Abstract:We report radical coupling copolymerization (RCCP) of various pairs of in-situ formed benzyl-type biradicals derived from dibromides in the presence of Cu/ligand. The monomer sequence distributions and compositions of copolymers were measured by 1H NMR. RCCP can be employed to synthesize some new kinds of polymers, such as polyether, polysulfone and poly(substituted arylene), under mild condition and within a short time. Copolymers with higher molecular weights than the corresponding homopolymers prepared by radical coupling polymerization can be obtained by some pairs of monomers.

Abstract:Periodic polymers with different repeating sequences, such as [AX], [AAX] and [ABAX], were synthesized by radical addition-coupling polymerization (RACP) of bifunctional monomers with benzyl bromide/α-methyl benzyl bromide groups and 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane in the presence of Cu(0)/ligand. By selection of proper ligand and polymerization condition, the defects derived from self-coupling of benzyl-type radicals were eliminated, which results in strict control on the repeating sequence.

Abstract:ABSTRACTWe present an efficient method for synthesis of block copolymer by radical addition cross‐coupling reaction between two different polymeric radicals and different double bonds. Two different monobromo polymers (P1‐Br and P2‐Br) were reacted with Cu(0)/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine in the presence of ethyl dithiobenzoate or 1,1‐diphenylethylene (X) and the block copolymer (P1‐X‐P2) can be obtained with high efficiency, which cannot be prepared by normal atom transfer radical coupling of mixture of P1‐Br and P2‐Br. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Stereospecific polymers were constructed by the successive formation of a trans-C-C bond using bis (benzylic gem-dibromide)s as monomers treated with Cu/polyamine under mild conditions. The structure of the polymer was characterized by GPC, NMR, UV-vis and MALDI-TOF-MS. The formation of a trans-CvC bond was established by a series of control reactions. Evidence demonstrates that the CvC bond is generated by two domino reactions, one is the intermolecular reductive coupling reaction from gem-dibromide to vicinal dibromide and the other is the intramolecular debromination of vicinal dibromide, and therefore, the formation of a trans-C-C bond. The successive formation of the trans-C = C bond leads to the growth of a polymer chain following a step-growth polymerization mechanism.

Abstract:The mode that bonding metal catalyst and radical species to carbon-metal greatly enriches the diversities of radical cross coupling, while noncovalent interaction between carbon-centered radical and metal catalyst is seldom revealed, especially in the discrimination of highly similar/identical radical species. Here, we demonstrate an unprecedented cobalt-tuned π-π stacking paradigm with benzyl radical for selective C(sp3)-C(sp3) radical coupling by employing abundant methylarenes and redox-active alkyl esters as benzyl sp3 carbon radical source under noble metal-free photochemical conditions. This robust protocol enables the quickly selective bonding of structurally similar benzyl radicals for the production of secondary-quaternary, tertiary-quaternary, quaternary-quaternary, secondary-tertiary and tertiary-tertiary alkyl scaffolds for constructing high value pharmaceutical building blocks. Detailed mechanistic studies indicate that the easy-available tridentate N ligand terpyridine render the success of π-π stacking mechanism for overcoming the innate challenge of radical Csp3–Csp3 coupling.

Abstract:Ethynylene-bridged polymers are currently synthesized by alkyne metathesis polymerization or Pd-catalyzed coupling between diethynylarene and dihaloarene. We report the formation of C≡C linkages in reductive coupling polymerization of bis(benzylic gem-tribromide)s promoted by Cu/polyamine under mild conditions. The polymer backbone was constructed through cascade formation of (Br)C═C(Br) bonds and C≡C bonds. This protocol provides a new method for synthesis of ethynylene-bridged polymers using monomers without alkynyl groups.

Abstract:A hydrophilic polymer possessing a [AB(x)AC](n) (A = ester, B = ethylene oxide, C = N-O) repeating sequence was synthesized by an aqueous radical addition-coupling polymerization using water-soluble dibromide and a nitroso compound in the presence of a CuBr/ligand. This opens up a new pathway to synthesize water-soluble periodic polymers with a regular sequence.

