Abstract:Plasmonic nanoantennas, which can efficiently convert light from free space into sub-wavelength scale with the local field enhancement, are fundamental building blocks for nanophotonic systems. Predominant design methods, which exploit a single type of near- or far-field coupling in pairs or arrays of plasmonic nanostructures, have limited the tunability of spectral response and the local field enhancement. To overcome this limit, we are developing a general strategy towards exploiting the coordinated effects of multiple coupling. Using Au bowtie nanoantenna arrays with metal-insulator-metal configuration as examples, we numerically demonstrate that coordinated design and implementation of various optical coupling effects leads to both the increased tunability in the spectral response and the significantly enhanced electromagnetic field. Furthermore, we design and analyze a refractive index sensor with an ultra-high figure-of-merit (254), a high signal-to-noise ratio and a wide working range of refractive indices and a narrow-band near-infrared plasmonic absorber with 100% absorption efficiency, high quality factor of up to 114 and a wide range of tunable wavelength from 800 nm to 1,500 nm. The plasmonic nanoantennas that exploit coordinated multiple coupling will benefit a broad range of applications, including label-free bio-chemical detection, reflective filter, optical trapping, hot-electron generation and heat-assisted magnetic recording.
Multiple Plasmonic-Photonic Couplings in the Au Nanobeaker Arrays: Enhanced Robustness and Wavelength Tunability

Abstract:Diffractive coupling in the plasmonic nanoparticle arrays introduces the collective plasmon resonances with high scattering efficiency and narrow linewidth. However, the collective plasmon resonances can be suppressed when the arrays are supported on the solid-state substrates with different superstrates because of the different dispersion relations between the substrate and the superstrate. Herein, we develop a general concept which seeks to synergize the subnanoparticle engineering of "hot spots" with the far-field coupling behavior, for the versatile control of plasmonic-photonic couplings in an asymmetric environment. To demonstrate our concept, we choose as an example the Au nanobeaker arrays (NBAs), which are the conformally coated Au thin layers on the interior sidewalls and bottoms of nanohole arrays in SiO2 substrates. Using the finite-difference time-domain simulations, we show that engineering the plasmonic "hot spots" in the NBAs by simply controlling the depth-to-diameter aspect ratio of individual units enables multiple plasmonic-photonic couplings in an asymmetric environment. These couplings are robust with a wide range of resonance wavelengths from visible to infrared. Furthermore, the angle-dependent transmission spectra of the arrays reveal a transition from band-edge to propagating state for the orthogonal coupling and a splitting of diffraction waves in the parallel coupling. The proposed NBAs will find enhanced applications in plasmonic lasers and biosensing.
Tuning Optical Responses of Metallic Dipole Nanoantenna Using Graphene

Abstract:Nanoantennas play a fundamental role in the nanotechnology due to their capabilities to confine and enhance the light through converting the localized fields to propagating ones, and vice versa. Here, we theoretically propose a novel nanoantenna with the metal-insulator-graphene configuration where a graphene sheet dynamically controls the characteristics of a metallic dipole antenna in terms of near-field distribution, resonance frequency, bandwidth, radiation pattern, etc. Our results show that by modifying dispersion relation of the graphene sheet attached to the insulator through tuning chemical potentials, we can achieve strong mode couplings between the graphene sheet and the metallic nanoantenna on the top of the insulator. Interestingly, the in-phase and out-of-phase couplings between metallic plasmonics and graphene plasmonics not only split the single resonance frequency of the conventional metallic dipole antenna but also modify the near-field and far-field responses of the metal-graphene nanoantenna. This work is of a great help to design high-performance electrically-tunable nanoantennas applicable both in nano-optics and nano-electronics fields.

Abstract:Strong electromagnetic field confinement and enhancement can be readily achieved in plasmonic nanoantennas, however, this is considerably more difficult to realize over large areas, which is essential for many applications. Here, dispersion engineering in plasmonic metamaterials is applied to successfully develop and demonstrate a coupled array of plasmonic-dielectric nanoantennas offering an ultrahigh density of electromagnetic hot spots (10(11) cm(-2)) over macroscopic, centimeter scale areas. The hetero-metamaterial is formed by a highly ordered array of vertically standing plasmonic dipolar antennas with a ZnO gap and fabricated using a scalable electrodeposition technique. It supports a complex modal structure, including guided, surface and gap modes, which offers rich opportunities, frequently beyond the local effective medium theory, with optical properties that can be easily controlled and defined at the fabrication stage. This metamaterial platform can be used in a wide variety of applications, including hot-electron generation, nanoscale light sources, sensors, as well as nonlinear and memristive devices.

