Abstract:Carbon is a versatile element in the periodic table because of its ability to form various stable and metastable allotropes. In the present work, an orthorhombic carbon allotrope with ‘4-membered rectangles’ is predicated by Particle Swarm Optimization method at 0GPa. Calculations indicate that this new phase is dynamically and mechanically stable although it has a high enthalpy. Its electronic and mechanical properties such as elastic constants, hardness, ideal tensile strength and shear strength are systematically studied. The results show that it is an indirect band gap crystal with a gap of 2.68eV; in spite of its elastic anisotropy, the theoretical hardness of 76.2GPa still makes it a potential superhard material; the obtained ideal tensile strength and shear strength are 69.0GPa and 75.6GPa, respectively, confirming its superhard character. The related microscopic deformation mechanisms are also detailedly analyzed through investigating the corresponding charge density, which reveals that the bonds arranged parallel to the b-axis are responsible for the breakdown of the crystal under the critical tension and shear deformations. These studies provide important information for the potential applications of the crystal once it is synthesized.
Monoclinic Mc28 Carbon: A Sp2-Sp3 Hybridized Carbon Allotrope with Superhard and Metallic Properties

Abstract:New carbon allotropes with mixed sp, sp(2) and sp(3) bonds are now the focus of theoretical and experimental researches due to their abnormal properties. We here theoretically proposed a novel three-dimensional carbon structure with mixed sp(2) and sp(3) bonds (named as mC28 carbon) via particle swarm optimization method. mC28 carbon is built by the 'diamond-like' sp(3) networks connected by sp(2) bonded carbon atoms. It has a lower enthalpy than graphite after similar to 29 GPa and is dynamically stable at zero pressure. More interesting, mC28 carbon is metallic, which can be attributed to the connected sp(2) bonding carbon atoms. They provide a channel for their extra delocalized valence electron that siting at pz orbital. mC28 carbon is also a superhard material with theoretical Vickers hardness of 85 GPa.

Abstract:We report a novel phase of carbon possessing a monoclinic C2/m structure (8 atoms/cell) identified using an ab initio evolutionary structural search. This polymorph, which we call M-carbon, is related to the (2x1) reconstruction of the (111) surface of diamond and can also be viewed as a distorted (through sliding and buckling of the sheets) form of graphite. It is stable over cold-compressed graphite above 13.4 GPa. The simulated x-ray diffraction pattern and near K-edge spectroscopy are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data [W. L. Mao, Science 302, 425 (2003)10.1126/science.1089713] on overcompressed graphite. The hardness and bulk modulus of this new carbon polymorph are calculated to be 83.1 and 431.2 GPa, respectively, which are comparable to those of diamond.

Abstract:A novel carbon allotrope of C-centered orthorhombic C-8 (Cco-C-8) is predicted by using a recently developed particle-swarm optimization method on structural search. Cco-C-8 adopts a sp(3) three-dimensional bonding network that can be viewed as interconnected (2, 2) carbon nanotubes through 4- and 6-member rings and is energetically more favorable than earlier proposed carbon polymorphs (e.g., M carbon, bct-C-4, W carbon, and chiral C-6) over a wide range of pressures studied (0-100 GPa). The simulated x-ray diffraction pattern, density, and bulk modulus of Cco-C-8 are in good accordance with the experimental data on structurally undetermined superhard carbon recovered from cold compression of carbon nanotube bundles. The simulated hardness of Cco-C-8 can reach a remarkably high value of 95.1 GPa, such that it is capable of cracking diamond.
Orthorhombic C36: a Sp2–sp3 Carbon with Pressure-Induced Metallization and Superconductivity

Abstract:Because of their particular characteristics, searching for potential sp2–sp3 hybridized carbon allotropes has become the foundation of new functional materials in the future. Here, we design a novel carbon phase constructed by sp2–sp3 hybridized bonding networks with a 36-atom body-centered orthorhombic unit cell, termed oC36. oC36 shows thermodynamic stability comparable to most of the theoretically predicted sp3 carbons. The elastic and dynamical stability of oC36 is confirmed by the calculation results of elastic constants and phonon spectra. Analysis of electronic properties reveals that oC36 changes from semiconductivity to one-dimensional conductivity with external pressure exceeding approximately 4 GPa. The conductivity arises from the overlap of the valance and conduction bands owing to sp2 hybridized nonbonding carbon interactions as the lattice constant decreases. Electron–phonon coupling calculations indicate the superconductivity of oC36 under 25 GPa, and its λ and TC values are 0.50 and 10.7 K, respectively. Strikingly, the estimated hardness, tensile strength, and shear strength of oC36 reach remarkably high values of 69.5, 79.1, and 78.9 GPa, respectively, indicating its superhardness and ultra-incompressibility. Our research expands the scope of sp2–sp3 carbon allotropes and provides new ideas for the later theoretical design of carbon allotropes with switchable properties.

