Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is one of the most valuable clean energy sources with a rapidly growing requirement in industry and daily life. The direct synthesis of H2O2 from hydrogen and oxygen is considered to be an economical and environmentally friendly manufacturing route to replace the traditional anthraquinone method, although it remains a formidable challenge owing to low H2O2 selectivity and production. Here, we report a catalyst consisting of Pd(111) nanocrystals on TiO2 modified with single Pt atoms (Pt1Pd(111)/TiO2), which displays outstanding reactivity, producing 1921.3 μmol of H2O2, a H2 conversion of 62.2% and H2O2 selectivity of 80.3% over 30 min. Kinetic and isotope experiments confirm that the extraordinary catalytic properties are due to stronger H2 activation (the rate-determining step). DFT calculations confirm that Pt1Pd(111) exhibits lower energy barriers for H2 dissociation and two-step O2 hydrogenation, but higher energy barriers for side reactions than Pt1Pd(100), demonstrating clear facet dependence and resulting in greater selectivity and amount of H2O2 produced.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the catalytic properties of mono- and bimetallic palladium (Pd) and platinum (Pt) nanoparticles deposited via supercritical fluid reactive deposition (SFRD) on titanium dioxide (TiO2) powder. Transmission electron microscopy analyses verified that SFRD experiments performed at 353 K and 15.6 MPa enabled the deposition of uniform mono- and bimetallic nanoparticles smaller than 3 nm on TiO2. Electron-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy demonstrated the formation of alloy-type structures for the bimetallic PdPt nanoparticles. H2O2 is an excellent oxidizing reagent for the production of fine and bulk chemicals. However, until today, the design and preparation of catalysts with high H2O2 selectivity and productivity remain a great challenge. The focus of this study was on answering the questions of (a) whether the catalysts produced are suitable for the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the liquid phase and (b) how the metal type affects the catalytic properties. It was found that the metal type (Pd or Pt) influenced the catalytic performance strongly; the mean productivity of the mono- and bimetallic catalysts decreased in the following order: Pd > PdPt > Pt. Furthermore, all catalysts prepared by SFRD showed a significantly higher mean productivity compared to the catalyst prepared by incipient wetness impregnation.

The Origin of Palladium Particle Size Effects in the Direct Synthesis of H2o2: is Smaller Better?

Abstract:A series of size-controlled Pd/hydroxyapatite (HAp) catalysts ranging from single sites (Pd clusters) to nanoparticles (dpd: similar to 30 nm) was prepared and examined for the H2O2 synthesis directly from H-2 and O-2. A Pd/HAp (dpd: similar to 1.4 nm) showed a high selectivity of 94% toward H2O2 under mild conditions (283 K and atmospheric pressure). The crystal phase, morphology, surface electronic states and coordination number of Pd particles from atomic level to nano scale were characterized in detail using multiple techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure. Density functional theory calculations indicated that Pd clusters of subnano size have the most effective active sites for the selective activation of oxygen hydrogenation, thus resulting in high catalytic efficiency for H2O2 synthesis. This work elucidates why those smaller Pd particles in a proper size range show the best catalytic performance for H2O2 synthesis. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), as a clean and green oxidant, is widely used in many fields. The direct synthesis of H2O2 (DSHP) from H2 and O2 has attracted most research interest because it relates to a facile, environmentally friendly, and economic process. Yolk–shell Pd-M@HCS (hollow carbon sphere) (M = Co, Ni, Cu) nanocatalysts, in which the bimetal nanoparticle is the core and porous carbon works as the shell layer, are reported in this work. It was found that catalytic activities were enhanced because of the introduced M metals. Additionally, the different mass ratios of Pd to Co (mPd/mCo) were further investigated to improve the catalytic performance for the DSHP. When mPd/mCo was 4.4, the prepared Pd-Co@HCS-(4.4) catalyst, with an average Pd nanoparticle size of 7.30 nm, provided the highest H2O2 selectivity of 87% and H2O2 productivity of 1996 mmolgPd−1·h−1, which were increased by 24% and 253%, respectively, compared to Pd@HCS.