Abstract:The near field coupling effect between a metallic nanostructure and a superlens has been studied numerically. It is found that the coupling effect is significant and the field distribution is altered substantially by it. This effect has a wide range of potential applications, for example using this effect in plasmonic nanostructures we can design devices with novel functionalities, such as a nanoatenna-superlens system with mismatched permittivities.

Abstract:Over the last few years, optical nanoantennas are continuously attracting interest owing to their ability to efficiently confine, localize resonance, and significantly enhanced electromagnetic fields at subwavelength scale. However, such strong confinement can be further enhanced by using an appropriate combination of optical nanoantenna and Slanted Bound states in the continuum cavities. Here, we propose to synergistically bridge the plasmonic nanoantenna and high optical quality-factor cavities to numerically demonstrate three orders of magnitude local intensity enhancement. The proposed hybrid system paves a new way for applications requiring highly confined fields such as optical sensing, optical trapping, nonlinear optics, quantum optics, etc.

Abstract:By placing a single Au nanoparticle on the surface of a cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanowire, we demonstrate strong coupling of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes in the nanoparticle and whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in the nanowire. For a 50-nm-diameter Au-nanosphere particle, strong coupling occurs when the nanowire diameter is between 300 and 600 nm, with a mode splitting up to 80 meV. Using a temperature-induced spectral shift of the resonance wavelength, we also observe the anticrossing behavior in the strongly coupled system. In addition, since the Au nanosphere has spherical symmetry, the supported LSPR mode can be selectively coupled with transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) WGMs in the nanowire. The ultracompact strong-coupling system shown here may provide a versatile platform for studying hybrid "photon-plasmon" nanolasers, nonlinear optical devices, and nanosensors.
Nanoantenna-Microcavity Hybrids with Highly Cooperative Plasmonic-Photonic Coupling

Abstract:Nanoantennas offer the ultimate spatial control over light by concentrating optical energy well below the diffraction limit, whereas their quality factor (Q) is constrained by large radiative and dissipative losses. Dielectric microcavities, on the other hand, are capable of generating a high Q-factor through an extended photon storage time but have a diffraction-limited optical mode volume. Here we bridge the two worlds, by studying an exemplary hybrid system integrating plasmonic gold nanorods acting as nanoantennas with an on-resonance dielectric photonic crystal (PC) slab acting as a low-loss microcavity and, more importantly, by synergistically combining their advantages to produce a much stronger local field enhancement than that of the separate entities. To achieve this synergy between the two polar opposite types of nanophotonic resonant elements, we show that it is crucial to coordinate both the dissipative loss of the nanoantenna and the Q-factor of the low-loss cavity. In comparison to the antenna-cavity coupling approach using a Fabry-Perot resonator, which has proved successful for resonant amplification of the antenna's local field intensity, we theoretically and experimentally show that coupling to a modest-Q PC guided resonance can produce a greater amplification by at least an order of magnitude. The synergistic nanoantenna-microcavity hybrid strategy opens new opportunities for further enhancing nanoscale light-matter interactions to benefit numerous areas such as nonlinear optics, nanolasers, plasmonic hot carrier technology, and surface-enhanced Raman and infrared absorption spectroscopies.

Abstract:Huygens' meta-atom is the basic building unit of Huygens' metasurfaces allowing for almost arbitrary wavefront shaping across a surface. We here present a kind of Huygens' meta-atom by coupling a nanodisk to its Babinet-complementary structure (nanohole), and develop an optical lumped nanocircuit model to analyze vertical and lateral coupling effects and resonance frequencies. Simulation results show that the tuned coupling via lateral misalignment between the two nanostructures is sufficient to shape the wavefront without changing the dimensions or orientations of antennas. By tuning the coupling via lateral misalignment, we design a reflective gradient metasurface based on one coupled mode and a high-efficiency transmissive gradient metasurface working in the spectral overlap of electric and magnetic resonances to realize beam deflection. The proposed coupling-based Huygens' meta-atom is a new building block for plasmonic metasurfaces with enhanced light-matter interactions, high-efficiency and almost arbitrary wavefront shaping over the full electromagnetic spectrum.