Abstract:Superhard materials have always attracted people's interesting due to their extensive industrial applications. In this work, two reasonable superhard monoclinic allotropes of boron nitrides with space group of Cm have been designed based on previously proposed M-carbon structure using first-principles calculations. Our results show that Cm-BN-1 and Cm-BN-2 are dynamically stable, and they are direct semiconductors with bandgap of 2.69 and 3.90 eV, respectively. Moreover, they could be potential superhard materials with Vickers hardness of 58.0 and 60.4 GPa, respectively. This work provides insights for exploring new superhard boron nitrides materials.

Abstract:Using a recently developed 'Crystal structure AnaLYsis by Particle Swarm Optimization' (CALYPSO) algorithm on a structural search, we predicted a novel sp(3) carbon allotrope possessing an orthorhombic lattice with the space group Cmmm (oC32). The calculated elastic constants and the simulated hardness revealed that oC32 simultaneously possesses ultra-incompressible and superhard properties with a high bulk modulus of 457 GPa and a high Vickers hardness of 96.2 GPa. This oC32 phase is dynamically stable and energetically more preferable than the experientially observed cold-compressed carbon, thus oC32 is expected to be experimentally synthesizable under extreme conditions. These results further expand the list of meta-stable carbon allotropes and superhard materials under atmospheric and extreme conditions.

Abstract:The sp 2–sp 3-hybridized carbon allotropes with the advantage of two hybrid structures possess rich and fascinating electronic and mechanical properties and they have received long-standing attention. We design a class of versatile sp 2–sp 3 carbons composed of graphite and diamond structural units with variable sizes. This class of sp 2–sp 3 carbons is energetically more favorable than graphite under high pressure, and their mechanical and dynamical stabilities are further confirmed at ambient pressure. The calculations of band structure and mechanical properties indicate that this class of sp 2–sp 3 carbons not only exhibits peculiar electronic characteristics adjusted from semiconducting to metallic nature but also presents excellent mechanical characteristics, such as superhigh hardness and high ductility. These sp 2–sp 3 carbons have desirable properties across a broad range of potential applications.

Abstract:A novel superhard carbon allotrope T-C9 with an all-sp 3 bonding network is theoretically predicted in this work. The new phase of the carbon allotrope has tetragonal symmetry with space group P-4m2, and the structural properties, stability, mechanical anisotropy, mechanical and electronic properties of T-C9 are systematically investigated utilizing density functional theory. T-C9 is mechanically and dynamically stable, and T-C9 is favorable in energy which is lower than T carbon by 0.459 eV/atom at zero pressure. The bulk modulus and shear modulus of T-C9 are calculated to be 328 GPa and 243 GPa, respectively, which are slightly larger than those of T-C5, mC12 and tP40 carbon. The brittleness and superhardness of T-C9 are confirmed by the values of B/G (1.35) and the hardness (66.7 GPa), respectively. In addition, the ratio of the maximum and minimum Young's modulus reveals that T-C9 exhibits anisotropy, especially in the (110) and (111) directions. Electronic properties indicate that T-C9 can be considered to be semiconductor material with a wide indirect band gap of 4.128 eV.

Abstract:A new sp–sp 2-hybridized tetragonal carbon allotrope, namely Tetra-carbon, is predicted through the evolutionary particle swarm structural search. Tetra-carbon has a 3D framework composed of sp 2 carbon helixes connected by linear sp carbon chains, similar to the interconnected network of propadienyl groups, which forms the well-proportioned microporous structure. Tetra-carbon is thermodynamically more stable than known graphdiyne and carbyne carbon and also shows mechanical and dynamic stabilities at ambient pressure. Tetra-carbon is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap of 3.27 eV and has anisotropic tensile strengths with an unexpected large tensile strain of 0.64 along the [001] direction. Base on the analysis of Poisson’s ratios as well as the tensile strains, it is significantly revealed that Tetra-carbon is a mechanically ductile microporous carbon allotrope in contrast with the known brittle carbons such as diamond, potentially applied in the fields where the ductile metals are available.
Novel superhard tetragonal hybrid sp3/sp2 carbon allotropes Cx (x = 5, 6, 7): Crystal chemistry and ab initio studies

