Abstract:The development of electrochemical sensors with high sensitivity and accuracy is crucial for the detection of low-concentration heavy metal ions (HMIs) such as Pb(II) and Hg(II), which remains challenging. To address this issue, MgFe-layered double hydroxide (MgFe-LDH) is synthesized as an active layer on the conductive layer SnO2 loaded with nickel foam (NF) with the assistance of oxygen vacancies (OVs) to form an active-conductive layer stacked sensor. The results show that MgFe-LDH@SnO2/NF exhibits superior sensitivity (Pb(II): 417 μA/μM; Hg(II): 986 μA/μM), wider linear range (1.1–2.2 μM) and lower limits of detection (Pb(II): 1.21 nM; Hg(II): 3.7 nM). The high performance of our sensor is attributed to the improved ability to adsorb HMIs via OV reduced binding energy as well as the promoted rapid electron transport via SnO2 reduced charge transfer resistance, as evidenced by density functional theory and electrochemical measurements. Particularly, by combining the newly proposed tiny electrochemical detection network (ECDNet-tiny) and WeChat mini program, we have built a real-time detection platform for Pb(II) and Hg(II) pollution categories and concentrations, which shows high accuracy (0.98) and recovery rate (91.6 %-106.8 %) in the detection of actual water samples. The qualitative and quantitative calculations of electrochemistry is innovatively implemented by deep learning. Besides, smartphones could display detection results transmitted from cloud servers. Thus, this work provides a new sensor platform to improve the sensitivity, accuracy, and intelligence of detecting quintessential HMIs.
A portable magnetic electrochemical sensor for highly efficient Pb(II) detection based on bimetal composites from Fe-on-Co-MOF

Abstract:The practical, sensitive, and real-time detection of heavy metal ions is an essential and difficult problem. This study presents the design of a unique magnetic electrochemical detection system that can achieve real-time field detection. To enhance the electrochemical performance of the sensor, Fe2O3@C-800, Co/CoO@/C-600, and CoFe2O4@C-600 magnetic composites were synthesized using three MOFs precursors by the solvothermal method. And the morphology structure and electrochemical properties of as-prepared magnetic composites were researched by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), specific surface area and porosity analyzer (BET) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The results shown that these composites improve conductivity and stability while preserving the MOFs basic frame structure. Compared with the monometallic MOFs-derived composites, the synergistic effect of the bimetallic composite CoFe2O4@C-600 can significantly enhance the electrochemical performance of the sensor. The linear range for the detection of lead ions was 0.001-60 μM, and the detection limit was 0.0043 μM with a sensitivity of 22.22 μA μM·cm-2 by differential pulse voltammetry. The sensor has good selectivity, stability, reproducibility and can be used for actual sample testing.
A Highly Selective Magnetic Sensor for Cd2+ in Living Cells with (zn, Mn)-Doped Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Abstract:A magnetic sensor for Cd2+ has been developed based on (Zn, Mn)-doped iron oxide nanoparticles [(Zn, Mn)Fe3O4 NPs], which was modified by ethyl 1-(2-(3′,4′-dihydroxyphenyl)-2-oxoethyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylate (ETC). ETC provided the binding sites to Cd2+ to induce the transformation of (Zn, Mn)Fe3O4 NPs from a dispersed to an aggregated state with a corresponding increase in the transverse relaxation time (T2) of surrounding water protons. Owing to the special strong interaction between ETC and Cd2+, ETC coordinated (Zn, Mn)Fe3O4 [(ETC-(Zn, Mn)Fe3O4)] NPs exhibited a low limit of detection of Cd2+ of 3.5nM and a high selectivity over other metal ions. Furthermore, ETC-(Zn, Mn)Fe3O4 NPs can be used to detect Cd2+ in living cells by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.
Facile self-assembly synthesis of titanate/Fe3O4 nanocomposites for the efficient removal of Pb2+ from aqueous systems

