Abstract:Self-assembled manganese cobalt oxide (Mn0.5Co2.5O4) nanofibers sandwiched in graphene sheets (Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G) are successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal treatment and annealing process. Owning to the unique sandwich-like structures, rich active sites, and boosted electrical conductivity, Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G composite demonstrates superior electrochemical performance for potential supercapacitors. In a three-electrode system, it exhibits excellent cycling stability with a specific capacitance retention of 93.8% after 10 000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g(-1,) and achieves specific capacitances of 617 and 434 F g(-1) at the ultrahigh current densities of 30 and 40 A g(-1), respectively. For an asymmetric supercapacitor of Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G/AC, high energy densities of 36.8 and 13.6 W h kg(-1) are also achieved at power densities of 147.3 and 3755.8 W kg(-1), respectively. It is believed that the synthesized Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G composite can be a promising electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors, and the present synthetic strategy can be further extended for designing many other functional composites with desirable nanostructures and performance.

Abstract:Supercapacitors have been extensively studied due to their advantages of fast-charging and discharging, high-power density, long-cycling life, low cost, etc. Exploring novel nanomaterial schemes for high-performance electrode materials is of great significance. Herein, a strategy to combine vertical graphene (VG) with MoO3 nanosheets to form a composite VG/MoO3 nanostructure is proposed. VGs as transition layers supply rich active sites for the growth of MoO3 nanosheets with increasing specific surface areas. The VG transition layer further improves the electric contact and adhesion of the MoO3 electrode, simultaneously stabilizing its volume and crystal structure during repeated redox reactions. Thus, the prepared VG/MoO3 nanosheets have been demonstrated to exhibit excellent electrochemical properties, such as high reversible capacitance, better cycling performance, and high-rate capability.
Sprinkling MnFe2O4 Quantum Dots on Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Sheets: the Formation Mechanism and Application for High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs)/graphene composites are interesting as promising electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors because they can well integrate the complementary features of QDs and graphene. Herein, we demonstrate a MnFe2O4 QDs/nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) material prepared by a controllable solvothermal synthesis, in which ultra-small MnFe2O4 QDs are uniformly anchored on NG surfaces. First-principles calculations elucidate that the oxygen-containing groups of graphene oxide play a crucial role in generating such a structure, and a ferrite octahedral skeleton is firstly formed followed by Mn atom insertion. Powdery MnFe2O4 QDs/NG exhibits a high specific capacitance of 517 F g(-2) within a negative potential window (-1 approximate to 0 V) in KOH electrolyte. When the lower cut off voltage is extended to -1.2 V, the specific capacitance can be increased to 905 F g(-1). And the condensed MnFe2O4 QDs@NG electrode (forming a similar structure to pitaya slices) with an astonishing loading mass of 18 mg cm(-2) can achieve high areal and volumetric capacitances (5.3 F cm(-2) and 277.6 F cm(-3)). Moreover, carbon encapsulation is favorable for the improvement of rate and cycling performance, allowing a satisfactory capacitance of 150 F g(-1) even at 200 A g(-1) as well as a superior lifetime up to 65000 cycles. These results make such materials competitive with supercapacitor electrodes and may speed up the development of QD-based electrodes for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Reduced graphene nanosheet/urchin-like manganese dioxide (GNS/MnO2) composite for a supercapacitor electrode has been fabricated by a mild hydrothermal route. Following investigation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we propose an in situ formation of MnO2 nanoparticles onto graphene nanosheets. The unique structure greatly increases specific surface area of the composite and the utilization of MnO2. The electrochemical performance of the electrode is analyzed by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectrometry and chronopotentiometry. Results show that the GNS/MnO2 composite exhibits a maximum specific capacitance of 263Fg−1 and an excellent cycle life with capacity retention of about 99% after 500 cycles. The method provides a facile and straightforward approach to deposit MnO2 nanoparticles onto graphene sheets; it could be readily extended to the preparation of other classes of hybrids based on GNS sheets for technological application.

Abstract:Graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are attractive electrode materials for supercapacitors. However, challenges such as the substrate-limited growth of CNTs, nanotube bundling in liquid electrolytes, under-utilized basal planes, and stacking of graphene sheets have so far impeded their widespread application. Here we present a hybrid structure formed by the direct growth of CNTs onto vertical graphene nanosheets (VGNS). VGNS are fabricated by a green plasma-assisted method to break down and reconstruct a natural precursor into an ordered graphitic structure. The synergistic combination of CNTs and VGNS overcomes the challenges intrinsic to both materials. The resulting VGNS/CNTs hybrids show a high specific capacitance with good cycling stability. The charge storage is based mainly on the non-Faradaic mechanism. In addition, a series of optimization experiments were conducted to reveal the critical factors that are required to achieve the demonstrated high supercapacitor performance.