Abstract:Nanophotonic systems have attracted tremendous attention due to their exotic abilities to freely control electromagnetic (EM) waves. In particular, much attention has been given to metasurfaces consisting of multiple plasmonic/dielectric meta-atoms coupled in different ways. Compared to simple systems containing only one type of resonator, coupled photonic systems exhibit more fascinating capabilities to manipulate EM waves. However, despite the great advances already achieved in experimental conditions, theoretical understandings of these complex systems are far from satisfactory. In this article, we summarize the theorized tools for developing nanophotonic systems including both coupled resonators and periodic metasurfaces. We aim to understand the EM properties in closed and open systems, and introduce methods of employing them to design new functional metasurfaces for various applications. We will mainly focus on works done in our own group and we hope that this short review can provide useful guidance and act as a reference for researchers in related fields.
Tailoring the Coupling Between Localized and Propagating Surface Plasmons: Realizing Fano-Like Interference and High-Performance Sensor

Abstract:Surface plasmon modes originated from various metallic nanostructures possess unique features of strong nanoscale light confinement and enhancement with tunable energy, which make them attractive and promising for a variety of applications such as sensing, solar cell, and lasing. Here, we have investigated the interaction between localized and propagating surface plasmons in a structure consisting of a gold nanobar array and a thick gold film, separated by a silica dielectric spacer layer. It is found that the reflection spectrum of the designed plasmonic structure can be readily tailored by changing the gold nanobar size, array period and the spacer layer thickness. Moreover, the strong coupling between the localized and propagating modes can result in an anticrossing behavior and even induce a Fano-like asymmetric lineshape. Importantly, the sensitivity and the figure of merit (FoM) of this plasmonic system can reach as high as 936 nm/RIU and 112, respectively. Our study offers a new, simple, efficient and controllable way to design the plasmonic systems with desired modes coupling and spectral lineshapes for different applications.

Abstract:We report direct coupling of plasmonic and photonic nanowires using ultracompact near-field interaction. Photon-plasmon coupling efficiency up to 80% with coupling length down to the 200 nm level is achieved between individual Ag and ZnO nanowires. Hybrid nanophotonic components, including polarization splitters, Mach-Zehnder interferometers, and microring cavities, are fabricated out of coupled Ag and ZnO nanowires. These components offer relatively low loss with subwavelength confinement; a hybrid nanowire microcavity exhibits a Q-factor of 520.

Abstract:In this article, we reviewed new designs for plasmonic nanostructure and its nanofocusing, coupling, resonance, and waveguide characterizations. With in-plane Fresnel zone plates, a 15 times field enhancement was achieved for the plasmonic nanofocusing. Plasmonic antennas placed at both ends of a single nanowire, consisting of a nanooptical circuit, was successfully realized in an enhanced plasmon coupling and emission. Plasmonic Fano resonance was also observed in a single sliced Ag nanodisk with the structure symmetry breaking. A hybrid plasmonic waveguide with a CdS nanoribbon placed on Ag surface showed an excellent mode confinement and energy low dissipation. More potential applications based on these plasmonic configurations are also discussed in this article.

Abstract:The nanoscale ampification of light-matter interactions exhibits profound potential in multiple scientific fields, such as physics, chemistry, surface science, materials science, and nanophotonics. Nonetheless, achieving robust optical mode coupling within cavities faces significant hurdles due to modal dispersion and weak optical field confinement. In this theoretical investigation, we demonstrate the viability of strong coupling between the anapole mode of a slotted silicon nanodisk and the plasmonic modes of an Ag nanodisk dimer at visible light frequencies. By introducing anapole modes, we successfully confine light to subwavelength volumes, suppressing radiative losses and achieving a remarkable Rabi splitting of 468 meV. This substantial coupling is facilitated by the large spatial overlap of intense optical fields. Capitalizing on this strong mode coupling, we generate novel hybrid energy states with significant electromagnetic field enhancement. Our study serves as a valuable blueprint for designing platforms based on strong anapole mode coupling at visible frequencies and paves the way for deeper explorations into nanoscale light-matter interactions.

