Abstract:Hierarchical porous ZnO microspheres decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were successfully synthesized by a facile solvothermal route. The hierarchical ZnO superstructure was constructed of interconnected nanoplates with numerous voids. Photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements demonstrated that the main defects were oxygen vacancies (V(O)(•)) with minor interstitial oxygen (O(i)(-)) in the hierarchical ZnO hollow microspheres. The as-prepared hierarchical ZnO hollow microspheres and the AuNPs used to decorate them were examined for their photocatalytic degradation ability and as gas sensors. The photodegradation results demonstrated that the degradation rate constant on rhodamine B for undecorated ZnO microspheres was 0.43 min(-1), which increased to 1.76 min(-1) for AuNP-decorated ZnO microspheres. The AuNP-functionalized ZnO microspheres displayed superior sensing properties, with a 3-fold enhancement in their gas response to 1 ppb of dibutyl phthalate.

Abstract:Porous single crystalline ZnO nanoplates were successfully synthesized through a hydrothermal process followed by annealing of the zinc carbonate hydroxide hydrate precursors.The as-prepared products were characterized by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy,and high revolution transmission electron mi-croscopy.Furthermore,the ZnO gas sensor was fabricated for the detection of indoor air pollutants containing benzene and formaldehyde.The results demonstrate that the porous single crystalline ZnO nanoplates exhibited both sensitive and stable performance towards indoor air pollutants.The response and recovery time of the as-prepared products also reduced compared with commercial ZnO powders.The sensing mechanism and the influ-ence of porous and single-crystalline structures on sensing properties were discussed.

Abstract:With zinc acetate and urea as raw materials,the porous single crystalline ZnO nanoplates were pre-pared by hydrothermal method combined with the heat treatment process.The Au nanoparticles were synthe-sized by the citric acid reduction method.Then,polyethylenimine (PEI)was used to modify the porous single crystalline ZnO nanoplates followed by anchoring Au nanoparticles (NPs)on their surface through electrostatic interactions.The as-prepared products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM)and energy dispersive spectrum (EDS).The porous ZnO nanostructures and the suc-cessful modification of Au nanoparticles were observed.The gas sensitivity experiment showed the as-prepared products exhibited the remarkable selectivity to formaldehyde,the best working temperature was 300 ℃ and a favorable linear response range was 1 0 ~500 ×1 0 -6 .

Abstract:To develop efficient and convenient sensing technology for volatile organic compound (VOCs) detection in residential buildings and process control in industries becomes necessary for human health. Various ZnO nano structures have been employed in VOC detection for their good performance. Among those nanostructures, porous single-crystalline (PSC) ZnO nanosheets not only exhibited highly-sensitive performance but also possessed significantly long-term stability. However, the sensitivity might be further improved by modification noble metal elements. In present work, Ag nanoparticles have been decorated onto the PSC ZnO nanosheets by a sunlight induced solvent reduction method. The as-prepared products have been characterized by SEM, TEM, HRTEM and EDS. By combining the advantages of structure and modification, the sensitivity of the Ag-decorated PSC ZnO nanosheets is 8.8 times higher than that of the bare one. The single-crystalline structure exhibited low electric noise which may lower the detection limit of the sensor.

Abstract:Novel single-crystalline ZnO nanosheets with porous structure have been fabricated by annealing ZnS(en)(0.5) (en = ethylenediamine) complex precursor. The morphology and structure observations performed by field emission scanning electronic microscopy (FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) indicate that numerous mesopores with a diameter of about 26.1 nm distribute all through each nanosheet with a high density. The transformation of structure and composition of samples obtained during thermal treatment processes were investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption spectroscopy. The formation mechanism of the porous structure is proposed. For indoor air contaminant detection in which formaldehyde and ammonia are employed as target gases, the as-prepared ZnO nanosheets were applied for the fabrication of gas sensors. It was found that the as-fabricated sensors not only exhibit highly sensitive performance, e.g., high gas-sensing responses, short response and recovery time, but also possess significant long-term stability. It is indicated that these ZnO nanostructures could promisingly be applied in electronic devices for environmental evaluation.

