Abstract:The angular non-critical phase-matching (A-NCPM) second-harmonic-generation (SHG) properties of RE1xRE21−xCOB (RE1, RE2 = Y, Gd, La, Tm, Sm, and Nd) type mixed crystals including NCPM wavelength and conversion efficiency were detailedly investigated. Theoretical calculations manifest that the A-NCPM SHG scope of these crystals is 0.72~1.42 µm, and in experiments, the A-NCPM SHG waveband of 0.72~1.25 µm has been realized, by changing the ratio of the rare-earth elements RE1 and RE2 in RE1xRE21−xCOB crystals. Comparing to the temperature-dependent A-NCPM SHG of 0.95~1.34 µm in LiB3O5 (LBO) crystal, the composition-dependent A-NCPM SHG of 0.72~0.95 µm in RE1xRE21−xCOB type crystals is unique and has special significance for the frequency conversion of Ti:Sapphire lasers. Relationships between the birefringence and radius of rare-earth ion RE3+ in RE1xRE21−xCOB mixed crystals were discussed. Aiming for the A-NCPM SHG of 0.72~1.42 µm, we supply a clear, completed, and optimized solution on how to select the compositions of RE1xRE21−xCOB mixed crystals. Under focusing light beam conditions, high efficient A-NCPM SHG for both OPO and Ti:sapphire lasers were realized experimentally by using long Y- and Z-cut RE1xRE21−xCOB crystal samples.
Comparison and characterization of efficient frequency doubling at 397.5 nm with PPKTP, LBO and BiBO crystals

Abstract:A continuous-wave Ti:sapphire laser at 795 nm is frequency doubled in a bow-tie type enhancement four-mirror ring cavity with LiB3O5 (LBO), BiB3O6 (BiBO), and periodically polled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) crystals, respectively. The properties of 397.5 nm ultra-violet (UV) output power, beam quality, stability for these different nonlinear crystals are investigated and compared. For PPKTP crystal, the highest doubling efficiency of 58.1% is achieved from 191 mW of 795 nm mode-matched fundamental power to 111 mW of 397.5 nm UV output. For LBO crystal, with 1.34 W of mode-matched 795 nm power, 770 mW of 397.5 nm UV output is achieved, implying a doubling efficiency of 57.4%. For BiBO crystal, with 323 mW of mode-matched 795 nm power, 116 mW of 397.5 nm UV output is achieved, leading to a doubling efficiency of 35.9%. The generated UV radiation has potential applications in the fields of quantum physics

Abstract:We have demonstrated 1.61W of 780nm single-frequency continuous-wave laser output with a semi-monolithic periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal doubler pumped by a 2-W erbium-doped fiber amplifier boosted 1560nm diode laser. The measured maximum doubling efficiency is 77%, and the practical value should be 80% when taking into account the fundamental-wave mode matching efficiency. The measured beam quality factor of 780nm output, M2, is better than 1.04. Typical root-mean-square fluctuation of 780nm output is less than 0.5% in 30minutes. This compact frequency doubler has good mechanical stability, and can be employed for many applications, such as laser cooling and trapping, atomic coherent control, atomic interferometer, and quantum frequency standard with rubidium atoms.

Abstract:Highly efficient frequency doubling of a continuous-wave Yb-doped fiber laser with a passively-locked enhancement cavity is achieved. The increase in efficiency is a result of improved transverse mode matching between the fiber and doubling cavities, which is enabled by an alignment method presented here. An optical conversion efficiency as high as 36.8% from a launched 976nm diode pump to a 532 nm green laser is obtained. The maximum 532 nm output is 24.5 W, which is limited by the onset of parasitic oscillations in the fiber laser.

Abstract:The electro-optic characteristics of the KTP crystal are analyzed in detail and Q-switched operation of a diode-laser-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser is reported using an intracavity KTP crystal. The KTP crystal was used as both an electro-optic Q-switcher and a frequency-doubling crystal in type II phase matching for generating pulsed green beams. Compared with the conventional frequency-doubling and Q-switching configuration where a Q-switcher and a frequency-doubling crystal was needed, low loss and high efficiency characteristics were realized by only using KTP crystal in our experimental setup. With the new type of KTP crystal doped particular element, the great green pulsed output was obtained continuously for a long time with no sign of electrochromic damage. In this paper, we demonstrasted a relatively new and compact intracavity frequency-doubled and Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser. The short-cavity laser was longitudinally pumped with a diode laser.

