Abstract:Activated carbon has potential in energy storage and conversion, however, conventional methods often struggle to enhance specific surface area and control pore structure precisely, hindering its application in hydrogen storage and electrochemical fields. Therefore, this study aims to utilize pine sawdust as carbon precursor and employ "restricted activation" technology to regulate the specific surface area and pore structure of carbon materials, thereby enhancing their performance in hydrogen and electrochemical energy storage. Results demonstrate activated carbon's exceptional microporous structure and specific surface area, leading to outstanding hydrogen storage (achieving a capacity of 7.73 wt% at 77 K and 40 bar) and electrochemical properties (with the highest energy density of 12.92 Wh center dot kg- 1 and power density of 125 W kg- 1). A comprehensive array of contrasting results has revealed that while micropores experience single-layer adsorption, the engagement of certain micropores and small mesopores in the physical adsorption process markedly boosts hydrogen storage capacity. This investigation sheds light on the relationship between material structure and storage performance, offering insights into multifunction carbon materials for high-capacity hydrogen storage and superior electrochemical performance.
Comprehensive Analysis of Biochar-Based Co2 Capture

Abstract:This work focuses on a comprehensive investigation of three types of lignocellulosic biochar for post-combustion carbon capture technology, i.e., bamboo charcoal biochar, wood pellet biochar, and coconut shell biochar. Each biochar is structurally enhanced through physical (H2O, CO2) and chemical (ZnCl2, KOH, H3PO4) activation, thus making the biochar more conducive to adsorption carbon capture. Three methods (CO2 adsorption isotherms, CO2 fixed-bed adsorption, and thermogravimetric analysis) are used to determine CO2 adsorption capacity, in which the capacity of biochar samples was more significant than 2.35 mmolÂ·g-1 (1 bar, 298K). The results showed that the efficiency of CO2 capture by lignocellulosic biochar not only depends on the single nature of the microporous structure but also has a positive correlation with biochar textural properties (surface area and pore volume). Furthermore, the O*/C ratio and pore width show a negative correlation with the CO2 capture capacity of biochars. Therefore, the comprehensive analysis of CO2 adsorption properties of different biochar under various activation conditions provides the direction for selecting biochar activation methods and accurately achieving biochar pore generation.
Superior CO2 Adsorption on Pine Nut Shell-Derived Activated Carbons and the Effective Micropores at Different Temperatures

Abstract:Pine nut shell-derived activated carbons were prepared at different KOH/C mass ratios and activation temperatures, and they were used to adsorb CO2 at different adsorption temperatures and pressures. The optimal activated carbon had the CO2 adsorption of up to 7.7mmol/g at 273K and 5.0mmol/g at 298K at 1bar, the highest capacities at ambient pressure among all the biomass-derived carbons. The micropore distribution of activated carbons was highly dependent on the KOH/C ratio and activation temperature in the preparation. The activated carbons with larger micropores suffered the greater loss of CO2 adsorbed amounts at high adsorption temperatures. The accurate ranges of micropores responsible for CO2 adsorption at different temperatures were fully studied. When the adsorption temperature increased from 273 to 348K, the ranges of effective micropore for CO2 adsorption at 1bar narrowed from 0.33–0.82nm to 0.33–0.52nm. Under typical flue gas conditions at 348K and CO2 partial pressure of 0.15bar, the effective micropore range decreased to 0.33–0.40nm, and the CO2 adsorbed amount was about 0.7mmol/g on p-2–973–1.5. The accurate micropore ranges obtained are helpful in the preparation and selection of efficient activated carbons for CO2 adsorption under different conditions.