Abstract:The development of high-activity catalysts with good selectivity for the direct synthesis of H2O2 from H2 and O2 remains challenging. TiO2–C used as a support material is able to facilitate strong metal–support interactions. We designed catalysts for the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide that utilized the synergistic effects of hybrid TiO2–C supports and ordered alloyed PdNi nanoparticles in a neutral reaction solution. Through thermal hydrogen treatment, the ordered structure of the alloyed PdNi nanocatalysts was transformed. 1H NMR was used to measure the amount of water formed as an estimate of selectivity. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies showed an excellent dispersion of the bimetallic PdNi nanocatalyst on the hybrid support. X-ray absorption spectroscopy gave clear evidence of metal–support interactions with electron transfer from the ordered alloyed PdNi nanocatalysts to the defect TiO2–C support, resulting in a noteworthy performance with high H2O2 productivity and selectivity under ambient conditions. Abstract:The direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (DSHP) from hydrogen and oxygen is a green synthesis method with a high atomic economy. However, H2O2 selectivity and productivity remain a key challenge, the OO bonds are easily broken with supported Pd catalysts to produce water. Herein, we report the synthesis of bimetallic catalyst PdSn@Pd@HCS by adapting reversed-phase micellar and galvanic replacement reaction. The novel bimetallic yolk-shell structure catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic performance, the selectivity and productivity of H2O2 reaching 98% and 4899 mmol/gPd· h − 1, respectively. Theoretical calculations reveal that the presence of Sn inside the bimetallic alloy can enhance the ligand effect and optimize the electronic structure of the surface Pd atoms, weakening the adsorption ability of O2 molecules and inhibiting the dissociation of OO bonded species, resulting in the enhancement of H2O2 selectivity and productivity. This work provides the groundwork for bimetallic yolk-shell structure catalysts to achieve the efficient synthesis of H2O2.

Abstract:Highly selective hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) synthesis directly from H-2 and O-2 is a strongly desired reaction for green processes. Herein a highly efficient palladium-tellurium (Pd-Te/TiO2) catalyst with a selectivity of nearly 100% toward H2O2 under mild conditions (283K, 0.1MPa, and a semi-batch continuous flow reactor) is reported. The size of Pd particles was remarkably reduced from 2.1nm to 1.4nm with the addition of Te. The Te-modified Pd surface could significantly weaken the dissociative activation of O-2, leading to the non-dissociative hydrogenation of O-2. Density functional theory calculations illuminated the critical role of Te in the selective hydrogenation of O-2, in that the active sites composed of Pd and Te could significantly restrain side reactions. This work has made significant progress on the development of high-selectivity catalysts for the direct synthesis of H2O2 at ambient pressure.

Abstract:Direct synthesis of H2O2 from H2 and O2 still faces the dilemma of low selectivity and productivity due to the O-O bond dissociation. To expedite the resolution of this issue, we introduce a core-shell structured catalyst Co@Pd/ TiO2 with a compressed-strain Pd shell. The Co@Pd/TiO2 catalyst demonstrates a superior H2O2 productivity of 6.95 x 103 mmol center dot gPd-1 center dot h- 1 and H2O2 selectivity of 98.1 %, with enhancements of over 192 % and 139 %, respectively, when compared to Pd/TiO2. The construction of the compressed-strain Pd shell on the Co@Pd/TiO2 catalyst induces a winder width (wd) and a lower center (epsilon d) of the Pd d-band, allowing the Co@Pd/TiO2 catalyst to achieve the following benefits for improving H2O2 selectivity and productivity: (1) Reducing the degree of electron back-donation to O2* (* denotes adsorbed state, the same below), thus inhibiting the cleavage of the O-O bond in O2*; (2) Showing a weaker Pd-O bond strength, which stabilizes the OOH* species and suppresses the breakage of the O-O bond therein; (3) Weakening the interaction between the catalyst and chemical substances, thereby restraining H2O2 degradation.

Pd/TiO Nanocatalyst with Strong Metal–Support Interaction for Highly Efficient Durable Heterogeneous Hydrogenation