Abstract:A high-power single-frequency 1178 nm continuous-wave laser is generated in a two-stage stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-suppressed all-polarization-maintaining Raman fiber amplifier pumped by 1120 nm fiber lasers. A polarization-extinction-ratio of 30 dB is achieved due to the all-polarization-maintaining configuration and the polarization dependence gain of Raman scattering. Single-pass frequency doubling with a homemade periodically poled near-stoichiometric LiT alpha O-3 crystal (PPSLT) produces an up to 7 W narrow-linewidth laser at 589 nm. Abstract:This paper reports on a high-repetition-rate dual signal-wave (DSW) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating at the 1.5μm band with tunable wavelength intervals from 2.5nm to 69.1nm. Two periodically poled crystals, a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with multiple gratings and a single grating MgO-doped PPLN (PPMgOLN), are cascaded in the same OPO cavity to generate dual signal-waves by using quasi-phase-matched (QPM) technique. The pump source was a Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 50kHz. At an incident pump power of 3W, an average output power of 169.6mW at 1489.2nm and 1558.3nm has been achieved.

Abstract:A new series of nonlinear optical crystals LaxY1-xCa4O(BO3)(3) (LaxY1-xCOB) with multiple components were grown by using the traditional Czochralski pulling method. X-ray powder diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction experimental results proved that all these crystals formed in the LaxY1-xCOB solid solution state with a monoclinic structure of space group Cm. The optical birefringence was found to be adjustable by changing the compositional parameter x for the LaxY1-xCOB crystals. Taking advantage of the optical parametric oscillator laser, the non-critical phase-matching (NCPM) second-harmonic-generation (SHG) and third-harmonic-generation (THG) wavelengths along the Y-axis were determined at ambient temperature. In addition, the relationships between and among the optical birefringence, NCPM wavelength and crystal structure were discussed, and the NCPM SHG and THG of the 1064 nm laser were further achieved from the La0.120Y0.880COB and La0.140Y0.860COB crystals by adjusting the temperature, respectively. Using a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser as the fundamental light source, the angular acceptance, temperature acceptance, and optical conversion efficiencies were determined and found to be on the order of 107.6 mrad, 18.3 degrees C and 48.8% for SHG of the La0.120Y0.880COB crystal, respectively, and 126.8 mrad, 68.6 mrad, 10.6 degrees C and 32.4% for THG of the La0.140Y0.860COB crystal, respectively. It is demonstrated that LaxY1-xCOB is a promising NLO crystal for NCPM frequency conversion applications in the visible and ultraviolet spectral regions.

Abstract:The continuous-wave and acousto-optical Q-switched pulse laser properties of diode-pumped Nd:YAG crystal operating at 946nm formed with a simple plane–plane cavity have been studied. Extra-cavity single-pass quasi-phase matching (QPM) frequency doubling with periodically poled LiTaO3 (PPLT) as the nonlinear crystal yielded a maximum output power of 66mW at 473nm with an overall optical to optical efficiency of 14.2% from 946 to 473nm. Our result proves that this scheme is of practical value for the construction of a blue all-solid-state laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate a simple, compact and cost-efficient diode laser pumped frequency doubling system at 795 nm in the low power regime. In two configurations, a bow-tie four-mirror ring enhancement cavity with a PPKTP crystal inside and a semi-monolithic PPKTP enhancement cavity, we obtain 397.5nm ultra-violet coherent radiation of 35mW and 47mW respectively with a mode-matched fundamental power of about 110mW, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 32% and 41%. The low loss semi-monolithic cavity leads to the better results. The constructed ultra-violet coherent radiation has good power stability and beam quality, and the system has huge potential in quantum optics and cold atom physics.

Abstract:To rapidly improve strontium optical clocks, a high-power, high-efficiency, and high-beam-quality 461 nm laser is required. In blue lasers based on periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystals, the optical absorption in the crystals can induce thermal effects, which must be considered in the design of high-efficiency external-cavity frequency doubling lasers. The interdependence between the absorption and the thermally induced quasi-phase mismatch was taken into account for the solution to the coupled wave equations. By incorporating multilayer crystal approximation, a theoretical model was developed to accurately determine the absorption of the frequency doubling laser. Based on experimental parameters, the temperature gradient in the crystal, the influence of the boundary temperature on the conversion efficiency, and the focal length of the thermal lens were simulated. Theoretical calculations were employed to optimize the parameters of the external-cavity frequency doubling experiment. In the experiment, in a bow-tie external cavity was demonstrated by pumping a 10 mm long periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystal with a 922 nm laser, a 461 nm laser with a maximum output power of 382 mW. The conversion efficiency of the incident fundamental laser was 66.2%. The M2 factor of the frequency doubling beam was approximately 1.4.

