Abstract:Development of transition metal oxide catalysts with a tunable structure is extremely important for energy, chemical and environmental processes. Herein, we report a new strategy for the synthesis of a highly stable and active Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction with high-energy interfacial structures through two-step hydrothermal-crystallization for efficient low-temperature CO catalytic oxidation. By selectively etching, an anatase TiO2 support exposing the high-index (112) facet was first created. The high-index (112) facet with high surface energy can endow the bulk TiO2 support with unique physical and chemical properties so as to act as a foundation to construct a robust high-energy interfacial bulk heterojunction. Because of the presence of Ti–O–Co species at the high-energy interface, the prepared Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction possessed much more catalytic active sites compared to Co3O4 nanoparticles supported on conventional TiO2 supports and exhibited a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 3.56 × 10−3 s−1 at 120 °C, which was very competitive compared to those of reported cobalt-based catalysts and 1000 times higher than that of commercial Co3O4. Importantly, due to the strong interactions between Co3O4 and the TiO2 bulk support exposed high-index facet, more attractive water-resisting properties for low temperature CO oxidation can be achieved in the presence of steam (∼2%) compared to previously reported catalysts. The results show promising opportunities for tailoring catalytic behaviors beyond a facile and rational design with a controllable metal–support interface.
N-Coordinated Dual-Metal Single-Site Catalyst for Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:Catalysts for CO oxidation reaction are mainly based on oxide/hydroxide materials with multicomponent active sites. Here, we report a nonoxide/hydroxide material, atomically dispersed dual-metal single sites (Fe-Co sites) on N-doped carbon support, as a highly active catalyst for CO oxidation. It can greatly lower the temperature for complete CO conversion as low as -73 degrees C with a turnover frequency of 0.096 s(-1). X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectra, pulse-adsorption microcalorimetry, and density functional theory studies show that the Fe-Co sites synergistically catalyze CO oxidation facilely following the Langmuir Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism with CO preferentially adsorbing at the Co sites and O-2 adsorbing at the Fe sites. These results, for the first time, reveal that the dual-metal single site on N-doped carbon can efficiency catalyze low-temperature CO oxidation reaction without the involvement of supports, such as oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups.

Abstract:As a toxic pollutant, carbon monoxide (CO) usually causes harmful effects on human health. Therefore, the thermally catalytic oxidation of CO has received extensive attention in recent years. The CuO-based catalysts have been widely investigated due to their availability. In this study, a series of transition metal oxides (Fe2O3, Co3O4 and NiO) promoted CuO-based catalysts supported on the α-MnO2 nanowire catalysts were prepared by the deposition precipitation method for catalytic CO oxidation reactions. The effects of the loaded transition metal type, the loading amount, and the calcination temperature on the catalytic performances were systematically investigated. Further catalyst characterization showed that the CuO/α-MnO2 catalyst modified with 3 wt% Co3O4 and calcined at 400 °C performed the highest CO catalytic activity (T90 = 75 °C) among the investigated catalysts. It was supposed that the loading of the Co3O4 dopant not only increased the content of oxygen vacancies in the catalyst but also increased the specific surface area and pore volume of the CuO/α-MnO2 nanowire catalyst, which would further enhance the catalytic activity. The CuO/α-MnO2 catalyst modified with 3 wt% NiO and calcined at 400 °C exhibited the highest surface adsorbed oxygen content and the best normalized reaction rate, but the specific surface area limited its activity. Therefore, the appropriate loading of the Co3O4 modifier could greatly enhance the activity of CuO/α-MnO2. This research could provide a reference method for constructing efficient low-temperature CO oxidation catalysts.
Fabrication of High-performance CeO2-MnOx/TiO2/Ti Monolithic Catalysts for Low-temperature and Stable CO Oxidation

