Abstract:Pyrolysis of tobacco waste (TW) can provide an effective management option as it decomposes the main toxic compound nicotine to benign volatiles. In this study, the thermal decomposition characteristics of TW samples were investigated using power compensating type differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG-DTG) at different heating rate (5, 10, 15 and 20 degrees C/min). This work reveals four stage pyrolysis mechanism of TW, the first being dehydration (<150 degrees C), the second at a temperature range of torrefaction (150-250 degrees C), the third at the pyrolysis temperature range (250-350 degrees C) and the fourth stage at the temperature range of graphitisation (>350 degrees C). Kinetic parameters in terms of activation energy and pre-exponential factor were determined by using Friedman and Doyle methods. The results indicated increasing heating rate tended to delay thermal degradation processed towards higher temperatures. As the heating rates increased, average devolatilization rates were observed to increase.