Abstract:In this study, a novel application of radical addition-coupling polymerization (RACP) for synthesis of hyperbranched polymers is reported. By Cu/PMDETA-mediated RACP of 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane with trimethylolpropane tris(2-bromopropionate) or a bromo-ended 3-arm PS macromonomer, two types of hyperbranched polymers with high degree of polymerization are synthesized under mild conditions, respectively. The chemical structures of the hyperbranched polymers are carefully characterized. By selective degradations of the ester groups and weak bonds of NOC in the polymers, high degree of alternative connection of the two monomers in the synthesized polymers have been identified. Based on the experimental results, mechanism of formation of the hyperbranched polymer is proposed, which includes formation of carbon radicals from the tribromo monomer through single electron transfer, its capture by 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane that results in nitroxide radical, and cross-coupling reaction of the nitroxide radical with other carbon radicals. Abstract:The development of various polymerization mechanisms has paved the way for the construction of well-defined polymers with complicated structures. However, a single polymerization mechanism or a simple combination of several mechanisms often cannot meet the requirements. Thus, some efficient coupling reactions would play an important role in polymer science. In this review, we focused on the application of radical coupling in the construction of topological polymers. The atom transfer radical coupling (ATRC) reaction and agent (such as styrene, nitrone or diene) assisted radical coupling proceeded in a homocoupling style and polymers with symmetrical structures were obtained. As a more versatile method, nitroxide radical coupling (NRC) was also discussed, which proceeded in a heterocoupling style and polymers with various asymmetrical structures could be designed. Finally, the prospects of radical based coupling reactions in polymer science were also suggested.

Abstract:In contrast with abundant methods for the asymmetric functionalization of alkyl radicals to generate stereogenic centres at reaction sites, catalytic enantioselective desymmetrizing functionalization of alkyl radicals for forging multiple stereocentres—including positions that are remote from the reaction sites—with both high enantio- and diastereoselectivity remains largely unexplored. The major challenge for such reactions is the high reactivity of open-shell alkyl radicals. Here, we describe a strategy to address this challenge: the use of Cu( ii ) phosphate to immediately associate with the in situ-generated reactive alkyl radical species, creating a compact and confined chiral microenvironment for effective stereocontrol. With this strategy, we have developed a general and efficient catalytic enantioselective desymmetrizing functionalization of alkene-tethered 1,3-diols. It provides various tetrahydrofurans and analogues bearing multiple stereocentres with remarkably high levels of enantio- and diastereocontrol. Density functional theory calculations and mechanistic experiments revealed a reaction mechanism involving an enantiodetermining outer-sphere C–O bond formation step.

Abstract:Reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of a conventional radical initiator (benzoylperoxide, BPO) in bulk was successfully implemented via a new polymerization procedure. The system first reacts at 70 degrees C for ten hours, then polymerizes at 110 degrees C, which results in a well-controlled radical polymerization with high initiation efficiency and narrow molecular weight distribution of the resulting polymer, i.e., the polydispersity is as low as M-w/M-n = 1.32. The initiation mechanism of BPO is different from that of AIBN because there is redox reaction between BPO and Cu-I generated from the reaction of radicals with Cu-II. The initiation mechanism of BPO/(CuCl2)-Cl-II/bpy is deduced through the experimental data. The molecular weight of the resultant polymer is in agreement with the theoretical value calculated in accordance with the aforementioned mechanism.

Abstract:Controlled radical polymerization (CRP) has emerged as a spotlight of polymer chemistry in both academic and industrial fields. CRP relies on a reversible dissociation and combination of the carbon-heteroatom bond to construct an activation-deactivation equilibrium, carrying out a linear increase of Mn with the conversion. Heteroatoms serve as polymer chain ends after the CRP process, and they reinitiate polymerization to form block polymers and other topological architectures. However, heteroatom chain ends also undermine the stability of polymers under some extreme external conditions, such as heating and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Herein, we develop a radical strategy for removing heteroatom chain ends by stoichiometric N-heterocyclic carbene borane (NHC-BH3). NHC-BH3 abstracts a heteroatom and concurrently supplies a hydrogen atom without additional catalysts and hydrogen sources. This strategy is applied for polymers synthesized from various CRP approaches (including atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT), nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP), and iodine transfer polymerization (ITP)) with a scalable ability (>15 g) in both organic and aqueous conditions. After chain-end removal, the polymers show improved thermal and UV stability.

