Abstract:A kind of rubber nanoparticles, methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene (MBS), was applied into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix to fabricate MBS/PVDF composite films. Uniform dispersion and good compatibility of MBS in the matrix were observed. We found that the entanglement state between MBS nanoparticles and random chains of PVDF could diminish gaps in the matrix, which is helpful for high breakdown strength. The composite film with 12 vol. % MBS showed the maximum breakdown strength of 535 MV/m and the high energy density of 9.85 J/cm3, which were 1.7 times and about 2.2 times higher than pure PVDF film, respectively.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based dielectrics have drawn great attention for capacitor applications due to their high energy-storage density. However, compared to the constantly increasing energy-storage density made possible by different approaches, the issues of reliability, including their charge-discharge cycling durability, have not been adequately discussed and remain unsolved. In this study, the incorporation of a small amount of MgO nanoparticles, i.e., 5wt. % MgO nanofillers, was proven to effectively improve the degradation of pure PVDF in the charge-discharge cycling test. The PVDF-5wt. % MgO nanocomposites showed excellent stability after 1500 charge-discharge cycles at room temperature and 50 degrees C. Using the pulsed electro-acoustic method, the space charge suppression effect was observed in PVDF-5wt. % MgO nanocomposites, which indicated that there was no distortion in the local electric field and helped enhance breakdown strength. At the same time, dielectric loss and AC conductivity were also significantly reduced, particularly at elevated temperatures. Such improvements in electrical properties are valuable, as they provide a direction for enhancing the reliability of PVDF-based composite dielectrics and enable their widespread application.

Abstract:Herein, graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets coated with insulated polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) were integrated into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to investigate the effects of the insulating PVP shell, loading, and its reaction time on the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites. Compared with the pristine GO/PVDF, the GO@PVP/PVDF nanocomposites show an improvement of the filler dispersion, and significantly suppressed conductivity and loss. Activation energies of GO/PVDF and GO@PVP/PVDF nanocomposites are calculated as 1.247 eV and 0.435 eV, respectively, indicating that the presence of PVP layer on the GO surface reduces the relaxation activation energy and makes the relaxation occurrence at low temperatures.

Abstract:This experimental study reported electrical properties of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/MgO nanocomposites, which were prepared by melt blending methods. The effects of surface modified MgO nanoparticles on the microstructure, space charge distribution, thermally stimulated current and DC breakdown strength of the nanocomposites were investigated. The addition of surface modified nanoparticles increases the amount of spherulites and decreases their sizes. It is found that the LDPE/MgO interface shows significant influence on electrical properties of nanocomposites. The addition of MgO nanoparticles is available to suppress the production of space charges and enhance the DC breakdown strength, depending on the loading levels of nanoparticles. Thermally stimulated currents of nanocomposites reveal strong correlation between the traps and electrical properties of nanocomposites. It is believed that this study would provide important hint to design and develop advanced polymer nanocomposites for dielectric applications, in particular the HVDC applications.

Abstract:Abstract Capacitor films with superior transmittance, flexibility, and high performance have attracted considerable attentions in the field of advanced energy storage devices. Nevertheless, the energy density is always increased at the expense of the dielectric constant or breakdown strength on one side. Therefore, based on the above stated issues, energy storage films with good optical transmission and breakdown resistance were prepared by combining a small amount of lamellar organic montmorillonite (OMMT) with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) substrates by a simple but effective solution blending method. The addition of OMMT effectively converts the crystalline structure of the PVDF matrix, making it more favorable for dielectric energy storage films, and the polymer‐based nano energy storage films exhibit an optical transmission of approximately 90% at 800 nm. More importantly, the presence of OMMT, a unique lamellar structure, effectively hinders the growth of electrical trees within the polymer composite, thereby improving the overall breakdown strength of the composite. Ultimately, at 0.6 wt% filler content, the PVDF/OMMT nanocomposite exhibited a breakdown strength of 460 MV/m and a discharge energy density of 7.26 J/cm 3 as well as an energy efficiency of 69%.

