Abstract:Hierarchical N-doped porous carbon has been prepared by assembling N-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) onto a carbonized metal-organic framework (cMOF-5) and used as an electrode material for supercapacitors. In this hierarchical composite structure, cMOF-5 provides an effective cubic porous framework with a large specific surface area and good electrical conductivity, while N-GQDs play an important role in enhancing the pseudocapacitive activity and improving the surface wettability of the electrode. Therefore, the N-GQD/cMOF-5 composite electrode material exhibits an outstanding specific capacitance of 780 F g(-1) at 10 mV s(-1) in a three-electrode system. Moreover, the composite electrode assembled in symmetric supercapacitors also displays a high specific capacitance of 294.1 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), excellent rate capacity and remarkable cycling stability with 94.1% of the initial capacitance retained after 5000 cycles at 5 A g(-1). When used as the positive electrode, the N-GQD/cMOF-5//AC asymmetric supercapacitor exhibits an energy density of 14.4 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 400.6 W kg(-1), while the capacitance retention after 5000 cycles reaches 90.1%. The current N-GQD/cMOF-5 composite electrode paves a feasible avenue to improve the capacitive performances of supercapacitors by constructing heteroatom-doped, hierarchically porous carbon architectures.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs)/graphene composites are interesting as promising electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors because they can well integrate the complementary features of QDs and graphene. Herein, we demonstrate a MnFe2O4 QDs/nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) material prepared by a controllable solvothermal synthesis, in which ultra-small MnFe2O4 QDs are uniformly anchored on NG surfaces. First-principles calculations elucidate that the oxygen-containing groups of graphene oxide play a crucial role in generating such a structure, and a ferrite octahedral skeleton is firstly formed followed by Mn atom insertion. Powdery MnFe2O4 QDs/NG exhibits a high specific capacitance of 517 F g(-2) within a negative potential window (-1 approximate to 0 V) in KOH electrolyte. When the lower cut off voltage is extended to -1.2 V, the specific capacitance can be increased to 905 F g(-1). And the condensed MnFe2O4 QDs@NG electrode (forming a similar structure to pitaya slices) with an astonishing loading mass of 18 mg cm(-2) can achieve high areal and volumetric capacitances (5.3 F cm(-2) and 277.6 F cm(-3)). Moreover, carbon encapsulation is favorable for the improvement of rate and cycling performance, allowing a satisfactory capacitance of 150 F g(-1) even at 200 A g(-1) as well as a superior lifetime up to 65000 cycles. These results make such materials competitive with supercapacitor electrodes and may speed up the development of QD-based electrodes for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped graphene is of great interest for energy storage applications due to its improved local electronic structures compared with undoped graphene. However, a tunable method for the preparation of heteroatom-doped graphene with a special microstructure is still worth developing. Herein, a novel nitrogen-doped graphene with different microstructures is facilely synthesized via an in situ interlamination self-assembling method that employs the in situ formed Fe3(PO4)2 and organoamine as the catalyst and carbon source, respectively. By tuning the alkyl chain length in organoamine, octylamine and dodecylamine, bubble-like and sheet-like nitrogen-doped graphene are obtained, respectively. In three-electrode supercapacitor tests, besides the double-layer capacitance, the as-prepared graphene electrode material indeed exhibits pseudocapacitance due to the N-rich feature, delivering a good rate capability (166 F g–1 at 20 A g–1) and cyclic performance (96% capacitance retention over 20,000 cycles at 20 A g–1). More importantly, the symmetrical supercapacitor studies reveal the promising practicality due to the achieved excellent energy and power densities together with long-term cyclability. Thereby, this work establishes a new milestone for the facile synthesis of heteroatom-doped graphene with a desired microstructure for energy storage and other applications.

Abstract:An N-superdoped 3D graphene network structure with an N-doping level up to 15.8 at% for high-performance supercapacitor is designed and synthesized, in which the graphene foam with high conductivity acts as skeleton and nested with N-superdoped reduced graphene oxide arogels. This material shows a highly conductive interconnected 3D porous structure (3.33 S cm(-1)), large surface area (583 m(2) g(-1)), low internal resistance (0.4 Omega ), good wettability, and a great number of active sites. Because of the multiple synergistic effects of these features, the supercapacitors based on this material show a remarkably excellent electrochemical behavior with a high specific capacitance (of up to 380, 332, and 245 F g(-1) in alkaline, acidic, and neutral electrolytes measured in three-electrode configuration, respectively, 297 F g(-1) in alkaline electrolytes measured in two-electrode configuration), good rate capability, excellent cycling stability (93.5% retention after 4600 cycles), and low internal resistance (0.4 Omega), resulting in high power density with proper high energy density.
High Density of Free-Standing Holey Graphene/PPy Films for Superior Volumetric Capacitance of Supercapacitors

