Abstract:We propose and investigate a novel and simple photonic vector signal generation scheme at radio frequency bands enabled by a single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator-based optical carrier suppression without precoding techniques and optical filter, which can reduce the complexity of transmitter digital signal processing. The generation and reception of 16/20/22-Gbaud quadrature-phase-shift-keying vector signals at 16/20/22 GHz are experimentally demonstrated, respectively. The measured bit-error ratio for 16 G-baud QPSK vector signals after transmitting over 10-km standard single mode fiber can be under 7% hard-decision forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. Moreover, compared to the conventional precoding scheme, the receiver sensitivity can be enhanced by 4 dB at both back-to-back and after 10-km SSMF transmission cases, which demonstrates the feasibility of this proposal, and show its potential promising application in radio over fiber system.

Abstract:We propose a photonic method for generating millimeter-wave 4-QAM/QPSK modulated signals. The method is based on optical phase modulation by multilevel electrical signals and optical carrier-suppression. Simulation results are presented for 2.5 Gsymbol/s 4-QAM and QPSK signals at a 36 GHz carrier. Furthermore, this method can be extended to generate millimeter-wave m-PSK signals and can be incorporated into broadband radio-over-fiber systems to support wireless/ wireline converged access network.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate how to generate photonic eight quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) vector signal by using only one Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). Because of the ‘square-law’ characteristic of the photodetector (PD), the amplitudes and the phase of the driving radio-frequency (RF) signal are changed after detection. The pre-coding for the amplitudes and the phase of the driving radio-frequency (RF) signal before they drive the MZM will take the advantages of restoring the driving precoding signal to regular signal after PD. The transmission performance with different date rates at 1, 2, and 3-Gbaud over single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission is experimentally demonstrated. The bit-error ratios (BERs) of the transmission system are less than the forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3.

Abstract:We propose QPSK millimeter-wave (mm-wave) vector signal generation for D-band based on balanced precoding-assisted photonic frequency quadrupling technology employing a single intensity modulator without an optical filter. The intensity MZM is driven by a balanced pre-coding 37-GHz QPSK RF signal. The modulated optical subcarriers are directly sent into the single ended photodiode to generate 148-GHz QPSK vector signal. We experimentally demonstrate 1-Gbaud 148-GHz QPSK mm-wave vector signal generation, and investigate the bit-error-rate (BER) performance of the vector signals at 148-GHz. The experimental results show that the BER value can be achieved as low as 1.448 × 10-3 when the optical power into photodiode is 8.8dBm. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to realize the frequency-quadrupling vector mm-wave signal generation at D-band based on only one MZM without an optical filter.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme for high-frequency quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) photonic vector signal generation based on a single directly modulated laser (DML) employing photonic frequency quadrupling and balanced pre-coding technologies. In order to realize frequency quadrupling, a wavelength selective switch (WSS) is intruded in our experiment. The intruded WSS combined with DML can not only realize high-frequency vector signal generation but also simplify the architecture. We experimentally demonstrate 1-or 2-Gbaud QPSK vector signal generation at 88GHz based on our proposed scheme. The generated 1-Gbaud balanced pre-coded QPSK vector signal is transmitted 0.5-m wireless distance with the bit-error-ratio (BER) below hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3. To our knowledge, this is the first time to demonstrate W-band mm-wave vector signal based on a single DML with quadrupling frequency and pre-coding technologies.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the generation of polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulated vector signal adopting Mach–Zehnder-modulator-based (MZM-based) optical-carrier-suppression (OCS) intensity modulation and direct detection. The MZM is driven by a 6-GHz precoded vector signal carrying 2-Gbaud QPSK transmitter data, and biased at its minimum transmission point to realize OCS modulation. The phase of the 6-GHz precoded vector signal is 1/2 of that of the regular QPSK symbol. Only one polarization beam splitter (PBS) is needed to implement optical polarization diversity. The bit-error rate (BER) for the 2-Gbaud PDM-QPSK modulated vector signal can reach the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3 after 80-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) transmission in the presence of optical dispersion compensation, and 80-km SMF-28 transmission causes no power penalty.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a novel and simple method to generate and detect high speed polarization-division-multiplexing 16-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation (PDM-16QAM) vector signal enabled by Mach–Zehnder modulator-based (MZM-based) optical-carrier-suppression (OCS) intensity modulation and direct detection. Due to the adoption of OCS intensity modulation, carrier beating can be avoided at the receiver, and thus polarization de-multiplexing can be implemented by digital-signal-processing-based (DSP-based) cascaded multi-modulus algorithm (CMMA) equalization instead of a polarization tracking system. The change of both amplitude and phase information due to the adoption of OCS modulation can be equalized by DSP-based amplitude and phase precoding at the transmitter. Up to 64-Gb/s PDM-16QAM vector signal is generated and detected after 2-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) or 20-km large-effective-area fiber (LEAF) transmission with a bit-error-ratio (BER) less than the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3.