Abstract:Low-temperature CO oxidation as an important oxidation reaction for the removal of gaseous pollutant has been studied for years. The development of efficient, low-cost and long-term stable monolithic catalysts has practical significance for commercial application. In this work, we demonstrate an easily accessible strategy of in-situ growth of TiO2 nanosheets support on flexible Ti mesh and the modification of CeO2 and MnOx active components through multi-step depositions. The CeO2-MnOx/TiO2/Ti monolithic catalysts show excellent CO oxidation catalytic activity, strong adhesion strength and outstanding long-term stability. The complete oxidation of CO can be achieved at 107.5 °C, which is comparable to some noble metal catalysts. SEM and TEM analysis reveals that the CeO2-MnOx/TiO2/Ti monolithic catalyst has homogeneous element distribution and good crystallinity. Moreover, the synthesis strategy of CeMn monolithic catalysts with strong adhesion strength proposed in this work will open up more opportunities for the application of metal mesh monolithic catalysts towards CO oxidation, three-way catalysts (TWCs), selective catalytic reduction (SCR), etc.

Abstract:TiO2/Au/CeO2 catalysts with different TiO2 contents were successfully synthesized through combining a dealloying Al-Ce-Ti-Au precursor alloy and calcining in O2. XRD, SEM, HRTEM, TEM-EDX mapping, N2 adsorption-desorption, H2-TPR, O2-TPD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, and in situ DRIFTS were used to characterize the structural phases, microstructures, and physicochemical properties of the samples. The results revealed that the TiO2/Au/CeO2 catalysts prepared from Al89.7Ce9.5Ti0.5Au0.3 had a structure in which Au and TiO2 nanoparticles were loaded onto the surfaces of CeO2 nanorods in a porous framework, resulting in a large specific surface area and a small pore size. The results of an experimental test of the catalytic oxidation of CO indicated that the TiO2/Au/CeO2 catalysts prepared from Al89.7Ce9.5Ti0.5Au0.3 showed the highest activity for CO oxidation. The temperature required for 50% CO conversion was as low as 5 °C and 98% CO conversion was achieved at 40 °C. The catalysts were stable even after 100 h of catalytic oxidation. The introduction of a small amount of TiO2 into the Au/CeO2 is thought to have created an increased number of oxygen vacancies and an increased concentration of Auδ+ species. This leads to stronger interactions between the Au and CeO2 and more active oxygen species at the surface, which enhances the catalytic activity. The present work further develops catalytic materials with high performance and low cost.

Abstract:Transition metal oxide catalysts have attracted considerable attention for their promising potential as an alternative to replace noble metal catalysts in the application of various catalytic reactions. Herein, we report the design of monolithic Mn3O4/TiO2 catalysts in-situ grown on Ti mesh substrate for efficient and stable CO oxidation. Porous TiO2 film which is fabricated from the oxidation of Ti mesh using conventional plasma electrolytic oxide process plays an important role in the in-situ nucleation of TiO2 nanosheets with strong adhesion to maintain the long-term stable CO oxidation, as well as providing Ti precursors for the formation of TiO2 nanosheets. The decoration of Mn3O4 co-catalysts on TiO2 nanosheet support could significantly enhance the catalytic property of monolithic Mn3O4/TiO2 catalysts due to the synergetic effect. Thus, a complete CO oxidation can be achieved as low as 160 °C without the involvement of any noble metal catalyst. The novel synthesis strategy of Mn3O4/TiO2 heterogeneous catalysts shows overwhelming advantages of outstanding catalytic performance and superior stability in comparison with other traditional methods of powder-based catalysts. More importantly, it can be extended to the rational design of a variety of TiO2-based transition metal oxide catalysts which can be used for diverse applications including CO oxidation, de-NOx, CHx decomposition etc.

Abstract:A series of mesoporous PdCeOx solid solution with high specific area was successfully fabricated through a facile coprecipitation and low-temperature calcination strategy. The resulting materials possessed excellent catalytic activities for CO oxidation. The complete CO conversion could be achieved at as low as 20 °C. The doping of palladium increased the concentration of structural oxygen vacancy which is beneficial for the CO oxidation reaction process. The CO oxidation reaction mechanism over PdCeOx solid solution was proved through in situ DRIFTS analysis.

