Abstract:We characterize a nonlinear full invariant of compact Banach-space maps: Let ( X , ‖.‖) and ( Y , ‖.‖) be two Banach spaces and P C ( X , Y ) be all compact maps which map ( X , ‖.‖) to ( Y , ‖.‖). Then each weak operator-topology subseries-convergent series ∑ i P i in P c ( X , Y ) is also uniform-topology subseries-convergent iff each bounded map from ( X , ‖.‖) to ( l 1 , ‖.‖ 1 ) is a compact map. The necessary condition for each weak operator-topology subseries-convergent series ∑ i P i in P C ( X , Y ) to be also uniform-topology subseries-convergent is that ( X , ‖.‖) and ( X ′, ‖.‖) both contain no copy of c 0 . This necessary condition is not sufficient.

Abstract:A characterization of unconditional convergent series is given for the case of sequentially complete locally convex spaces. From it we show that if E is a barrelled space with continuous dual E', then (E', beta(E', E)) contains no copy of (c(0), parallel to.parallel to(infinity)) if and only if every continuous linear operator T : E --> l(1) is both compact and sequentially compact.

Abstract:In this paper,exact controllability and exact null controllability of infinite di- mensional linear systems are considered in non-reflexive state space and reflexive control space.For the systems governed by C-semigroups,the criteria for exact controllability and exact null controllability via controls in LP([O,T],U),1<p≤∞are obtained.For the sys- tems governed by C_0-semigroups,the authors also get a necessary and sufficient condition for exact null controllability via controls in L~P([O,T],U),1<p≤∞.Two applications are given to illustrate the abstract results.

Abstract:First we develop a technique to construct Banach lattices of homogeneous polynomials. We obtain, in particular, conditions for the linear spans of all positive compact and weakly compact $n$-homogeneous polynomials between the Banach lattices $E$ and $F$, denoted by ${\cal P}_{\cal K}^r(^n E; F)$ and $\mathcal{P}_{\mathcal{W}}^r(^n E; F)$, to be Banach lattices with the polynomial regular norm. Next we study when the following are equivalent for ${\cal I} = {\cal K}$ or ${\cal I} = {\cal W}$: (1) The space $\mathcal{P}^r(^n E; F)$ of regular polynomials contains no copy of $c_0$. (2) ${\cal P}_{\mathcal{I}}^r(^n E; F)$ contains no copy of $c_0$. (3) ${\cal P}_{\mathcal{I}}^r(^n E; F)$ is a projection band in $\mathcal{P}^r(^n E; F)$. (4) Every positive polynomial in $\mathcal{P}^r(^n E; F)$ belongs to ${\cal P}_{\cal I}^r(^nE;F)$. The result we obtain in the compact case can be regarded as a lattice polynomial Kalton theorem. Most of our results and examples are new even in the linear case $n = 1$.

Abstract:In this paper, we first present some sufficient conditions for the upper semicontinuity and/or the continuity of the Bregman farthest-point map $Q_C^g$ and the relative farthest-point map $S_C^g$ for a nonempty $D$-maximally approximately compact subset $C$ of a Banach space $X$. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for a Klee set to be singleton in a Banach space $X$. Our results extend and/or improve the corresponding ones of [Bauschke, et al., J. Approx. Theory, 158 (2009), pp. 170-183] to infinite dimensional spaces.

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of exact null controllability of infinite dimensional linear systems in non-reflexive state spaces and reflexive control spaces. The starting point of this paper is the work of A. Vieru (Systems & Control Lett. 54 (2005) 331-337), which obtains the characterization of exact null controllability via bounded control functions in reflexive state spaces and control spaces (see Remark 2.2 of (Systems & Control Lett. 54 (2005) 331-337)). We will show here if the state space X is a general Banach space and U is reflexive, the similar result is also valid for exact null controllability via bounded control functions, which extends the results of (Systems & Control Lett. 54 (2005) 331-337)

Abstract:We present some sufficient conditions ensuring the upper semicontinuity and the continuity of the Bregman projection operator ΠCg and the relative projection operator PCg in terms of the D-approximate (weak) compactness for a nonempty closed set C in a Banach space X. We next present certain sufficient conditions as well as equivalent conditions for the convexity of a Chebyshev subset of a Banach space X. Our results extend the corresponding results of [H.H. Bauschke, X.F. Wang, J. Ye and X. M. Yuan, Bregman distances and Chebyshev sets, J. Approx. Theory 159 (2009) 3–25] to infinite dimensional spaces.

