Abstract:An ultra-small and broadband polarization splitter is numerically and experimentally demonstrated based on the double-slit interference in a polymer-film-coated double-slit structure. The hybrid slab waveguide (air-polymer-Au) supports both the transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes. The incident beam from the back side can excite these two guided modes of orthogonally polarized states in the hybrid structure. By exploiting the difference slit widths and the large mode birefringence, these two guided modes propagate to the opposite directions along the front metal surface. Moreover, the short interference length broadens the operation bandwidth. Experimentally, a polarization splitter with a lateral dimension of only about 1.6 μm and an operation bandwidth of 50 nm is realized. By designing the double-slit structure in a hybrid strip waveguide, the device dimension can be significant downscaled to about 0.3 × 1.3 μm2. Such an ultra-small and broadband polarization splitter may find important applications in the integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract:Polarization handing devices including polarization beam splitters (PBSs) are playing a pivotal role in polarization-involved applications [1]. Many waveguide PBSs have been demonstrated with various structures. Regarding the design simplicity and fabrication tolerance, the multimode interference (MMI) structure is a good choice to realize PBSs. However, the conventional MMI-based PBS are quite long (10~103 μm) since the polarization dependence of the beat-length of an MMI section is not strong [2].

Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Two novel wide-angle and broadband 2D photonic crystal polarization splitters (PCPS) which are the multilayer wavy films (MWF) structure and arrow-head like structure are designed based on the autocloning method. Plane wave expansion (PWE) method is used to calculate the band structure and explain the reason for the wide-angle and broadband polarization splitting effect. In order to verify the result derived from PWE method, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is employed to test and measure the polarization effect for the MWF structure.

Abstract:Miniaturizing optical devices beyond the diffraction limit is of great importance for high-integration photonic circuits. By directly fabricating a double-slit aperture structure of different sizes in a subwavelength plasmonic waveguide, an ultra-small plasmonic wavelength splitter is realized experimentally. Due to the different slit widths, the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in the opposite directions exhibit anti-phase interferences. As a result, the SPPs excited at different wavelengths can be split to propagate in the opposite directions along the subwavelength plasmonic waveguide. The plasmonic wavelength splitter only occupies a footprint of about 1.4 mu m(2) on the metal surface, and the splitting wavelengths and their separation can be easily varied by adjusting the structural parameters. This provides it with important applications in the areas of the optical modulating, sensing, and computing networks in highly integrated plasmonic circuits. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The miniaturization of polarization beam splitters (PBSs) is vital for ultradense chip-scale photonic integrated circuits. However, the small PBSs based on complex hybrid plasmonic structures exhibit large fabrication difficulties or high insertion losses. Here, by designing a bending multimode plasmonic waveguide, an ultrabroadband on-chip plasmonic PBS with low insertion losses is numerically and experimentally realized. The multimode plasmonic waveguide, consisting of a metal strip with a V-shaped groove on the metal surface, supports the symmetric and antisymmetric surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waveguide modes in nature. Due to the different field confinements of the two SPP waveguide modes, which result in different bending losses, the two incident SPP waveguide modes of orthogonal polarization states are efficiently split in the bending multimode plasmonic waveguide. The numerical simulations show that the operation bandwidth of the proposed PBS is as large as 430 nm because there is no resonance or interference effect in the splitting process. Compared with the complex hybrid plasmonic structure, the simple bending multimode plasmonic waveguide is much easier to fabricate. In the experiment, a broadband (Δλ≈120 nm) and low-insertion-loss (<3 dB with a minimum insertion loss of 0.7 dB) PBS is demonstrated by using the strongly confined waveguide modes as the incident sources in the bending multimode plasmonic waveguide.

Abstract:Composite metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) surface plasmon polariton (SPP) structures are first proposed to realize the ultra-short optical splitters with simplified designs. The operation mechanism is based on the contra-directional coupling achieved in composite plasmonic slot waveguides. In certain cases, the switching function can also be realized. It is further shown that based on the same physical mechanism multi-dielectric-core composite MDM structures could serve as a novel plasmonic waveguide crossover component with low cross talk and high throughput.