Abstract:Coupled plasmonic systems are of great interest and have many applications such as information processing and sensing. By choosing proper geometric configurations of coupled plasmonic systems, one can obtain various optical properties. However, some interesting and important effects could not be described by earlier methods. We develop an improved method for coupled plasmonic nanoparticle systems that maps geometric configurations to optical properties more accurately. With the improved method, we realize a low-loss cavity of metallic nanoparticles through a proper geometric configuration, and we find a limit to the loss in the metallic nano-cavity. We also use this method to realize an exceptional point and exceptional nexus in a hybrid plasmonic system. Finally, we predict asymmetric coupling, which leads to chirality and directional energy transfer.

Abstract:The electromagnetic (EM) coupling between metal nanoparticles (NPs) is of essential importance in nanoplasmonic systems, leading to a variety of fundamental studies and practical applications. The successive investigations in this field not only bring forward surprising optical effects in nanoplasmonics, but also allow revealing other novel chemical/physical properties in relevant systems. In this article, we will discuss the EM coupling in four types of typical plasmonic nanostructures, i.e., single aggregated metal NPs, asymmetric metal NPs dimers, nano-manipulated metal NPs and supported metal NPs on a substrate, and outlook the corresponding impacts in understanding physics and extending applications.

Abstract:Plasmon coupling is an essential strategy to realize strong local electromagnetic (EM) field which is crucial for high-performance plasmonic devices. In this work, multiple plasmon couplings are demonstrated in three-dimensional (3D) hybrid plasmonic systems composed of polydimethylsiloxane-supported ordered silver nanocone (AgNC) arrays decorated with high-density gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) which are fabricated by a template-assisted physical vapor deposition process. Strong interparticle coupling, particle-film coupling, inter-cone coupling, and particle-cone coupling are revealed by numerical simulations in such composite nanostructures, which produce intense and high-density EM hot spots, boosting highly sensitive and reproducible surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection with an enhancement factor of ∼ 1.74 × 108. Furthermore, a linear correlation between logarithmic Raman intensity and logarithmic concentration of probe molecules is observed in a large concentration range. These results offer new ideas to develop novel plasmonic devices, and provide alternative strategy to realize flexible and high-performance SERS sensors for trace molecule detection and quantitative analysis.

Abstract:<p>A complete control of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of different types of metal nanoparticles (size, shape, or composition) in a device by facile techniques with high throughput is crucial to intensively study and apply the LSPR effects to improve device performance. Here, a versatile approach is presented to fabricate macroscopic and in‐plane multiplex arrays of plasmonic nanoparticles with well‐defined particle size or composition allocation. The polymer layer (poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAM) spin‐coated on the surface of the substrate is applied as a protective layer to control the growth of the Au nanoparticles in a dip‐coating procedure. The relative contribution of LSPR of each particle type can be controlled by selectively adjusting the particle size or composition at the desired position of multiplex arrays on the same substrate. A synergistic enhanced photocurrent response is observed in the metal–semiconductor system, which is attributed to broadened LSPR enhancement of multiplex composition (Au and Au@Ag) structures from the same substrate. The fabrication procedure presented in this study is highly repeatable and feasible for preparing ordered multiplex nanostructures on the same substrate. Furthermore, this method provides a cost‐effective and versatile platform for design of multiplex plasmonic nanostructures in sensing, solar energy conversion, and optical processing applications.</p>

Abstract:Sub-wavelength strongly confined electromagnetic field induced by surface plasmon resonance offers a promising method to enhance the light-matter interactions, which has wide applications in the fields of enhanced spectroscopy, photovoltaic conversion, and photocatalysis. For periodic metal nanostructures, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) can couple with the long-range diffractive interaction, causing a narrow linewidth. Here, we report a new family of plasmonic nanostructure fabricated through nanoimprint lithograph, which enables completely uniform, reproducible, and low-cost Au nanofinger multimer arrays with high aspect ratio at the manufacturing scale. Through adjusting the lattice spacing and the angle of incident light, the different collective coupling strengths between the diffraction modes and the LSPR of trimer or pentamer Au nanofingers arrays are observed experimentally by angle-resolved reflection spectroscopy. According to the numerical simulation based on the finite element method, the dynamic evolution of collective coupled modes is demonstrated. The typical surface charge distribution and electric field distribution of the coupled dipole resonance show a significant electromagnetic field enhancement. By adjusting the height of nanofingers, lattice spacing and gap size of adjacent nanofingers, the feasibility of the coupled modes is further investigated. This work provides an excellent candidate for the localization of light as chip-scale plasmonic devices.
