Abstract:Ultrasonic waves are mechanical waves with a frequency greater than 20,000 Hz. Ultrasonic waves are emitted by devices that are used in industry or that have a medical or aesthetic purpose. There is growing interest in the effect of ultrasound absorption on the human body, since people’s exposure to these acoustic waves has increased considerably in recent years. There are more and more devices that emit ultrasounds used for different sanitary procedures, aesthetic treatments and industrial processes, creating more possibilities of ultrasound noise, and therefore an increased risk of occupational hazard and occupational danger. Experiments on animals have shown damage to internal organs from receiving different ultrasonic frequencies. The main task of this work was to organize and summarize recent studies on ultrasound to reflect the current state of this technique and establish a systematic basis for future lines of research. This work has allowed us to better understand the unknown field of these high frequencies of sound, and highlights the need to carry out more studies on the ultrasound emissions that can be absorbed by the human body to determine how this energy could affect humans by calculating the maximum dose of exposure and developing manuals for the use of ultrasound-emitting equipment to protect the health of workers and all people. It is necessary to develop regulations by public administrations to improve the protection of workers, health professionals, patients and all people in general for better occupational safety, indoor environmental quality and environmental health.

Abstract:Ultrasound is widely used for medical diagnosis and increasingly for therapeutic purposes. An understanding of the bio-effects of sonography is important for clinicians and scientists working in the field because permanent damage to biological tissues can occur at high levels of exposure. Here the underlying principles of thermal mechanisms and the physical interactions of ultrasound with biological tissues are reviewed. Adverse health effects derived from cellular studies, animal studies and clinical reports are reviewed to provide insight into the in vitro and in vivo bio-effects of ultrasound.

Abstract:Noise is defined as any unwanted sound, and the health effects of noise have been well documented. Exposure to high levels of sound pressure can lead to hearing loss, tinnitus, and other health problems. Recently, there has been increasing concern about the potential health effects of exposure to ultrasound. Many countries have included ultrasonic noise on the list of factors hazardous to health in the working environment. Even though the frequency range above 20 kHz has been studied, there is not enough information regarding how it affects the human body. In addition, there are not any international standards for assessing ultrasonic noise at the work stations. While recent studies have helped advance the knowledge base in this area, they are still missing a considerable amount of data. This includes research into possible health consequences and improved dosimetry.

Abstract:Ultrasound (US) is acoustic energy that interacts with human tissues, thus, producing bioeffects that may be hazardous, especially in sensitive organs (i.e., brain, eye, heart, lung, and digestive tract) and embryos/fetuses. Two basic mechanisms of US interaction with biological systems have been identified: thermal and non-thermal. As a result, thermal and mechanical indexes have been developed to provide a means of assessing the potential for biological effects from exposure to diagnostic US. The main aims of this paper were to describe the models and assumptions used to estimate the "safety" of acoustic outputs and indices and to summarize the current state of knowledge about US-induced effects on living systems deriving from in vitro models and in vivo experiments on animals. This review work has made it possible to highlight the limits associated with the use of the estimated safety values of thermal and mechanical indices relating above all to the use of new US technologies, such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) shear wave elastography (SWE). US for diagnostic and research purposes has been officially declared safe, and no harmful biological effects in humans have yet been demonstrated with new imaging modalities; however, physicians should be adequately informed on the potential risks of biological effects. US exposure, according to the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle, should be as low as reasonably possible.

Abstract:A 2012 review of therapeutic ultrasound was published to educate researchers and physicians on potential applications and concerns for unintended bioeffects (doi: 10.7863/jum.2012.31.4.623). This review serves as an update to the parent article, highlighting advances in therapeutic ultrasound over the past 12 years. In addition to general mechanisms for bioeffects produced by therapeutic ultrasound, current applications, and the pre‐clinical and clinical stages are outlined. An overview is provided for image guidance methods to monitor and assess treatment progress. Finally, other topics relevant for the translation of therapeutic ultrasound are discussed, including computational modeling, tissue‐mimicking phantoms, and quality assurance protocols.

Abstract:—In recent years, the in-depth study of low-frequency sonophoresis (LFS) has greatly elucidated its biological effects in various therapeutic applications, including drug delivery, enhanced healing, thrombolytic technology, anti-inflammatory effects and tumor treatment. Specifically, numerous studies have reported its use in drug delivery and synergistic antitumor activity, indicating a new treatment direction for cancer. However, there are significant gaps in the understanding of LFS in terms of frequency and sound intensity safety; these issues are becoming increasingly important in understanding the biological effects of LFS ultrasound. This article reviews the treatment mechanism and current applications of LFS technology and discusses and summarizes its safety and application prospects.

