Abstract:The general equivalence theory (GET) and the superhomogenization method (SPH) are widely used for equivalence in the standard two-step reactor physics calculation. GET has behaved well in light water reactor calculation via nodal reactor analysis methods. The SPH was brought up again lately to satisfy the need of accurate pin-by-pin core calculations. However, both of the classical methods have their limitations. The super equivalence method (SPE) is proposed in the paper as an attempt to preserve the surface current, the reaction rates and the reactivity. It enhances the good property of the SPH method through reaction rates based normalization. The concept of pin discontinuity factors are utilized to preserve the surface current, which is the basic idea in the GET technique. However, the pin discontinuity factors are merged into the homogenized cross sections and diffusion coefficients, thus no additional homogenization parameters are needed in the succedent reactor core calculation. The eigenvalue preservation is performed after the reaction rate and surface current have been preserved, resulting in reduced errors of reactivity: The SPE has been implemented into the Monte Carlo method based homogenization code MCMC, as part of RMC Program, under developed in Tsinghua University. The C5G7 benchmark problem have been carried out to test the SPE. The results show that the SPE method not only suits for the equivalence in Monte Carlo based homogenization but also provides improved accuracy compared to the traditional GET or SPH method.

Abstract:Based on the general equivalence theory (GET) and the superhomogenization method (SPH), the super equivalence method (SPE) has been proposed to preserve the surface current, the reaction rates and the lattice reactivity, using the implicit equivalence factors. SPE has been implemented into the Monte Carlo method based homogenization code MCMC. The C5G7 benchmark problem has been calculated to verify the SPE method. The results show that the SPE method provides improved accuracy and adaptation compared to the traditional GET and SPH methods.

Abstract:A two-step calculation scheme may be one of the feasible ways if we intend to do core simulations with Monte Carlo method, i.e., assembly level calculations with Monte Carlo method (MCNP) are done at first, the group constants are tallied at the same time, and then the core level simulations are performed using these group constants. In this paper, the group constants generation method via Monte Carlo is studied, and an equivalent homogenization theory has been applied to improve the results. The numerical calculation results illustrate that the group constants generation method via Monte Carlo is practicable, which can improve the efficiency of core simulations while ensuring the accuracy.

Abstract:For solving higher dimensional diffusion equations with an inhomogeneous diffusion coefficient, Monte Carlo (MC) techniques are considered to be more effective than other algorithms, such as finite element method or finite difference method. The inhomogeneity of diffusion coefficient strongly limits the use of different numerical techniques. For better convergence, methods with higher orders have been kept forward to allow MC codes with large step size. The main focus of this work is to look for operators that can produce converging results for large step sizes. As a first step, our comparative analysis has been applied to a general stochastic problem. Subsequently, our formulization is applied to the problem of pitch angle scattering resulting from Coulomb collisions of charge particles in the toroidal devices.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and analyze a new stochastic homogenization method for diffusion equations with random and fast oscillatory coefficients. In the proposed method, the homogenized solutions are sought through a two-stage procedure. In the first stage, the original oscillatory diffusion equation is approximated, for each fixed random sample w, by a spatially homogenized diffusion equation with piecewise constant coefficients, resulting a random diffusion equation. In the second stage, the resulted random diffusion equation is approximated and computed by using an efficient multi-modes Monte Carlo method which only requires to solve a diffusion equation with a constant diffusion coefficient and a random right-hand side. The main advantage of the proposed method is that it separates the computational difficulty caused by the spatial fast oscillation of the solution and that caused by the randomness of the solution, so they can be overcome separately using different strategies. The convergence of the solution of the spatially homogenized equation (from the first stage) to the solution of the original random diffusion equation is established and the optimal rate of convergence is also obtained for the proposed multi-modes Monte Carlo method. Numerical experiments on some benchmark test problems for random composite materials are also presented to gauge the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed two-stage stochastic homogenization method.

Abstract:The efficiency of the standard two-step reactor physics calculation relies on the accuracy of multi-group constants from the assembly-level homogenization process.In contrast to the traditional deterministic methods,generating the homogenization cross sections via Monte Carlo method overcomes the difficulties in geometry and treats energy in continuum,thus provides more accuracy parameters.Besides,the same code and data bank can be used for a wide range of applications,resulting in the versatility using Monte Carlo codes for homogenization.As the first stage to realize Monte Carlo based lattice homogenization,the track length scheme is used as the foundation of cross section generation,which is straight forward.The scattering matrix and Legendre components,however,require special techniques.The Scattering Event method was proposed to solve the problem.There are no continuous energy counterparts in the Monte Carlo calculation for neutron diffusion coefficients.P1 cross sections were used to calculate the diffusion coefficients for diffusion reactor simulator codes.BN theory is applied to take the leakage effect into account when the infinite lattice of identical symmetric motives is assumed.The MCMC code was developed and the code was applied in four assembly configurations to assess the accuracy and the applicability.At core-level,A PWR prototype core is examined.The results show that the Monte Carlo based multi-group constants behave well in average.The method could be applied to complicated configuration nuclear reactor core to gain higher accuracy.
One-step Monte Carlo Global Homogenization Based on RMC Code