Abstract:The volumetric performance is a vitally important metric for portable electronic and wearable devices with limited space. However, it is contradictory for the most supercapacitors in the connection between the volumetric and gravimetric capacitances. Herein, we report a simple strategy to prepare a free-standing and binder-free holey graphene/PPy film that possesses a dense microstructure but still high gravimetric capacitances. The holey graphene/PPy film own high-efficiency ion transport channels and big ion-accessible surface area to achieve high-powered supercapacitor electrodes, which have a superior volumetric capacitance (416 F cm-3) and high gravimetric capacitance (438 F g-1) at 1.0 A g-1 in 6 M KOH electrolyte. Meanwhile, it possesses high rate capability and good cycling performance (82.4% capacitance retention even after 2000 cycles). Furthermore, the volumetric energy density of assembled holey graphene/PPy film symmetric supercapacitor can show high as 22.3 Wh L-1. Such densely packed free-standing holey graphene/PPy film is a very significant electrode material for compact and miniaturized energy storage equipment in the further.

Abstract:One great challenge for supercapacitor is to achieve high energy capacity and fast charge/discharge rates simultaneously. Porous graphene with large surface area is a promising candidate for electrode materials of supercapacitor. Using first-principles calculations and non-equilibrium Green's function technique, we have explored the formation energies, mechanical properties, diffusion behaviors and electrical conductance of graphene sheets with various hole defects and/or nitrogen doping. Interestingly, graphene sheets with pyridinic-like holes (especially hexagonal holes) can be more easily doped with nitrogen and still retain the excellent mechanical properties of pristine graphene that is beneficial for the long cycle life. Porous graphene electrode with moderate hole diameter of 4.2-10 Å facilitates efficient access of electrolyte and exhibit excellent rate capability. In addition, doping with nitrogen as electron donors or proton attractors leads to charge accumulation and generates higher pseudocapacitance. Transmission coefficients of N-doped graphene sheets with pyridinic-like holes are only moderately reduced with regard to that of pristine graphene and are insensitive to the detailed geometry parameters. Overall, N-doped graphene with pyridinic-like holes exhibits exciting potentials for high performance energy storage in supercapacitor devices.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous holey graphene/PANI/graphene nanohybrid is fabricated by adopting a facile two-step process in which PANI/graphene hybrid was first synthesized hydrothermally and then wrapped with a layer of holey graphene. The resulted sandwich-like structure cannot only promote electronic transmission and ionic diffusion, but also contribute to a prominent rate capability. A symmetric supercapacitor was assembled with the obtained holey graphene/PANI/graphene nanohybrid, exhibiting a maximum specific capacitance of 437 F·g–1 at 1 A·g–1, an energy density of 55 Wh·kg–1 at 900 W·kg–1, an ultrahigh-rate performance (retained 43% capacitance at 100 A·g–1), as well as a long-term life (84% retention after 5000 loops at 10 A·g–1). The present work may provide an insight for designing high-performance symmetric supercapacitor.

Facile Synthesis and High Volumetric Capacitance of Holey Graphene Film for Supercapacitor Electrodes with Optimizing Preparation Conditions

Abstract:For miniaturized portable energy storage devices with limited space, electrode materials are needed to be developed in the direction of reducing the occupied volume without compromising high specific capacitance and stable cycling ability. Herein, a facile strategy was developed to fabricate a free-standing binder-free holey graphene film as a supercapacitor electrode. In this material mechanism, holey structure in graphene sheets provides abundant ion transport channels and accelerates ion diffusion efficiency, which could guarantee that this film performs a high packing density without compromising electrochemical performance. After being properly optimized on the amount of H2O2 added and the mechanical pressure while preparing, this electrode film could consequently perform a high volumetric capacitance of 406 F cm(-3) and excellent cycle stability with a packing density of 1.34 g cm(-3). Therefore, this kind of densely packed electrode film with excellent electrochemical performance is of great significance for the development of miniaturized portable energy storage devices.

Abstract:For commercial applications, the need for smaller footprint energy storage devices requires more energy to be stored per unit area. Carbon nanomaterials, especially graphene, have been studied as supercapacitor electrodes and can achieve high gravimetric capacities affording high gravimetric energy densities. However, most nanocarbon-based electrodes exhibit a significant decrease in their areal capacitances when scaled to the high mass loadings typically used in commercially available cells (∼10 mg/cm2). One of the reasons for this behavior is that the additional surface area in thick electrodes is not readily accessible by electrolyte ions due to the large tortuosity. Furthermore, the fabrication of such electrodes often involves complicated processes that limit the potential for mass production. Here, holey graphene electrodes for supercapacitors that are scalable in both production and areal capacitance are presented. The lateral surface porosity on the graphene sheets was created using a facile single-step air oxidation method, and the resultant holey graphene was compacted under ambient conditions into mechanically robust monolithic shapes that can be directly used as binder-free electrodes. In comparison, pristine graphene discs under similar binder-free compression molding conditions were extremely brittle and thus not deemed useful for electrode applications. The coin cell supercapacitors, based on these holey graphene electrodes exhibited small variations in gravimetric capacitance over a wide range of areal mass loadings (∼1-30 mg/cm2) at current densities as high as 30 mA/cm2, resulting in the near-linear increase of the areal capacitance (F/cm2) with the mass loading. The prospects of the presented method for facile binder-free ultrathick graphene electrode fabrication are discussed.
Fabrication of high performance structural N-doped hierarchical porous carbon for supercapacitors

