Abstract:Photon subtraction can enhance the performance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV QKD). However, the enhancement effect will be reduced by the imperfections of practical devices, especially the limited efficiency of a single-photon detector. In this paper, we propose a non-Gaussian postselection method to emulate the photon substraction used in coherent-state CV QKD protocols. The virtual photon subtraction not only can avoid the complexity and imperfections of a practical photon-subtraction operation, which extends the secure transmission distance as the ideal case does, but also can be adjusted flexibly according to the channel parameters to optimize the performance. Furthermore, our preliminary tests on the information reconciliation suggest that in the low signal-to-noise ratio regime, the performance of reconciliating the postselected non-Gaussian data is better than that of the Gaussian data, which implies the feasibility of implementing this method practically.

Abstract:We propose a method to improve the performance of two-way continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol by virtual photon subtraction. The virtual photon subtraction implemented via non-Gaussian post-selection not only enhances the entanglement of two-mode squeezed vacuum state but also has advantages in simplifying physical operation and promoting efficiency. In two-way protocol, virtual photon subtraction could be applied on two sources independently. Numerical simulations show that the optimal performance of renovated two-way protocol is obtained with photon subtraction only used by Alice. The transmission distance and tolerable excess noise are improved by using the virtual photon subtraction with appropriate parameters. Moreover, the tolerable excess noise maintains a high value with the increase in distance so that the robustness of two-way continuous-variable quantum key distribution system is significantly improved, especially at long transmission distance.

Abstract:The method of improving the performance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocols by post-selection has been recently proposed and verified. In continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI QKD) protocols, the measurement results are obtained from untrusted third party Charlie. There is still not an effective method of improving CV-MDI QKD by the post-selection with untrusted measurement. We propose a method to improve the performance of coherent-state CV-MDI QKD protocol by non-Gaussian post-selection. The non-Gaussian post-selection of transmitted data is equivalent to an ideal photon subtraction on the two-mode squeezed vacuum state, which is favorable to enhance the performance of CV-MDI QKD. In CV-MDI QKD protocol with non-Gaussian post-selection, two users select their own data independently. We demonstrate that the optimal performance of the renovated CV-MDI QKD protocol is obtained with the transmitted data only selected by Alice. By setting appropriate parameters of the non-Gaussian post-selection, the secret key rate and tolerable excess noise are both improved at long transmission distance. The method provides an effective optimization scheme for the application of CV-MDI QKD protocols.

Abstract:<p>Aiming at the problems of low secret key rate, short transmission distance and low detection efficiency of continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol, we propose a measurement-device-independent continuous-variable quantum key distribution(MDI-CVQKD) protocol based on photon subtraction and noiseless linear amplifiers (NLA). The protocol uses non-Gaussian operation, in particular, photon subtraction to improve the entanglement between quantum states, and NLA is used to amplify quantum states to compensate for channel attenuation. In this paper, the principle of the protocol is analyzed theoretically, and the relationship between the secret key rate and the secure transmission distance is derived through the covariance matrix between quantum states. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol can not only improve the entanglement between quantum states, but also extend the transmission distance of key distribution and improve the performance of key distribution system.</p>

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) with continuous variable (CV) is an effective method for achieving the high key rate, but is also limited to a short transmission distance. To overcome this limitation, some solutions have been proposed, including non-Gaussian operations, such as photon addition and photon subtraction using ideal photon source and number-resolving detection. Here we consider the effect of non-Gaussian operation for realistic photon source and ideal on-off photon detection. In the realistic case, it is shown that the performance of CVQKD can not be improved by both photon-subtraction/addition on the right side before the entangled source reaches the channel and photon-subtraction on the left side preceding the entangled source to the sender Alice before performing heterodyne detection, but be enhanced by the photon addition on the left side in a long distance case. These results may provide a useful reference for quantum information with continuous variable.

Abstract:It has been found that non-Gaussian operations can be applied to increase and distill entanglement between Gaussian entangled states. We show the successful use of the non-Gaussian operation, in particular, photon subtraction operation, on the continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI-QKD) protocol. The proposed method can be implemented based on existing technologies. Security analysis shows that the photon subtraction operation can remarkably increase the maximal transmission distance of the CV-MDI-QKD protocol, which precisely make up for the shortcoming of the original CV-MDI-QKD protocol, and one-photon subtraction operation has the best performance. Moreover, the proposed protocol provides a feasible method for the experimental implementation of the CV-MDI-QKD protocol.