Abstract:We report a novel process for the self-assembly of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) onto titanate nanotubes (TNTs), nanofibers (TNFs) and nanosheets (TNSs) to synthesize magnetic titanate nanocomposites. Both coulombic and van der Waals forces made important contributions to control the assembly process, in which the Fe3O4 NPs were uniformly dispersed onto the surfaces of the titanate nanostructures by a facile acid-induced method. The Fe3O4 NPs possessed unique magnetic properties for adsorbent separation, while the structures of the titanates determined the efficiency of Pb2+ removal. Interestingly, it was found that Pb2+ can be completely and quickly removed by the TNTs/Fe3O4 and TNSs/Fe3O4 nanocomposites. It is worth noting that the TNTs/Fe3O4 nanocomposite possessed the maximum adsorption capacity of 382.3 mg g−1, displaying a high efficiency for Pb2+ removal. The effects of pH value and contact time at different initial Pb2+ concentrations have been investigated. Based on the characterization results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy, a possible removal mechanism was proposed. This work provides a facile and general approach to synthesize magnetic functional nanocomposites for water treatment.

A Label-Free Electrochemical Biosensor Based on Magnetic Biocomposites with DNAzyme and Hybridization Chain Reaction Dual Signal Amplification for the Determination of Pb2+

Abstract:A highly sensitive and selective electrochemical biosensor for Pb2+ with a dual-amplification strategy is proposed. The first amplification step was realized by the cycle of Pb2+ and 8–17 DNAzyme (S2), and the hybridization chain reaction (HCR) triggered by S1 further amplified the electrochemical signal. Fe3O4@Au NPs, as a multifunctional magnetic carrier, is not only manifested in the construction of a magnetically controlled electrochemical response interface, but also has significant contribution in the purifying system, reducing interference, increasing the specific surface area, and the DNA loading. The magnetic nanocomposites were characterized by TEM as spheres with particle size of around 39 nm. When there was no Pb2+, long double-strand DNA (dsDNA) is formed on the surface of Fe3O4@Au NPs by the S1-triggered HCR; in the presence of Pb2+, S2 is activated and S1 on the surface of magnetic biocomposites (Fe3O4@Au NPs-S1) is continuously cleaved with the cycle of Pb2+ and S2, leading to a significant decrease of methylene blue (MB) absorbed on dsDNA. Such reverse dual-signal amplification strategy effectively increased the current difference and improved the sensitivity of the proposed sensor. The electrochemical signal of MB was obtained by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) with preconcentration, showing a linear response toward Pb2+ ranging from 50 pM to 1 μM with a detection limit of 15 pM. The proposed method has feasible applications in detecting other heavy metal ions based on other metal-dependent DNAzyme.

Abstract:Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell structured nanoparticles are promising candidates for adsorption of heavy metal ions from waste water due to their high adsorption capacities and feasible recycling process. However, their practical applications have been hindered by the trade-off between the magnetic separation efficiency and durability. In this study, we demonstrate the preparation of amino-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 absorbents with both high magnetic separation efficiencies and durability in strong acidic environment. Our key strategy was to use a thin but highly protective silica layer by manipulating the sol-gel chemistry. With the protection of a thin but poorly permeable silica shell, the durability of the Fe3O4 in strong acid solution was significantly enhanced while its magnetic separation efficiency was maintained. We also demonstrated the adsorption of Cu2+ from aqueous solution corresponded well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption capacity can be further improved by coating an additional layer of mesoporous SiO2 outside Fe3O4@SiO2. The design of highly durable magnetic absorbents without sacrificing the magnetic separation efficiency greatly facilitates the practical applications of magnetic nanoparticles in adsorption of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Identifying ultra-trace amounts of divalent lead ions (Pb 2+ ) with high response and selectivity, continues to be a pressing issue in identifying environmental pollutants and preventing health complications. This paper details how the in-situ electrodeposited Zn/Cu-BTC-NH 2 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) boosts Pb 2+ concentration for amino adsorption and facilitates ion transfer between Cu element and Pb 2+ . The modified coating of the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) exhibits a unique nano-reticulated structure loaded with octahedron particles, the nano-reticulated structure ensures the structural strength of the modified electrode layer, while the loaded octahedral particles enhancing electrocatalytic activity. The ultra-trace detection of Pb 2+ at concentrations below μg·L -1 is accomplished by using the square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) method, the fabricated Zn/Cu-BTC-NH 2 modified electrode signifies a detection threshold of 0.021 μg·L -1 and a clearly ascending linear interval prior to the rise in Pb 2+ concentration to 120 μg·L -1 . The reported electrochemical method for the precise identification of Pb 2+ in water-based solutions offers a practical approach for modifying MOFs materials and detecting heavy metal ions.

