Abstract:Lignin, the planet's most abundant renewable source of aromatic compounds, is difficult to degrade efficiently to welldefined aromatics. We developed a microwave-assisted catalytic Swern oxidation system using an easily prepared catalyst, MoO2Cl2(DMSO)(2), and DMSO as the solvent and oxidant. It demonstrated high efficiency in transforming lignin model compounds containing the units and functional groups found in native lignins. The aromatic ring substituents strongly influenced the selectivity of -ether phenolic dimer cleavage to generate sinapaldehyde and coniferaldehyde, monomers not usually produced by oxidative methods. Time-course studies on two key intermediates provided insight into the reaction pathway. Owing to the broad scope of this oxidation system and the insight gleaned with regard to its mechanism, this strategy could be adapted and applied in a general sense to the production of useful aromatic chemicals from phenolics and lignin.

Abstract:The effective cleavage of C-O bonds in linkages of lignin was one of the significant strategies promoting lignin valorization. Herein, the strategy of C-O bonds cleavage of lignin using metal triflate as the catalyst was developed. The carboxylic acid or alcohol could be used as the nucleophile to stabilize the reactive intermediates formed during the depolymerization of lignin, and the corresponding ester/ether compounds could be obtained. This catalytic system was suitable for the C-O bond cleavage in α-O-4 and β-O-4 linkages with excellent efficiency. Additionally, reaction conditions were optimized. The reaction mixture was detected by 1 H NMR, and no other byproducts were found. As for treated lignin samples, the cleavage of C-O bonds in linkages was determined by 2D HSQC NMR, the increased content of the phenol hydroxyl group was proved by FT-IR, and the reduced molecular weight was investigated by GPC. Furthermore, multiple phenolic compounds were detected by GC-MS in the reaction mixtures.
Hydrogenolysis and Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin in a Two-Step Process to Produce Hydrocarbons and Alkylphenols

Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.

Abstract:A novel strategy for the oxidative cleavage of C-C and C-O bonds in a series of model substrates including beta-O-4 lignin model compounds using CuCl2/polybenzoxazine composites catalysts with H2O2 as oxidant at room temperature showed good conversions (up to 88%) and an over 96% total selectivity to aromatic monomers within 2 h. This approach then succeeded in application to actual lignin depolymerization monitored by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), H-1 NMR, and 2D-NMR (HSQC). The results suggest that lignin can be effectively degraded into an array of functionalized dimer trimeric aromatic acids, aldehydes, phenols, etc., obtained from the selective cleavage of aliphatic C-C and C-O bonds in the major linkages beta-O-4' aryl ethers, resinols, and p-hydroxycinnamyl alcohols while leaving the natural aromaticity intact. Furthermore, the mechanistic insights into the catalytic reactions reveal a two-electron transfer process involved with a phenoxy radical, and an oxidation-then-cleavage route proposed for lignin depolymerization. The clean process, mild reaction conditions, and high aromatics selectivity indicate that it is a promising heterogeneous catalytic system for oxidative depolymerization of lignin to valuable aromatic chemicals.

Abstract:Selective cleavage of the aromatic CO bonds in lignin is a crucial step for lignin valorization to produce value-added chemicals, however, the development of efficient catalysts for mild conversions is still challenging. Herein, non-precious skeletal CuZnAl catalysts were firstly reported for the depolymerisation of lignin dimers and real organosolv lignin via the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) method. Typical lignin dimers, including α-O-4, β-O-4 and 4-O-5 types, were all effectively converted to the corresponding aromatics and alcohols in isopropanol under mild reaction condition. Furthermore, birch organosolv lignin was also well depolymerized into monophenols in 56.1 wt% yield. Experiments revealed that the water brought by the wet catalyst effectively promoted the CO bond cleavage, but slightly decreased the catalyst reactivity toward hydrogenation in isopropanol. Reaction evolution profiles and control experiments suggested that three reaction pathways were included, with the CO ether bond cleavage and subsequent hydrogenolysis taking precedence over the dehydrogenation or hydrodeoxygenation routes. This work provides an economical and environmentally-friendly method for the selective cleavage of lignin and lignin model compounds into value-added chemicals, which holds great promise in industrial application.