Abstract:Flower-like hierarchical structures consisting of porous single-crystalline ZnO nanosheets (FHPSCZNs) were synthesized by a one-pot wet-chemical method followed by an annealing treatment, which combined the advantages between flower-like hierarchical structure and porous single-crystalline structure. XRD, SEM and HRTEM were used to characterize the synthesized FHPSCZN samples. The sensing properties of the FHPSCZN sensor were also investigated by comparing with ZnO powder sensor, which exhibited higher response and shorter response and recovery times. Abstract:Porous and single-crystalline ZnO nanobelts have been prepared through annealing precursors of ZnSe · 0.5N2H4 well-defined and smooth nanobelts, which have been synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method. The composition and morphology evolutions with the calcination temperatures have been investigated in detail for as-prepared precursor nanobelts, suggesting that they can be easily transformed into ZnO nanobelts by preserving their initial morphology via calcination in air. In contrast, the obtained ZnO nanobelts are densely porous, owing to the thermal decomposition and oxidization of the precursor nanobelts. More importantly, the achieved porous ZnO nanobelts are single-crystalline, different from previously reported ones. Motivated by the intrinsic properties of the porous structure and good electronic transporting ability of single crystals, their gas-sensing performance has been further explored. It is demonstrated that porous ZnO single-crystalline nanobelts exhibit high response and repeatability toward volatile organic compounds, such as ethanol and acetone, with a short response/recovery time. Furthermore, their optoelectronic behaviors indicate that they can be promisingly employed to fabricate photoelectrochemical sensors.

Abstract:This paper presents gas sensors based on zinc oxide (ZnO), Ce-doped ZnO (CZO), and Au-doped CZO nanowires (NWs) for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Three NW sensing materials were created via one-pot synthesis at low temperature (100 °C). CZO and Au-doped CZO NWs produced a large number of surface oxygen species, which enhanced the responsiveness of the sensors to all types of VOC. Note however that the ZnO NW sensors lacked sensitivity to isopropyl alcohol (IPA). We theorized that overcoming this issue would require doping ZnO NWs with noble metals or rare-earth elements. In experiments, we demonstrated that doping NWs with Au shifted the selectivity of a CZO NWs sensor from acetone to IPA. This study also proposes sensing mechanisms for three metal-doped ZnO NWs.

Abstract:Surmounting the inhomogeniety issue of gas sensors and realizing their reproducible ppb-level gas sensing are highly desirable for widespread deployments of sensors to build networks in applications of industrial safety and indoor/outdoor air quality monitoring. Herein, a strategy is proposed to substantially improve the surface homogeneity of sensing materials and gas sensing performance via chip-level pyrolysis of as-grown ZIF-L (ZIF stands for zeolitic imidazolate framework) films to porous and hierarchical zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosheets. A novel approach to generate adjustable oxygen vacancies is demonstrated, through which the electronic structure of sensing materials can be fine-tuned. Their presence is thoroughly verified by various techniques. The sensing results demonstrate that the resultant oxygen vacancy-abundant ZnO nanosheets exhibit significantly enhanced sensitivity and shortened response time toward ppb-level carbon monoxide (CO) and volatile organic compounds encompassing 1,3-butadiene, toluene, and tetrachloroethylene, which can be ascribed to several reasons including unpaired electrons, consequent bandgap narrowing, increased specific surface area, and hierarchical micro-mesoporous structures. This facile approach sheds light on the rational design of sensing materials via defect engineering, and can facilitate the mass production, commercialization, and large-scale deployments of sensors with controllable morphology and superior sensing performance targeted for ultratrace gas detection.

Abstract:In this work, an in-situ grown and Pt-decorated ZnO nanoclusters (NCs) gas sensor was fabricated by employing etched FTO glass as the growth substrate and gas-sensing electrode via facile dip-coating assisted hydrothermal route and physical mixing method, which exhibited superior gas-sensing performance for low-concentration H2S at room temperature. Benefiting by the in-situ growth, good ohmic contacts between ZnO NCs and FTO electrode are formed, which maximize the gas-sensing performance and enhancing the stability of the sensor. On this basis, ZnO NCs with top cross-linked structure can provide adequate grain-boundary potential barriers and self-assembled electron pathways, as well as larger effective surface area and gas diffusion space. What's more, Pt nanoparticles (NPs) decoration on the surface of ZnO NCs can introduce more catalytic sites and proper Schottky barriers for gas-sensing tests. Due to their synergistic effects, the in-situ grown and Pt-decorated ZnO NCs sensor exhibit excellent room-temperature gas-sensing behaviors for H2S. Among samples, 1.5 at% Pt-decorated ZnO NCs sensor possesses the highest response value, excellent selectivity, repeatability and stability, which achieves the room-temperature detection of H2S at ppb level. In addition, the effect of Pt decoration on the gas-sensing behaviors under high temperature condition and the mechanism of enhancing gas-sensing performance were also systematically investigated.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) semiconductor nanostructure has been widely used for gas sensor devices. In this work, a high performance gas sensor based on Au-functionalized ZnO nanorods was fabricated. Au nanoparticles were successfully immobilized onto the surface of ZnO nanorods to serve as a sensitizer by a facile solution reduction process. The hybrid Au/ZnO nanorods have been systematically characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM and optical absorption spectrum. Gas sensing tests reveal that the Au/ZnO sensor has remarkably enhanced performance compared to pure ZnO. It could detect ethanol gas in a wide concentration range with very high response, fast response–recovery time, good selectivity and stable repeatability. The possible sensing mechanism is discussed. The superior sensing features indicate the present Au/ZnO nanorods are promising for gas sensors.
Hexagonal ZnO Nanoplates/graphene Composites with Excellent Sensing Performance to NO2 at Room Temperature