Abstract:A submicron asymmetric dielectric-coated metal slit with a Fabry–Perot (FP) nano-resonator is experimentally fabricated to realize an ultra-small on-chip polarization splitter. In the hybrid plasmonic structure, both of the transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) modes can be efficiently generated on the front metal surface. Based on the quite different resonant conditions and the different field confinements of the two orthogonal polarization modes in the FP resonator, the TM and TE modes are generated to propagate in the opposite directions along the metal surface. In this device, there are no coupling waveguide regions, and the excitation and the splitting of the TE and TM modes are integrated into the same asymmetric nano-slit. This considerably shrinks the device dimension to only about 850 nm (about one wavelength). In such a submicron asymmetric slit, the measured extinction ratios for the two opposite directions can reach up to (ηL/ηR)TM ≈ 1:14 and (ηL/ηR)TE ≈ 11:1 at λ = 820 nm. This on-chip submicron polarization splitter is of importance in highly integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract:An ultracompact and silicon-on-insulator-compatible polarization splitter (PS) is proposed by utilizing asymmetric directional coupling between a hybrid plasmonic waveguide and a strip dielectric waveguide. Owing to the plasmon-assisted asymmetry, birefringence is highly enhanced. Polarization splitting can be realized by strong coupling of one polarization while the other polarization is phase-mismatched. As an example, a PS based on strong TM coupling is demonstrated at the wavelength of 1.55 μm with a coupling length of 4.13 μm. Extinction ratios are 20.9 and 16.4 dB for TM and TE polarizations, respectively. The device is also broadband and fabrication-tolerant.

Abstract:In this paper, an on-chip silicon polarization beam splitter using a particle-swarm-optimized counter-tapered directional coupler is proposed, designed, and fabricated. The coupling length of the proposed device is only 5 µm. As the waveguide width variation ΔW increases from -20 to 20 nm, the simulated polarization extinction ratio larger than 18.67 dB and the corresponding insertion loss lower than 0.17 dB are achieved. Measured experimental results achieved insertion loss <0.50 dB, TE polarization extinction between 16.68 to 31.87 dB, TM polarization extinction between 17.78 to 31.13 dB, over the wavelength range 1525 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:A compact and ultrabroadband polarization beam splitter (PBS) utilizing a hybrid plasmonic Y-branch (HPYB) on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform is proposed and numerically demonstrated. The HPYB consists of a vertical hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) and a horizontal HPW formed by silicon (Si) and silver (Ag) strip waveguides sandwiched with a silicon dioxide (SiO2) layer, in which the vertical and horizontal hybrid plasmonic modes (HPMs) are excited by the input transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes, respectively. The HPMs are split into different ports and coupled back to TE and TM modes to implement the polarization splitting function. A simplified and compact HPYB is robust for the HPMs' generation. The structure is wavelength insensitive since the HPMs' excitation is weakly correlated to the optical wavelengths. The simulation results show that the HPYB-based PBS has a compact footprint of $5 \times 1.8\ \mu\text{m}^2$ and an ultralarge working bandwidth of 285 nm, with the polarization crosstalk <; -10 dB and the worst-case TE (TM) mode insertion loss of -1.53 (-2.35) dB. The device also exhibits a large fabrication tolerance of 210-nm variation (from -100 to 110 nm) to the waveguide width for both polarizations.

Abstract:A novel ultra-compact polarization rotator (PR) based on surface plasmon polaritons waveguide is proposed. The total footprint of the proposed device is only 0.44μm × 2.55μm. Simulations with 3D-FDTD show that the PR has a broad bandwidth (1.4μm~1.7μm) with extinction ratios larger than 10dB. The insertion losses are less than 1dB during the wavelength range of 1450nm~1650nm.

Abstract:In this paper, a polarization beam splitter using a pixelated directional coupler is proposed, designed, and experimentally demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. According to the phase matching, structural parameters for the coupling region consisting of a straight waveguide and a pixelated waveguide are carefully selected by using direct-binary-search optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, and thus the input fundamental transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes can be effectively separated from each other in an ultra-compact coupling length. The coupling length of our designed device is only 6 pm. Experimental results reveal that, the measured polarization extinction ratio is greater than 14.22 dB and the corresponding insertion loss is smaller than 1.36 dB within a bandwidth from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-electric polarization, while the measured polarization extinction ratio and insertion loss are respectively larger than 14.47 dB and lower than 1.53 dB from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-magnetic polarization.
Structurally-tolerant Vertical Directional Coupling Between Metal-Insulator-metal Plasmonic Waveguide and Silicon Dielectric Waveguide

Abstract:Vertical directional coupling between a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) plasmonic waveguide and a conventional dielectric waveguide is investigated. The coupling length, extinction ratio, insertion loss and coupling efficiency of the hybrid coupler are analyzed. As an example, when the separation between the two waveguides is 250 nm, a maximum coupling efficiency of 73%, an insertion loss of -1.4 dB and an extinction ratio of 16 dB can be achieved at a coupling length of 4.5 microm at 1.55 microm wavelength. A particular feature of this hybrid coupler is that it is highly tolerant to the structural parameters of the plasmonic waveguide and the misalignment between the two waveguides. The performance of this hybrid coupler as a TM polarizer is also analyzed and a maximum extinction ratio of 44 dB and an insertion loss of -0.18 dB can be obtained. The application of this hybrid coupler includes the signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits and the polarization control between TE and TM modes. In addition, it provides an approach for efficiently exciting MIM plasmonic modes with conventional dielectric modes.

