Abstract:The synergistic effects derived from optimizing the chemical and structural features of electrocatalysts permit them to attain remarkable activity and stability. Herein, 1D/2D cobalt‐based nanohybrid (CoNH) electrodes are developed; the structural design consists of Co3O4 electrospun nanoribbons (NRs) deposited onto a carbon fiber paper substrate where Co3O4 nanosheets are subsequently grown via an electrodeposition step and UV/ozone treatment. The content of noncovalently functionalized carbon nanotubes within the Co3O4 NRs is first tuned to enhance their charge transfer properties and mechanical stability. The electrocatalytic activity of the electrodes is further improved by a phosphorus modification of the 1D NRs, resulting in the formation of NaCoPO4. The optimized 1D/2D CoNH electrode, i.e., ED‐0.09 wt% fCNTs/P‐CoNHs, displays a similar performance to that of platinum in 0.25 m Na2S/0.35 m Na2SO3 (Tafel slope ≈102 mV dec−1 for the former and ≈96 mV dec−1 for the latter) and outstanding stability for up to 48 h. The versatility and high activity of this electrode is also demonstrated according to tests in a conventional water splitting system (cell voltage 1.55V, to produce 10 mA cm−2) and a solar‐driven electrolyzer (1 m KOH).

Abstract:Highly integrated cobalt nanoparticle/carbon nanofibers (Co@CNF) with high Co content is indispensable for the efficient electrocatalytic activity, exemplified with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) here. The Co@CNF, obtained via nanoscale assembly and carbonization of metal organic complex nanofibers performed even better than Pt/C in concentrated basic electrolyte for HER with an overpotential of only 196 mV (vs RHE) at the current density of 10 mA/cm(2) in 1 M KOH. Abstract:The rational design of an efficient and inexpensive electrocatalyst based on earth-abundant 3d transition metals (TMs) for the hydrogen evolution reaction still remains a significant challenge in the renewable energy area. Herein, a novel and effective approach is developed for synthesizing ultrafine Co nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) grafted onto both sides of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) (Co@N-CNTs@rGO) by direct annealing of GO-wrapped core-shell bimetallic zeolite imidazolate frameworks. Benefiting from the uniform distribution of Co nanoparticles, the in-situ-formed highly graphitic N-CNTs@rGO, the large surface area, and the abundant porosity, the as-fabricated Co@N-CNTs@rGO composites exhibit excellent electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. As demonstrated in electrochemical measurements, the composites can achieve 10 mA cm-2 at low overpotential with only 108 and 87 mV in 1 m KOH and 0.5 m H2 SO4 , respectively, much better than most of the reported Co-based electrocatalysts over a wide pH range. More importantly, the synthetic strategy is versatile and can be extended to prepare other binary or even ternary TMs@N-CNTs@rGO (e.g., Co-Fe@N-CNTs@rGO and Co-Ni-Cu@N-CNTs@rGO). The strategy developed here may open a new avenue toward the development of nonprecious high-performance HER catalysts.

Abstract:Producing hydrogen by electrolyzing water has received increased attention. Nevertheless, a major challenge remains in the search for high performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. In this work, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) capped by TpPa covalent organic framework (TpPa-COF) react with cobalt nitrate hexahydrate (Co(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O) to form a novel ternary one-body complex (MWCNTs@TpPa-COF@Co/CoO). Wherein, TpPa-COF is constructed from 2,4,6-Triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and p -phenylenediamine (Pa) as structural units. This COF is relatively inexpensive, provides more coordination sites for metal loading, and is particularly stable in acidic and basic media. The results show that the composite material has high electrocatalytic HER activity in a potassium hydroxide (KOH) condition with an overpotential value of 28.8 mV and a Tafel slope of 69.07 mV dec −1 at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Meanwhile, the MWCNTs@TpPa-COF@Co/CoO showed excellent stability after 2000 cycles in alkaline media. The characterization demonstrated that the material provided low resistance during the charge transfer process, which resulted in improved electrochemical performance. In addition, the COF loaded with cobalt nanoparticles provided more active sites for the reaction. Thus, the synthesized MWCNTs@TpPa-COF@Co/CoO emerges turns out to be a Pt-free, stable and efficient HER electrocatalyst, holding significant promise for practical applications.