Abstract:We developed a facile, rapid, scalable, and environmentally friendly route to synchronously achieve ultrathin, high-quality graphene and MnO2 nanosheets, which spontaneously migrated and coassembled on a cathodic 3D Ni foam. Abstract:We present a novel approach for hierarchical fabrication of high-performance, all-solid-state, flexible supercapacitors from environmentally friendly all-carbon materials. Three-dimensional carbon nanotube/carbon cloth network (CNT/CC) is used as a conductive, flexible and free-standing scaffold for the electro-deposition of highly N/O co-doped graphene quantum dots to form the high-activity, all-carbon electrodes. The hierarchical structure of the CNT/CC network with high electrical conductivity and high surface area provides improved conductive pathways for the efficient activation of GQDs with high pseudocapacitance and electrical double layer capacitance. The obtained N-O-GQD/CNT/CC electrodes for all-solid-state flexible supercapacitors exhibit an ultrahigh areal capacitance of up to 461 mF cm (2) at a current density of 0.5 mA cm (2), while keeping high rate and cyclic performances. Abstract:A green and facile approach was demonstrated to prepare graphene nanosheets/ZnO (GNS/ZnO) composites for supercapacitor materials. Glucose, as a reducing agent, and exfoliated graphite oxide (GO), as precursor, were used to synthesize GNS, then ZnO directly grew onto conducting graphene nanosheets as electrode materials. The small ZnO particles successfully anchored onto graphene sheets as spacers to keep the neighboring sheets separate. The electrochemical performances of these electrodes were analyzed by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectrometry and chronopotentiometry. Results showed that the GNS/ZnO composites displayed superior capacitive performance with large capacitance (62.2 F/g), excellent cyclic performance, and maximum power density (8.1 kW/kg) as compared with pure graphene electrodes. Our investigation highlight the importance of anchoring of small ZnO particles on graphene sheets for maximum utilization of electrochemically active ZnO and graphene for energy storage application in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Graphene oxide-MnO2 (GO-MnO2) was successfully synthesized by microwave-assisted method with the substrate of GO covered by MnO2. MnO2 contained disordered pore structure and aggregate of random shape. GO exhibited layer-like shape and had a large numbers of functional groups on its surface. The electrochemical measurements were employed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD), the results showed that the GO-MnO2 composite had good capacitive performance, the maximum of specific capacitance was 127 F g-1 at the current density of 100 mA g-1.

Abstract:Transition metal nitrides are promising materials for supercapacitor electrodes owing to their high electrochemical capacity and good chemical stability. However, it remains challenging to control crystallinity, electrical conductivity and electrochemical active sites in the common routes of synthesizing these materials. Here we use a one-step and scalable transferred arc method to prepare TiN nanoparticles, which possess a well-defined cubic crystal structure with a nano-size distribution of 5-20 nm. The TiN nanoparticles are then deposited onto plasma-produced vertical graphene (VG) support materials to form hybrid TiN/VG electrodes for supercapacitors. In aqueous Li2SO4 electrolyte operated at a voltage window of 1.0 V, the TiN/VG hybrid displays areal capacitance more than four times higher than that of commercial TiN deposited VG hybrid. As the voltage window is expanded to 1.8 V, the TiN/VG electrode can achieve areal capacitance of 9.0 mF cm(-2) at a scan rate of 100 mV s(-1) while maintaining 89.5% of the initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles, which are among the highest values reported for TiN nanoparticles. These results indicate that TiN nanoparticles produced by the transferred arc technique are highly promising for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Manganese oxides with different crystalline phases and morphologies were prepared by calcining MnCO 3 precursors. The MnCO 3 precursors with different morphologies were obtained through a green route under hydrothermal conditions with orange pericarp extracting solution as the reducing agent. By calcining the precursor under different temperatures and atmospheres, MnO x with different stoichiometric ratios (i.e., MnO, MnO 2 , Mn 2 O 3 , and Mn 3 O 4 ) can be obtained. Electrochemical studies reveal that among these manganese oxides, MnO or MnO 2 are more suitable as supercapacitor working electrodes than Mn 2 O 3 or Mn 3 O 4 . They exhibit high specific capacitance up to 296.6 F/g and also possess good cycling stability, which make them potential electrode materials for supercapacitors.

