Abstract:Marketization of education has been identified as a salient feature in the global trend of educational reform. Phenomena of marketization have emerged in the higher education sector in the Chinese Mainland. In the Chinese context, however, the adaptation of a strategy toward marketization has not been accompanied by a concomitant retreat of the state as postulated by mainstream theories on the market. Conversely, the market is used as a more effective means of management in education. This paper examines the marketization of Chinese higher education by exploring the dialectic process that embodies globalization and localization. It argues that the marketization of Chinese higher education can best be understood in a reform context where any change initiated in the public sector must satisfy the demands of the new socialist market economic system, on the one hand, and maintain political stability, on the other.
