Abstract:Rational design and construction of electrode materials with advanced nanostructures and composition superiority have been recognized as an effective strategy for enhancing electrochemical performance of supercapacitors (SCs). Herein, we have successfully designed a novel hierarchical (NiCo)Se2/CoFe2Se4 composite material with Co-FePBAs nanocubes anchored on nanorods by sequential hydrothermal reaction, precipitate reaction and selenylation treatment, which have been further served as electrode material for supercapacitors. As a result, the (NiCo)Se2/CoFe2Se4 hybrid electrode exhibits large specific capacity of 197 mAh/g at 3 mA/cm2, remarkable rate property and extraordinary cycle lifetime. Moreover, the assembled (NiCo)Se2/CoFe2Se4//AC device demonstrates a superior energy density of 0.912 mWh/cm2 at 1.93 mW/cm2 with preeminent cycle performance. The experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) proclaim that the synergistic effect of (NiCo)Se2 and CoFe2Se4 can generate more active sites, improve conductivity, as well as encourage the kinetics of the electrochemical reaction, thus achieving excellent electrochemical performance.
Tin Disulphide/nitrogen-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide/polyaniline Ternary Nanocomposites with Ultra-High Capacitance Properties for High Rate Performance Supercapacitor.

Abstract:In this work, tin disulfide/nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide/polyaniline ternary composites are synthesized via in situ polymerization of aniline monomers on the surface of tin disulfide/nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide nanosheets binary composites with different loading of the conducting polymers. The tin disulfide/nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide/polyaniline ternary composites electrode shows much higher specific capacitance, specific energy and specific power values than those of pure polyaniline and tin disulfide/nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide binary composites. The highest specific capacitance, specific energy and specific power values of 1021.67 F g(-1), 69.53 W h kg(-1) and 575.46 W kg(-1) are observed for 60% polyaniline deposited onto tin disulfide/nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide composites at a current density of 1 A g(-1). The above composites also show superior cyclic stability and 78% of the specific capacitance can be maintained after 5000 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles. The good charge-storage properties of tin disulfide/nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide/polyaniline ternary composites is ascribed to the organic-inorganic synergistic effect. This study paves the way to consider tin disulfide/nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide/polyaniline ternary composites as excellent electrode materials for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Transition-metal selenide electrodes have recently attracted increasing interest in supercapacitors resulting from their superior electrochemical performance, lower-cost, and environmental friendliness. Herein, we report a novel bimetallic Ni-Co selenide nanosheet/three-dimensional (3D) graphene/nickel foam binder-free electrode (NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs/3D G/NF) prepared via chemical vapor deposition followed by a simple two-step hydrothermal process in this paper. The NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs array vertically on 3D G/NF with a uniform and stable structure without using any chemical binders. This novel electrode is flexible, highly conductive, and exhibits an excellent specific capacitance of ∼742.4 F g-1 at 1 mA cm-2. Furthermore, with a 10-fold increase to 10 mA cm-2, it still retains 471.78 F g-1 and a high cycling stability of ∼83.8% of the initial retention after 1000 cycles at 10 mA cm-2, demonstrating that NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs/3D G/NF binder-free electrode has potential for energy storage application in high-performance supercapacitor fields.
Controlled Synthesis and Comparison of NiCo2S4/graphene/2D TMD Ternary Nanocomposites for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Novel ternary electrode materials based on graphene, NiCo2S4, and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) were designed and fabricated with the intention of exploiting synergistic effects conducive to supercapacitive energy storage. Compared to NiCo2S4-g-MoSe2, the NiCo2S4-g-MoS2 electrode exhibited higher specific capacitance, enhanced rate capability (1002 F g(-1) even at 5 A g(-1), 6.01 F cm(-2) at a current density of 25 mA cm(-2)) and cycling stability (94.8% retention of its original capacity after cycling 4000 times). The mechanism was proposed and this pioneering work will be helpful in making judicious choices of which 2D materials to be selected for supercapacitor applications in the future.

Abstract:The series of the nonstoichiometry transition metal sulfides (TMSs) composites were fabricated by hydrothermal route. NiCo2S4/Co9S8-3h shows a superior specific capacity (2532.5 F g−1 at 1 A g−1) and 81.9 % capacitance retention at 10 A g−1. Moreover, the assembled NiCo2S4/Co9S8-3h//active carbon (AC) device exhibits a high energy density of 32.9 Wh kg−1 at 750.6 W kg−1 and outstanding capacitance retention of 94.7 % after 10000 cycles.