Abstract:A compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a three-waveguide plasmonic directional coupler was proposed and modeled. The directional coupler comprised two common silicon-on-insulator (SOI) ridge waveguides, with a metal-capped plasmonic SOI waveguide sandwiched between them. The geometrical structure of the three-waveguide directional coupled waveguide was optimized, realizing the phase matching of transverse magnetic (TM) modes but not of transverse electric (TE) modes. The structure and performance of the PBS was optimized using a finite-difference time-domain method. Simulation results showed that the birefringence comparison of TE and TM modes in a hybrid plasmonic waveguide was enhanced using a dielectric loading waveguide to obtain an ultra-compact structure; the final optimized coupling length of the device was 6.1 μm. At the center wavelength of 1.55 μm, the polarization extinction ratio of the TE and TM modes was 34.57 dB and 23.24 dB, and the insertion loss was 0.01 dB and 0.13 dB, respectively.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling chirality are important because of its ubiquity in nature. In recent years, we have witnessed the rapid development of chiral metamaterials with exceptional light-manipulating capabilities. Here, we present a design for photonic heterostructures in chiral photonics, demonstrating that photonic heterostructures stacked from achiral metasurfaces can create distinctive chiroptical functionalities. Analyses based on the symmetry group and microscopic dipolar interactions at two-dimensional boundaries reveal the implicit mechanism of the interlayer coupling in photonic heterostructures. By flip stacking, the photonic heterostructure gives rise to an asymmetric chiral phase from achiral composites, and hence, provides the full spin-flipped scattering of incident photons. Incident electromagnetic waves with arbitrary polarization orientations can be efficiently separated into two orthogonal circularly polarized ones with orthogonal trajectories, leading to an ideal circular beam splitter. This effect is experimentally demonstrated at microwave frequencies via the measurement of a scattering matrix. Due to its generality and scalability, we expect the methodology of photonic heterostructure might open up an alternative pathway for exploring intriguing and advanced metamaterials over a broad wavelength range.
Compact Low-Birefringence Polarization Beam Splitter Using Vertical-Dual-slot Waveguides in Silicon Carbide Integrated Platforms

Abstract:The polarization beam splitter is a key component for polarization manipulation in photonic integrated circuits,but it is challenging to design for low-refractive-index optical materials,due to the low birefringence of the wave-guides.We propose what we believe is a novel compact vertical-dual-slot waveguide-based coupling scheme for silicon carbide,enabling efficient low-birefringence polarization splitting by extensively modulating the trans-verse-magnetic mode distribution.We numerically and experimentally demonstrate the device in the 4H-silicon-carbide-on-insulator integrated platform,with a small footprint of 2.2 μm×15 μm.The device,easy to fabricate via a single lithography process as other components on the chip,exhibits low insertion loss of＜0.71 dB and＜0.51 dB for the transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic polarized light,respectively,and polarization extinction ratio of＞13 dB,over 80 nm wavelength range.

Abstract:The real part of the effective index is enhanced in a metal–insulator–metal (MIM) surface plasmon waveguide when the thickness of the insulator is quite small and this mechanism can be utilized to achieve some ultra-compact photonic devices. The mode properties of an index-guided multimode plasmonic waveguide of subwavelength size are analyzed and the multimode interference (MMI) effect is investigated. A novel ultra-compact MMI power splitter, with the transverse size less than 1/3 of the free space wavelength, is proposed.

Abstract:The plasmonic waveguide is a key element in the nanophotonic devices and highly integrated photonic circuits. The single-mode waveguide greatly limits the degrees of freedom in the filed manipulating and information encoding. Here, a multimode metallic double-strip waveguide, comprising two metallic strips placed on the metal substrate, is proposed to realize field manipulating and polarization splitting. This waveguide design is quite different from that of the previous waveguides. As a result, both of the symmetric and the antisymmetric surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) modes supported by the proposed waveguide have long propagation lengths (ten times greater than the plasmon wavelengths). Moreover, the field distributions of the two SPP modes are located in different areas in the metallic double-strip waveguide. Hence, these two SPP modes can be easily manipulated independently. The metallic double-strip waveguide is fabricated on the metal film and is then measured. As an example, the polarization manipulation is demonstrated in the experiment with a structure size as small as 0.7 x 4.5 mu m(2). The multimode metallic double-strip waveguide with long propagation lengths and different field distributions provides more degrees of freedom to manipulate fields and encode information, and thus it has important applications in multifunctional nanophotonic devices and integrated photonic circuits.