Abstract:Metal oxides with high-energy facets usually have more active surface sites to facilitate gas adsorption. In this work, the ZnO/graphene composites are synthesized hydrothermally and the morphology of ZnO nanoparticles can be changed from nanorods to nanoplates with the high-energy {0001} polar surface exposed by changing the density of sodium citrate in the reaction. The ZnO{0001}/graphene composites have better sensing properties to NO2 at room temperature (RT). Based on first-principles calculation, the adsorption energy of NO2 on the ZnO {0001} facet is more negative than that on the {0110} surface indicating stronger interactions between the former and NO2. Furthermore, the ZnO{0110} surface shows semiconducting characteristics, whereas the ZnO {0001} polar surface is metallic. The metallic characteristics promote charge transfer at the interface between ZnO and graphene and enhance the NO2 detection sensitivity.
Facile Synthesis of ZnO/WO3 Nanocomposite Porous Films for High-Performance Gas Sensing of Multiple VOCs

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor environments have typical features of multiple components, high concentration, and long duration. The development of gas sensors with high sensitivity to multiple VOCs is of great significance to protect human health. Herein, we proposed a sensitive ZnO/WO3 composite chemi-resistive sensor facilely fabricated via a sacrificial template approach. Based on the transferable properties of self-assembled monolayer colloidal crystal (MCC) templates, two-dimensional honeycomb-like ordered porous ZnO/WO3 sensing matrixes were constructed in situ on commercial ceramic tube substrates with curved and rough surfaces. The nanocomposite thin films are about 250 nm in thickness with large-scale structural consistency and integrity, which facilitates characteristic responses with highly sensitivity and reliability. Furthermore, the nanocomposite sensor shows simultaneous responses to multiple VOCs that commonly exist in daily life with an obvious suppression sensing for traditional flammable gases. Particularly, a detection limit of 0.1 ppm with a second-level response/recovery time can be achieved, which is beneficial for real-time air quality assessments. We proposed a heterojunction-induced sensing enhancement mechanism for the ZnO/WO3 nanocomposite film in which the formation of abundant heterojunctions between ZnO and WO3 NPs significantly increases the thickness of the electron depletion layer in the bulk film and improves the formation of active oxygen species on the surface, which is conducive to enhanced responses for reducing VOC gases. This work not only provides a simple approach for the fabrication of high-performance gas sensors but also opens an achievable avenue for air quality assessment based on VOC concentration detection.
High energy facets and oxygen vacancies guided hierarchical tin dioxide microcubes assembled by cross-stacked nanoslices for ethanol gas-sensing

Abstract:For metal oxide gas sensors, the upstream theoretical mechanism can provide both quantum guidance for screening favorable materials and important insights in fabricating electronic devices. However, except for widely popular Yamazoe's 'receptor-transducer-utility' model, some specific theoretical models still lack for diverse sensing properties of metal oxide semiconductor currently. Based on a deeper understanding of surface catalytic mechanism, n-type SnO2 was selected as an example to screen a better solution. Herein, hierarchical SnO2 microcubes assembled from cross-stacked nanoslices were synthesized via a self-templated method, and the SnO2 microcubes displayed versatile performances with excellent response to 100 ppm ethanol (Sr = Rair/Rgas = 56.9), relative low optimal working temperature of 170 degrees C, good repeatability under high R.H. (90%) and ultra-low detection limit even under 0.1 ppm. The performances of SnO2 nanofilms, hierarchical SnO2 nanotubes and commercial SnO2 powder were also studied. The results showed that the increase of exposed higher energy facet of (101) and rich oxygen vacancies on 3D-crossed nanoslices of SnO2 microcubes contribute to outstanding gas sensing performances, which were also confirmed by the DFT calculations. These demonstrate a diverse sensing mechanism and a new insights for state-in-art gas sensing materials of SnO2 . (c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Constructing 2D Porous ZnO Gas Sensors Based on Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Assisted Zn-MOF Nanosheets for NO2 Detection