Abstract:Highlights•Ni/NiO dual-phase modified multiwall carbon nanotubes has been synthesized.•The modified MWCNTs can be used as a novel additive for the supercapacitor.•A ternary composite based on NiO, PANI and m-MWCNT has been prepared.•The obtained ternary nanocomposites exhibited a specific capacitance of 730 F/g.BackgroundAlthough high theoretical capacitance, low cost, and superior cycling reversibility make NiO a promising material for preparing supercapacitors, poor conductivity and ionic transport have limited its applicability.MethodsTo overcome these drawbacks, in this study we prepared ternary composites from porous NiO nanosheets, polyaniline:poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PANI:PSS), and Ni/NiO-decorated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Using a spray-drying technique, the conductive PANI:PSS was bound tightly to the porous NiO nanosheets to form PANI:PSS/NiO (P-NiO) microspheres. Here, the PANI:PSS infiltrated the nanopores of NiO and modified the NiO surface, thereby decreasing the internal resistance and avoiding restacking of the NiO nanosheets. Moreover, we synthesized MWCNTs decorated with Ni/NiO dual-phase nanoparticles; here, the deposition of the Ni/NiO nanoparticles improved both the electrical conductivity and capacitive behavior of the MWCNTs.Significant findingsAs a result, the modified MWCNTs (m-MWCNTs) functioned as a novel additive that lowered the external resistance among the P-NiO microspheres. An asymmetric supercapacitor employing the designed ternary system and active carbon as electrodes achieved a remarkable specific capacitance of 105.6 F/g at 0.5 A/g, a maximum energy density of 33 W h/kg, and superior cycling stability.Graphical abstractDownload : Download high-res image (202KB)Download : Download full-size image

Ni0.96S/NiS/Ni3S2 Coated Three-Dimensional Graphene Composite for High Energy Storage and Capacitance Retention Supercapacitors

Abstract:This research prepares a new Ni0.96S/NiS/Ni3S2 flower-like particles by hydrothermal sulfidation. Fumaric acid is used as a carbon source to synthesize three-dimensional graphene (3DG) to disperse Ni0.96S/NiS/Ni3S2 flower-like particles to obtain Ni0.96S/NiS/Ni3S2/3DG composite material. The Ni0.96S/NiS/Ni3S2/3DG-10 has the best electrochemical performance. The specific capacitance of Ni0.96S/NiS/Ni3S2/3DG-10 is up to 2454.1 F g(-1) at current density of 1 A g(-1). In addition, at two-electrode applications, the energy density of Ni0.96S/NiS/Ni3S2/3DG-10//AC is as high as 51.7 Wh kg(-1). After 8000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g(-1), the capacitance attenuation of Ni-0.96S/NiS/Ni3S2/3DG-10//AC is only 7.8%. The interaction between different phases can increase the storage space of charge. The special flower-like morphology can provide extra large buffer space for volume changes, thus improving the cyclic stability of the material. Furthermore, Appropriate 3DG quality can effectively improve the dispersion of particles, accelerate electrolyte penetration and ion transport, and give full display to the synergy between pseudo-capacitance and double layer capacitance. Therefore, this research provides a new idea for designing a metal sulfide composite carbon material with a controllable structure and applying it to energy storage equipment.
MOF-Derived NiS 2 @Carbon Microspheres Wrapped with Carbon Nanotubes for High Cycle Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Nickel sulfides are seemed as potential electrode materials of supercapacitors (SCs). Unfortunately, the unsatisfied structural stability of nickel sulfides lies in the way of their long-term working and applications. Herein, inspired by the biological structure of chestnuts, a ternary heterostructure composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) linked with NiS 2 @carbon microspheres (xNCC) was constructed by using Ni-MOF as precursor. Electrochemical evaluations showed that the as-obtained xNCC composites presented an optimal specific capacitance of 1572 F/g at 0.5 A/g. Additionally, the aqueous supercapacitor device exhibited a superior energy density of 21.6 Wh/kg, as well as a performance of 94.8 % superior cycling stability after 10000 cycles. It is supposed that the unique ternary heterostructure avoids/relieves the agglomeration of NiS 2 , weakens volume expansion and provides abundant as well as promote the stability of electrochemical active sites. More importantly, the 3D structural features of xNCC impart the electrodes with porous microstructures that are able to shorten the distance of ion-diffusion, thus enhancing the cycling stability and electrochemical performance. The present strategy may enlighten the structural design of electrode materials that can be further applied in SCs and other energy storage devices.

Optimized Spherical Manganese Oxide-Ferroferric Oxide-Tin Oxide Ternary Composites As Advanced Electrode Materials for Supercapacitors.