Abstract:Ultra-thin ZrO2 nanosheets are exfoliated from ZrClO2 center dot 8H(2)O powders through a fairly simplified process, and employed as nanofillers to fabricate poly(vinylidene fluoride)/ZrO2 nanocomposites films. Correlation between dielectric breakdown and energy storage properties of nanocomposites films was studied, which shows only 1 wt% incorporation of ZrO2 nanosheets leads to a much improved breakdown strength of 519 kV/mm, and hence consequently give rise to a high energy density of 11.03 J/cm(3) with efficiency of 67.4% in PVDF/ZrO2 nanocomposites, much higher than pristine PVDF (8.18 J/cm(3) at E-b of 416 kV/mm). In order to explore the origin of high breakdown strength, insulating and mechanical properties of nanocomposites are tested, according to which, both reduced leakage current and increased Young's modulus can give explanation for enhanced E-b.
Achieving high dielectric permittivity, high breakdown strength and high efficiency by cross-linking of poly(vinylidene fluoride)/BaTiO3 nanocomposites

Abstract:Polymer nanocomposite dielectrics have drawn increasing attention recent years. However, dispersion of high-ε nanoparticles causes decreased breakdown strength and increased loss tangent. High dielectric permittivity, high breakdown strength, low dielectric loss and high charging-discharging energy efficiency are hard to achieve at the same time. In this research, in order to achieve all these goals, a combination method consists of cross-linking and dispersion of high-ε nanoparticles was carried out. The cross-linking points limit polymer chain mobility in the amorphous phase, providing lower dielectric loss and lower conductivity. Therefore, breakdown strength increased from 402.8 MV/m of PVDF to 517.2 MV/m of cross-linked PVDF. By dispersing coated BaTiO3 nanoparticles, followed by cross-linking, cross-linked nanocomposites with higher ε, higher breakdown strength and higher efficiency compared with the polymer matrix were prepared. The maximum discharging energy density reached up to 14.1 J/cm3, about 70% higher than 8.02 J/cm3 for pristine PVDF. This research provides us a novel approach to achieve all these goals by a combination of cross-linking and dispersion of coated BT nanoparticles.
Mechanical, thermal, and dielectric properties of polyvinylidene fluoride nanocomposites fabricated by introducing functional MWCNTs /barium titanate compounding dielectric nanofillers

Abstract:<p>A facile strategy through incorporating barium titanate (BT)/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) compounding dielectric nanofillers into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) via melt‐processing was proposed. Benefiting from the strong interfacial interactions between BT and MWCNTs, as well as oxygen‐containing groups of BT/MWCNTs and fluorine atoms of PVDF, the sandwiched structure was constructed and thus tailoring the microstructure and enhancing the mechanical, thermal and dielectric properties of resultant nanocomposites. The effects of BT/MWCNTs multiscale dielectric nanofiller on the mechanical properties, heat resistance and dielectric properties of nanocomposites were investigated by infrared spectra, X‐ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, field emission scanning electron microscope, tensile and dielectric tests. XRD and DSC analysis indicated that compared with neat PVDF, BT/PVDF and MWCNTs/PVDF nanocomposites, the BT/MWCNTs/PVDF nanocomposites showed higher crystallinity and thermal properties. The dielectric performance tests showed that the BT/MWCNTs/PVDF nanocomposites had better dielectric performance than those of BT/PVDF and MWCNTs/PVDF nanocomposites. At 100 Hz, the dielectric constant of BT/MWCNTs/PVDF nanocomposites reached 119, which was 14 times that of neat PVDF, and the dielectric loss was only 0.051. The BT/MWCNTs/PVDF nanocomposites showed the tensile strength of 57.7 MPa and the tensile modulus of 1226 MPa, respectively. This work provides a novel strategy for the fabrication of PVDF based dielectric nanocomposites, inspiring the research and development of PVDF in the energy‐related areas in the future.</p>

Achieving High Discharged Energy Density in PVDF-based Nanocomposites Loaded with Fine Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 Nanofibers

Abstract:Recently, research in advanced energy storage materials with enhanced performance to satisfy the rapid growth of modern microelectronics has drawn tremendous attention. Poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanocomposites loaded with one-dimensional inorganic nanofillers are one of the most extensive research systems. Higher discharged energy density could be obtained in dielectric capacitors with larger dielectric permittivity and higher breakdown strength. Herein, Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 nanofibers (BST NFs) with three different diameters (NF1-140 nm, NF2-305 nm, NF3-505 nm) are fabricated by adjusting the parameters during the electrospinning process. The results suggest that optimizing the diameter and content of nanofibers is useful to form a balance between dielectric permittivity and the resistance to electrical breakdown. Nevertheless, discharged energy density (Ud) as well as energy storage efficiency (eta) turn down with thicker filler. The nanocomposite films loaded with a low content (1 vol%) of BST NF1 illustrates a large electric displacement of 10.4 mu c/cm2at 575 MV/m and a rather high Ud about 19.4 J/cm3 compared with the Ud (approximate to 11.08 J/cm3 at 475 MV/m) of pure PVDF film. More importantly, the discharge efficiency of the nanocomposites maintains a rather high level of 64%. Thus, regulating the diameter of 1D nanofillers could be a facile and effective option to obtain dielectric nanocomposite with outstanding energy storage performance.

