Wavefield decomposition is a critical step in elastic imaging, which separates coupled elastic wavefields into pure P- and S-modes. The state-of-theart method of elastic wavefield decomposition is based on the Helmholtz principle, which produces vector wave-fields for both P- and S-waves with correct amplitudes, phases and physical units. In this procedure, we need to solve a vector Poisson's equation. With current computational conditions, directly solving the Poisson's equation for every time slice in elastic reverse time migration (RTM) is still challenging, especially for 3D large-scale experiments. To accelerate the vector-based Helmholtz decomposition, we compare three fast Poisson's solvers for elastic RTM, including fast Fourier transform (FFT), LU factorization and multigrid method. Numerical tests show LU factorization method has intermediate accuracy and the least e ciency. It is just applicable for 2D models due to large memory requirement. FFT method has the highest accuracy and intermediate costs, which can be used for both 2D and 3D problems. The multi-grid method has highest e ciency and the lowest but acceptable accuracy. Therefore, it is the best algorithm for 3D large-scale experiments.