Abstract:Inexpensive MnO2 is a promising material for supercapacitors (SCs), but its application is limited by poor electrical conductivity and low specific surface area. We design and fabricate hierarchical MnO2-based ternary composite nanostructures showing superior electrochemical performance via doping with electrochemically active Fe3O4 in the interior and electrically conductive SnO2 nanoparticles in the surface layer. Optimization composition results in a MnO2-Fe3O4-SnO2 composite electrode material with 5.9 wt.% Fe3O4 and 5.3 wt.% SnO2, leading to a high specific areal capacitance of 1.12 F cm(-2) at a scan rate of 5 mV s(-1). This is two to three times the values for MnO2-based binary nanostructures at the same scan rate. The low amount of SnO2 almost doubles the capacitance of porous MnO2-Fe3O4 (before SnO2 addition), which is attributed to an improved conductivity and remaining porosity. In addition, the optimal ternary composite has a good rate capability and an excellent cycling performance with stable capacitance retention of ~90% after 5000 charge/discharge cycles at 7.5 mA cm(-2). All-solid-state SCs are assembled with such electrodes using polyvinyl alcohol/Na2SO4 electrolyte. An integrated device made by connecting two identical SCs in series can power a light-emitting diode indicator for more than 10 min.
Electrospun mesoporous Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 – CNT – hollow carbon ternary composite nanofibers as high performance electrodes for advanced symmetric supercapacitors

Abstract:Despite being potential electrode materials for supercapacitors, Spinel ferrites suffer from poor electronic conductivity and low specific capacity. We have addressed this limitation by synthesizing composite hollow carbon nanofibers (HCNF) embedded with nanostructured Nickel Zinc Ferrite (NZF) and Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT), through coaxial electrospinning. These ternary composite nanofibers NZF‐CNT‐HCNF have a high specific capacity of 833 C g‐1 at a current density of 1 A g‐1 and have a capacity retention of 90% after 3000 cycles. This is much better than that of pure NZF fibers (180 C g‐1) or hollow carbon nanofibers (96 C g‐1), suggesting synergy between various constituents of the composite. A symmetric supercapacitor fabricated from NZF‐CNT‐HCNF composite nanofibers (30% NZF) has a high specific capacity of 302 C g‐1 (302 A g‐1) at a current density of 1 A g‐1 and has a capacity retention of 95% after 5000 cycles. At the same current density, the device has a high energy density of 39 Whkg‐1 and power density of 1000 Wkg‐1 at a current density of 1 A g‐1. This performance can be attributed to high specific surface area (776 m2 g‐1), mesoporosity (pore size ~ 4 nm) and high electrical conductivity of CNTs..

Abstract:Potassium citrate has been reported to fabricate carbon nanosheets (CNS) through high-temperature calcinations. To integrate electrical double-layer capacitive CNS with high-pseudocapacitive metal oxides, a novel CNS/MnO2/NiCo2O4 ternary composite is developed by growing NiCo2O4 nanoneedles on porous CNS/MnO2 nanosheets arrays, in which, the CNS/MnO2 template was prepared by the redox reaction between CNS and KMnO4. Through optimizing the dosage of CNS/MnO2 template, the CNS/MnO2/NiCo2O4–0.1 composite prepared with 0.1 g CNS/MnO2 presents the highest capacitance of 1254 F g−1, and the capacitance retains 81.9% after cycled for 5000 cycles. The asymmetric supercapacitor device consisted of CNS/MnO2/NiCo2O4–0.1 positive electrode and CNS/CNTs negative electrode delivers a capacitance of 161 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1. The energy density reaches the maximum value of 22.2 Wh kg−1 at 727.9 W kg−1. The superior performance of the proposed ternary composite can be ascribed to the high conductivity of CNS and the improved ion/charge transfer by porous MnO2 nanosheets arrays. Furthermore, the combination of NiCo2O4 nanoneedles with MnO2 nanosheets contributes to much more pseudocapacitance by playing a synergistic effect.