Abstract:To achieve the non-critical phase-matching (NCPM) frequency conversions of an Nd: glass laser (1053 nm), a series of GdxY1-xCOB (x = 0.186, 0.156, 0.132, and 0.127) crystals have been grown by the Czochralski pulling method. Using an optical parametric oscillator laser, the room temperature NCPM second-harmonic-generation (SHG) and third-harmonic-generation (THG) wavelengths along the y-axis were determined for different GdxY1-xCOB crystals. By controlling the temperature of the Gd0.132Y0.868COB crystal, the NCPM SHG and THG of the 1053 nm laser were realized at 28 degrees C and 55 degrees C, respectively. Correspondingly, the angular acceptance, temperature acceptance, and optical conversion efficiencies were researched with a 1053 nm Nd:YLF laser as the fundamental light source. The gray-track generated during large energy THG is expected to be removed effectively by elevating the crystal temperature. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

In this work for the first time detailed investigation results are represented on physial properties of new mixed nonlinear crystals grown in accordance with diagram HgGa2S4:CdGa2S4→Hg1-xCdxGa2S4, phase-matching and potential efficiencies of second harmonic generation, so as on results of experimental investigation of TEA and mini TEA CO2 laser frequency doubling with it use. In spite of two time lower nonlinear susceptibility coefficients of both parent crystals in comparison with most efficient middle IR crystals high efficiency of frequency doubling is fixed in mixed crystals at room temperature. It is tree time in comparison with frequency doubling with, for example, popular ZnGeP2 and 5.5 time with AgGaSe2. These advantages are reached because realization of optimal non-critical phase-matching by choose of mixing ratio x=0.5, so as 2.3 time higher damage threshold, lower phonon absorption at CO2 laser wavelengths and lower meanings of refractive indexes at fundamental and second harmonic wavelengths. Generation of 397.5 nm Ultra-Violet Laser by Frequency Doubling in a PPKTP-Crystal Semi-Monolithic Resonant Cavity

Abstract:Frequency doubling in an external cavity is a prevalent method to generate an ultra-violet laser at 397.5 nm.A semi-monolithic resonant frequency doubling cavity based on the PPKTP crystal is built and is used to realize the resonant frequency doubling of the 795 nm single frequency continuous-wave laser amplified via a semiconductor tapered amplifier.Under the condition of 203 mW input power of a 795 nm laser,the 397.5 nm single frequency continuous-wave ultra-violet laser with a power of 60.4 mW is obtained,and the frequency doubling conversion efficiency is 30％;and the maximum doubling efficiency is 34.6％ with a fundamental power of about 87.5 mW.The beam quality factor M2 of the frequency doubling ultra-violet laser is superior to 1.21,indicating the better beam quality.The typical root-mean-square fluctuation of the output power within 30 min is less than 1.9％.This frequency doubler is compact,has good mechanical stability,and can be used to achieve steady output of ultraviolet laser.The ultra-violet laser can be used to generate the squeezed or entangled states of the rubidium transition line,and plays an important role in the quantum optics,precise measurement and other fields.

Abstract:An efficient femtosecond mode-locked laser using Nd and Y-codoped SrF2 crystal as the gain medium is presented in this letter. A 332 fs pulse centered at 1057 nm with a repetition rate of 89.8 MHz, a spectral width of 4.3 nm, and a mode-locked output power of up to 395 mW has been obtained under 1 W pump power, corresponding to an optical-to-optical efficiency of 39.5% and a slope efficiency of 69%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest optical efficiency in femtosecond Nd-doped crystal lasers.
Consideration of non-phase-matched nonlinear effects in the design of quasi-phase-matching crystals for optical parametric oscillators

Abstract:Femtosecond optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) are widely used in ultrafast nonlinear frequency conversion and quantum information. However, conventional OPOs based on quasi-phase-matching (QPM) crystals have many parasitic non-phase-matched processes which decreases the conversion efficiency. Here, we propose nine-wave coupled equations (NWCEs) to simulate all phase-matched and non-phase-matched interactions in QPM crystals to improve conventional three-wave coupled equations (TWCEs), especially for the situation of high intensity ultrashort pulses and complexly structured crystals. We discuss how to design the poling period of QPM crystal to maximize the conversion efficiency of signal light for a given OPO system. The simulation reveals that the OPO based on chirped periodically poled lithium niobate (CPPLN) with certain chirp rate has higher signal wave conversion efficiency than that of a PPLN, and demonstrates that NWCEs illustrates more details of the pulse evolution in the OPO cavity. Starting from a CPPLN, an aperiodically poled lithium niobate (APPLN) design is available by modifying the domain lengths of the crystal and optimizing the OPO output power via dynamical optimization algorithm. The results show that by using a properly designed APPLN crystal, a 1600nm OPO, when pumped by a femtosecond laser with 1030nm central wavelength, 150 femtosecond pulse duration and 5 GW/cm2 power intensity at the focus, can achieve very efficient output with a signal light conversion efficiency of 50.6%, which is higher than that of PPLN (25.2%) and CPPLN (40.2%). The scheme in this paper will provide a reference for the design of nonlinear QPM crystals of OPOs and will help to understand the complex nonlinear dynamical behavior in OPO cavities.

Abstract:We present a diode-pumped self-optical parametric oscillator (SOPO) in which the laser oscillation and frequency down conversion were simultaneously realized in a single Nd:MgO:PPLN crystal. The special thermal problem in this multi-functional crystal was studied by integrative optimization of the diode laser wavelength, pump beam size, and compact cavity design. At an absorbed pump power of 15.4 W, the SOPO output power was 1.2 W for both the 3.85 μm idler and 1.51 μm signal lasers.