Abstract:Developing heterogeneous catalysts that promote activation of hydrogen and adsorption of reactants on the surface is crucial to improve the activity of hydrogenation reactions. Herein, we present the use of highly reduced TiO support for loading noble metal nanoparticles, which provides a synergistic effect on boosting catalytic activity. The lowtemperature polymorph of titanium monoxide is used as support and promoter, which contains vacancies in both the Ti and 0 sublattices with ordered distribution. The lattice vacancies increase the donor density and enhance the adsorption of substrate and hydrogen and subsequently lower the activation energy required for the hydrogen dissociation. Moreover, the existence of strong metal support interactions in Pd/TiO ascertained from HRTEM and XPS analysis is responsible for both the strong binding of Pd nanoparticles and improved electronic conductivity, resulting in enhanced catalytic performance. The as synthesized Pd/TiO catalyst has been evaluated for the hydrogenation of styrene and 4-nitrophenol (4NP) and shows excellent performance. The rate constant for 4 NP reduction over Pd/TiO is 0.05 s(-1), which is higher than the previously reported data; moreover, the catalyst shows good stability up to 10 successive cycles. Hydrogenation of styrene is conducted at ambient conditions using Pd/TiO as catalyst, which exhibits remarkably high turnover frequency (TOP) of 4838 h(-1). The catalyst can be recovered and recycled several times without a marked loss of activity. The results show that our Pd/TiO catalyst is one of the highest activity among reported heterogeneous hydrogenation catalysts. The obtained Pd/TiO catalyst may hold great potential in catalysis for organic transformations and other reactions.
Exploring the Key Role of Electronic Effects in Pd Catalysts Supported on Ni-modified N-doped Porous Carbon for Direct Synthesis of H2O2 under Atmospheric Pressure

Abstract:Developing high-performance catalysts for direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2; DSHP) remains challenging. The paper proposes a strategy to optimize Pd catalysts by enriching Ni-modified N-doped porous carbon. The theoretical studies indicate that Ni modulates the electronic structure of Pd through charge transfer and strain effects, effectively reducing the adsorption energy of reaction intermediates. Furthermore, the Crystal Orbital Hamilton Population (COHP) analysis demonstrated that the energy-integrated COHP (ICOHP) of the O-O bonds in O2* (* denotes the adsorbed state), OOH*, and HOOH* were positively correlated with dissociation activation energies and negatively correlated with hydrogenation activation energies. The modulation of the electronic structure of Pd by Ni reduces the hydrogenation activation energies of O2* and OOH* and increases the dissociation activation energies of O2*, OOH*, and HOOH*, thereby enhancing the selectivity and productivity of H2O2. The experimental results aligned with the theoretical predictions, showcasing that the optimized Pd-Ni7.5/NPCs catalyst exhibited remarkable H2O2 selectivity and productivity of 70.5 % and 230.31 mol kgcat -1 & sdot;h-1, respectively, surpassing the performance of Pd/NPCs (47.1 % and 52.3 mol kgcat offers profound insights into the crucial role of electron effects in DSHP using nickel-modified palladium catalysts, providing strong evidence into the design and optimization of Pd catalysts.

Abstract:Pd/titanium dioxide nanotubes (Pd/TiO2-NTs) catalysts were prepared by a simple reduction method using TiO2-NTs as support. The structure and morphology of the resulting Pd/TiO2-NTs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that Pd nanoparticles with a size range from 6 to 13nm were well-dispersed on the surface of TiO2-NTs. The electrocatalytic properties of Pd/TiO2-NTs catalysts for hydrazine oxidation were also investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Compared to that of pure Pd particles and Pd/TiO2 particles, Pd/TiO2-NTs catalyst showed much higher electrochemical activity. This may be attributed to the uniform dispersion of Pd nanoparticles on TiO2-NTs, smaller particle size and unique properties of TiO2-NTs support. In addition, the mechanism of hydrazine electrochemical oxidation catalyzed by Pd/TiO2-NTs are also investigated. The oxidation of hydrazine was an irreversible process, which might be controlled by diffusion process of hydrazine.
Enhanced Bifunctional Electrocatalytic Performance of NiFe-layered Double Hydroxide Activated by Ultrasonic-Assisted Loading of Pd Nanoclusters