Abstract:The new adsorption-enhanced compressed CO2 energy storage technology uses high-performance adsorbents to adsorb and store CO2 in low-pressure tanks, reducing vessel costs while significantly increasing energy storage density. In this paper, porous biochar with excellent CO2 adsorption capacity is prepared by carbonization combined with KOH chemical activation using pine nut shells, which can be used for the energy storage system. The influence of pore structure is revealed by changing the activation temperature. The results show that the activity of KOH is moderate at 700 degrees C, which can promote the formation of ultramicropores. The specific surface area of the obtained porous biochar is 1027 m(2)center dot g(-1), the distribution center of ultramicropores is about 0.65 nm, and the microporosity can up to 91.7%, which is very suitable for CO2 adsorption under atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The CO2 adsorption capacities are 6.05 mmol center dot g(-1) and 3.96 mmol center dot g(-1) at 1 bar, 273 K and 298 K with the pore volume is only 0.56 cm3 center dot g(-1). The material also has a low value of isosteric heat of adsorption about 25 kJ center dot mol(-1). These findings suggest that pine nut shells can be used to design highly porous biochar for the system of new adsorption-enhanced compressed CO2 energy storage.

Resorcinol–formaldehyde Resin-Based Porous Carbon Spheres with High CO2 Capture Capacities

Abstract:Porous carbon spheres are prepared by direct carbonization of potassium salt of resorcinol-formaldehyde resin spheres, and are investigated as CO2 adsorbents. It is found that the prepared carbon materials still maintain the typical spherical shapes after the activation, and have highly developed ultra-microporosity with uniform pore size, indicating that almost the activation takes place in the interior of the polymer spheres. The narrow-distributed ultra-micropores are attributed to the "in-situ homogeneous activation" effect produced by the mono-dispersed potassium ions as a form of -OK groups in the bulk of polymer spheres. The CS-1 sample prepared under a KOH/resins weight ratio of 1 shows a very high CO2 capture capacity of 4.83 mmol/g and good CO2/N-2 selectivity of similar to 17-45. We believe that the presence of a welldeveloped ultra-microporosity is responsible for excellent CO2 sorption performance at room temperature and ambient pressure. Activated Carbons Prepared from Peanut Shell and Sunflower Seed Shell for High CO2 Adsorption

Abstract:Biomass wastes are considered as cost-effective and sustainable precursors to prepare activated carbons for CO2 capture. In this study, two biomass-derived activated carbons were prepared using peanut shell and sunflower seed shell, and the optimal activated carbons were obtained at low KOH/carbon ratio of about 1. The peanut shell derived activated carbon (P-973-1.00) and sunflower seed shell derived activated carbon (S-973-1.25) exhibited CO2 uptake of 1.54 and 1.46 mmol/g, respectively, at 298 K and 0.15 bar, among the activated carbons with the highest CO2 adsorption. Although P-973-1.00 had much lower surface area and micropore volume than S-973-1.25, it possessed higher CO2 uptake at 298 K and 0.15 bar due to the higher volume of micropores in the range of 0.3–0.44 nm. The calculated higher isosteric heat values at lower CO2 uptake indicated the strong affinity of CO2 in these micropores. The ordered micro-sized pores in the activated carbons were favorable for CO2 diffusion into the porous materials and adsorption in the inner micropores. The activated carbons had moderate CO2 selectivity over N2 at 1 bar, but the selectivity was significantly enhanced at 0.15 bar. The spent activated carbons after vacuum regeneration exhibited stable CO2 adsorption in five cycles, showing the high reusability for CO2 capture.

Abstract:CO2 adsorption is one of the promising CCS technologies, and activated coke is a solid adsorbent with excellent adsorption properties. In this study, activated coke was prepared by using bituminous coal and coconut shells activated with KOH or CaCl2 in a physically activated atmosphere and modified with ammonia. The effect of the active agent impregnation ratio on the physicochemical properties of activated coke was investigated by N2 adsorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). The CO2 adsorption performance of activated coke was tested, and the effect of nitrogen-containing functional groups on CO2 adsorption was investigated by experiments and simulations. The results showed that the specific surface area of activated coke reached 629.81 m2/g at a KOH impregnation ratio of 0.5 and 610.66 m2/g at a CaCl2 impregnation ratio of 1. The maximum CO2 adsorption capacity of activated coke reached 71.70 mg/g and 90.99 mg/g for conventional power plant flue gas and oxy–fuel combustion flue gas, respectively. After ammonia modification, the CO2 adsorption capacity of activated coke was further increased. Simulations showed that pyrrole and pyrrole functional groups changed the polarity of graphene and established weak interactions with CO2.