Abstract:Development of highly active and stable non-noble electrocatalysts with well-defined nanostructures is crucial for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a novel three-dimensional (3D) self-supported electrode consists of vanadium nitride (VN) nanodots and Co nanoparticles co-embedded and highly active single Co atoms anchored in N-doped carbon nanotubes supported on carbon cloth (VN-Co@CoSAs-NCNTs/CC) is fabricated via a one-step in situ nanoconfined pyrolysis strategy, which shows remarkable enhanced HER electrocatalytic activity in acidic medium. During pyrolysis, the formed VN nanodots induce the generation of atomic CoNx sites in NCNTs, contributing to superior electrocatalytic activity. Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results reveal that the electrode has multiple accessible active sites, fast reaction kinetics, low charge/mass transfer resistances, high conductivity, as well as downshifted d-band center with a thermodynamically favorable hydrogen adsorption free energy (delta G(H*)), all of which greatly boost the HER performance. As a result, the VN-Co@CoSAs-NCNTs/CC electrode displays superb catalytic performance toward HER with a low overpotential of 29 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) in acidic medium, which could maintain for at least 60 h of stable performance. This work opens a facile avenue to explore low-cost, high performance, but inexpensive metals/nitrogen-doped carbon composite electrocatalysts for HER. Abstract:With resurgent interest in green hydrogen as a key element in the transition to a renewable‐energy economy, developing efficient, earth‐abundant, and low‐cost catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is becoming increasingly important but is still very challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of Co‐doped Ni3C nanoparticles encapsulated in ultrathin carbon layers (CNCC) by in‐situ thermal decomposition of organic‐inorganic hybrid as high‐performance HER electrocatalysts. Experimental and density functional theory studies evidence that the substantial high‐index (113) surfaces in synergy with a few atomic carbon layers contribute significantly to the activity and stability, while the electronic structure of Ni3C is optimized through tuning the Co content to enhance the intrinsic kinetics for HER. The CNCC exhibits excellent HER activities with overpotentials at 10 mA cm−2 (η10) of 102 and 69 mV and Tafel slopes of 74 and 43 mV dec‐1 in respective neutral and alkaline media along with a superior stability without noticeable decay up to 100 h. More importantly, the CNCC outperforms the benchmark Pt/C catalyst under high current density (> 38 mA cm‐2) in an alkaline electrolyte, showing great potential for practical hydrogen production.

Abstract:To design rationally and manufacture controllably electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) based on abundant elements of the earth is a critical, urgent and necessary. Herein, a unique nano-architecture consisted of Ni hydroxide and CuCoP supported on nickel foam (F-CuCoP/Ni(OH) 2 /NF) has been prepared as a highly efficient HER electrocatalyst by simple hydrothermal, calcination and electrodeposition method. Ni(OH) 2 nanoparticles are attached onto CuCoP nanowires and nanosheets via the electrodeposition process. The resulting F-CuCoP/Ni(OH) 2 /NF exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance for HER with an overpotential as low as 105 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline electrolyte. After 12 h of stability test, the electrode shows a favorable electrocatalytic capability and stability. This particular combination of the means is expectantly conduce to progress of energy.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective and efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts for hydrogen production is of paramount importance to attain a sustainable energy future. Reported herein is a novel three-dimensional hierarchical architectured electrocatalyst, consisting of platinum-copper-nickel nanoparticles-decorated carbon nanofiber arrays, which are conformally assembled on carbon felt fabrics (PtCuNi/CNF@CF) by an ambient-pressure chemical vapor deposition coupled with a spontaneous galvanic replacement reaction. The free-standing PtCuNi/CNF@CF monolith exhibits high porosities, a well-defined geometry shape, outstanding electron conductivity, and a unique characteristic of localizing platinum-copper-nickel nanoparticles in the tips of carbon nanofibers. Such features render PtCuNi/CNF@CF as an ideal binder-free HER electrode for hydrogen production. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the PtCuNi/CNF@CF possesses superior intrinsic activity as well as mass-specific activity in comparison with the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalysts, both in acidic and alkaline solutions. With well-tuned composition of active nanoparticles, Pt42Cu57Ni1/CNF@CF showed excellent durability. The synthesis strategy reported in this work is likely to pave a new route for fabricating free-standing hierarchical electrodes for electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Co nanoparticles with uniform size distribution are promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, we synthesize Co nanoparticles encapsulated in in situ formed N-doped carbon and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) named as Co-N/C(CNTs) by low-temperature carbonization the organic- inorganic hybrid precursors. The as-prepared 4.55% Co-N/C(CNTs) shows the better hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. As demonstrated in electrochemical measurements, 4.55% Co-N/C(CNTs) composite can achieve 10 mA cm(-2) at the overpotential of 263 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 at the first LSV curve. After electrochemical etching, which is carried out through the cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycle with different laps, a uniform Co nanoparticle with a diameter of around 7 nm encapsulated in N-doped carbon is obtained. The overpotential is 168 mV after 4000 times CV cycles and stabilizes at 180 mV after 6000 times cycles. Therefore, this work may provide an idea for the design of high activity HER electrocatalysts in acid solution.
Carbon nanotubes decorated with CoP nanocrystals: a highly active non-noble-metal nanohybrid electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:The development of effective and inexpensive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts for future renewable energy systems is highly desired. The strongly acidic conditions in proton exchange membranes create a need for acid-stable HER catalysts. A nanohybrid that consists of carbon nanotubes decorated with CoP nanocrystals (CoP/CNT) was prepared by the low-temperature phosphidation of a Co3O4/CNT precursor. As a novel non-noble-metal HER catalyst operating in acidic electrolytes, the nanohybrid exhibits an onset overpotential of as low as 40 mV, a Tafel slope of 54 mV dec(-1), an exchange current density of 0.13 mA cm(-2), and a Faradaic efficiency of nearly 100%. This catalyst maintains its catalytic activity for at least 18 hours and only requires overpotentials of 70 and 122 mV to attain current densities of 2 and 10 mA cm(-2), respectively.