Abstract:Abstract Quantum catalysis is a feasible approach to increase the performance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD), involving the special zero-photon catalysis (ZPC) operation. However, in the practical point of view, the improvement effect of this operation will be limited by the imperfection of the photon detector. In this paper, we show that the ZPC operation at the sender can be simulated by a post-selection method without implementing it in practical devices. While performing this virtual version of ZPC in CVQKD, we can not only reach the ideal case of its practical implementation with minimal hardware requirement, but also keep the benefit of Gaussian security proofs. Based on Gaussian modulated coherent state protocols with achievable parameters, we enhance the security of the proposed scheme from the asymptotical case to the finite-size scenario and composable framework. Simulation results show that similar to the asymptotical case, both the maximal transmission distance and the tolerable excess noise of virtual ZPC-involved CVQKD outperform the original scheme and the scheme using virtual photon subtraction while considering finite-size effect and composable security. In addition, the virtual ZPC-involved CVQKD can tolerate a higher imperfection of the detector, enabling its practical implementation of the CVQKD system with state-of-the-art technology.

Abstract:We present a discretely modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution system in free space by using strong coherent states. The amplitude noise in the laser source is suppressed to the shot-noise limit by using a mode cleaner combined with a frequency shift technique. Also, it is proven that the phase noise in the source has no impact on the final secret key rate. In order to increase the encoding rate, we use broadband homodyne detectors and the no-switching protocol. In a realistic model, we establish a secret key rate of 46.8 kbits/s against collective attacks at an encoding rate of 10MHz for a 90% channel loss when the modulation variance is optimal.
High Efficient Secret Key Distillation for Long Distance Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution

Abstract:The continuous variable quantum key distribution is expected to provide high secret key rate without single photon source and detector, but the lack of the secure and effective key distillation method makes it unpractical. Here, we present a secure single-bit-reverse-reconciliation protocol combined with secret information concentration and post-selection, which can distill the secret key with high efficiency and low computational complexity. The simulation results show that this protocol can provide high secret key rate even when the transmission fiber is longer than 150km, which may make the continuous variable scheme to outvie the single photon one.

Abstract:Non-Gaussian modulation can improve the performance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV QKD). For Gaussian-modulated coherent-state CV QKD, photon subtraction can realize non-Gaussian modulation, which can be equivalently implemented by non-Gaussian postselection. However, non-Gaussian reconciliation has not been deeply researched, which is one of the key technologies in CV QKD. In this paper, we propose a non-Gaussian reconciliation method to obtain identical keys from non-Gaussian data. Multidimensional reconciliation and multiedge-type low-density parity-check codes (MET LDPC) are used in a non-Gaussian reconciliation scheme, where the layered belief propagation decoding algorithm of MET LDPC codes is used to reduce the decoding complexity. Furthermore, we compare the error-correction performance of Gaussian data and non-Gaussian data. The results show that the error-correction performance of non-Gaussian data is better than Gaussian data, where the frame error rate can be reduced by 50 % for code rate 0.1 at SNR of 0.1554 and the average iteration number can be reduced by 25 %. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.19.054084 © 2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:A parametric down-conversion (PDC) source can be used as either a triggered single-photon source or an entangled-photon source in quantum key distribution (QKD). The triggering PDC QKD has already been studied in the literature. On the other hand, a model and a post-processing protocol for the entanglement PDC QKD are still missing. We fill in this important gap by proposing such a model and a post-processing protocol for the entanglement PDC QKD. Although the PDC model is proposed to study the entanglement-based QKD, we emphasize that our generic model may also be useful for other non-QKD experiments involving a PDC source. Since an entangled PDC source is a basis-independent source, we apply Koashi and Preskill's security analysis to the entanglement PDC QKD. We also investigate the entanglement PDC QKD with two-way classical communications. We find that the recurrence scheme increases the key rate and the Gottesman-Lo protocol helps tolerate higher channel losses. By simulating a recent 144-km open-air PDC experiment, we compare three implementations: entanglement PDC QKD, triggering PDC QKD, and coherent-state QKD. The simulation result suggests that the entanglement PDC QKD can tolerate higher channel losses than the coherent-state QKD. The coherent-state QKD with decoy states is able to achieve highest key rate in the low- and medium-loss regions. By applying the Gottesman-Lo two-way post-processing protocol, the entanglement PDC QKD can tolerate up to 70 dB combined channel losses (35 dB for each channel) provided that the PDC source is placed in between Alice and Bob. After considering statistical fluctuations, the PDC setup can tolerate up to 53 dB channel losses.

Abstract:The photon statistics of a quantum-key-distribution (QKD) source are crucial for security analysis. We propose a practical method, with only a beam splitter and a photodetector, to monitor the photon statistics of a QKD source. By implementing in a plug and play QKD system, we show that the method is highly practical. The final secure key rate is 52 bit/s, compared to 78 bit/s when the source is treated as a trusted source.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme for continuous variable quantum key distribution(CV-QKD) using the subcarrier multiplexing technique which was employed in microwave photonics. This scheme allows to distribute N channels independent Gaussian modulated CV-QKD in parallel with one laser source and several phase modulators. We analyze the influence of nonlinear signal mixing and the security in the asymptotic limit. Results indicate that by using this multiplexing technique, each channel will be introduced a non-Gaussian extra source noise, resulting slightly short of the maximum transmission distance, while the total secret key rate can be considerably increased. This scheme could also be used for key distribution for multi-users and combined with the WDM devices it has the potential to construct a CV-QKD network.