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) ZnO nanomaterials are promising for gas sensing, because of their large surface area, abundant active sites, and rapid charge transfer. However, it is challenging to prepare 2D ZnO nanosheet gas sensors with high sensing performance, due to the tight interlayer stack and low adsorptive property of ZnO for NO2 molecules. Herein, we synthesized Zn-MOF nanosheets employing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the structure-directing agent, further through pyrolysis of the Zn-MOF to obtain 2D ZnO nanosheet gas sensors. As anticipated, the 2D ZnO gas sensors exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for NO2, and the optimal sample could achieve a response value of 162 at the working temperature of 160 °C, which is 10 times higher than that of pristine ZnO. Meanwhile, experimental and DFT results showed that PVP plays critical roles in the lateral lattice growth of 2D Zn-MOF nanosheets, while the existence of PVP makes the ZnO gas sensors with rich porous property and more oxygen vacancy after the pyrolysis process, which promoted the adsorption, activity, and surface reaction for NO2 molecules. It provides a new approach for the application of 2D ZnO nanosheets in the NO2 detection field.
Porous ZnO/ZnCo2O4 Hollow Spheres: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications in Gas Sensing

Abstract:Dispersed porous ZnO/ZnCo2O4 hollow spheres were successfully prepared by annealing the precursor, which was obtained via a facile one-step solvothermal method without any templates or surfactants. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) measurement showed that the crystal phase of the sample was a mixture of ZnO and ZnCo2O4. The field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed that the as-synthesized porous ZnO/ZnCo2O4 hollow spheres had an average diameter of about 850 nm and were constructed from a large number of primary nanoparticles. To demonstrate the potential applications of such porous ZnO/ZnCo2O4 composites, the as-prepared products were used to fabricate a gas sensor that was then investigated for gas-sensing performances. Results of the test showed that this sensor had fast response kinetics to acetone at the operating temperature of 275 °C, and a high response to 100 ppm acetone, one that was about 4 times higher than that of sensors based on ZnO/ZnCo2O4 nanoparticles. The remarkable enhancement in the gas-sensing properties of the porous ZnO/ZnCo2O4 hollow spheres was attributed to their unique structure.

Abstract:ZnO nanorods with hexagonal wurtzite structure were synthesized by the facile chemical bath deposition method.In order to alter their gas response towards the various test gases,the surfaces of ZnO nano-rods were decorated with different nanoparticles,such as Ag,CuO and NiO.The gas response and selectivity of the surface modification of ZnO nanorods were investigated.The results showed that their gas sensing perform-ances were improved obviously after the surface decoration.Especially,the ZnO nanorods decorated by CuO nanoparticles have the higher selectivity and sensitivity to hydrogen sulfide gas than the other test gases.

Abstract:The Au@ZnO yolk-shell nanospheres with a distinctive core@void@shell configuration have been successfully synthesized by deposition of ZnO on Au@carbon nanospheres. Various techniques were employed for the characterization of the structure and morphology of as-obtained hybrid nanostructures. The results indicated that the Au@ZnO yolk shell nanospheres have an average diameter of about 280 nm and the average thickness of the ZnO shell is ca. 40 nm. To demonstrate how such a unique structure might bring about more excellent gas sensing property, we carried out a comparison of the sensing performances of ZnO nanospheres with different inner structures. It was found that Au@ZnO yolk shell nanospheres exhibited an obvious improvement in response to acetone compared with the pure ZnO nanospheres with hollow and solid inner structures. For instance, the response of the Au@ZnO nanospheres to 100 ppm acetone was about 37, which was about 2 (3) times higher than that of ZnO hollow (solid) nanostructures. The enhanced sensing properties were attributed to their unique microstructures (porous shell and internal voids) and the catalytic effect of the encapsulated Au nanoparticles.
Highly porous ZnO modified with photochemical deposition of silver nanostructure for ultra-sensitive triethylamine detection

Abstract:Doping noble metals into semiconductor based gas sensors was proved to be an effective strategy in improving gas response properties. Here, we report a silver/silver (II) oxide nanoparticles (Ag/AgO NPs) modified highly porous ZnO nanocomposite. Firstly, the Ag NPs were evenly deposited on the surface of flower-like ZnCO 3 precursors through a simple photochemical reduction method, which was then heated at 400 °C to give highly porous Ag/AgO/ZnO nanocomposite, accompaning with the dissociation of ZnCO 3 after release of CO 2 . The interleaving ultrathin and porous sheet-like features of Ag/AgO/ZnO nanocomposite afford it excellent triethylamine (TEA) sensing performance with R a /R g = 90.3 at an operating temperature of 240 °C, and the response sensitivity is 5.5-fold higher than that of pure ZnO. Specifically, the porous Ag/AgO/ZnO nanocomposite exhibited a fast response/recovery time of 53 s/8 s and oustanding long-term cyclic stability. The enhanced gas sensing performance can be attributed to the sensitization of Ag/AgO NPs, significantly increasing the number of oxygen vacancies and thus providing more reactive sites. The synergistic interaction between Ag/AgO NPs and porous ZnO nanosheets also facilitates a fast electron transport and a high permeability for gas molecules. This work displays a feasible way of coupling photochemical reduction and pyrolysis strategy to develop highly porous ZnO nanosheets functionalized by noble metal NPs with remarkably enhanced gas response property.