Ti₃SiC₂/Carbon Nanofibers Fabricated by Electrospinning as Electrode Material for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:As an Mn+1AXn phase ternary layered carbide, Ti₃SiC₂ possesses the advantages of both excellent stability and high electrical conductivity, which are considered to be promising electrode materials for supercapacitors. Ti₃SiC₂/Carbon nanofiber composites with one-dimensional nanostructures were successfully synthesized via electrospinning. Systematic electrochemical tests showed that the Ti₃SiC₂/Carbon composite possesses a large specific capacitance of 133.1 F/g at the current density of 1 A/g, high rate capability of 113.7% capacitance retention from 1 to 10 A/g, and low resistance of 1.07 Ω. After assembling the asymmetrical supercapacitor, Ti₃SiC₂/Carbon provides the energy density of 7.02 Wh/kg at the power density of 140 W/kg. In addition, Ti₃SiC₂/Carbon composite is highly stable, with 74.6% capacity retention after 4000 cycles. Ti₃SiC₂/Carbon's superior electrochemical properties are ascribed to the 1D nanowire structure and the high specific surface area. Ti₃SiC₂/Carbon is a prospective electrode material for future supercapacitors.
Hierarchical architecture of Ti3C2@PDA/NiCo2S4 composite electrode as high-performance supercapacitors

Abstract:A novel Ti3C2@PDA/NiCo2S4 composites as high performance supercapacitor electrodes were synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment process. The chemical modification and uniformly coating of Ti3C2 surface by polydopamine (PDA) can prevent the structural collapse and over-oxidation of Ti3C2 during the hydrothermal synthesis of NiCo2S4. Furthermore, the confined-synthesis of smaller NiCo2S4 particles between the Ti3C2 layers, not only prevent the restacking of Ti3C2 that between the adjacent monolayers during cycling, but also afford high surface areas accessible to charge transfer and ion diffusion. Thereby, enhance the electrochemical cycling stability of the Ti3C2@PDA/NiCo2S4 composite. It is significant to explore how NiCo2S4 alters the microstructure, morphology as well as supercapacitors performance of Ti3C2 to tune the microstructure and performance of Ti3C2 by appropriate hydrothermal synthesis strategy. The experimental results exhibit a prominent improvement in the supercapacitor performance, the gravimetric capacitance of Ti3C2@PDA/NiCo2S4 composites achieve as high as 495 F g-1 at 2 mV s-1, which increase the 10 times as compared to the pristine Ti3C2. Furthermore, the cycling stability of the Ti3C2@PDA/NiCo2S4 composites electrode was enhanced significantly by the hierarchical architecture, and showed exceptional capacitance retention (81.16%) even after 3000 cycles. The dramatic improvement in the supercapacitors performance of Ti3C2@PDA/NiCo2S4 electrodes is attributed to impressive conductive matrix Ti3C2, the effective modification of small size Ni2Co2S4, and the strong interfacial interaction between Ti3C2@PDA and NiCo2S4. This study demonstrating its attractive application prospect of Ti3C2 Mxenes modified with bimetallic sulfide as electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfide has been regarded as an ideal electrode material for supercapacitors due to its high energy density. However, the poor cyclic stability caused by low electroconductivity seriously limits its practical application. Herein, carbon nanotubes and nickel–cobalt bimetallic organic framework composites were prepared by the in situ growth method and used as precursors to prepare carbon nanotubes/nickel–cobalt bimetallic sulfide (CNTs/Ni–Co–S-3) composites. Benefits from the synergy between the components, CNTs/Ni–Co–S-3, as a positive electrode material, presented an extremely high specific capacity of 734 C g–1 at 1 A g–1 and an improved rate capability. Furthermore, when CNTs/Ni–Co–S served as the positive electrode of the hybrid supercapacitor (CNTs/Ni–Co–S-3//AC HSC), the device provided a competitive energy density of 42.15 Wh kg–1 at the power density of 852 W kg–1 and long-term stability (88.46% of specific capacitance retention for 10000 cycles at 8 A g–1). This synthesis strategy provides a new pathway for further improving the energy density and cyclic stability of metallic sulfide group composite electrodes.

Abstract:The metal–organic framework (MOF) materials with significant steadiness and a large specific surface area have been popular with supercapacitor material in recent years. However, its application in supercapacitors is restricted due to the low specific capacitance and poor conductivity. Herein, sulfur compounds with a high theoretical specific capacitance and highly conductive titanium nitride (TiN) were introduced into Co-based metal–organic frameworks/nickel foam (Co-MOF/NF) through a two-step hydrothermal technique (nickel sulfide/titanium nitride@ Co-based metal–organic frameworks/nickel foam). In detail, the fabricated nickel sulfide/titanium nitride@Co-based metal–organic frameworks/nickel foam (Ni3S2/TiN@Co-MOF/NF) electrode material exhibits a markedly high specific capacitance (2648.8 F g−1) at 1 A g−1, compared with that (770 F g−1) of the precursor Co-MOF/NF. And its mass specific capacitance is retained 88.3% (8 A g−1) after 5000 cycles. Furthermore, a non-symmetrical supercapacitor (ASC) composed of Ni3S2/TiN@Co-MOF/NF and AC exhibits excellent power density (801.8 W kg−1) and energy density (97.8 W h kg−1). Therefore, Ni3S2/TiN@Co-MOF/NF with excellent electrochemical properties and stability provides new ideas for the development of excellent supercapacitor electrode materials.