Cost-effective carbon-based amine adsorbents for carbon capture: Equilibrium, kinetics and selectivity

Abstract:The rise in atmospheric CO2 levels is generating alarm with an urgency to develop carbon removal technology. As a promising post-combustion capture method, adsorption process using materials e.g. biochar-based activated carbon (AC) has received increasing attention. Thus, two types of coconut shell (CS) derived ACs that secondary activated by KOH and NaOH are investigated in terms of textural properties, CO2 adsorption behaviors and desorption temperatures. It is demonstrated that KOH shows a better activation effect on capture performance than NaOH, and chemical CS-KOH (CHCS-KOH) could reach the highest BET surface area of 1701.39 m2 g-1 and CO2 uptake of 2.11 mmol g-1 at 0 degrees C, 0.15 bar and 4.17 mmol g-1 at 20 degrees C, 1 bar, respectively. Dynamic adsorption data are well fitted by a pseudo second-order kinetic model, and the samples could be completely desorbed at 40 degrees C. To further explore CO2 uptake and H2O/CO2 adsorption selectivity, amine (PEI/TEPA) modifications are proposed. The results suggest an enhanced adsorption performance of PEI&CHCS-KOH com-posites under humid flue gas with volume ratio of water in the range of 5-15 vol%, which exhibits the highest promoting effect to 1.81 mmol g-1 at 20 degrees C, 0.15 bar with 100% RH 15 vol% H2O for 1 wt% composite. Prominent cost benefit has also been revealed in comparison with PEI&silica gel under the condition of dry and humid conditions, along with superior cyclic stability, which indicates potential application in carbon capture.
CO2adsorption on Crab Shell Derived Activated Carbons: Contribution of Micropores and Nitrogen-Containing Groups

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped activated carbons with high and selective CO2 adsorption are attractive for carbon capture, but the contribution of nitrogen-containing groups to CO2 adsorption has not been clearly elucidated. In this study, crab shells are used as a carbon precursor for the preparation of effective N-containing activated carbons for CO2 adsorption. The activated carbon prepared at a KOH/C mass ratio of 1.5 and activation temperature of 650 degrees C has the highest CO2 adsorption of 1.57 mmol g(-1) at 0.15 bar & 25 degrees C and 4.37 mmol g(-1) at 1 bar & 25 degrees C. The activated carbon also exhibits better adsorption selectivity for CO2 than conventional activated carbons, and the content of pyrrolic-N in the activated carbons shows a positive relationship with CO2/N-2 selectivity. The activated carbons prepared under different activation conditions contain 5.1-8.5% nitrogen in the form of pyridinic-N, pyrrolic-N, quaternary nitrogen, and pyridinic-N-oxide, accounting for at least 0.9-78.2% contribution to CO2 adsorption at 25 degrees C & 1 bar. About 45.1-47.3% of doped nitrogen is verified to be pyrrolic-N via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, which is effective for CO2 adsorption. However, the effective micropores are mainly responsible for CO2 adsorption on the well-developed activated carbons via a micropore filling mechanism.

Abstract:The CO 2 capture by absorbent shows a great promise to remit the pressure of CO 2 discharge. The functionalization of N surfaces and the development of the surface area in activation modification have received a great deal of attention as important factors influencing CO 2 adsorption performance. However, the role of ultra-micropores in the capture by size matching of CO 2 by adjusting the CO 2 size and the absorbent pore structure has been less studied to some extent. The study provides a simple one-step chemical activation method, in which cotton fibers were utilized as biomass sources to construct ultra-microporous carbon absorbent with a simple and effective tunable pore structure by changing the alkali-carbon ratio and activation temperature. The series of samples both showed high CO 2 adsorption at normal pressure, in particular, the optimal sample CC2-800 affords 4.43 mmol g −1 CO 2 uptake at 298 K and 6.58 mmol g −1 CO 2 uptake at 273 K. Impressively, the optimal adsorbent was endowed with extremely low adsorption heat, thereby showing good reversibility and reusability during multiple-cycle tests at room temperature. By a comprehensive study of the structural characteristics of the adsorbent, this research further validates the significant role of ultra-micropores in CO 2 adsorption. Additionally, the simple one-step preparation process shows crucial significance for sustainable development and environmental friendliness, which provides some interesting insights for the design and development of ultra-microporous activated carbon.