Abstract:Despite the promise of photocatalysis for extracting aromatic compounds from renewable lignin feedstocks, the selective cleavage of C α –C β bonds in lignin under mild conditions poses a persistent challenge, primarily due to their elevated dissociation energies and steric hindrance. Herein, an efficient photocatalytic strategy for selectively breaking the C α –C β bonds of lignin with visible-light irradiation and room temperature is proposed, facilitated by the Zn(II)-doped porous graphitic carbon nitride (Zn/CN) photocatalyst. Reduced energy band gap and photoluminescence, along with intensified visible-light absorption and enhanced photocurrent of Zn/CN, contribute to its efficacy in photocatalytic activity. Consequently, the lignin model compound (2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol) achieves a conversion rate of 99 %, demonstrating a notable selectivity of 97 % in specifically breaking the C α –C β bonds. Mechanistic investigations identify that photogenerated holes play a pivotal role during the photocatalytic conversion. Additionally, the activity and selectivity of Zn/CN photocatalyst are further confirmed by the successful photocatalytic conversion of pine kraft lignin, yielding high-value chemicals such as benzoic acid and vanillin. This research proposes an economical, efficient, and facile method for utilizing renewable lignin feedstocks under photocatalysis, thus advancing the production of high-value aromatic compounds.

Abstract:It is challenging to realize the selective C‐C bond cleavage of lignin β‐O‐4 linkages for production of high‐value aromatic chemicals due to its intrinsic inertness and complex structure. Here we report a light‐driven, chlorine‐radical‐based protocol to realize the oxidative C‐C bond cleavage in various lignin model compounds catalyzed by commercially available TPT and CaCl2, achieving high conversion and good to high product yields at room temperature. Mechanistic studies reveal that the preferential activation of Cβ‐H bond facilitates the oxidation and C‐C bond cleavage of lignin β‐O‐4 model via chlorine radical. Furthermore, this method is also applicable to the depolymerization of natural lignin extracts, furnishing the aromatic oxygenates from the cleavage of Cα‐Cβ bonds. This study provides experimental foundations to the depolymerization and valorization of lignin into high value‐added aromatic compounds.

Abstract:Lignins isolated from representative hardwood, softwood, and grass materials were effectively hydrocracked to aromatics catalyzed by tungsten carbide over activated carbon (W2C/AC). The effects of botanical species and fractionation methods on lignin structure and the activity of W2C/AC were studied in detail. Gas permeation chromatography (GPC), FTIR, elemental analysis, and 2D HSQC NMR showed that all the extracted samples shared the basic skeleton of lignin, whereas the fractionation method significantly affected the structure. The organosolv process provided lignin with a structure more similar to the native lignin, which was labile to be depolymerized by W2C/AC. Softwood lignins (i.e., spruce and pine) possessed higher molecular weights than hardwood lignins (i.e., poplar and basswood); whereas corn stalk lignin that has noncanonical subunits and exhibited the lowest molecular weight owing to its shorter growth period. beta-O-4 bonds were the major linkages in all lignin samples, whereas softwood lignins contained more resistant linkages of beta-5 and less beta-beta than corn stalk and hardwood lignins; as a result, lowest hydrocracking efficiency was obtained in softwood lignins, followed by corn stalk and hardwood lignins. 2D HSQC NMR spectra of lignin and the liquid oil as well as the solid residue showed that W2C/AC exhibited high activity not only in beta-O-4 cleavage, but also in deconstruction of other ether linkages between aromatic units, so that high yield of liquid oil was obtained from lignin.

Abstract:The valorization of native lignin to functionalized aromatic compounds under visible light is appealing yet challenging. In this communication, colloidal mercaptoalkanoic acid capped ultrathin ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) microbelts was successfully fabricated, which was used as a superior catalyst for depolymerization of native lignin in birch woodmeal under visible light, with an optimum yield of 28.8 wt% to functionalized aromatic monomers achieved in 8 h. The capped mercaptoalkanoic acid not only enables a solvent modulated reversible interchange of ZIS between the colloidal state for efficient reaction and the aggregated state for facile separation, but also serves as a precursor for light initiated generation of reactive thiyl radical for highly selective cleavage of β-O-4 bond in native lignin. This work provides a green and efficient strategy for the depolymerization of native lignin to functionalized aromatic monomers under mild conditions, which involves a new mechanism for the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds in native lignin. The capability of cleavage of β-O-4 bonds in native lignin by photogenerated thiyl radicals also demonstrates the great potential of using photogenerated thiyl radicals in organics transformations.

Abstract:Lignin is the most promising candidate for producing aromatic compounds from biomass. However, the challenge lies in the cleavage of C-C bonds between lignin monomers under mild conditions, as these bonds have high dissociation energy. Electrochemical oxidation, which allows for mild cleavage of C-C bonds, is considered an attractive solution. To achieve low-energy consumption in the valorization of lignin, the use of highly efficient electrocatalysts is essential. In this study, a meticulously designed catalyst consisting of cobalt-doped nickel (oxy)hydroxide on molybdenum disulfide heterojunction was developed. The presence of molybdenum in a high valence state promoted the adsorption of tert-butyl hydroperoxide, leading to the formation of critical radical intermediates. In addition, the incorporation of cobalt doping regulated the electronic structure of nickel, resulting in a lower energy barrier. As a result, the heterojunction catalyst demonstrated a selectivity of 85.36% for cleaving the Cα-Cβ bond in lignin model compound, achieving a substrate conversion of 93.69% under ambient conditions. In addition, the electrocatalyst depolymerized 49.82 wt% of soluble fractions from organosolv lignin (OL), resulting in a yield of up to 13 wt% of aromatic monomers. Significantly, the effectiveness of the prepared electrocatalyst was also demonstrated using industrial Kraft lignin (KL). Therefore, this research offers a practical approach for implementing electrocatalytic oxidation in lignin refining.