Abstract:Atomic-scale interface engineering in BaTiO3@TO2 nanofibers (TiO2 nano-fibers embedded with BaTiO3 nano-particles) leads to concurrent enhancement of electric displacement and breakdown strength in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanocomposites. An ultrahigh energy density of ≈20 J cm(-3) is achieved with only 3 vol% nanofibers, which is by far the highest discharged energy density of PVDF-based nanocomposites.

Abstract:Polymer nanocomposites with improved dielectric permittivity and high breakdown strength are extremely desirable for the flexible electronic devices and power systems. The compatibility of fillers and polymer matrix is important in determining the dielectric and breakdown strength properties. The core–shell structure concept is useful to improve the compatibility of fillers with polymer matrix. Herein, an organic thermoplastic urethanes (TPU) polymer shell was successfully grafted on the surface of barium titanate (BaTiO 3 , BT) and such a TPU shell improved the permittivity and breakdown strength of TPU@BT/PVDF polymer nanocomposites greatly. The permittivity of TPU@BT/PVDF nanocomposites with 12 wt% fillers at 10 2 Hz was up to 13.5, which was 1.5 times higher than that of pure poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). The improvement of the dielectric properties could be attributed to the enhanced interfacial polarisation between BT nanoparticles and TPU shell. Besides, the compatibility of BT nanoparticles and PVDF matrix was improved after the introduction of TPU shell. Accordingly, a highest breakdown strength value about 373 MV/m was obtained for the TPU@BT/PVDF nanocomposites with 7 wt% fillers. The core–shell strategy could be extended to a variety of inorganic fillers to improve the dielectric and breakdown strength properties of polymer nanocomposites.
Enhanced Dielectric Properties and Thermal Conductivity of Sandwich-Structured PVDF Composites by Spin Coating

Abstract:Polymeric dielectric composites with high thermal conductivity have played an important role in modern society because of their significant applications in the fields of sensing and energy storage. The combination of the use of various dimensions fillers and surface modification to prepare high thermal conductivity and high dielectric permittivity composite materials has attracted great attention. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), in general, has acted as basis materials to prepare dielectric materials due to its high permittivity and favorable flexibility. In this study, the modified BN (m-BN) was prepared by coating with polydopamine (PDA) to improve the compatibility and reduce the interfacial thermal resistance. Meanwhile, MWCNT grafted with PAAc named m-MWCNT was also used. The novel sandwich-structured PVDF nanocomposites with m-BN fillers in the outer PVDF layers and m-MWCNT in the middle PVDF layer were prepared by spin-coating. Results shown that the optimized sandwiched structure of PVDF composite with 20 wt% m-BN fillers in the outer layers and 2% m-MWCNT in the middle layer displays a high thermal conductivity of 3.5 W m -1 K -1 (three times of that of single layer). The dielectric constant of sandwiched structure PVDF composite is 17, which is about 190% times higher than that of PVDF/m-BN (single layer). These enhancements in dielectric properties may be attributed to m-MWCNT and Maxwell-Wagner interfacial polarization which was generated from the multi-layers structure. The mechanism is further explored.
Enhanced Dielectric Performance of Poly(vinylidene Fluoride)-Based Composites Filled with Hexadecylphosphonic Acid Functionalized Nanometals

Abstract:Zero-dimensional nickel nanosphere (0-D NiNS), one-dimensional silver nanowire (1-D AgNW) and two-dimensional silver nanoplate (2-D AgNP) were prepared and studied as conductive nanofiller within flexible dielectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix. Hexadecylphosphonic acid (HDPA) modifiers were functionalized onto the surface of those nanometals. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) verified the functionalization of organophosphonic acid surface modification agent. X-ray diffraction characterization (XRD) suggested the surface functionalization did not change the crystal structure of nanometals. The organic dielectric surface modified layer not only acted as interparticle barriers to prevent nanometals from direct connection but also produced excellent compatibility between the fillers and the polymer matrix and ensures the dispersion of fillers in the polymer matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra information indicated the increase of electro-active β-phase of PVDF composites after doping of nanometals and surface functionalization of filler. Among all the PVDF composites, dielectric materials with HDPA functionalized AgNP as fillers have the best dielectric performance. The good dielectric performance could be triggered by relatively smaller size effect, parallel micro-capacitor microstructure, particular morphology and large-small nanosize co-doping way.
Large Enhancement in Polarization Response and Energy Storage Properties of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) by Improving the Interface Effect in Nanocomposites