Abstract:In this study, metallic Pd nanocrystals loaded on NiFe-layered double hydroxide (Pd/NiFeLDH-u) electrocatalyst for water splitting is synthesized via a novel ultrasonic-assisted ion exchange and in situ reduction method. The ultrasonic-assisted loaded Pd clusters (with an average size 2.84 nm) are in high crystallinity. The optimized Pd/NiFe-LDH-u displays remarkable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity with a low overpotential of 267 mV at 20 mA cm-2. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) mass activity of Pd/NiFeLDH-u is up to 6.37 A mg-1 at an overpotential of 300 mV, which is nearly 10 times higher than that of bare Pd and outperforming most reported Pd-based catalysts. Both the experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations prove that the ultrasonic-assisted loading effectively strengthens the interaction between Pd and NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH), resulting in improved dispersion uniformity, cata-lytic stability, electrical conductivity and bifunctional catalytic activities.(c) 2023 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Abstract:H2O2 synthesis directly from H-2 and O-2 and side reactions in this system over a variety of Pd-Au/TiO2 catalysts have been studied systemically. The effects of Pd/Au ratio on H2O2 synthesis and subsequent H2O2 hydrogenation were investigated. The catalysts were characterized using multiple techniques including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy of CO adsorption (CO-DRIFTS), X-rays photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and temperature-programmed desorption of H-2/O-2 (H-2-/O-2-TPD). By detailed analysis of these spectroscopies and the kinetics of this reaction, new insights into various active sites of Pd upon alloying with Au were elaborated. Pd monomer surrounded by Au atoms could be the primary active site for H2O2 formation. In addition, Pd ensembles were assumed to be more active for H2O2 hydrogenation than monomeric Pd sites; the over-oxidation of H-2 to H2O likely occurred at the interface between Au and TiO2. Abstract:Direct H2O2 synthesis (DHS) from H2 and O2 is a promising process in industry; however, challenges related to poor H2O2 selectivity and low H2O2 yield remain. We report here that Pd x Pb nanorings (NRs) can serve as high-efficiency catalysts for DHS. We demonstrate that the preferential location of Pb species at the edge and corner can significantly decrease the amount of low-coordinated Pd atoms in Pd x Pb NRs, leading to an enhanced H2O2 yield and selectivity but a reduced degradation rate. Consequently, the optimized catalyst gives a H2O2 yield of 170.1 mol kgcat –1 h–1, being one of the best catalysts reported for DHS to the best of our knowledge. Theoretical calculations reveal that Pd x Pb NRs are favorable for *OOH formation, a key intermediate for DHS, while Pd NRs tend to dissociate O2 to form H2O in the presence of H2. On the other hand, the cleavage of O–O in H2O2 is strongly suppressed on Pd x Pb NRs, leading to a low H2O2 degradation rate. This work highlights the significance of catalyst surface modifications, especially the control of Pd coordination environment on DHS performance, which may provide deep insight for catalyst design in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Highly selective hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) synthesis directly from H-2 and O-2 is a strongly desired reaction for green processes. Herein a highly efficient palladium-tellurium (Pd-Te/TiO2) catalyst with a selectivity of nearly 100% toward H2O2 under mild conditions (283K, 0.1MPa, and a semi-batch continuous flow reactor) is reported. The size of Pd particles was remarkably reduced from 2.1nm to 1.4nm with the addition of Te. The Te-modified Pd surface could significantly weaken the dissociative activation of O-2, leading to the non-dissociative hydrogenation of O-2. Density functional theory calculations illuminated the critical role of Te in the selective hydrogenation of O-2, in that the active sites composed of Pd and Te could significantly restrain side reactions. This work has made significant progress on the development of high-selectivity catalysts for the direct synthesis of H2O2 at ambient pressure.

Abstract:In this study we show that using AuPd nanoparticles supported on a commercial titanium silicate (TS‐1) prepared using a wet co‐impregnation method it is possible to produce hydrogen peroxide from molecular H2 and O2 via the direct synthesis reaction. The effect of Au: Pd ratio and calcination temperature is evaluated as well as the role of Pt addition to the AuPd supported catalysts. The effect of Pt addition to AuPt nanoparticles is observed to result in a significant improvement in catalytic activity and selectivity to hydrogen peroxide with detailed characterisation indicating this is a result of selectively tuning the ratio of Pd oxidation states.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped porous carbon is potential support for directly synthesizing H2O2 from H-2 and O-2. Here, density functional theory (DFT) was used to study the effect of N-doped porous carbon on H2O2 directly synthesized. The theoretical calculation results showed that N-doped improved H2O2 productivity and H2 conversion by increasing the dispersion of Pd nanoparticles and the Pd-0 /Pd2+ ratio. However, N-doped decreased H2O2 selectivity by reducing oxygen's dissociation energies. The experimental results showed that adjusting the pore structure of N-doped porous carbon could improve the adverse effects of N-doping for H2O2 selectivity. The H2O2 productivity and selectivity of Pd/C catalyst with a macropore-mesoporous-microporous hierarchical porous structure were up to 328.4 molH(2)O(2)center dot kg(cat)(-1) center dot h(-1) and 71.9 %, respectively, at ambient pressure. The macropore structure enhances the transfer and diffusion performance of the catalyst and effectively inhibits the effect of N-doping on OAO bond dissociation, which improves H2O2 productivity and selectivity. This research provides a possible solution for designing a high-performance Pd/C catalyst to directly synthesize H2O2 from H-2 and O-2 at ambient pressure. (c) 2022 The Authors.