Abstract:Background: Among the effective approaches developed for blood-brain barrier (BBB) opening, ultrasound is recognized as a non-invasive technique that can induce localized BBB opening transiently and repeatedly. This technique has aroused broad attention from researchers worldwide, and numerous articles have been published recently. However, no existing study has systematically examined this field from a scientometric perspective. The aim of this study was to summarize the knowledge structure and identify emerging trends and potential hotspots in this field.Methods: Publications related to ultrasound-induced BBB opening published from 1998 to 2020 were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection. The search strategies were as follows: topic: (“blood brain barrier” OR “BBB”) AND topic: (ultrasound OR ultrason* OR acoustic* OR sonopora*). The document type was set to articles or reviews with language restriction to English. Three different analysis tools including one online platform, VOS viewer1.6.16, and CiteSpace V5.7.R2 software were used to conduct this scientometric study.Results: A total of 1,201 valid records were included in the final analysis. The majority of scientific publication was produced by authors from North America, Eastern Asia, and Western Europe. Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology was the most prominent journal. The USA, China, and Canada were the most productive countries. Hynynen K, and Mcdannold N were key researchers with considerable academic influence. According to analysis of keywords, four main research directions were identified: cluster 1 (microbubbles study), cluster 2 (management of intracranial tumors), cluster 3 (ultrasound parameters and mechanisms study), and cluster 4 (treatment of neurodegenerative diseases). The current research hotspot has shifted from the basic research of ultrasound and microbubbles to management of intracranial tumors and neurodegenerative diseases. Burst detection analysis showed that Parkinson's disease, doxorubicin, gold nanoparticle, glioblastoma, gene therapy, and Alzheimer's disease may continue to be the research frontiers.Conclusion: Ultrasound-induced BBB opening research is in a period of robust development. This study is a starting point, providing a comprehensive overview, development landscape, and future opportunities of this technology, which standout as a useful reference for researchers and decision makers interested in this area.

Abstract:Low-intensity ultrasound (LI-US) is a non-invasive stimulation technique that has emerged in recent years and has been shown to have positive effects on neuromodulation, fracture healing, inflammation improvement, and metabolic regulation. This study reports the conclusions of a bibliometric analysis of LI-US. Input data for the period between 1995 and 2022, including 7209 related articles in the field of LI-US, were collected from the core library of the Web of Science (WOS) database. Using these data, a set of bibliometric indicators was obtained to gain knowledge on different aspects: global production, research areas, and sources analysis, contributions of countries and institutions, author analysis, citation analysis, and keyword analysis. This study combined the data analysis capabilities provided by the WOS database, making use of two bibliometric software tools: R software and VOS viewer to achieve analysis and data exploration visualization, and predicted the further development trends of LI-US. It turns out that the United States and China are co-leaders while Zhang ZG is the most significant author in LI-US. In the future, the hot spots of LI-US will continue to focus on parameter research, mechanism discussion, safety regulations, and neuromodulation applications.

Abstract:High frequency and low intensity, diagnostic ultrasound methods are recognized to be safe in epidemiology and pathology but the bioeffects of these methods on molecular and proteomic levels are unknown. As a representative organism that can directly reflect the molecular response to stresses, Escherichia coli was selected for exposure to ultrasound probes C1-5, M5s and 9 L for 10 min and 20 min. ITRAQ was used to measure the expression of the cellular proteome. The results showed that both the frequency and time of exposure to ultrasound affected the proteome expression. Fifty biological processes were affected and nineteen metabolic processes, including carbohydrate metabolism, asparagine metabolism and phosphate import were differentially regulated. Lower frequency ultrasound caused copper export and iron-sulfur cluster biosynthesis upregulation. Nine proteins (GlpD, AsnB, TdcB, CopA, IscR, IscU, IscS, IscA, RecA) were key for the adaption to ultrasound. Accordingly, the results of the potential risks based on the calculation of the orthologous genome clarified that relevant pathways and potentially sensitive individuals were worthy of further study. These findings offer insights into reveal the bioeffects of ultrasound at the metabolic network and proteomic levels. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This review discusses the various different bioeffects of single ultrasound and ultrasound combined with various physical and chemical factors(such as fadiation, high heat, chemotherapy drugs, light sensitive agents, etc. ) on normal and malignant cells in vivo and in vitro. It also suggests that compared with cell-killing effect of single ultrasound, the combination effects of ultrasound combined with other physical and chemical factors are better because it is safer, more effective, and more targeted. This article will review these studies in order to gather references for further study on ultrasound.
