermore, influences of different filter types on the DT-CWT are considered in this study as well. With these features, the support vector machine (SVM) configured with filters of the near-symmetric 13/19 tap filters (NS 13/19) and Q-shift 14/14 tap filters (QS 14/14) is found to achieve the preferable classification accuracy of 98.87%, which is visibly higher than that with discrete wavelet transform (DWT)based features. Results demonstrate that the technique proposed by us can not only provide significant performance with less computational cost but also can implement simply. It will be a potential method for practical applications extended to the development of a real-time brain monitoring system. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease associated with abnormal neuronal activity in the brain. Seizure detection algorithms are essential in reducing the workload of medical staff reviewing electroencephalogram (EEG) records. In this work, we propose a novel automatic epileptic EEG detection method based on Stockwell transform and Transformer. First, the S-transform is applied to the original EEG segments, acquiring accurate time-frequency representations. Subsequently, the obtained time-frequency matrices are grouped into different EEG rhythm blocks and compressed as vectors in these EEG sub-bands. After that, these feature vectors are fed into the Transformer network for feature selection and classification. Moreover, a series of post-processing methods were introduced to enhance the efficiency of the system. When evaluating the public CHB-MIT database, the proposed algorithm achieved an accuracy of 96.15%, a sensitivity of 96.11%, a specificity of 96.38%, a precision of 96.33%, and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.98 in segment-based experiments, along with a sensitivity of 96.57%, a false detection rate of 0.38/h, and a delay of 20.62 s in event-based experiments. These outstanding results demonstrate the feasibility of implementing this seizure detection method in future clinical applications.
A Portable Eeg Monitoring System For Neonatal Seizures

Abstract:This paper introduces a portable electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring system for neonatal seizures. The hardware circuit can acquire 8 channels of EEG data or expand to 32 channels. It is characterized in high accuracy, small size, and low power consumption, which can meet the needs of long-term bedside monitoring of newborns. Users can choose different modes to view the historical data of the acquired EEG signals, or real-time data transmitted via WiFi. To further analyze and process the data, this paper introduces a machine learning-based scheme to automatically distinguish between normal and abnormal amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) signals. The program extracts the effective feature representation from the data and trains the model. The model can predict the class of unknown aEEG samples, which is helpful for further clinical detection of neonatal brain conditions.

Abstract:Epilepsy involves brain abnormalities that may cause sudden seizures or other uncontrollable body activities. Epilepsy may have substantial impacts on the patient's quality of life, and its detection heavily relies on tedious and time-consuming manual curation by experienced clinicians, based on EEG signals. Most existing EEG-based seizure detection algorithms are patient-dependent and train a detection model for each patient. A new patient can only be monitored effectively after several episodes of epileptic seizures. This study investigates the patient-independent detection of seizure events using the open dataset CHB-MIT Scalp EEG. First, a novel feature extraction algorithm called MinMaxHist is proposed to measure the topological patterns of the EEG signals. Following this, MinMaxHist and several other feature extraction algorithms are applied to parameterize the EEG signals. Next, a comprehensive series of feature screening and classification optimization experiments are conducted, and finally, an optimized EEG-based seizure detection model is presented that can achieve overall values for accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, Matthews correlation coefficient, and Kappa of 0.8627, 0.8032, 0.9222, 0.7504 and 0.7254, respectively, with only 30 features. The classification accuracy of the method with MinMaxHist features was 0.0464 higher than that without MinMaxHist features. Compared with existing methods, the proposed algorithm achieved higher accuracy and sensitivity, as shown in the experimental results.

Abstract:Epileptic seizure detection is commonly implemented by expert clinicians with visual observation of electroencephalography (EEG) signals, which tends to be time consuming and sensitive to bias. The epileptic detection in most previous research suffers from low power and unsuitability for processing large datasets. Therefore, a computerized epileptic seizure detection method is highly required to eradicate the aforementioned problems, expedite epilepsy research and aid medical professionals. In this work, we propose an automatic epilepsy diagnosis framework based on the combination of multi-domain feature extraction and nonlinear analysis of EEG signals. Firstly, EEG signals are pre-processed by using the wavelet threshold method to remove the artifacts. We then extract representative features in the time domain, frequency domain, time-frequency domain and nonlinear analysis features based on the information theory. These features are further extracted in five frequency sub-bands based on the clinical interest, and the dimension of the original feature space is then reduced by using both a principal component analysis and an analysis of variance. Furthermore, the optimal combination of the extracted features is identified and evaluated via different classifiers for the epileptic seizure detection of EEG signals. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is investigated by using a public EEG database at the University Hospital Bonn, Germany. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed epileptic seizure detection method can achieve a high average accuracy of 99.25%, indicating a powerful method in the detection and classification of epileptic seizures. The proposed seizure detection scheme is thus hoped to eliminate the burden of expert clinicians when they are processing a large number of data by visual observation and to speed-up the epilepsy diagnosis.

A New Method Based on CEEMD Combined With Iterative Feature Reduction for Aided Diagnosis of Epileptic EEG

Abstract:In the clinical diagnosis of epileptic diseases, the intelligent diagnosis of epileptic electroencephalogram (EEG) signals has become a research focus in the field of brain diseases. In order to solve the problem of time-consuming and easily influenced by human subjective factors, artificial intelligence pattern recognition algorithm has been applied to EEG signals recognition. However, at present, the common empirical mode decomposition (EMD) signal decomposition algorithm does not consider the problem of mode aliasing. The EEG features obtained by feature extraction may be mixed with some unimportant features that affect the classification accuracy. In this paper, we proposed a new method based on complementary ensemble empirical mode decomposition (CEEMD) combined with iterative feature reduction for aided diagnosis of epileptic EEG. First of all, the evaluation indexes of decomposing and reconstructing signals by several methods were compared. The CEEMD was selected as the decomposition method of the signals. Then, the support vector machine recursive elimination (SVM-RFE) was used to reduce 9 features extracted from EEG data. The support vector classification of the gray wolf optimizer (GWO-SVC) recognition model was established for different feature subsets. By comparing the classification accuracy of training set and test set of different feature subsets, and considering the complexity of the model reflected by the number of features selected by SVM-RFE, the analysis showed that the 6 feature subsets with fewer features and higher classification accuracy could reflect the key information of epileptic EEG. The accuracy of the training set classification was 99.38% and the test set was as high as 100%. The recognition time was only 1.6551 s. Finally, in order to verify the reliability of the algorithm proposed in this paper, the proposed algorithm compared with the classification model established by the raw EEG signals and the optimization model established by other intelligent optimization algorithms. It is found that the algorithm used in this paper has higher classification accuracy and faster recognition time than other processing methods. The experimental results show that CEEMD combined with SVM-RFE is feasible for rapid and accurate recognition of EEG signals, which provides a theoretical basis for the aided diagnosis of epilepsy.

Abstract:This paper presented the design of a wearable EEG-based control network and emergency medical assistance system which works and is now under test by volunteers. The system can detect the user's blink control signal, heart rates and brain signal, etc. A new scheme to control the device for disabilities was proposed in the paper. A DSP was used to calculate and process these data which can also send messages of the patients to the control center and make emergency calls to the nearest hospital for the patients, especially for patients which suffered from epilepsy and disabilities. The proposed system was proved to be practical and helpful in assisting the injured, elderly and disabled groups.