Abstract:A meso-structured Pd/NiO catalyst was successfully fabricated through a controlled pyrolysis and in situ reduction protocol. The resulting material possessed a relatively high surface area and highly dispersed palladium species. It showed much higher catalytic activity and stability for CO oxidation under ambient conditions. Complete CO conversion could be achieved at as low as similar to 20 degrees C, when 1.2 vol% H2O was introduced into the feed gas. The catalyst exhibited no detectable deactivation even after 100 hours of reaction. The extraordinary catalytic activity and durability were attributed to the promotion of the water molecules and the synergetic effect between the Pd nanoparticles and meso-structured NiO support.

Abstract:A facile one-pot co-precipitation approach was applied to fabricate a meso-structured Pd-CeOx composite for low temperature CO oxidation. The as-prepared material had a much higher specific area and highly dispersed noble metal species, and thus showed excellent catalytic activity and stability for CO oxidation, especially under ambient conditions. Complete CO conversion could be achieved at as low as 25 degrees C for 5.9 wt% Pd doped catalyst, when 3.0 vol% H2O was introduced into the feed gas. The reaction mechanism on such a catalyst has been proposed through in situ DRIFTS and kinetic analysis.

Abstract:Over the past decade, there has been significant research of Co3O4 catalysts for oxidation of carbon mono-oxide (CO) at low temperatures. However, development of water-resistant Co3O4 materials is still challenging. In this work, a novel oxygen vacancy-rich nitrogen-doped Co3O4 catalyst was developed using straightforward urea-assisted method. Nitrogen doping increases oxygen vacancies on the surface in Co3O4 as well as improves the activity of lattice oxygen. Comparing with pure Co3O4 and Co3O4 with less nitrogen doping, the as-synthesized nitrogen-doped Co3O4 exhibited significantly enhanced activity as well as water resistance in the catalytic oxidation of CO. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of CO oxidation on N-doped Co3O4, which provides a new strategy for developing highly active and water-resistant catalysts.

Abstract:A nanostructural catalyst with long-term durability under harsh conditions is very important for an outstanding catalytic performance. Herein, a new ultrastable PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocatalyst was explored to improve the catalytic performance of carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation by virtue of the surface active lattice oxygen derived from strong metal-support interactions. Such a structure can overcome the issues of Co3O4-SiO2 inactivation by water vapor and the Pt inferior activity at low temperature. Further, Co3O4-SiO2 nanosheets endow superior structure stability under high temperatures of up to 800 °C, which gives long-term catalytic cyclability of PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocomposites for CO oxidation. Moreover, the large specific surface areas (294 m2 g-1) of the nanosheet structure can expose abundant surface active lattice oxygen, which significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of CO oxidation at 50 °C over 30 days without apparent aggregation of PtCo nanoparticles after 20 cycles from 50 to 400 °C. It can be expected to be a promising candidate as an ultrastable efficient catalyst.

Abstract:In this innovative work, a series of CuO/TiO2/Ti monolithic catalysts were successfully synthesized using a scalable multistep method involving plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) and hydrothermal processes. The results revealed that the growth of CuO nanostructures can be controlled by varying the hydrothermal time. Specifically, the CuO/TiO2/Ti monolithic catalyst, obtained through a 1 h hydrothermal reaction (HR1), resulted in fine particle size, good dispersion, large specific surface area, especially sufficient Cu+ active sites, high oxygen vacancy concentration, and excellent redox ability. These attributes collectively ensured the efficient catalytic CO oxidation activity of the prepared catalysts. Moreover, the as-synthesized HR1 catalyst exhibited a remarkable ability to achieve 100% conversion at ∼107 °C, indicating enormous potential as a substitute for conventional noble metal catalysts. Furthermore, this study elucidates that the CO, adsorbed on the Cu+ sites, is oxidized by the lattice oxygen of CuO. The O2 present in the feed gas plays a crucial role in replenishing the oxygen vacancies created during this process, thereby facilitating efficient recycling of the catalytic reaction. The presented mechanism analysis of CuO/TiO2/Ti monolithic catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation provides a theoretical basis for the design of catalysts.