Abstract:NiO is a promising electrode material for supercapacitors. Herein, the novel vertically standing nanosized NiO encapsulated in graphene layers (G@NiO) are rationally designed and synthesized as nanosheet arrays. This unique vertical standing structure of G@NiO nanosheet arrays can enlarge the accessible surface area with electrolytes, and has the benefits of short ion diffusion path and good charge transport. Further, an interconnected graphene conductive network acts as binder to encapsulate the nanosized NiO particles as core-shell structure, which can promote the charge transport and maintain the structural stability. Consequently, the optimized G@NiO hybrid electrodes exhibit a remarkably enhanced specific capacity up to 1073 C g(-1) and excellent cycling stability. This study provides a facial strategy to design and construct high-performance metal oxides for energy storage.

Abstract:For aqueous supercapacitors, the voltage window and relatively low energy density have always been the main concerns hindering its development and application. Although the operational voltage window is determined by the intrinsic electrochemical stability of water (1.23 V), such an impediment could be overcome by taking advantage of the additional overpotential of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, vertical graphene nanosheet arrays (VGs) were in situ grown on carbon cloth substrate (CC-VG) via a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method, and a flexible supercapacitor cathode material CC-VG/Na0.5MnO2 was subsequently prepared by electrodeposition and electrochemical oxidation. It is interesting to find that the electrode voltage window for CC-VG/Na0.5MnO2 can be extended to 0–1.3 V with significantly increased specific capacitance up to 525 F/g at 2 A/g benefitting from the presence of VGs and the high Na+ content that increased overpotential of OER by the Na+ deintercalation/intercalation, which shed new lights on developing widen-voltage aqueous supercapacitors with high energy density.

Facile Synthesis of Mn3O4 Nanoparticles Decorated Graphene as Enhanced Performance Electrode for Supercapacitor

Abstract:Graphene was prepared by using the plant stem as a biotemplate through high temperature carbonization and Mn3O4/graphene composites were then prepared via a simple hydrothermal process. The surface morphology and structure of the Mn3O4/graphene hybrids were characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Raman spectra, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrogram (XPS), N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms and electrochemical test. The results showed that the metal oxide nanoparticles were uniformly supported on the surface of graphene. Judging from the XRD, XPS and Raman, we could acquire that the Mn3O4 nanoparticle was in the crystal form while the average crystallite size was about 21 nm. The composites exhibited excellent specific capacitance as high as 196 F/g and the capacitance of the composites was 88% retained after 1000 cycles in 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte at a charging rate of 2 A/g. The superior electrochemical properties could be due to the improved accessible area for ions in electrolytes and enhanced conductivities. The present study provides a facile way to design a high-performance Mn3O4/graphene based supercapacitor electrode and the concept is extendable to other pseudo capacitive electrodes.
Morphology Effect of Vertical Graphene on the High Performance of Supercapacitor Electrode.