Abstract:Novel superhard tetragonal carbon allotropes C5, C6, and C7, characterized by the presence of sp3- and sp2-like carbon sites, have been predicted from crystal chemistry and extensively studied by quantum density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All new allotropes were found to be cohesive, with crystal densities and cohesive energies decreasing along the C5 C6 C7 series due to the greater openness of the structures resulting from the presence of C=C ethene and C=C=C propadiene subunits, and mechanically stable with positive sets of elastic constants. The Vickers hardness evaluated by different models qualifies all allotropes as superhard. Phonon band structures confirm that the new allotropes are also dynamically stable. The electronic band structures reveal their metallic-like behavior due to the presence of sp2-hybridized carbon.

Abstract:A structurally stable crystalline carbon allotrope is predicted by means of the first-principles calculations. This allotrope can be derived by substituting each atom in diamond with a carbon tetrahedron, and possesses the same space group Fd^1 3m as diamond, which is thus coined as T- carbon. The calculations on geometrical, vibrational and electronic properties reveal that T-carbon, with a considerable structural stability and a much lower density 1.50 g/cm3, is a semiconductor with a direct band gap about 3.0 eV, and has a Vickers hardness 61.1 GPa lower than diamond but comparable with cubic boron nitride. Such a form of carbon, once obtained, would have wide applications in photocatalysis, adsoption, hydrogen storage and aerospace materials.
Simple Cubic Carbon Phase C21-sc: A Promising Superhard Carbon Conductor

Abstract:Traditionally, all superhard carbon phases including diamond are electric insulators and all conductive carbon phases including graphite are mechanically soft. Based on first-principles calculation results, we report a superhard but conductive carbon phase C21-sc which can be obtained through increasing the sp3 bonds in the previously proposed soft and conductive phase C20-sc (Phys. Rev. B 74, 172101 2006). We also show that further increase of sp3 bonds in C21-sc results in a superhard and insulating phase C22-sc with sp3 bonds only. With C20-sc, C21-sc, C22-sc and graphite, the X-ray diffraction peaks from the unidentified carbon material synthesized by compressing the mixture of tetracyanoethylene and carbon black (Carbon, 41, 1309, 2003) can be understood. In view of its positive stability, superhard and conductive features, and the strong possibility of existence in previous experiments, C21-sc is a promising multi-functional material with potential applications in extreme conditions.
Exotic Cubic Carbon Allotropes

Abstract:Elemental carbon exists in various aesthetically pleasing architectures. These forms include a group of synthesized allotropes with cubic modifications that have taken controversial or even unidentified crystal structures, which makes determining their physical properties difficult. In this study, four novel cubic carbon polymorphs (fcc-C-10, fcc-C-12, bcc-C-20, and fcc-C-32) that exhibit lattice parameters within the lame range as those of undetermined cubic carbon allotropes are proposed by employing a newly developed ab initio particle-swarm optimization methodology for crystal structure prediction. The four structures are all three-dimensional polymers consisting of unique, small C-10, C-12, C-20, and C-32 cages with quite low density. Investigation of their electronic and mechanical properties illustrate that the cage like cubic carbons are all semiconductors with excellent mechanical performance, specifically superhardness and high ductility. Moreover, we readily explain a long-standing controversial experimentally synthesized cubic carbon (viz., the so-called "superdense" carbon) using the previously proposed bcc C-6 based on the coincident lattice constant and electron diffraction data between the theoretical and experimental results.
A New Family of Sp 3 -Hybridized Carbon Phases