Abstract:Exploration of high-efficiency non-noble-metal-based electrocatalysts towards Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for water electrolysis. In this work, we adopt a facile hydrothermal deposition plus hydrogen reduction strategy to fabricate self-supported core/shell nanowire arrays as a high-performance electrocatalyst for HER. The nanowire arrays are firmly anchored on the nickel foam substrate, forming an integrated electrode with excellent stability. The formation mechanism of the unique core/shell nanowire arrays is also explored. By virtue of the superior intrinsic catalytic activity of CoO shell and excellent electrical conductivity of Co core, the electrode exhibits significantly promoted catalytic activity for HER with an ultra-low overpotential (76 mV at 10 mA cm-2) in alkaline solution, which is superior to almost all the reported CoO-based electrocatalysts. Moreover, the electrode also yields superior long-term durability without any significant performance degradation. DFT calculations further verify the underlying mechanisms. Our proposed optimization strategy sheds light on the development of high activity earth-abundant-metal-based electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:In order to alleviate the energy crisis and propel a low-carbon economy, hydrogen (H2) plays an important role as a renewable cleaning resource. To break the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) bottleneck, we need high-efficiency electrocatalysts. Based on the synergistic effect between bimetallic oxides, hierarchical mesoporous CoNiO2 nanosheets can be fabricated. Combining physical representations with electrochemical measurements, the resultant CoNiO2 catalysts present the hierarchical microflowers morphology assembled by mesoporous nanosheets. The ultrathin two-dimensional nanosheets and porous surface characteristics provide the vast channels for electrolyte injection, thus endowing CoNiO2 the outstanding HER performance. The excellent performance with a fewer onset potential of 94 mV, a smaller overpotential at 10 mA cm-2, a lower Tafel slope of 109 mV dec-1 and better stability after 1000 cycles makes CoNiO2 better than that of metallic Co and metallic Ni.

Abstract:Conducting the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline environment using a non-precious transition metal catalyst with high efficiency is challenging. Here, we report excellent HER activity achieved using three-dimensional (3D) tetsubo-like Co(OH)(2) nanorods on a macroporous electrically conductive network (MECN) synthesized by a hydrothermal method. This unique framework comprises three levels of porous structures, including a bottom-ordered MECN substrate, an intermediate layer of vertically porous Co(OH)(2) nanowires with a mean diameter of 100 nm and length of about 2 mu m, and outmost Co(OH)(2) nanosheets (approximate to 20 nm). The 3D array structure with a large aspect ratio provides a large specific surface area and exposes more active sites to catalyze electrochemical reactions at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Compared with Co(OH)(2) nanosheets on an MECN and foamy Co(OH)(2) on an MECN structure, the synthesized architecture has excellent HER catalytic reactivity, including a low potential of -69.2 mV vs. RHE, a cathodic current density of 10 mA cm(-2), a small Tafel slope of 61.9 mV dec(-1), a high current density, and robust catalytic stability in 1 M KOH, and is promising in HER applications.