Construction of a Fluorescence/Phase-Change Dual-Mode Sensor Based on Carbon Dots/Poly(acrylic acid) for Highly Selective and Sensitive Detection of Ferric Ions

Abstract:Fe3+ is one of the crucial metal ions in biological systems, and its excess or deficiency in the body can trigger various diseases, posing a serious threat to human health. Moreover, improper handling or disposal of Fe3+ can lead to water pollution, thereby harming the environment. Therefore, the development of highly selective and sensitive Fe3+ detection probes is particularly urgent. In this paper, a dual-mode sensor based on sol-gel and fluorescence signal responses was developed for the visual detection of Fe3+. The visual sensing method based on the simultaneous response of Fe3+-triggered dual signals can minimize the interference from false-positive signals and enhance detection accuracy. The dual-mode sensor, denoted as PAA@CDs, was constructed by incorporating high-brightness (high fluorescence emission intensity) green-yellow carbon dots (CDs) into poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), which possesses a large number of carboxyl functional groups. Based on the interaction of Fe3+ with the surface functional groups of CDs, nonfluorescent complexes are formed, leading to nonradiative electron transfer, which induces fluorescence quenching and produces a fluorescence signal visible to the naked eye. Additionally, the interaction of Fe3+ with the carboxyl groups of PAA triggers the cross-linking of PAA, causing a sol-gel phase change signal. Consequently, the PAA@CDs exhibit a dual-response signal in Fe3+ detection. Based on the fluorescence method, the linear detection range of PAA@CDs for Fe3+ is 0.05-2.60 mM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 5.14 μM. Meanwhile, using the sol-gel method, the linear detection range is 0.02-2.20 mM, and the LOD is 42.5 μM. Furthermore, the PAA@CDs probes can be successfully applied to the detection of Fe3+ in real water samples, demonstrating their potential value in the analysis of real samples containing multiple ions.

Abstract:This work investigated the effect of different volumes of ammonia on the morphology of magnetic core‐shell mesoporous nano‐structure. The introduction of mesoporous carbon layer increased the electrical conductivity of the active material and maintained the adsorption properties of magnetic Fe3O4. The surface‐element chemical states of Fe3O4@MPC are changed by adding different volumes of ammonia. In recent years, efficient and porous carbon‐layer‐modified magnetic metal oxides demonstrate potentials for the significant improvement of catalytic and adsorption performance. In this study, a novel magnetic coreshell Fe3O4@mesoporous carbon (Fe3O4@MPC) nanochain electrochemical sensor is constructed by using resorcinol‐formaldehyde resin and magnetic Fe3O4 nanospheres as the carbon shell precursor and core, respectively, with a simple emulsion self‐assembly strategy. Microstructural characterizations revealed that the carbon shell exhibited a mesopore distribution of ≈40 nm and the diameter of Fe3O4 nanospheres embedded into carbon is ≈280 nm. The introduction of mesoporous carbon layer increased the electrical conductivity of the active material and maintained the adsorption properties of magnetic Fe3O4. The synergistic effect of the mesoporous carbon layer and Fe3O4 nanochain is beneficial to electrochemically detect heavy metal ions (HMIs). Under optimal conditions, the typical Fe3O4@MPC‐2/GCE exhibited excellent electrochemical sensing for detecting Hg(II) and Pb(II), with limits of detection (LOD) of 7.8 nm and 12.1 nm (S/N = 3), respectively. These good results are attributed to the Fe3O4@MPC nanochain structure and a relatively high specific surface area. This study provides a novel method to prepare magnetic mesoporous carbon nanochain composites for constructing sensitive electrochemical sensors to monitor water quality.