Abstract:A novel scheme for photonic vector signal generation based on a self-starting optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) and optical coherent quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The optical output sidebands of the OEO are employed for optical heterodyne mixing, where one first-order sideband is modulated by QPSK baseband data using a dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator, followed by coherent detection so as to directly generate frequency-doubled K-band vector signals. In the experiment, a 19.9 GHz QPSK modulated vector signal with a bit rate of 100 Mb/s is generated when the OEO operates at 9.95 GHz. The generated signal is back demodulated with error vector magnitude (EVM) less than 7%.

Abstract:In this study, a novel photonic vector signal at frequency (RF) bands generation scheme based on the beating of double single sidebands (SSBs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The double SSBs carry separate constant-or multi-amplitude quadrature-amplitude-modulation vector signals are generated from a single I/Q modulator. By adopting phase and amplitude precoding, different constellations can be generated, such as 3-ary phase-shift keying (PSK), 4-PSK, 7-PSK, 8-PSK, and so on. In this work, 10-Gbaud 7-PSK vector signal generation at 20 GHz enabled by two precoded 4-PSK SSB signals via a single I/Q modulator is theoretically and experimentally investigated. Compared to a single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator or conventional I/Q modulator-based photonic vector signal generation scheme, the spectrum efficiency can be doubled. Differential coding is also implemented at the transmitter side for accurate demodulation of 7-PSK into two 4-PSK signals. The bit-error ratio for 10-Gbaud 7-PSK vector signals can be under hard-decision forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3) after 10 km standard single-mode fiber transmission. Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulated vector signal generation at the W-band, adopting Mach-Zehnder-modulator-based (MZM-based) photonic frequency octupling and phase precoding techniques. The MZM biased at its maximum transmission point is driven by a 12-GHz precoded vector signal, which is generated by MATLAB programming and carries up to 4-GBd QPSK transmitter data. The phase of the 12-GHz precoded vector signal is one eighth that of the regular QPSK symbol to overcome the phase octupling effect accompanying the frequency octupling during square-law photodiode (PD) detection. Only one polarization beam splitter is needed to implement optical polarization diversity. The generated 96-GHz vector signal can carry up to 4-GBd PDM-QPSK data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the generation and reception of the polarization multiplexing vector signal has been recognized by one external intensity modulator at the W-band.