Abstract:In this paper, a method to fabricate structural N-doped hierarchical porous carbon is proposed. KOH and melamine are found to have synergistically impact on the pore-creating and nitrogen-doping process. The targeted product possesses specific surface area of 2642 m2 g−1 with a highly promoted inner surface area. The specific capacitance increases from 364 to 715 F g−1 at the current density of 1 A g−1 in a two-electrode system using 6 M KOH electrolyte. It also shows the good rate capability (526 F g−1 at 100 A g−1) and cycle performance (98.28% retention after 5000 cycles at 5 A g−1). The energy density reaches 118 W h kg−1 at the power density of 200 W kg−1. The high specific capacitance is mostly derived from the electrical double-layer capacitance, which is a significant advantage compared to the conventional surface doping. The nitrogen atoms stably embedded into the carbon skeleton. N-5 hindered the energy storage process, while N-Q showed obvious impact both on the specific capacitance and cycle performance. All in all, a high-performance electrode material for supercapacitor is provided in this study and it also provides a brand-new idea for the structural doping porous carbon.

Abstract:Graphene has attracted a lot of attention for ultracapacitor electrodes because of its high electrical conductivity, high surface area, and superb chemical stability. However, poor volumetric capacitive performance of typical graphene-based electrodes has hindered their practical applications because of the extremely low density. Herein we report a scalable synthesis method of holey graphene (h-Graphene) in a single step without using any catalysts or special chemicals. The film made of the as-synthesized h-Graphene exhibited relatively strong mechanical strength, 2D hole morphology, high density, and facile processability. This scalable one-step synthesis method for h-Graphene is time-efficient, cost-efficient, environmentally friendly, and generally applicable to other two-dimensional materials. The ultracapacitor electrodes based on the h-Graphene show a remarkably improved volumetric capacitance with about 700% increase compared to that of regular graphene electrodes. Modeling on individual h-Graphene was carried out to understand the excellent processability and improved ultracapacitor performance.

Abstract:3D few-layer graphene-like carbon with hierarchical open porous architecture is obtained by a new in situ Cu template method, leading to top-level super-capacitive performance, especially state-of-the-art power density. An effective new approach is demonstrated, which can extend the understanding of structure-performance relationships for many electrochemical energy-storage systems and form a significant complement to classical electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
Porous 3D Graphene Aerogel Co-Doped with Nitrogen and Sulfur for High-Performance Supercapacitors.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped carbon materials with a high specific area, a well-defined porous structure is important to high-performance supercapacitors (SCs). Here, S and N co-doped three-dimensional porous graphene aerogel (NS-3DPGHs) have been synthesized in a facile and efficient self-assembly process with thiourea acting as the reducing and doping agent solution. Operating as a SC electrode, fabricated co-doping graphene, i.e. the sample of NS-3DPGH-150 exhibits the highest specific capacitance of 412.9 F g-1 under 0.5 A g-1 and prominent cycle stabilization with 96.4% capacitance retention in the back of 10 000 cycles. Furthermore, based on NS-3DPGH-150, the symmetrical supercapacitor as-prepared in 6 M KOH displays a superior energy density of 12.9 Wh kg-1 under the power density of 249 W kg-1. Hence, NS-3DPGHs could be considered as an excellent candidate for SCs.