Abstract:This work demonstrates a new halogenation reaction through sequential radical and halogen transfer reactions, named as "radical and atom transfer halogenation" (RATH). Both benzoxazine compounds and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) have been demonstrated as active species for RATH. Consequently, the halogenated compound becomes an active initiator of atom transfer radical polymerization. Combination of RATH and sequential ATRP provides an convenient and effective approach to prepare reactive and crosslinkable polymers. The RATH reaction opens a new window both to chemical synthesis and molecular design and preparation of polymeric materials.

Abstract:The selective coupling of two different radicals is a long-standing challenge due to the process occurring statistically. Generally, the cross-coupling selectivity is achieved by the persistent radical effect (PRE), resulting in limited radical precursors. In this paper, a highly selective cross-coupling of alkyl radicals with acyl radicals to construct C(sp2)-C(sp3) bonds, or with alkyl radicals to construct C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds have been achieved with the readily available carboxylic acids and their derivatives (NHPI ester) as coupling partners. The success originates from the use of tridentate ligand (L1) to enable radical cross-coupling process to Ni-mediated organometallic mechanism. This protocol offers a facile and flexible access to structurally diverse ketones (up to 90% yield), and also a new solution for the challenging double decarboxylative C(sp3)-C(sp3) coupling. The broad utility and functional group tolerance are further illustrated by the late-stage functionalization of natural-occurring carboxylic acids and drugs.

Abstract:Metalloradical catalysis (MRC), predominantly exemplified by metalloporphyrin complexes, has emerged as a promising strategy for regulating radical reactions and broadening their synthetic applications. In this paper, we report that cobaloxime complexes, functioning as a surrogate for metalloporphyrin systems, can mediate radical cyclopropanation of olefins using donor/acceptor‐type carbene precursor α‐aryl diazoacetates through the MRC process. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions, yielding cyclopropane derivatives in good yields with high diastereoselectivity. The reaction exhibits extensive substrate tolerance, encompassing gram‐scale transformations and the synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds. Our discoveries underscore the potential of cobaloxime‐catalyzed cyclopropanation as a valuable asset in organic syntheses and further expand the repertoire of metalloradical systems in catalysis.

Abstract:Stable carbon-based polyradicals exhibiting strong spin-spin coupling and slow depolarization processes are particularly attractive functional materials. A new molecular motif synthesized by a convenient method that allows the integration of stable, high-spin radicals to (hetero)aromatic polycycles has been developed, as illustrated by a non-Kekule diradical showing a triplet ground state with long persistency (tau 1/2 approximate to 31 h) in air. Compared to the widely used 1,3-phenylene, the newly designed (diaza)pyrene-4,10-diyl moiety is for the first time demonstrated to confer ferromagnetic (FM) spin coupling, allowing delocalized non-disjoint SOMOs. With the X-ray crystallography unambiguously proving the diradical structure, the triplet ground state was thoroughly characterized. A large Delta ES-T of 1.1 kcal/mol, proving the strong FM coupling effect, was revealed consistently by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements and variable-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, while the zero-field splitting and triplet nutation characters were examined by continuous-wave and pulsed EPR spectroscopy. A millisecond spin-lattice relaxation time was also detected. The current study not only offers a new molecular motif enabling FM coupling between carbon-based spins, but more importantly presents a general method for installing stable polyradicals into functional pi-systems. A general method has been developed for installing stable polyradicals into polycyclic pi-systems, as illustrated by the formation of an air-stable, high-spin carbon-based diradical with a new ferromagnetic coupling motif of diazapyrene. The structure of the diradical was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, while the magnetic measurements provided unambiguous evidence for the high-spin ground state and a long spin relaxation process.+image