Abstract:Cost-effective biomass-derived activated carbons with a high CO(2) adsorption capacity are attractive for carbon capture. Bamboo was found to be a suitable precursor for activated carbon preparation through KOH activation. The bamboo size in the range of 10-200 mesh had little effect on CO(2) adsorption, whereas the KOH/C mass ratio and activation temperature had a significant impact on CO(2) adsorption. The bamboo-derived activated carbon had a high adsorption capacity and excellent selectivity for CO(2) , and also the adsorption process was highly reversible. The adsorbed amount of CO(2) on the granular activated carbon was up to 7.0 mmol g(-1) at 273 K and 1 bar, which was higher than almost all carbon materials. The pore characteristics of activated carbons responsible for high CO(2) adsorption were fully investigated. Based on the analysis of narrow micropore size distribution of several activated carbons prepared under different conditions, a more accurate micropore range contributing to CO(2) adsorption was proposed. The volume of micropores in the range of 0.33-0.82 nm had a good linear relationship with CO(2) adsorption at 273 K and 1 bar, and the narrow micropores of about 0.55 nm produced the major contribution, which could be used to evaluate CO(2) adsorption on activated carbons.
Porous activated carbons derived from waste sugarcane bagasse for CO2 adsorption

Abstract:Business cost concern of solid CO2 adsorbents has motivated the production of porous activated carbons from waste biomass materials. In this work, porous activated carbons were prepared from sugarcane bagasse using different activating agents (air, CO2, H3PO4 and NaOH). Chemically activated porous carbons exhibited better physicochemical properties as compared to the physically activated carbons. Particularly, NaOH-activated carbon (CAC-S) featured a high specific surface area (1149 m2/g) and a large pore volume (1.73 cm3/g). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed that the CAC-S adsorbent exhibited enhanced total basicity. The desired CAC-S adsorbent showed superior isothermal CO2 uptakes of 5.50 and 4.28 mmol CO2/g at 0 °C and 25 °C and 1 bar. The isosteric heat of adsorption was predicted as 43.96 kJ/mol from the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and Toth model, which indicated intensified interaction between CO2 molecules and the basic carbon surface. The excellent CO2 adsorption performance should be associated with the improved textural properties and enriched surface basicity benefited from NaOH activation. Overall, CAC-S is considered as a promising adsorbent for CO2 adsorption. The recycling of sugarcane bagasse as solid CO2 adsorbents presents environmental implications with respect to waste management and pollutants mitigation.

Abstract:Rapidly increasing concentration of CO 2 in the atmosphere has drawn more and more attention in recent years, and adsorption has been considered as an effective technology for CO 2 capture from the anthropogenic sources. In this paper, the attractive adsorbents including activated carbons and amine-modified materials were mainly reviewed and discussed with particular attention on progress in the adsorbent preparation and CO 2 adsorption capacity. Carbon materials can be prepared from different precursors including fossil fuels, biomass and resins using the carbonization-activation or only activation process, and activated carbons prepared by KOH activation with high CO 2 adsorbed amount were reviewed in the preparation, adsorption capacity as well as the relationship between the pore characteristics and CO 2 adsorption. For the amine-modified materials, the physical impregnation and chemical graft of polyethylenimine (PEI) on the different porous materials were introduced in terms of preparation method and adsorption performance as well as their advantages and disadvantages for CO 2 adsorption. In the last section, the issues and prospect of solid adsorbents for CO 2 adsorption were summarized, and it is expected that this review will be helpful for the fundamental studies and industrial applications of activated carbons and amine-modified adsorbents for CO 2 capture.
Synthesis and characterisation of K2CO3-activated carbon produced from distilled spent grains for the adsorption of CO2