Abstract:Graphene and its composites are widely investigated as supercapacitor electrodes due to their large specific surface area. However, the severe aggregation and disordered alignment of graphene sheets hamper the maximum utilization of its surface area. Here we report an optimized structure for supercapacitor electrode, i.e., the vertical graphene sheets, which have a vertical structure and open architecture for ion transport pathway. The effect of morphology and orientation of vertical graphene on the performance of supercapacitor is examined using a combination of model calculation and experimental study. Both results consistently demonstrate that the vertical graphene electrode has a much superior performance than that of lateral graphene electrode. Typically, the areal capacitances of a vertical graphene electrode reach 8.4 mF/cm(2) at scan rate of 100 mV/s; this is about 38% higher than that of a lateral graphene electrode and about 6 times higher than that of graphite paper. To further improve its performance, a MnO2 nanoflake layer is coated on the surface of graphene to provide a high pseudocapacitive contribution to the overall areal capacitance which increases to 500 mF/cm(2) at scan rate of 5 mV/s. The reasons for these significant improvements are studied in detail and are attributed to the fast ion diffusion and enhanced charge storage capacity. The microscopic manipulation of graphene electrode configuration could greatly improve its specific capacitance, and furthermore, boost the energy density of supercapacitor. Our results demonstrate that the vertical graphene electrode is more efficient and practical for the high performance energy storage device with high power and energy densities.
Nano Carbon/Vertical Graphene/MnO 2 Nanosheets Composite Particles for High‐Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Compounding carbon substrate materials with pseudocapacitive materials is an important strategy for making high‐performance supercapacitor materials. Nano carbon black (CB) is widely used as the conductive additive in energy storage devices owing to its low cost, high conductivity, good spreadability, and excellent ability of adsorbing electrolyte, reducing the binder consumption, adjusting the pore size and fraction of the electrode, and high‐voltage operation. However, very little attention has been paid to applying CB as the substrate materials for producing composite active materials. Herein, a surface‐modified CB is developed by growing vertical graphene nanosheets on the surface of CB by chemical vapor deposition. After growing MnO2 nanosheets on the modified CB, the obtained nanocomposites deliver high specific capacitance, rate performance, and cycling stability. The assembled symmetric supercapacitor obtains a high energy density of 54 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 181 W kg−1. Systematic experimental research reveals the superior performance benefits from the surface modification of CB by vertical graphene nanosheets, which improves the electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and pore structure of the whole electrodes. This method is of great promise for the development of new materials for high‐performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:On page 5091 Prof. Jun Zhou, Prof. Kaifu Huo, and co-workers demonstrate high-performance all-solid-state supercapacitors based on flexible, free-standing mesoporous vanadium nitride nanowire (MVNN)/carbon nanotube hybrid electrodes. The MVNNs are synthesized by way of a hydrothermal synthesis followed by thermal nitridation under an ammonia atmosphere. The devices show a stable performance and high volumetric capacitance, along with high volume energy and power density. These electrodes have potential applications in portable/wearable electronics.

Abstract:Nanostructured mesoporous carbon materials have been an attractive material for electrochemical energy storage in the recent decades. However, the controllable synthesis of two-dimensional mesoporous carbon with tunable thickness and desired pore structure is highly challenging. Here, a series of graphene@mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon (denoted as G@mesoNC) core-shell structured nanosheets with tunable thicknesses have been fabricated via a sample hydrothermal method by using cellulose as the green and cheap carbon precursor. The resultant G@mesoNC nanosheets exhibit a distinct sandwich-like structure with tunable thicknesses (from 10 to 30 nm), a large surface area (562 m(2) g(-1)), a narrow pore size distribution (2.3 nm) and a high nitrogen content (7.95%). Significantly, when being used as the electrode for supercapaciors, the resultant G@mesoNC nanosheets showcase a high specific capacitance of 264 F g(-1). Most importantly, there is no substantial capacitance decay after 2500 cycles, indicating the perfect cyclic stability of G@mesoNC nanosheets. Our method paves a new way for synthesizing carbon electrodes for energy storage.

Benefiting from the microwave synthetic method, uniform V2O5 nanoparticles with an approximately size of 20 nm are evenly dispersed on graphene. The resultant V2O5/graphene composites are assembled into symmetrical supercapacitors, exhibiting specific capacitances of 673.2 and 474.6 F g−1 at 1 and 10 A g−1, respectively, and 96.8% of capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 1 A g−1. Additionally, the assembled devices show outstanding energy density and power density characteristics (46.8 Wh kg−1 at 499.4 W kg−1 and 32.9 Wh kg−1 at 4746.0 W kg−1), which are superior than many similar devices. Furthermore, capacitive performances of V2O5/graphene composites with five different component ratios are thoroughly investigated and the charge storage mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:In this study, a new, effective strategy is reported for the fabrication of composites using manganese oxide (MnO2) grown in situ on three-dimensional (3D) graphene by the reverse microemulsion (water-in-oil) method. A uniform coating of nanoscale MnO2 layers can be observed on the internal surface of 3D graphene, which could benefit rapid ionic and electronic transport. The electrochemical performance of the MnO2/3D graphene composites is optimized by the control of the composite structure and mass loading of MnO2. The MnO2/3D graphene composite thus prepared exhibits a significantly high specific capacitance of 659.7 F g(-1) at 03 A g(-1) and an excellent retention life of 106% after 1000 cycles. The facile synthesis and excellent electrochemical performance of the MnO2/3D graphene composites indicate that the developed method demonstrates potential applications for the fabrication of novel electrode materials for use in energy storage devices.