Abstract:A new family of superhard carbon allotropes C48(2i + 1) is constructed by alternating even 4 and 8 membered rings. These new carbon allotropes are of a spatially antisymmetrical structure, compared with the symmetrical structures of bct-C4, Z-carbon, and P-carbon. Our calculations show that bulk moduli of C48(2i + 1) are larger than that of c-BN and smaller than that of cubic-diamond. C48(2i + 1) are transparent superhard materials possessing large Vicker hardness comparable to diamond. This work can help us understand the structural phase transformations of cold-compression graphite and carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:In this work, two orthorhombic superhard carbon phases C16 and C24 are proposed theoretically based on first-principles calculations, and both their space group is Cmm2. Their structure, elastic properties (including stability, hardness, and anisotropy) and electronic properties are calculated and analyzed systematically. The mechanical stability and dynamic stability of C16 and C24 under ambient pressure and high pressure are proven by elastic constants and phonon spectrum. The bulk modulus and shear modulus of C16 are 365 GPa, 313 GPa, and those of C24 are 363 GPa, 308 GPa, which are larger than T-C9, oP8 carbon, C96 and tP40 carbon. By adopting Chen's model, the hardness of C16 and C24 are calculated to be 45.2 GPa and 44.1 GPa, suggesting that they are potential superhard carbon materials. Investigations of anisotropy factors, the ratio of maximum and minimum for elastic modulus and the 3D structure surface reveal that C16 and C24 exhibit anisotropy at different pressure and main planes. In addition, the band structures suggest that C16 and C24 both belong to indirect semiconductor with band gap of 4.078 eV and 2.941 eV respectively.

Abstract:A novel carbon allotrope, denoted P2/m C54, is proposed in this work. The structural properties, mechanical properties, mechanical and dynamical stability, relative formation enthalpy, anisotropy in Young's modulus and electronic properties for P2/m C54 are investigated in this work. First, P2/m C54 is found to remain mechanically and dynamically stable below 100 GPa, with a relative formation enthalpy that is 0.729 eV/atom less than that of T carbon. The bulk modulus, shear modulus and Young's modulus of P2/m C54 are calculated to be 345 GPa, 332 GPa and 754 GPa, respectively; the hardness of P2/m C54 is calculated to be 54.1 GPa and 70.4 GPa using Chen's model and Lyakhov and Oganov's model, respectively. All these calculations suggest that P2/m C54 is a potential superhard material. Furthermore, the band gap of P2/m C54 is determined to be 4.95 eV; in other words, P2/m C54 is an indirect band gap semiconductor material with a wide band gap at ambient pressure.

Abstract:Ternary boron-carbon-nitrogen (B-C-N) compounds are considered to possess hardness comparable to diamond and thermal stability comparable to c-BN. Explorations for desirable B-C-N phases have been continuous. However, the nonconductive properties of most B-C-N compounds narrow the applications of these compounds. Herein, we propose a sp(2)-sp(3) hybridized phase of t-B2C3N2, which consists of diamond-like BC blocks connected with single N-N bonds. Elastic constants and phonon dispersion curves confirm that t-B2C3N2 is mechanically and dynamically stable. The structure processes 2D metallicity in a strong 3D network. Furthermore, hardness and electron-phonon calculations reveal that t-B2C3N2 is superhard and superconductive with a superconducting critical temperature reaching 2.3 K.

Abstract:A 3-dimension orthorhombic symmetry carbon allotrope structure o P10 carbon with space group Pmma is investigated based on density functional theory. The o P10 carbon is theoretically more favorable in enthalpy than most other carbon allotropes. At the same time, o P10 carbon possesses dynamic stability and mechanical stability. The elastic moduli (Young's modulus E is 928 GPa, bulk modulus B is 390 GPa, and shear modulus G is 421 GPa) of o P10 carbon are greater than those of c-BN. o P10 carbon shows that the stress response in the [001], [010], and [100] directions is between 105.3 GPa and 136.0 GPa, proving that o P10 carbon is a potential superhard material. The o P10 carbon exhibits different degrees of mechanical anisotropy, and all the mechanical anisotropy factors increase with increasing pressure. In addition, o P10 carbon is a quasi-direct and wide band gap semiconductor material. Based on the excellent mechanical and electronic properties of o P10 carbon, it may be used in cutting tools and microelectronic applications such as photodetectors.

Abstract:Finding intrinsic carbon superconductor is an interesting topic. Based on density functional first-principles calculations, we first study the phonon-mediated superconductivity in a cubic metallic carbon allotrope, namely sc-C$_{20}$, which has been synthesized in experiment. The electron-phonon coupling is accurately computed with Wannier interpolation method. By solving the Eliashberg equations, we predict that sc-C$_{20}$ is an intrinsic carbon superconductor, without introducing any guest atoms or doping, whose transition temperature is determined to be about 24 K. Our findings enrich the family of carbon-based superconductors.