Abstract:Due to the limitation of the computers, the conventional homogenization method is based on many assumptions and approximations, and some tough problems such as energy spectrum and boundary condition are faced. To deal with those problems, the Monte Carlo global homogenization is adopted. The Reactor Monte Carlo code RMC is used to study the global homogenization method, and the one-step global homogenization method is proposed. The superimposed mesh geometry is also used to divide the physical models, leading to better geometric flexibility. A set of multigroup homogenization cross sections is online generated for each mesh under the real neutron energy spectrum and boundary condition, the cross sections are adjusted by the superhomogenization method, and no leakage correction is required. During the process of superhomogenization, the author-developed reactor core program NLSP3 is used for global calculation, so the global flux distribution and equivalent homogenization cross sections could be solved simultaneously. Meanwhile, the calculated homogenization cross section could accurately reconstruct the non-homogenization flux distribution and could also be used for fine calculation. This one-step global homogenization method was tested by a PWR assembly and a small reactor model, and the results show the validity.

Abstract:The heterogeneous multi-scale method, a general framework for efficient numerical modeling of problems with multi-scales [15], is applied to a large variety of homogenization problems. These problems can be either linear or nonlinear, periodic or non-periodic, stationary or dynamic. Stability and accuracy issues are analyzed along the lines of the general principles outlined in [15]. Strategies for obtaining the microstructural information are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a numerical method, the finite difference heterogeneous multi-scale method (FD-HMM), for solving multi-scale parabolic problems. Based on the framework introduced in [Commun. Math. Sci. 1 (1) 87], the numerical method relies on the use of two different schemes for the original equation, at different grid level which allows to give numerical results at a much lower cost than solving the original equations. We describe the strategy for constructing such a method, discuss generalization for cases with time dependency, random correlated coefficients, nonconservative form and implementation issues. Finally, the new method is illustrated with several test examples.

Abstract:A comprehensive analysis is presented for the heterogeneous multiscale method (HMM for short) applied to various elliptic homogenization problems. These problems can be either linear or nonlinear, with deterministic or random coefficients. In most cases considered, optimal estimates are proved for the error between the HMM solutions and the homogenized solutions. Strategies for retrieving the microstructural information from the HMM solutions are discussed and analyzed.

Abstract:We prove the uniform convergence of the geometric multigrid V-cycle for hybrid high-order (HHO) and other discontinuous skeletal methods. Our results generalize previously established results for HDG methods, and our multigrid method uses standard smoothers and local solvers that are bounded, convergent, and consistent. We use a weak version of elliptic regularity in our proofs. Numerical experiments confirm our theoretical results.

Abstract:Asymptotic expansion based homogenization has been widely used to predict the effective macroscopic properties of periodic unit cells (PUCs). In this work, we show that the homogenization process can be done in a much more elegant manner for both continuum and discrete PUCs by taking advantage of the Cauchy–Born's hypothesis, which is a widely used rule in the area of solid physics to relate the position of the atoms in a crystal lattice and the overall strain of the medium. It is shown that in the proposed method, the derivation process of the effective elasticity tensor is quite easy and can rely entirely on commercial CAE software (e.g., ANSYS, ABAQUS, etc.) to accomplish the homogenization task. In detail, after the discretization of the unit cell with finite elements, one only needs to apply affine boundary conditions at the exterior boundaries of the unit cell and then call the FEA solver to find the static displacement field under such affine boundary conditions. The entries of the elasticity tensor can then be expressed using the stain energy of the unit cell. After deriving the sensitivity information of the Cauchy–Born hypothesis based homogenization process, the inverse homogenization process, which attempts to find the optimal layout exhibiting pre-determined desirable material properties, can be implemented in a straightforward way as well. Some numerical examples are tested and compared with the results in the literature. It is showed that the results of both the homogenization and inverse homogenization examples obtained by our method agree very well with the ones in the literature, demonstrating the validity of the Cauchy–Born hypothesis based numerical homogenization method.

A Simple Collocation-Type Approach to Numerical Stochastic Homogenization

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel collocation-type numerical stochastic homogenization method for prototypical stochastic homogenization problems with random coefficient fields of small correlation lengths. The presented method is based on a recently introduced localization technique that enforces a super-exponential decay of the basis functions relative to the underlying coarse mesh, resulting in considerable computational savings during the sampling phase. More generally, the collocation-type structure offers a particularly simple and computationally efficient construction in the stochastic setting with minimized communication between the patches where the basis functions of the method are computed. An error analysis that bridges numerical homogenization and the quantitative theory of stochastic homogenization is performed. In a series of numerical experiments, we study the effect of the correlation length and the discretization parameters on the approximation quality of the method.