Low‐Temperature CO Oxidation over the Pt−TiN Interfacial Dual Sites

Abstract:The metal-support interfacial synergistic catalysis allows the competitive reaction steps to occur in close proximity at different sites, thus decreasing the activation barrier and improving the catalytic efficiency. Combining the structural characterization, reactivity assessments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is found that highly dispersed Pt clusters supported on TiN substrates favor the formation of Pt-TiN interfacial dual sites, which are highly reactive for the low-temperature CO oxidation with an apparent activation energy as low as 38.7 kJ mol-1 , much less than that on the traditional Pt/TiO2 or Pt/SiO2 catalysts. At low temperature, the surface sites of Pt are saturated with CO adsorption due to its high adsorption energy and the molecular O2 dissociatively adsorbs on the Ti sites to form the titanium oxynitride (TiNx Oy) skin with a low barrier of 0.1 eV. The O atoms binding on Ti sites readily react with the adjacent CO molecules adsorbed on the perimeter of Pt clusters to attain a catalytic cycle with a reaction barrier of 0.5 eV. The interfacial synergistic effect between Pt and TiN is the origin of the low temperature CO oxidation activity on the metal-nitride catalysts.

Abstract:A series of Mn-Co/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation method and evaluated for the oxidation of NO to NO2. The effects of Co amounts and calcination temperature on NO oxidation were investigated in detail. The catalytic oxidation ability in the temperature range of 403–473 K was obviously improved by doping cobalt into Mn/TiO2. These samples were characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and hydrogen temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR). The results indicated that the formation of dispersed Co3O4·CoMnO3 mixed oxides through synergistic interaction between Mn-O and Co-O was directly responsible for the enhanced activities towards NO oxidation at low temperatures. Doping of Co enhanced Mn4+ formation and increased chemical adsorbed oxygen amounts, which also accelerated NO oxidation.
Highly Efficient Nano-octahedral Au/γ-Fe2O3 Catalyst Synthesized by Dealloying Combined with Calcination for Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:Environmental pollution, especially air pollution, has become a critical issue requiring prompt resolution. Herein, we have synthesized a novel catalyst composed of nano-octahedral γ-Fe2O3 in situ loaded with Au nanoparticles through dealloying Al-Fe-Au alloy ribbons combined with calcination. The formation mechanism of this unique morphology was analyzed, and the catalyst's performance was evaluated through CO oxidation reactions. The test results indicate that the Au/γ-Fe2O3 catalyst can completely catalyze CO at 50 °C, and exhibits excellent stability and resistance to H2O and CO2 toxicity even under harsh testing conditions. Systematic characterization results reveal that the exceptional performance of the catalyst can be attributed to several key factors. These include the large specific surface area, well-defined nanoporous structure, efficient transfer of free electrons at the interface facilitated by the strong interactions between Au and the γ-Fe2O3 support, as well as the high concentration of oxygen vacancies and surface-active oxygen species present. Additionally, the potential conversion pathways of CO over the Au/γ-Fe2O3 catalyst were elucidated, revealing that they follow the Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Mars-van Krevelen mechanisms under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. This study is expected to provide novel insights into the green synthesis of highly active and stable nanoporous catalysts.