Abstract:Lignin is an important biomass resource to replace petrochemical industry for carbon neutrality. However, it is challenged by unyielding the trade-off between activity and selectivity owing to the chemical complexity and inherent heterogeneity of lignin biomacromolecule. Herein, we report that copper nanomaterial (CuO/C) derived from metal-organic framework (HKUST-1) could effectively catalytic hydrogenolysis of herbaceous plants into monomeric phenols (up to 29.5 wt%) through a lignin-first strategy, affording methyl 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate ( 1-H ) and methyl 3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) propionate ( 2-G ) as the main monophenols with high selectivity of 31.9% and 17.3%. Moreover, we proposed two synthetic routes based on the purification and functionalization of those two compounds ( 1-H and 2-G ) to synthesis 3-(4-carboxyphenyl) propionic acid and functional polyesters. Subsequent studies revealed that the temperature of 50% mass loss of the two polyesters reached 430–440 °C, indicating their robust thermal stability; while the DSC curves showed the difference between the two polymers in glass conversion temperature (T g ) and crystallization. In brief, this work opens a new avenue for the production of lignin-derived chemicals and materials.

Abstract:Efficient conversion of renewable lignin into value-added chemicals and biofuel is of great importance for the sustainable development of biorefineries. However, lignin valorization is highly restricted by its structural variation and complexity. In this regard, we have produced a series of lignins extracted from grass, hardwood, and softwood and focused on scrutinizing their structural variability and key characteristics to provide structural insights into fast and selective production of aromatics. As an energy-efficient approach, microwave-assisted hydrothermal liquefaction without introducing an external oxygen was performed to facilitate the base-catalyzed depolymerization of lignin under moderate conditions. The general applicability of this approach was proved on five different lignins. High yields (58.5–78.6%) of low-molecular-weight bio-oil from all lignins were obtained only after 1 min at 220 °C. In particular, a high ratio of cleavable β–O–4 linkage of grass lignin enabled a fast monomer production, while its specific p-coumaric acid moieties allowed a high monomer selectivity to 4-vinylphenol of 66%. A difference in the product distribution was systematically investigated through a comprehensive analysis of lignin characteristics (e.g., interlinkage, S/G/H unit, and molecular weight) and stability studies of main monomeric products. These results revealed the fast degradation of reactive intermediates (aldehydes and S-type products) and how the monomer’s stability/reactivity affects the selective production. Alongside reaction parameters, several critical factors governing the lignin conversion were further identified by calculating the Pearson correlation coefficient between lignin characteristics and the conversion efficiency. The lignin structure–property–degradability relationships and reaction mechanisms are expounded and updated to foster efficient lignin utilization.

Abstract:Lignin has recently attracted much attention as a promising resource to produce fuels and aromatic chemicals. The selective cleavage of C-O bond while preserving the aromatic nature has become one of the major challenges in the catalytic valorization of lignin to aromatic chemicals. In this work, we report that the selective reductive cleavage of C-O bond in lignin model compounds can be successfully achieved through heterogeneous iron catalysis. The hydrogenolysis of alpha-O-4 model linkage shows that the iron catalyst prepared by the simultaneous pyrolysis of iron acetate and 1,10-phenanthroline on activated carbon at 800 degrees C is the most active iron catalyst, affording phenol and toluene with yields of 95% and 90%, respectively. This aromatics selectivity is found to be much higher than that obtained over noble metal catalysts. The presence of N center dot center dot center dot Fe species as the active center of heterogeneous iron catalyst was confirmed by various technologies especially XPS and H-2-TPR. For the beta-O-4 model linkage, the vicinal -OH group was essential for the iron-catalyzed hydrogenolysis of ether linkage. The oxidation of the alpha-carbon in the beta-O-4 model compounds can significantly decrease the bond dissociation energy of ether linkage, giving depolymerization products in moderate to excellent yields.
Depolymerization of Methylene Linkage in Condensed Lignin with Commercial Zeolite in Water