Abstract:Dispersion fuel is used in high-temperature reactors (HTRs) and some other advanced reactors. It contains a stochastic mixture of microsphere fuel grains or burnable poison grains embedded in a matrix material, which leads to the so-called double heterogeneity problem in the neutron transport calculation. This work investigates an equivalent homogenization method to deal with the stochastic media. In this method, the stochastic media are transformed to a homogenized material by introducing spatial selfshielding factors and preserving first-collision probabilities. A transmission model is proposed to calculate the first-collision probabilities and the self-shielding factors. In addition, the method is extended to treat the stochastic media with multitype grains. The applicability and correction techniques for the proposed method are discussed. The proposed method has been implemented in a lattice physics code named XPZ for HTRs. Numerical results are presented for typical HTR fuel pebbles and are validated against Monte Carlo solutions. It is concluded that the proposed equivalent homogenization method is promising for treating the double-heterogeneity problem and can be conveniently implemented in existing lattice physics codes.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss a general framework for multicontinuum homogenization. Multicontinuum models are widely used in many applications and some derivations for these models are established. In these models, several macroscopic variables at each macroscale point are defined and the resulting multicontinuum equations are formulated. In this paper, we propose a general formulation and associated ingredients that allow performing multicontinuum homogenization. Our derivation consists of several main parts. In the first part, we propose a general expansion, where the solution is expressed via the product of multiple macro variables and associated cell problems. The second part consists of formulating the cell problems. The cell problems are formulated as saddle point problems with constraints for each continua. Defining the continua via test functions, we set the constraints as an integral representation. Finally, substituting the expansion to the original system, we obtain multicontinuum systems. We present an application to the mixed formulation of elliptic equations. This is a challenging system as the system does not have symmetry. We discuss the local problems and various macroscale representations for the solution and its gradient. Using various order approximations, one can obtain different systems of equations. We discuss the applicability of multicontinuum homogenization and relate this to high contrast in the cell problem. Numerical results are presented.

Abstract:The aim of the paper is to recover some results of Cardaliaguet-Nolen-Souganidis in \cite{CNS} and Xin-Yu in \cite{XY} about the homogenization of the G--equation, using different and simpler techniques. The main mathematical issue is the lack of coercivity of the Hamiltonians. In our approach we consider a multivalued dynamics without periodic invariants sets, a family of intrinsic distances and perform an approximation by a sequence of coercive Hamiltonians.

Some convergence analysis for multicontinuum homogenization

Abstract:In this paper, we provide an analysis of a recently proposed multicontinuum homogenization technique. The analysis differs from those used in classical homogenization methods for several reasons. First, the cell problems in multicontinuum homogenization use constraint problems and can not be directly substituted into the differential operator. Secondly, the problem contains high contrast that remains in the homogenized problem. The homogenized problem averages the microstructure while containing the small parameter. In this analysis, we first based on our previous techniques, CEM-GMsFEM, to define a CEM-downscaling operator that maps the multicontinuum quantities to an approximated microscopic solution. Following the regularity assumption of the multicontinuum quantities, we construct a downscaling operator and the homogenized multicontinuum equations using the information of linear approximation of the multicontinuum quantities. The error analysis is given by the residual estimate of the homogenized equations and the well-posedness assumption of the homogenized equations.

Abstract:This work provides a unified treatment of arbitrary kinds of microscopic boundary conditions usually considered in the multi-scale computational homogenization method for nonlinear multi-physics problems. An efficient procedure is developed to enforce the multi-point linear constraints arising from the microscopic boundary condition either by the direct constraint elimination or by the Lagrange multiplier elimination methods. The macroscopic tangent operators are computed in an efficient way from a multiple right hand sides linear system whose left hand side matrix is the stiffness matrix of the microscopic linearized system at the converged solution. The number of vectors at the right hand side is equal to the number of the macroscopic kinematic variables used to formulate the microscopic boundary condition. As the resolution of the microscopic linearized system often follows a direct factorization procedure, the computation of the macroscopic tangent operators is then performed using this factorized matrix at a reduced computational time.

Numerical homogenization of spatial network models

Abstract:We present and analyze a methodology for numerical homogenization of spatial networks, modelling e.g. diffusion processes and deformation of mechanical structures. The aim is to construct an accurate coarse model of the network. By solving decoupled problems on local subgraphs we construct a low dimensional subspace of the solution space with good approximation properties. The coarse model of the network is expressed by a Galerkin formulation and can be used to perform simulations with different source and boundary data at a low computational cost. We prove optimal convergence of the proposed method under mild assumptions on the homogeneity, connectivity, and locality of the network on the coarse scale. The theoretical findings are numerically confirmed for both scalar-valued (heat conduction) and vector-valued (structural) models.