Abstract:Separating and recovering lead from heavy metal contaminated wastewater is crucial for the environment remediation and reutilization of lead resources. Herein, a novel adsorbent, the phosphorylated chitosan-coated magnetic silica nanoparticles (Fe3O4@SiO2@CS-P), was successfully fabricated and applied to highly selective adsorption of lead. Competitive experiments were conducted in a multi-ion solution (7 metal ions coexist) at pH 6.0, Fe3O4@SiO2@CS-P exhibited an excellent selectively for capturing lead with the distribution coefficient (0.75 L g-1) more ten times than other metal, while Fe3O4@SiO2@CS demonstrated a highly selective adsorption of silver. These implied that phosphorylation of adsorbent not only improves the sorption performance of lead, but also changes the selective adsorption of metal types. Acidity experiments can draw conclusions that Fe3O4@SiO2@CS-P exhibited better acid resistance (with barely any iron leaching) than silica-uncoated adsorbent (Fe3O4@CS-P) at pH 1.0. Furthermore, the FTIR and XPS spectra after adsorption suggested that the high adsorption performance and selective capture lead were predominantly controlled by the coordination of the phosphate groups on the surface of the adsorbent. This work shows a broad prospect of developing a series of novel, acid-resistant, good reusable and rapidly separable magnetic materials that can be used to efficiently and selectively capture lead from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:We propose here a fabrication of an electrochemical sensor to detect heavy metal ions based on a glass carbon electrode (GCE) modified with a composite system consisting of graphene, chitosan, and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (GrCF) by using square wave voltammetry (SWV) measurements. The GrCF composite was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy. GrCF consists of thin and smooth sheets stacked in overlapping layers to form porous structures. In the GrCF composite, graphene acts as a substrate with a high electrochemical activity and a good electrical conductivity, Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles are uniformly distributed on the graphene thanks to chitosan as a binder, the functional groups of chitosan (− OH, − NH 2 ) have the ability to form complexes with heavy metal ions, and the excellent adsorption capacity of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles has enhanced the electrochemical reactions. The GrCF/GCE can detect Pb 2+ ions with a linear range from 4 to 16 μM, a low detection limit of 3.57 μM, and a sensitivity of 8.623 μA μM −1 . Furthermore, the repeatability of the measurements are reliable with a standard deviation (SD) of 0.15 μA and a relative standard deviation (RSD%) of 4.16%. Additionally, Pb 2+ was detected in the real sample at potentials of − 0.50 V/ − 0.52 V with calculated recovery values for two measurements of 89.02% and 89.43%. The electrode modification method based on the GrCF composite promises outstanding advantages in the field of electrochemical sensors for detection of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:The present-day human race is facing a series of environmental problems due to sewage discharge, excessive use of chemicals, mineral exploitation and so on, which are closely related to the rapid development of industries. The direct consequence is that the pollution of heavy metal ions is becoming more and more serious. It is very important to develop sensitive and efficient methods for detecting heavy metal ions. In this study, the nanocomposite of sulfur-doped graphitic carbon nitride (SCN) and Bi nanospheres (BiNSs) was prepared by thermal polycondensation reaction to introduce the sulfur into carbon nitride, followed by solvothermal method to realize the decoration of BiNSs. The SCN/BiNSs nanocomposite presents a highly selective and sensitive electrochemical detection capacity for Pb 2+ , derived from S-Pb strong bonding interaction and Bi-Pb binary alloy formation. The low detection limit of 0.07 μM could be achieved when the current response of Pb 2+ was measured in the linear range of 0.1 μM − 4.5 μM by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry. The detection of Pb 2+ in actual water specimens led to a recovery rate varied from 88 to 123 %. Further, in the presence of 20-fold interfering ions such as Zn 2+ , Fe 3+ , Cd 2+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 2+ and Ni 2+ , the SCN/BiNSs-modified electrode still possesses excellent immunity and selectivity. Meanwhile, the remarkable stability, repeatability and reproducibility of the above sensing electrode have also been demonstrated. Our primary results show that the SCN/BiNSs nanocomposite holds great potential for practical application for Pb 2+ detection.