Abstract:It has been proven in the literature that the main technological factors limiting the communication rates of quantum cryptography systems by single photon are mainly related to the choice of the encoding method. In fact, the efficiency of the used sources is very limited, at best of the order of a few percent for the single photon sources and the photon counters can not be operated beyond a certain speed and with a low order of detection efficiency. In order to overcome partially these drawbacks, it is advantageous to use continuous quantum states as an alternative to standard encodings based on quantum qubits. In this context, we propose a new reconciliation method based on Turbo codes. Our theoretical model assumptions are supported by experimental results. Indeed, our method leads to a significant improvement of the protocol security and a large decrease of the QBER. The gain is obtained with a reasonable complexity increase. Also, the novelty of our work is that it tested the reconciliation method on a real photonic system under VPItransmissionMaker.

Abstract:To improve the performance of a quantum-key-distribution (QKD) system, high speed, low dark count single photon detectors (or low-noise homodyne detectors) are required. However, in practice, a fast detector is usually noisy. Here, we propose a dual-detector method to improve the performance of a practical QKD system with realistic detectors: the legitimate receiver randomly uses either a fast (but noisy) detector or a quiet (but slow) detector to measure the incoming quantum signals. The measurement results from the quiet detector can be used to bound the eavesdropper's information, while the measurement results from the fast detector are used to generate a secure key. We apply this idea to various QKD protocols. Simulation results demonstrate significant improvements of the secure key rate in the lower loss regime in both Bennett-Brassard 1984 (BB84) protocol with ideal single photon source and Gaussian-modulated coherent states protocol; while for decoy-state BB84 protocol with weak coherent source, the improvement is moderate. We also discuss various practical issues in implementing the dual-detector scheme.

Abstract:We propose a practical decoy state method with heralded single photon source for quantum key distribution (QKD). In the protocol, 3 intensities are used and one can estimate the fraction of single-photon counts. The final key rate over transmission distance is simulated under various parameter sets. Due to the lower dark count than that of a coherent state, it is shown that a 3-intensity decoy-state QKD with a heralded source can work for a longer distance than that of a coherent state.

Abstract:Photon subtraction (PS), due to its feasibility in physical implementation, has been widely utilized in Gaussian entanglement distillation. However, in this paper, we will show that photon addition (PA) can be employed to provide an additional enhancement in both the quality of distilled entanglement and the success probability if the input state is a weak two-mode squeezed vacuum state. Moreover, compared with biside PS, the distillation probability gains a O(1/lambda(2)) improvement, which increases rapidly when lambda << 1. Our PA-based scheme is obtained first by single-photon injection and later by vacuum state projection. The performance of PA in the presence of both an approximated single photon and amplitude-damping noise has been analyzed. Our result sheds more light on the indispensable non-Gaussian ingredients in Gaussian-state distillation and could be of great use in developing more efficient distillation schemes. Finally, the sensitivity of the PA scheme to inefficient photon detection has also been investigated.
Experimental passive state preparation for continuous variable quantum communications

Abstract:In the Gaussian-modulated coherent state quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol, the sender first generates Gaussian distributed random numbers and then encodes them on weak laser pulses actively by performing amplitude and phase modulations. Recently, an equivalent passive QKD scheme was proposed by exploring the intrinsic field fluctuations of a thermal source [B. Qi, P. G. Evans, and W. P. Grice, Phys. Rev. A 97, 012317 (2018)]. This passive QKD scheme is especially appealing for chip-scale implementation since no active modulations are required. In this paper, we conduct an experimental study of the passively encoded QKD scheme using an off-the-shelf amplified spontaneous emission source operated in continuous-wave mode. Our results show that the excess noise introduced by the passive state preparation scheme can be effectively suppressed by applying optical attenuation and secure key could be generated over metro-area distances.

Surpassing the loss-noise robustness trade-off in quantum key distribution

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) offers a theoretically secure method to share secret keys, yet practical implementations face challenges due to noise and loss over long-distance channels. Traditional QKD protocols require extensive noise compensation, hindering their industrial scalability and lowering the achievable key rates. Alternative protocols encode logical qubits in noise-resilient states, but at the cost of using many physical qubits, increasing susceptibility to loss and limiting transmission distance. In this work, we introduce a logical qubit encoding that uses antisymmetric Bell-states in the continuous photonic degrees of freedom, frequency and time. By leveraging the continuous space, we overcome this noise-loss robustness trade-off by minimising the number of photons per logical qubit, whilst optimising the encoding resilience over noise fluctuations. We analyse the security of our encoding and demonstrate its robustness compared to existing state-of-the-art protocols. This approach provides a path towards scalable, efficient QKD implementations under realistic noise conditions.