Enhanced CO oxidation performance over hierarchical flower-like Co 3 O 4 based nanosheets via optimizing oxygen activation and CO chemisorption

Abstract:Enhancing low-temperature activity is a focus for carbon monoxide (CO) elimination by catalytic oxidation. In this work, the hierarchical flower-like silver (Ag) modified cobalt oxides (Co 3 O 4 ) nanosheets were prepared by solvothermal method and applied into catalytic CO oxidation. The doped Ag species in the form of AgCoO 2 induced the prolongated surface Co–O bond and weaker bond intensity. Consequently, the oxygen activation/migration ability and redox capacity of Ag 0.02 Co were enhanced with more oxygen vacancies. The chemisorbed CO was preferentially converted to CO 2 but not carbonates. The inhibited carbonates accumulation could avoid the coverage of active sites. According to Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the electron transfer from AgCoO 2 to Co 3 O 4 promote electron donation ability of Co 3 O 4 layer, benefiting for oxygen activation. Moreover, the longer Co–C and C–O bond length suggest the weakened chemisorption strength and higher active of CO molecule. The Ag modified Co 3 O 4 exhibited more satisfactory activity at lower temperature. Typically, it realized 100% CO conversion at 90 °C, and displayed 6.3-fold higher reaction rate than pristine Co 3 O 4 at 40 °C. Moreover, the Ag 0.02 Co exhibited outstanding long-term stability and water resistance. In summary, the optimized oxygen activation, CO chemisorption and interfacial electron transfer synergistically boosted the CO oxidation activity on Ag modified Co 3 O 4 .

Abstract:A series of interlaced "tripe-shaped" nanoflake catalysts made of CuMn2O4 were in-situ prepared on Ti mesh substrate through the associated method of plasma electrolyte oxidation and hydrothermal technique. The surface morphology, elemental distribution and chemical state, phase composition and microstructure of CuMn2O4 nanostructures prepared under different conditions were investigated by SEM, EDS, XRD, XPS and TEM analysis. To evaluate the catalytic activity, the CO oxidation as a probe reaction was used, and the results showed that 12h-Cu1Mn2-300 (hydrothermal reaction at 150 °C for 12 h, Cu/Mn = 1/2 in initial precursor, heat treatment temperature at 300 °C) exhibited the best CO oxidation capability with T100 = 148 °C owe to the formation of uniform CuMn2O4 nanosheet layers in-situ grown on flexible Ti mesh and the synergistic effect of Cu and Mn species in spinel CuMn2O4, which makes it more active towards CO oxidation than pure copper/manganese oxide.

Abstract:Highly efficient Co3O4/TiO2 monolithic catalysts with enhanced stability were in-situ grown on Ti mesh for CO oxidation, which could completely oxidize CO at 120 °C. The comprehensive catalytic performance is competitive to some noble metal catalysts and conventional Co3O4 powder catalysts, which holds great potential toward industrial applications. Meanwhile, the in-situ synthesis strategy of Co3O4/TiO2 monolithic catalysts on flexible mesh substrate in this work can be extended to the development of a variety of oxide-based monolithic catalysts towards diverse catalysis applications.

Abstract:Spinel-type Co3O4 has been reported to be the only transition metal oxide to date, which exhibits excellent catalytic activity for low temperature CO oxidation. But unfortunately, it is quickly deactivated by moisture. Here we report a Fe-doped Co3O4 spinel catalyst which demonstrates high activity and excellent moisture resistance for low temperature CO oxidation, especially at a low CO concentration of around 100 ppm which mimics the situations in automobile road tunnels and indoor parks.

Abstract:Stabilized Cu+ species have been widely considered as catalytic active sites in composite copper catalysts for catalytic reactions with industrial importance. However, few examples comprehensively explicated the origin of stabilized Cu+ in a low-cost and widely investigated CuO/TiO2 system. In this study, mass producible CuO/TiO2 catalysts with interface-stabilized Cu+ were prepared, which showed excellent low-temperature CO oxidation activity. A thorough characterization and theoretical calculations proved that the strong charge-transfer effect and Ti-O-Cu hybridization in Ti-doped CuO(111) at the CuO/TiO2 interface contributed to the formation and stabilization of Cu+ species. The CO molecule adsorbed on Cu+ and reacted directly with Ti doping-promoted active lattice oxygen via a Mars-van Krevelen mechanism, leading to the enhanced low-temperature activity.