Abstract:Inorganic–organic hybrid WOx–ethylenediamine (WOx–EDA) nanowires with high surface-to-volume ratio and abundant amino groups were synthesized for selective and sensitive electrochemical determination of Pb2+. The WOx–EDA nanowires possessed a uniform lamellar mesostructure and could disperse evenly in Nafion solution for preparation of WOx–EDA modified electrode with good reproducibility. The modified electrode showed selective response toward Pb2+ due to the chelating between amino groups and Pb2+. The electrochemical characterization and detection of bound Pb2+ were performed by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry. Under optimized conditions, the WOx–EDA-based sensor could detect Pb2+ directly from 0.01 to 10μM with a detection of limit down to 3.2nM. The proposed sensor with WOx–EDA hybrid nanowires exhibited good selectivity and sensitivity, and acceptable stability and reproducibility, showing promising practical application in Pb2+ determination.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination has become an urgent global concern, posing a significant threat to our environment and health. Hence, it is critical to exploit functional materials for heavy metal ions sensing and elimination. However, the development of multifunctional materials that can simultaneously accomplish the selective detection and removal of the metal ions remains a significant challenge. In this work, a two-dimensional (2D) layered metal–organic framework (LMOF) functionalized with diverse binding sites has been utilized to concurrently detect and remove Fe3+ ions. The LMOF [Zn(hsb-2) (5-aipa)](HSB-W15) was rationally designed and constructed from the mixed ligands of hsb-2 (1,2-bis(4′-pyridylmethylamino)-ethane) and 5-aipa (5-aminoisophthate) under mild condition. In addition, the corresponding ultrathin nanosheets HSB-W15-NS were also obtained by adapting the instant in situ exfoliation (IISEM) method. Owing to the ultrathin nanosheet morphology and an abundance of active sites on the surface, HSB-W15-NS nanosheets can function as an effective fluorescent sensor to detect Fe3+ and Cr3+ ions. Exceptionally, HSB-W15-NS can also be used to selectively capture Fe3+ ions from water, with up to 93 % removal efficiency, and the adsorption equilibrium attained in 5 min. The sensing and adsorption processes were investigated based on kinetic model analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectrum analysis, density functional theory calculations, and control experiments. This work inspired the development of ultrathin 2D MOF nanosheets for applications in environmental protection.

Abstract:Silica-coated magnetite (Fe3O4@SiO2) nanoparticles functionalized with amino, imino and sulfonic groups (Fe3O4@SiO2–mPD/SP) were successfully synthesized via a facile chemical oxidative polymerization of m-phenylenediamine (mPD) and m-sulfophenylenediamine-4-sulfonic acid (SP) monomers, and utilized for selective removal of Pb(ii) and Cr(vi) from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:The functionalization of materials for ultrasensitive detection of heavy metal ions (HMIs) in the environment is crucial. Herewith, we have functionalized inexpensive and environmentally friendly Fe3O4 nanoparticles with D-valine (Fe3O4–D–Val) by a simple co-precipitation synthetic approach characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, and FTIR spectroscopy. The Fe3O4–D–Val sensor was used for the ultrasensitive detection of Cd+2, Pb+2, and Cu+2 in water samples. This sensor shows a very low detection limit of 11.29, 4.59, and 20.07 nM for Cd+2, Pb+2, and Cu+2, respectively. The detection limits are much lower than the values suggested by the world health Organization. The real water samples were also analyzed using the developed sensor.