Abstract:Lignin, an aromatic polymer, is a crucial component of lignocellulosic biomass and is a significant source of renewable aromatics found in nature. Lignin constitutes up to 30 wt % of lignocellulosic biomass and is generated in excess of 100 million tons per year from global paper and bio-ethanol industries. Unfortunately, most technical lignin produced in this manner is burned as a heat source, without any value-added valorization. The conversion of technical lignin into valuable compounds can significantly increase the profitability of biorefineries. However, the productivity of this process is constrained by the severe lignin condensation that occurs during extraction procedures, resulting in the formation of robust C–C bonds, such as methylene linkages, which lead to monomer yields of only 8–15%. Herein, we present an approach to overcome this limitation by producing well-defined aromatic monomers from condensed lignin fractions. The approach employs commercial zeolite-catalyzed cleavage of methylene linkages with water as both the reacting medium and the reactant. Up to 7–10% of additional aromatic monomers can be obtained from various types of technical lignin, thus increasing the total monomer yields by 59–102%. The findings of this study present a promising avenue for the valorization of technical lignin and offer potential for the development of circular economy.

Selective Hydrogenolysis of Lignin Model Compounds to Aromatics over a Cobalt Nanoparticle Catalyst

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of renewable lignin to aromatics can effectively alleviate the fossil resource crisis. Herein, we prepared porous nitrogen-doped carbon-supported cobalt nanoparticle catalyst (CoNC) using a SiO2 template and tested its catalytic performance for cleavage of the β-O-4 ether bond in lignin model compounds. It was found that the catalyst pyrolyzed in a nitrogen atmosphere at 900 °C (CoNC-900) could catalyze 2-phenoxyacetophenone to ethylbenzene and phenol effectively, affording both in 99.0% yields. Further study indicated that the catalytic system was efficient for transformation of various β-O-4 ketones with methoxyl groups with high yields of desired products. The excellent catalytic performance was related to the cobalt nanoparticles, large pore volume, and specific surface area. Furthermore, the catalyst could be reused five times without obvious loss of the activity, indicating its stability during the reaction process. Abstract:The electrochemical selective oxidative transformation of lignin feedstocks into valuable oxygenated aromatics is essential to establish a sustainable biorefinery. In this study, we used a rhombohedral ZnIn 2 S 4 (R-ZIS) electrocatalyst to realise the efficient anodic cleavage of C-O bonds in benzyl phenyl ether (BPE), an α-O-4 lignin model compound, to a series of industrially relevant oxygenated mono-aromatics. The reaction occurred at +2 V Ag/AgCl , 65 °C, and atmospheric pressure. In optimised conditions, the reaction achieved over 99% conversion rate with a Faraday efficiency of 51.6% at 91.3% conversion of BPE, that is greater than most known electrocatalytic oxidative cleavage examples. The ZnIn 2 S 4 electrocatalyst was deposited on a carbon support, and its structural properties and surface morphology were extensively investigated. Systematic chronoamperometric electrolysis coupled with 18 O isotopic labelling confirmed that C-O scission occurred exclusively between the benzylic carbon and phenolic oxygen. Furthermore, substrate competition studies were conducted to compare the electrocatalytic performance of the R-ZIS catalyst with that of its structural analogue, hexagonal ZnIn 2 S 4 , in terms of BPE and mono-aromatics conversion. The experimental results were supported by density functional theory calculations. The substrate scopeing study revealed the suitability of the R-ZIS induced electrocatalytic system for a variety of substituted α-O-4 and β-O-4 model dimers. Overall, this work demonstrates an efficient anodic process that can enable the atom-efficient valorisation of lignin to produce oxygenated aromatics. The proposed approach can complement the numerous existing reductive lignin cleavage methods.

Abstract:Because of the complex structure and inherent inert chemical activity of lignin, it is still challenging to depolymerize lignin to obtain valuable chemicals efficiently. Here, we present an FeCl3-promoted photocatalytic depolymerization strategy to realize the Cα-Cβ oxidative cleavage of lignin model compounds at room temperature. The method generates benzoic acid and phenol compounds in high yields. In addition, the method is effective for the depolymerization of organosolv lignin by cleavage of the products of Cα-Cβ bonds and affords the corresponding products. This strategy provides a method of using an economical photocatalyst to depolymerize lignin and provides a reference for the industrial depolymerization of lignin.

Abstract:Lignin valorization to aromatic fine chemicals requires selective cleavage of a high-energy C-C bond under mild conditions. Herein, we report the efficient and selective C-C bond cleavage of lignin model substrates through a chlorine (Cl) atom as the hydrogen atom transfer agent generated by visible-light excitation of the metal-free photocatalyst perylene diimide. With the assistance of the Cl atom, the overall yield of C-C bond cleavage products in model substrate beta-O-4 linkages reached 82.5% under visible-light excitation. This work makes use of metal-free photocatalysts and ubiquitous chloride as an alternative sustainable method for lignin depolymerization.