Abstract:For the development of small portable energy storage devices with limited space, high volumetric capacitance which representing the chance of reducing the volume is becoming the most critical factor to the real industrial applications. Herein, we introduce a novel simple strategy to fabricate a free-standing binder-free N and F co-doped holey graphene/PANI (NFHG/PANI) composite film, in which the doping of nitrogen and fluorine in holey graphene nanosheets boosts the electron transfer efficiency and facilitates the polymerization and growth of aniline on the graphene surface in the form of nanoparticles. The NFHG/PANI performed a gravimetric capacitance of 580 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1 and long-term cycling stability, more importantly, it delivered 828 F cm−3 superior volumetric capacitance at a high packing density. Apparently, such a free-standing NFHG/PANI composite film with excellent performance is of great significance for the development of miniaturized portable energy storage devices.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped holey graphene hydrogels (HGHs) have attracted great interest owing to their remarkable porous structure, superior electrochemical performances, and prospective applications for supercapacitors. Herein, a simple and scalable approach to synthesize nitrogen, sulfur co-doped three-dimensional HGHs is developed using (NH4)2S2O8 as the pore-making agent and N, S sources by a one-step hydrothermal reaction. In a 6 M KOH electrolyte, the optimized HGH-based asymmetric supercapacitor exhibits an exceptionally high specific capacitance of 354 F g–1 at 1 A g–1, an excellent rate capability of 299 F g–1 at 100 A g–1, and outstanding cycle stability (104% of initial capacity retention at 5 A g–1 after 10,000 cycles). Additionally, the assembled HGH electrode supercapacitor possesses a high energy density of 21.14 Wh kg–1 (449.95 W kg–1) in a 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. The N, S heteroatom doping and hierarchical pore structure are ascribed to the superior electrochemical performance of HGHs. Therefore, the convenient and efficient method in the present work provides new ways into the preparation of heteroatom-doped HGHs for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:We present a facile low-cost method to produce nitrogen-doped holey graphene (N-HGE) and its application to supercapacitors. A composite of N-HGE and activated carbon (AC) was used as the electrode active material in organic-electrolyte supercapacitors, and the performances were evaluated. Melamine was mixed into graphite oxide (GO) as the N source, and an ultra-rapid heating method was used to create numerous holes during the reduction process of GO. X-ray photoelectron spectra confirmed the successful doping with 2.9–4.5 at.% of nitrogen on all samples. Scanning electron micrographs and Raman spectra revealed that a higher heating rate resulted in more holes and defects on the reduced graphene sheets. An extra annealing step at 1000 °C for 1 h was carried out to further eliminate residual oxygen functional groups, which are undesirable in the organic electrolyte system. Compared to the low-heating-rate counterpart (N-GE-15), N-HGE boosted the specific capacity of the supercapacitor by 42 and 22% at current densities of 0.5 and 20 A/g, respectively. The effects of annealing time (0.5, 1, and 2 h) at 1000 °C were also studied. Longer annealing time resulted in higher capacitance values at all current densities due to the minimized oxygen content. Volumetric specific capacitances of 49 and 24 F/cm3 were achieved at current densities of 0.5 and 20 A/g, respectively. For the high-power-density operation at 31,000 W/kg (or 10,000 W/L), an energy density as high as 11 Wh/kg (or 3.5 Wh/L) was achieved. The results indicated that N-HGE not only improved the conductivity of the composite supercapacitors but also accelerated ion transport by way of shortened diffusion paths through the numerous holes all over the graphene sheets.

Abstract:Holey carbon nanosheets provide unique in-plane pores and abundant interlayer channels, which facilitates the penetration and transmission of ions and significant application in the energy storage. However, rational design and fabrication of holey carbon nanosheets with optimized morphology and porosity remains a challenge. Herein, the nitrogen-doped holey carbon nanosheets (N-HCNs) have been prepared via one-step activation and self-generated template assisted carbonization route using "bottom-up" self-assembled polyimide (PI) nanoflowers as carbon precursor and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium zinc salt hydrate (EDTA-Na2Zn) as activating agent and self-generated template. The N-HCNs demonstrates an integral nanoflowers structure with intertwined and holey carbon nanosheets, which would benefit for the transport of ions and electrons, resulting in a satisfactory specific capacitance of 205 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1. More important, a symmetric aqueous supercapacitor assembled based on N-HCNs electrodes carries a wide operating voltage of 2.0 V, possesses high energy density of 17.92 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 500 W kg−1, along with outstanding cycling stability. The present work proposes an affordable strategy to design novel porous carbon materials with controlled morphology for advanced energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Fullerene‐based carbons are promising electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their unique carbon structures and tunable architectures at the molecular level. By introducing various functional groups with many elements on the fullerene cages, diverse in situ metal/nonmetal‐doped carbon materials with enhanced pseudocapacitances and/or double layer capacitances can be prepared. In the present work, a fullerene derivative, ferrocenylpyrrolidine C60, containing nitrogen and iron, is chosen as the only precursor. A unique microstructure is fabricated by a liquid–liquid interfacial precipitation process. Subsequently, a facile, one‐step annealing of the microstructure at different temperatures is performed. A series of in situ N and Fe‐codoped laminated 3D hierarchical carbon composites in the shape of a cross are successfully synthesized. The as‐prepared N and Fe‐codoped carbon material treated at 700 °C exhibits a high specific capacitance of 505.4 F g−1 at 0.1 A g−1. To the best knowledge, this is the highest supercapacitor capacitance based on fullerene electrode materials. The use of a fullerene derivative as an in‐situ doped carbon for applications in energy storage opens a new avenue for developing future synthetic strategies to extend the repertoire of electrode materials with high performance.