Abstract:It is proved that the infinitesimal generator A of a strongly continuous semigroup of Linear operators on a Hilbert space also generates a strongly continuous group if and only if the resolvent of -A, (lambda + A)(-1), is also a bounded function on some right-hand-side half plane of complex numbers, and converges strongly to zero as the real part of lambda tends to infinity. An application to a partial differential equation is given.

Abstract:Let $E$ be a Banach space with the $c^1$-norm $\|\cdot\|$ in $ E \backslash \{0\}$ and $S(E)=\{e\in E: \|e\|=1\}.$ In this paper, a geometry characteristic for $E$ is presented by using a geometrical construct of $S(E).$ That is, the following theorem holds : the norm of $E$ is of $c^1$ in $ E \backslash \{0\}$ if and only if $S(E)$ is a $c^1$-submanifold of $E,$ with ${\rm codim}S(E)=1.$ The theorem is very clear, however, its proof is non-trivial, which shows an intrinsic connection between the continuous differentiability of the norm $\|\cdot\|$ in $ E \backslash \{0\}$ and differential structure of $S(E).$

Abstract:For classes of topological vector spaces, we analyze under which conditions open-mapping, continuous-inverse, and closed-graph properties are equivalent. Here, closure under quotients with closed subspaces and closure under closed graphs are sufficient. We show that the class of barreled Ptak spaces is exactly the largest class of locally-convex topological vector spaces, which contains all Banach spaces, is closed under quotients with closed subspaces, is closed under closed graphs, is closed under continuous images, and for which an open-mapping theorem, a continuous-inverse theorem, and a closed-graph theorem holds. An analogous, weaker result also holds for the strictly larger class of barreled infra-Ptak spaces.

Abstract:A basic result in semigroup theory states that every $C_0$-semigroup is quasi-contractive with respect to some appropriately chosen equivalent norm. This paper contains a counterpart of this well-known fact. Namely, by examining the convergence of the Trotter-type formula $(e^{\frac{t}{n}A}P)^n$ (where $P$ denotes a bounded projection), we prove that whenever the generator $A$ is unbounded it is possible to introduce an equivalent norm on the space with respect to which the semigroup is {\it{not}} quasi-contractive.

Abstract:A topological space $Y$ has the property (B) of Banakh if there is a countable family $\{A_n:n\in \mathbb{N}\}$ of closed nowhere dense subsets of $Y$ absorbing all compact subsets of $Y$. In this note we show that the space $C_p(X)$ of continuous real-valued functions on a Tychonoff space $X$ with the topology of pointwise convergence, fails to satisfy the property (B) if and only if the space $X$ has the following property $(\kappa)$: every sequence of disjoint finite subsets of $X$ has a subsequence with point--finite open expansion. Additionally, we provide an analogous characterization for the compact--open topology on $C(X)$. Finally, we give examples of Tychonoff spaces $X$ whose all bounded subsets are finite, yet $X$ fails to have the property $(\kappa)$. This answers a question of Tkachuk.

Abstract:We present a characterization of one-component inner functions in terms of the location of their zeros and their associated singular measure. As consequence we answer several questions posed by J. Cima and R. Mortini. In particular we prove that for any inner function $\Theta$ whose singular set has measure zero, one can find a Blaschke product $B$ such that $\Theta B$ is one-component. We also obtain a characterization of one-component singular inner functions which is used to produce examples of discrete and continuous one-component singular inner functions.

Abstract:We show that every unital invertibility preserving linear map from a von Neumann algebra onto a semi-simple Banach algebra is a Jordan homomorphism; this gives an affirmative answer to a problem of Kaplansky for all von Neumann algebras.