Abstract:A novel strategy to improve the interface effect of BaTiO3 (BT)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanocomposites is developed to achieve high energy density. The surface of BT is first hydroxylated by H2O2, then modified with a titanate coupling agent DN-101. BT modified with DN-101 is also considered as a control group. Results show that the polarization response of nanocomposites with 10 vol % H2O2-DN-101-BaTiO3 (D-h-BT) is largely enhanced, which is 18% bigger than that of the nanocomposites with 10 vol % DN-101-BaTiO3 (D-BT) at 240 MV m(-1). The dielectric breakdown strength is also improved from 240 MV m(-1) of nanocomposites with 10 vol % D-BT to 260 MV m(-1) of nanocomposites with 10 vol % D-h-BT, which makes the maximum stored energy density increase from 6.5 to 9.01 J cm(-3), and the discharged energy density of the composites improved from 3.01 to 4.31 J cm(-3). The findings based on this research are applicable to various nanofillers and polymer matrix, which provides a simple but effective way for nanocomposites with enhanced dielectric properties in next-generation electric and electronic industry.

Abstract:Polymer-based composites act as film capacitors are an ideal candidate, but further applications are limited by the conflict between energy density and efficiency. Herein, a novel one-dimensional core-shell tubular structure of nanofillers is proposed, SiO2 surface-modified Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 nanotubes (BST@SiO2 NTs) are prepared by improved electrospinning and then wet chemical method. Notably, both improved dielectric properties and enhanced breakdown strength could be obtained by incorporating moderate BST@SiO2 NTs. Consequently, the 2 vol% BST@SiO2 NT/PVDF composites achieve an ultra-high Ud (discharged energy density) of similar to 18.08 J/cm(3), and it is quite larger than 11.25 J/cm(3) of neat PVDF. More importantly, compared to pure PVDF (59.87%), an excellent efficiency of 70.06% is also maintained. This work opens up a novel and unique sight for the structural designing of inorganic nanofillers, which is the ideal strategy to obtain high-performance dielectric composites and related potential applications.
Optimizing nanostructure to achieve enhanced breakdown strength and improved energy storage performances in dipolar polymer

Abstract:Polymer dielectrics have attracted ever-increasing attention for electrical energy storage applications in recent years. Typically, polymer-based nanocomposite films are adopted to obtain polymer dielectrics with high energy density but sometime suffer from the inhomogeneous distribution of fillers. In this work, the enhanced breakdown strength, suppressed dielectric loss and improved energy storage performances of PVDF film are concurrently achieved via the regulation of sub-nano free volume, without introduction of any kinds of fillers and also minimizing the uneven distribution of local electric field. The most improved breakdown strength achieves up to 488 MV/m, with an enhancement of 60% compared with pristine PVDF, which enables the irradiated PVDF film to display improved polarization strength and charged energy density, giving rise to max polarization strength of 3.55 μC/cm2 and charged energy density of 9.75 J/cm3. More importantly, the irradiated PVDF film exhibits a superior discharged energy density of 7.91 J/cm3 which is 261% of that of pristine PVDF film, while maintaining the charge-discharge efficiency above 80%. In addition, the alternation of experimental breakdown strength with the increment of irradiation dose is found to be inversely correlated with the size variation of free volume holes, and the theoretical simulation of local electric field distribution further proves the breakdown strength enhancement originates from the size shrinkage of free volume holes. The adjustment of free volume provides a potentially effective way to regulate dielectric properties and energy storage performances of dipolar polymers.