Abstract:Activated carbon was prepared from distilled spent grains (DSG) using K 2 CO 3 activation and chitosan modification. The effects of activator dosage, activation temperature, and the incorporation of chitosan as a nitrogen source on the adsorption performance were studied in this paper. The activated carbons were characterised by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and nitrogen and carbon dioxide gas adsorption. Under the optimal conditions, the BET-specific surface area, total pore volume, and microporous volume of the activated carbon were as high as 1142 m 2 /g, 0.62 cm 3 /g, and 0.40 cm 3 /g, respectively. Chitosan was used as the nitrogen source, and surface modification was carried out concurrently with the K 2 CO 3 activation process. The results revealed a carbon dioxide adsorption capacity of 5.2 mmol/g at 273.15 K and 1 bar without a nitrogen source, which increased to 5.76 mmol/g after chitosan modification. The isosteric heat of adsorption of CO 2 all exceed 20 kJ/mol, hinting at the coexistence of both physisorption and chemisorption. The adsorption behaviour of the DSG-based activated carbon can be well-described by the Freundlich model.

Abstract:This research applied a concurrent activation and surface modification (CAM) process to synthesize palm kernel shell‐derived activated carbon (PKSdAC) to obtain CO2 affinity surface functionalization. The CAM process is a simplified activated carbon activation process that is cost‐effective. The CAM process used in this study integrates sulphuric acid activation and barium chloride functionalization. The formation of barium sulphate is targeted to incorporate barium through a reduction process with carbon‐containing material at elevated temperatures into PKSdAC to obtain basic metal surfaces functional group for chemical adsorption. The optimal temperature for CAM‐PKSdAC CO2 adsorption performance was at 40–60 °C, established through temperature‐programmed desorption of CO2 (TPD‐CO2) analysis. The CAM‐PKSdAC adsorption performance was tested using a lab‐scale adsorption system. The bed CO2 content was determined using gas chromatography coupled with a thermal conductivity detector (GC‐TCD) by manual syringe injection. CAM‐PKSdAC exhibited a high CO2 adsorption capacity of 0.89 mmol g−1 from TPD‐CO2, and 1.91 mmol g−1 from GC‐TCD at 40 °C and 1 bar. It showed comparable CO2 adsorption capacity to conventional surface modified‐activated PKSdAC (1.96 mmol g−1) while higher than commercial and modified ACs (1.14–1.60 mmol g−1), but lower than potassium hydroxide modified ACs (1.81–2.10 mmol g−1) at 40 °C and 1 bar. Barium promoted chemisorption of CO2 as supplementary reaction, which increases adsorption capacity. The non‐linear Dubinin Radushkevich model strongly correlates with the experimental adsorption data for CAM‐PKSdAC adsorption, indicating the physisorption process via micropore filling on CAM‐PKSdAC. CAM‐PKSdAC showed moderate reusability with negligible variation in adsorption capacity after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Owing to the exponential increase in human populace and anthropogenic activities, there has been a significant release of CO 2 into the atmosphere, precipitating environmental quandaries such as the greenhouse effect. Consequently, the sequestration of CO 2 emerges as an imperative endeavor. While prior research has illuminated the potential of surface-modified biochar to augment its sequestration efficacy via avenues such as activation and nitrogen doping, scant attention has been devoted to diatomic modification strategies. In this investigation, a novel array of nitrogen and sulfur co-doped porous carbons were engineered, utilizing discarded bamboo shoot husks as a carbonaceous substrate, thiourea as a dual-source dopant for nitrogen and sulfur, and potassium carbonate as an activating agent, through an intricate triphasic synthesis procedure. The study meticulously evaluated their CO 2 sequestration capabilities, scrutinizing the influence of activator concentration and thermal activation conditions on the adsorption dynamics. The resultant N, S co-doped activated carbons manifested superlative CO 2 capture capacities. A salient specimen, designated BSNC-800–2, showcased an unparalleled CO 2 adsorptive uptake of 5.93 mmol/g at 0 °C and 3.83 mmol/g at 25 °C, attributable to its expansive specific surface area and substantive microporous volume. It was discerned that the interplay between the dopant concentrations and the proportion of narrow micropores was pivotal in modulating CO 2 adsorption efficacy. Furthermore, these samples exhibited a suite of remarkable CO 2 adsorption attributes, encompassing robust cyclic stability, elevated CO 2 /N 2 selectivity, and a moderate heat of adsorption. Isothermal adsorption model simulations at 25 °C across all samples demonstrated a high fidelity to empirical observations when aligned with the Freundlich isotherm. Thermodynamic assessments posited that the sequestration of CO 2 via the nitrogen-sulfur co-doped bamboo-derived porous carbons proceeded as a spontaneous and exothermic process, thereby corroborating the adsorbents' proficiency in CO 2 entrapment. This study is anticipated to inspire new methods for synthesizing nitrogen-sulfur co-doped carbon and provide fresh insights into CO 2 adsorption from flue gas using hetero-doped carbon.