Herein, we report an integrated PtxCoy-hierarchical carbon matrix electrocatalyst (Pt/Co@NCNTs, Pt3Co@NCNTs, PtCo@NCNTs, and PtCo3@NCNTs) that is developed using a thermally driven Co migration strategy forming alloy nanoparticles to achieve efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Benefiting from its electronic regulation effect and unique hierarchical hollow structure, the Pt3Co@NCNTs catalyst loaded with 11.5 wt % Pt exhibits superior catalytic performance and durability for HER compared with commercial 20 wt % Pt/C. Under both alkaline and acidic conditions, Pt3Co@NCNTs exhibits excellent HER activity with overpotentials of 21 and 45 mV at 10 mA cm(-2), respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) results further verify that the interaction between Pt and Co in Pt3Co@NCNTs can modulate electronic rearrangement, optimize the d-band center, and accelerate water dissociation and *H desorption, thereby enhancing HER activity.

Abstract:The development of electrodes composed of non-noble-metal catalysts with both excellent activity and high stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential for hydrogen production. In this work, a flexible and robust film electrode based on cobalt nanoparticles embedded into the interlamination of N-doped graphene film (Co@NGF) is fabricated by simple vacuum filtration combined with subsequently controlled calcination. This flexible three-dimensional (3D) nano-architecture film directly used as the electrode shows a low onset potential of only -14 mV (vs. RHE) with a small Tafel slope of 93.9 mV per dec for the HER in 0.5 M H2SO4. Stability tests through long term potential cycles and extended electrolysis confirm the perfect durability of Co@NGFs in acid media. The remarkable HER catalytic activity is derived from the electron penetration effect of cobalt nanoparticles as the core protected by N-doped graphene as the shell. It is worth noting that the Co@NGF electrodes, for the first time, used as both the anode and cathode in a two-electrode system open up new possibilities for exploring overall water splitting catalysts in an acid electrolyte. This development offers an attractive HER film electrode for large-scale water splitting technology.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is important for hydrogen generation. Due to the scarcity and high cost of noble metal-based electrocatalysts, it is eager to develop non-precious metal electrocatalysts. In this work, atomic cobalt decorated on N-doped three-dimensional graphene (Co SA/3D-NG) electrocatalyst has been synthesized. Due to the hierarchical porous structure of three-dimensional graphene by coupling effects between Co and N, the Co SA/3D-NG electrocatalyst exhibits an enhanced HER activity. The potential is -180 mV at -10 mA cm −2 and the Tafel slope is 102.53 mV dec −1 . It also presents highly electro-catalytic stability in acidic electrolytes. The work reveals a facile pathway to synthesizing efficient HER electrocatalysts.
Three-dimensional Well-Mixed / Highly-Densed NiS-CoS Nanorod Arrays: an Efficient and Stable Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Abstract:An efficient self-supported 3D structured catalyst is developed by combining simple electro-deposition and hydrothermal route for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER). The as-obtained Ni/Co-S electrodes show exceptional HER performance with excellent durability in both acidic and alkaline solutions, acquiring a hydrogen evolving current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at overpotentials of merely 85 mV and 102 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1.0 M KOH, respectively. For the OER, the as-designed electrocatalyst can afford an oxygen evolving current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential as low as 170 mV in 1.0 M KOH solution. Furthermore, an alkaline water splitting electrolyzer constructed with two pieces of Ni/Co-S electrodes can deliver a full water splitting current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a voltage of 1.47 V. Moreover, a Faradic efficiency close to 100% is obtained. The as-revealed simple design, easiness to large-scale preparation and superior electrocatalytic performance enable the bifunctional Ni/Co-S act as promising electrode materials for overall water splitting. Ternary NixCo3−xS4 with a Fine Hollow Nanostructure As a Robust Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:The elaborate design of efficient and stable electrocatalysts from earth-abundant elements to replace precious Pt for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an ongoing challenge. Doping metallic compounds with additional metal atoms provides the opportunity to tune their electronic and crystal structures, which thus ameliorates their electrocatalytic properties. Herein, we report for the first time a robust and earth-abundant Ni-doped Co3S4 catalyst grown on carbon cloth that shows high HER activity in 1m KOH. Morphology evolution and HER activity were found to be strongly related to the Ni substitution ratio. Electrochemical tests showed a low overpotential of 72.82mV at 10mAcm(-2), a small Tafel slope of 49.44mVdec(-1), and long-term durability over 46h HER operation for the Ni0.5Co2.5S4 nanotube array self-standing on carbon cloth. These data indicate that atomic modulation of Ni plays an important role in optimizing the morphology and electrocatalytic activity by greatly expanding the active sites in the electrocatalyst. Further, the 3D self-standing nanotube array highly aids in the exposure of active species and the transfer of electrons and charges, which substantially boosts the reaction kinetics and stability of the structure.