Abstract:Nanocomposites made of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (NP)s with different surface chemistry and polyvinyl difluoride (PVDF) polymer were investigated using full atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. NPs with hydroxyl (OH), hexanoic, and oleic acid terminations were considered in this study. The effect of each surface chemistry was investigated in terms of the mechanical properties, the distribution of the internal energy around the NP, and the chain polarization gradient from the interface to the bulk. From this investigation, we find that oleic acid termination, although the most popular, is less favorable for interfacial interaction and local polarization. The OH-terminated NP results in the best configuration for the properties investigated. The hexanoic acid-grafted NP presents a good compromise. Hydrogen bonding governs the induced response of the nanocomposites. Although the hexanoic acid grafted NP presents less hydrogen bonding than the OH-terminated case, the conformation of the hexanoic acid acts as a mobility flow inhibitor, leading to a performance comparable to that of the OH-terminated NP composite. This work led to investigating routes to make nanocomposite materials with optimized properties. These results shed light on the multiple combinations offered by nanocomposites that go beyond the conventional effects of size.
Influence of spinel ZnMn2O4 particles on the dielectric performance of PVDF‐based composites

Abstract:Larger breakdown strength can be obtained in ZnMn2O4/PVDF composites with even low content. Both enhanced energy storage density and charge‐discharge efficiency can be achieved in ZnMn2O4/PVDF composites with certain filler content. Spinel ZnMn2O4 are widely used in lithium batteries, sensors, and catalysis due to its electrical and magnetic properties. However, the influence of the resistive switching effect on the dielectric properties of the polymer matrix induced by ZnMn2O4 has not been investigated in depth. In this study, spinel ZnMn2O4 powders were synthesized via the hydrothermal method, and ZnMn2O4/PVDF composites were prepared for research the influence of ZnMn2O4 particles on dielectric performance of PVDF‐based composites. The existence of ZnMn2O4 particles improves the dielectric constant slightly, while enhances the breakdown strength of composites significantly. The maximum value of breakdown strength achieved in composite with 10 wt% ZnMn2O4 is 108 kV/mm, which is five times larger than that of undoped PVDF. The enhanced dielectric properties are attributed to the quasi‐Coulomb blockade effect induced by the resistive switching effect of ZnMn2O4 particles under applied electric field. The results presented in this work indicate the promising of ZnMn2O4 particles in dielectric and insulating composites.

Abstract:In order to synchronously improve dielectric permittivity (ε′), breakdown strength (Eb), and thermal conductivity (TC) while inhibiting dissipation factor (tan δ) of raw Zn (Zinc)/PVDF (poly[vinylidene fluoride]) composites, two kinds of core‐shell structured particles of Zn@ZnO (zinc oxide) and Zn@ZnO@PS (polystyrene) were synthesized by high‐temperature oxidation followed by suspension polymerization, then they were composited with PVDF to elaborately generate morphology‐controllable high‐ε′ but low loss, and high TC composites. The results confirm that both the Zn@ZnO/PVDF and Zn@ZnO@PS/PVDF composites show markedly improved ε′, suppressed tan δ and conductivity over the original Zn/PVDF because of the induced multiple polarizations in the Zn@ZnO and Zn@ZnO@PS configurations and the barrier effect of constructed shells on direct contact of Zn particles. The second organic PS shell inhibits the loss and conductivity due to its high‐electrical resistivity, and further boosts the Eb and TC of the composites owing to enhanced interfacial compatibility between the Zn@ZnO and PVDF, which lessens the local electric field distortion and concentration, and therefore, promotes phonon transport across the interfaces through suppressing the thermal interfacial resistance. The prepared Zn@ZnO@PS/PVDF with a high Eb and ε′ but low tan δ, as well as enhanced TC, exhibit appealing potential applications in microelectronic devices and power equipment.

Abstract:In this article, the nano-MgO particles were used as inorganic fillers, and polypropylene (PP) polymer was used as a matrix. The nano-MgO/PP composites were prepared by double melt blending. Using the polarization microscope (PLM) test and hot-stage microscope test, the crystalline morphology of PP and nano-MgO/PP with different mass fraction were observed. Using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) test, the parameters and crystallinity in the process of isothermal crystallization could be obtained. Additionally, the samples of pure PP and nano-MgO/PP composites were dealt with using a breakdown test and a dielectric frequency spectra test. From the experimental results, nano-MgO particle doping decreased the samples’ crystal size, and the crystalline structure was converted from large spherulites to fascicled crystallization. Additionally, the crystallization rate became fast and crystallinity increased. According to the breakdown test, the nano-MgO particle doping made the composites form small, dense spherulites. The breakdown developed through a longer path, so the composites’ breakdown strength rose greatly. When the mass fraction of nano-MgO particles was 3%, the shape parameter of the composites’ Weibull distribution β was larger, which illustrated that the nano-MgO particles were dispersed uniformly in the PP matrix. According to the dielectric frequency spectra test, the dielectric constant of different nanocomposites were all lower than which of pure PP, but the loss angle tangent values were all higher than which of pure PP.
