Abstract:Objective To evaluate deficits of cognitive function in children with different clinical subtypes of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods The ADHD clinical subtypes, including predominantly inattention (I), predominantly hyperactive impulsive (HI) and combined type (C), were classified according to the Fourth Edition of Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM Ⅳ) criteria. Fifty five unmedicated ADHD children (ADHD I, n =22; ADHD HI, n =11; ADHD C, n =22) with age range of 7 13 years were involved in the study, and 18 normal children matched by age and gender were recruited as control. All participants were administered five tests of cognitive function (the Chinese version of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Wechsler Memory Scale, Number Cancellation Test, Raven′s Standard Progressive Matrices and Stroop Test). Results Although the ADHD children performed significantly worse than controls on most of above cognitive function tests, there was no difference between the three subtype groups ( P 0.05). Conclusion Three subtypes of ADHD have the similar cognitive model. They all show impairments in cognitive function, such as intelligence, memory, attention, plan and selective inhibition compared with normal controls.