Abstract:Millimeter-wave (mm-wave) has become an attractive technique in the fifth generation (5G) because it meets the demand of explosive increase in data traffic. In this study, we propose and demonstrate the generation of quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM) vector mm-wave signal employing optical orthogonal polarization single sideband (SSB) modulation, which employs a single polarization-division multiplexing Mach-Zehnder modulator (PDM-MZM). Based on our scheme, there is no inter-band crosstalk and inter-polarization signal-signal beat interference (SSBI). In our scheme, the two sub-modulators in PDM-MZM both work within their linear modulation range. After PDM-MZM, the two optical SSB signals are orthogonally polarized. By using an interleaver (IL), the low sideband (LSB) and upper sideband (USB) optical signals in the two polarization directions are extracted respectively. In addition, IL also suppresses the unwanted components of the opposite orthogonally polarized signal. We demonstrate the generation of two independent 28 GHz 12 Gbaud quadrature-phase-shift-keying (QPSK) and 6 Gbaud 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals. 65 km single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission is achieved with the bit-error-rate (BER) below 20% forward-error-correction (FEC) soft-decision threshold of 2.4 x10(-2) without dispersion compensation. We also demonstrate the generation of two independent 28GHz 1 Gbaud 64-QAM signals and transmission SMF over 10-km with the BER below 20% FEC soft-decision threshold of 2.4 x10(-2). Since the LSB and USB signals are on opposite polarization sides, the inter-band crosstalk and the inter-polarization SSBI can be significantly reduced. Because SSB modulation scheme is deployed, our proposed QAM vector signal generation system is robust to fiber dispersion.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a photonic method of generating frequency quadrupling signal for millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless communication system. The frequency quadrupling scheme is based on carriers cancellation within an integrated dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator (DPMZM), thus avoiding the use of an optical filter or an electrical phase shifter. The effects of modulation-depth on the power level of generated mm-wave signal as well as on the system performance of wireless transmission are analyzed theoretically and measured experimentally. In the experiment, transmission of 155Mbps OOK baseband data on a photonic-generated 40GHz mm-wave over a length of 25km standard single-mode fiber (SMF) and 20m wireless distance with error free is successfully demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose a photonic frequency-multiplied vector millimeter-wave (mmW) signal generation scheme based on constant- envelope delta-sigma modulation (CE-DSM). The CE characteristic of phase modulation can easily avoid intensity-dependent nonlinear distortion caused by photonic frequency multiplication. Additionally, combined with one-bit DSM, the in-band signal-to-noise ratio can be dramatically improved, enabling high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) vector mmW signal generation with high spectral efficiency. Experimental results indicate that a 40 GHz four-fold frequency-multiplied 4096-QAM vector mmW signal generation system is successfully accomplished with 15-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) and 1-m wireless transmission, and the bit error ratio (BER) reaches the threshold of 3.8 x 10-3. -3 .

Abstract:We propose a novel method to generate photonic quadrature-phase-shift-keying (QPSK) vector signal by using only one Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). So the amplitude and the phase of the driving radio-frequency (RF) signal should be pre-coded before used to drive the MZM. Turbo equalization is investigated in vector signal system to improve the system transmission performance. We experimentally demonstrate and investigate the transmission performance with rates of 1-Gbaud over 40-km single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission. Our experimental results shows that this concept of the generation of QPSK vector signal can be employed in our transmission system architecture based on Turbo equalization. The received sensitivity of QPSK vector signal with code rate 1/2 and 2/3 Turbo equalization at the bit error rate (BER) of 10−4 after 40km SMF transmission are 4dB and 3dB better than the original QPSK signal, respectively. The experimental results show that the QPSK signal with Turbo equalization has better dispersion compensation and error-correcting ability.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel scheme to generate a high-order QAM W-band mm-wave signal is proposed, which avoids the usage of expensive and power hungry digital-to-analog converter (DAC). We numerically simulate m2-QAM mm-wave signal generation and investigate the influences of phase shift and SNR on the performance of the generated W-band signals. The numerical result shows that both SNR and the modulation order m are important factors which decide the quality of generated vector mm-wave signals. Besides, we experimentally demonstrate 10 Gb/s @80 GHz QPSK signal generation based on photonic-aided frequency quadrupled generation principle, which handles the phase noise issue effectively. Moreover, 10 Gb/s @80 GHz QPSK signal transmission over 1 -km DSF and 1-m wireless link is also achieved. The experiment results indicate that BER can achieve 7% hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3) when the optical power is above-5 dBm. Due to avoiding a bandwidth limited DAC, our proposed W-band QAM vector mm-wave signal generation with a simple structure is promising for the future high-speed 5G ROF-based communication application and beyond.