Abstract:N-doped carbon materials are known for their high conductivity, rich N content, and high adsorption activity. When combined with Fe2O3 to form nanocomposites, they can improve the conductivity of Fe2O3 and cause significant changes in the electrochemical sensing interface with the influence of their unique electronic structure. In this work, N-doped carbon nanocomposites (Fe2O3@NCNPs-x) modified with Fe2O3 nanoparticles (Fe2O3 NPs) were synthesized by a simple emulsion polymerization method and carbonized under Ar at a high temperature. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that compared with undoped Fe2O3 NPs, the π bond of Fe2O3@NCNPs-1.5 was negatively charged due to the lone pair of electrons near the N atom, acting as an electron donor that enhanced the interaction with HMIs and electron transport, therefore generating more active sites on the surface of Fe2O3@NCNPs-1.5. The obtained Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio was about two times higher than that of undoped Fe2O3 NPs (Fe2O3@NCNPs-1.5: Fe2+/Fe3+ = 1.24; Fe2O3 NPs: Fe2+/Fe3+ = 0.61). The surface oxygen vacancy (OV) concentration reached the maximum level (Fe2O3@NCNPs-1.5: OVs/O1s = 41.7%; Fe2O3 NPs: OVs/O1s = 22%). Fe2O3@NCNPs-1.5/GCE also showed enhanced electrochemical performance for detecting Pb2+ and Cd2+, with a limit of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) of 4.92 and 18.79 nM, respectively. Electrochemical adsorption tests suggested that Fe2O3@NCNPs-1.5/GCE had the strongest adsorption capacity for Pb2+ and Cd2+ in comparison with other modified electrodes, suggesting that different N contents led to different absorbability for heavy metal ions (HMIs). Therefore, when the metal oxide nanoparticles are loaded on compatible carriers, the jointly constructed nanocomposites can be used as the active materials for efficiently detecting HMIs, providing a new concept for designing highly active electrochemical sensors.

Abstract:Development of an efficient monitoring technology for rapid detection of toxic Pb(Ⅱ) ion in water environments is extremely important. Here, a novel and highly sensitive sensor was prepared using one-step calcination technique, based on Bi2O3 nanoparticles and carbonized metal–organic framework (MOF) nanocomposite. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, contact angle and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization methods were used to analyze the morphology and structure of the prepared materials. Based on the electrical double-layer capacitance theory and Raman spectroscopy, changes to the active sites of different modified materials were investigated. Besides, differential charge densities and adsorption energies of the different modified materials in Zr-O clusters were calculated using density functional theory (DFT). A Bi2O3 and carbonized UIO-66-NH2 (Bi2O3/C-UIO-66-NH2) -modified glassy carbon electrode was used to detect Pb(Ⅱ) by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry. Under optimal experimental parameters, the developed electrochemical sensor has a wide linear range (2–130 μg/L) and a low detection limit (0.05 μg/L). Meanwhile, the sensor has excellent stability, repeatability, and anti-interference properties and has been successfully applied to detect Pb(Ⅱ) in actual water samples. The results of this paper show that our developed sensor an efficient and rapid sensor technology for monitoring lead in water environment.

Fe–Mn Oxides Based Multifunctional Adsorptive/Electrosensing Nanoplatforms: Dynamic Site Rearrangement for Metal Ion Selectivity

Abstract:Achieving structural requirements for the exclusive selectivity of adsorbent to a specific metal remains challenging, as certain metal ions show similar adsorptive behaviors and preference toward a given site. We reported the morphology and oxidation state-dependent selectivity manipulating of layered oxides by controlling the dynamic evolution of different adsorptive sites. The computational investigation predicted the site-specific partitioning trends of metal ions at two sites of manganese oxide (MnO2) layers: the lateral edge sites (LESs) and octahedral vacancy sites (OVSs). In contrast to the predominant occupation of the OVSs for other metal ions, the binding of lead (Pb) ions was energetically favored at both the sites. We assembled ultrathin MnO2 nanosheets on the magnetic iron oxides to first enhance the accessibility of the LESs. A sequential ligand-promoted partial reduction of the atomic MnO2 layers induced the edge-to-interlayer migration of Mn atoms to block the nonspecific OVSs and activate the LESs, enabling a superior selectivity to Pb. In addition, the iron oxides helped construct a multifunctional adsorptive/electrosensing platform for Pb regarding their facile magnetic separation and electrochemical activity.