Abstract:A high surface-area activated carbon was prepared from biomass of hazelnut shell (HS) using dual activators of KOH and Zn(NO3)2‧6H2O. The texture properties of Hazelnut Shell-derived Activated Carbons (HSACs) can be controlled through adjusting the mass ratio of Zn(NO3)2‧6H2O. According to CO2 adsorption on HSACs, a remarkable uptake of 3.8 mmol g-1 and the highest ideal adsorbed solution theory selectivity of 44.4 for CO2/N2 at 1.0 bar and 298 K were observed in HSAC-2, which possessed lowest specific surface area, highest micropore volume, highest carboxyl and carbonyl and lowest ether and hydroxyl groups. The synergistic effect of pore morphology, and surface functional groups plays a critical role in the adsorption of CO2. Excellent CO2 adsorption and separation effect can be achieved by utilizing the structural properties of HS itself, demonstrating HSACs are biomass adsorbent for CO2 with great development prospects.

Abstract:The pinecone, solid waste was successfully converted into activated carbon using chemical agents H3PO4. There were carefully studied properties including porous structures, surface functional groups, and morphology structures. The N2 adsorption studies showed that the nitrogen isotherm exhibits Type IV, and the presence of a hysteresis loop clearly shows the predominantly mesoporous characteristics. The values of correlation coefficient R2 = 0.9999 represented the satisfactory pseudo-second-order model. The results show that pinecone-activated carbon was effectively used as an adsorbent

Abstract:Green and low-cost biomass-based porous carbon adsorbents have a good prospect for the removal of some environmental pollutants. Here, sodium lignosulphonate, chitosan, and activator were firstly combined into wet gel microbeads through in situ self-assembly method, and then derived the novel porous carbon adsorption materials (LC-Cs) by freeze-drying and one-step activation carbonization. The results showed that LC-Cs had large specific surface areas (892.4∼1307.8 m 2 /g), high microporosity (87.4∼89.2%), and rich nitrogen content (3.01∼4.92%), and these structural parameters showed good linear dependence with the dosage ratio of lignin to chitosan. Next, LC-Cs carbon showed efficient CO 2 capture (173.9–215.2 mg/g) and high CO 2 /N 2 selectivity (up to IAST:145.9, Henry's law: 23.5), specially, the relationships between the CO 2 capture and the structural parameters were investigated in detail, and also performed DFT calculation. In addition, LC-C22 had the maximum adsorption capacity of p-nitrophenol (PNP) as 592.8 mg/g, and the adsorption isotherms and kinetic study indicated that they belonged to the multilayer adsorption on the heterogeneous surfaces, and the chemical adsorption played the dominated roles, and then further studied the adsorption mechanism by characterization techniques. This work provided a green and facile strategy for preparing structurally controllable N-doped porous carbon materials, as well as offered good potential adsorbents for PNP removal and CO 2 capture.