Abstract:Corn cob-like Fe3O4@Ni3S2 nanocomposites was synthesized through a facile two-step hydrothermal process. The precursor was obtained by a facile calcination of a Fe-MOF template, then, nickel sulfide coated on iron oxide composites were synthesized using a hydrothermal method. In addition, the fabricated Fe3O4@Ni3S2 electrode revealed a great electrical performances with a maximum specific capacitance of 1200[Formula: see text]F[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text] at 1[Formula: see text]A[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text], a capacitance retention of 83% could be observed after 1000 cycles at a great charge–discharge current density of 5[Formula: see text]A[Formula: see text]g[Formula: see text]. We believed that the excellent performance might be ascribed to the synergistic effect between the Fe3O4and Ni3S2. Thus, the results demonstrate the corn cob-like Fe3O4@Ni3S2 composite is prominent candidate in the field of supercapacitor applications.

MnCo2O4/Ni3S4 Nanocomposite for Hybrid Supercapacitor with Superior Energy Density and Long-Term Cycling Stability

Abstract:MnCo2O4 is regarded as a good electrode material for supercapacitor due to its high specific capacity and good structural stability. However, its poor electrical conductivity limits its wide-range applications. To solve this issue, we integrated the MnCo2O4 with Ni3S4, which has a good electrical conductivity, and synthesized a MnCo2O4/Ni3S4 nanocomposite using a two-step hydrothermal process. Comparing with individual MnCo2O4 and Ni3S4, the MnCo2O4/Ni3S4 nanocomposite showed a higher specific capacity and a better cycling stability as the electrode for the supercapacitor. The specific capacity value of the MnCo2O4/Ni3S4 electrode was 904.7 C g-1 at 1 A g-1 with a potential window of 0-0.55 V. A hybrid supercapacitor (HSC), assembled using MnCo2O4/Ni3S4 and active carbon as the cathode and anode, respectively, showed a capacitance of 116.4 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, and a high energy density of 50.7 Wh kg-1 at 405.8 W kg-1. Long-term electrochemical stability tests showed an obvious increase of the HSC's capacitance after 5500 charge/discharge cycles, reached a maximum value of 162.7% of its initial value after 25,000 cycles, and then remained a stable value up to 64,000 cycles. Rational Synthesis of Porous CuO/Cu2O/NiCo2O4 3D Composites for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Bimetallic oxide NiCo2O4 and its composites hold promising applications for supercapacitors owing to their theoretical capacity, inexpensiveness, and ease of synthesis. In this work, novel CuO/Cu2O/NiCo2O4 (CCNC) open-structured three-dimensional (3D) composites were synthesized. The multiple components and open structure of the composite provide many open channels for ion diffusion, thus, promoting good rate performance during the electrochemical reaction. The optimized sample (CCNC3–6) shows good electrochemical performance, with a high specific capacitance of 1614 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1, and good rate performance by maintaining a capacitance of 1383 F g−1 for increasing current density to 20 A g−1 (with a merely 14% capacitance loss, as compared with that at 1 A g−1). The composite also shows enhanced cycle stability than pure NiCo2O4, with 81% remaining capacitance after 3000 cycles. The CCNC 3D nanocomposites are demonstrated to be promising for high-performance supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:Balancing electrochemical activity and structural reversibility of fibrous electrodes with accelerated Faradaic charge transfer kinetics and pseudocapacitive storage are highly crucial for fiber-shaped supercapacitors (FSCs). Herein, we report novel core-shell hierarchical fibers for high-performance FSCs, in which the ordered NiCoMoS nanosheets arrays are chemically anchored on Ti3C2Tx fiber. Beneficial from architecting stable polymetallic sulfide arrays and conductive networks, the NiCoMoS-Ti3C2Tx fiber maintains fast charge transfer, low diffusion and OH- adsorption barrier, and stabilized multi-electronic reaction kinetics of polymetallic sulfide. Consequently, the NiCoMoS-Ti3C2Tx fiber exhibits a large volumetric capacitance (2472.3 F cm-3) and reversible cycling performance (20,000 cycles). In addition, the solid-state symmetric FSCs deliver a high energy density of 50.6 mWh cm-3 and bending stability, which can significantly power electronic devices and offer sensitive detection for dopamine.
