Abstract:Hierarchical micro/nano-structured FePO4 (FP) particles were environmental-friendly and controllable synthesized through synergistic intensification of ultrasound and impinging streams. Nano-scale FP seeds were firstly synthesized via ultrasound irradiation intensified impinging stream reaction (UISR), where the enhanced turbulent micromixing in the impinging streams benefits the nucleation process while the application of ultrasound to the impinging streams further intensifies such micromixing. The ultrasound frequency and power applied were 20 kHz and 600 W. The hierarchical micro/nano-structured FP particles are obtained when taking sufficient reaction time and stirring FP nano-seeds in a continuous stirring tank reactor (CSTR). Effects of the sonochemical pre-treatment, mean residence time and rotation speed on the physical-chemical properties of FP were investigated systematically. The characterization revealed that under the optimum operating condition, the FP particles presented near-spherical hierarchical micro/nano-structure, consisting of nanoscale primary grains. The mechano-chemical effects on the synthesized FP particles during different synthesis process were also studied. (C) 2020 The Society of Powder Technology Japan. Abstract:Coprecipitation is by far the most common synthesis method for iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs). However, reproducibility and scalability represent a major challenge. Therefore, innovative processes for scalable pro-duction of IONPs are highly sought after. Here, we explored the combination of microwave heating with a flow reactor producing IONPs through coprecipitation. The synthesis was initially studied in a well-characterised microwave-heated flow system, enabling the synthesis of multicore IONPs, with control over both the single core size and the multicore hydrodynamic diameter. The effect of residence time and microwave power was investigated, enabling the synthesis of multicore nanostructures with hydrodynamic diameter between -35 and 70 nm, with single core size of 3-5 nm. Compared to particles produced under conventional heating, similar single core sizes were observed, though with smaller hydrodynamic diameters. The process comprised of the initial IONP coprecipitation followed by the addition of the stabiliser (citric acid and dextran). The ability of precisely controlling the stabiliser addition time (distinctive of flow reactors), contributed to the synthesis reproducibility. Finally, scale-up by increasing the reactor length and using a different microwave cavity was demonstrated, producing particles of similar structure as those from the small scale system, with a throughput of 3.3 g/h.

Abstract:A facile approach for the synthesis of ultralight iron oxide hierarchical structures with tailorable macro- and mesoporosity is reported. This method entails the growth of porous Prussian blue (PB) single crystals on the surface of a polyurethane sponge, followed by in situ thermal conversion of PB crystals into three-dimensional mesoporous iron oxide (3DMI) architectures. Compared to previously reported ultralight materials, the 3DMI architectures possess hierarchical macro- and mesoporous frameworks with multiple advantageous features, including high surface area (ca. 117 m(2) g(-1)) and ultralow density (6-11 mg cm(-3)). Furthermore, they can be synthesized on a kilogram scale. More importantly, these 3DMI structures exhibit superparamagnetism and tunable hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, thus allowing for efficient multiphase interfacial adsorption and fast multiphase catalysis.
Microwave-Assisted Synthesis and Photocatalytic Performance of a Soluble Porphyrinic MOF

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of promising heterogeneous catalysts, though readily recyclable, usually suffer from poor dispersity and ease of sedimentation in liquid-phase reaction systems, which may lead to limited exposure of active sites and unsatisfied activity. Conventional hydrothermal synthesis often results in large MOF particles in bulk form and poor dispersity. The homogenization of MOF catalysts is an exciting but challenging task to integrate the advantages of both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, by means of microwave-assisted synthetic approach, a soluble porphyrinic MOF, denoted as S-Al-PMOF, has been successfully fabricated. In contrast to the Bulk-Al-PMOF synthesized by the conventional hydrothermal route, which requires 180 C and 16 h, the S-Al-PMOF obtained by the microwave-assisted method is very efficient and takes 30 min only at 140 C. While the as-synthesized S-Al-PMOF can be completely soluble in acetonitrile by ultrasonic dispersion to give a clear and transparent colloidal solution, the Bulk-Al-PMOF can form a turbid suspension liquid by continuous stirring, which easily aggregate with sedimentation in a short time after standing. Furthermore, the S-Al-PMOF can be easily separated from the solution by suction filtration and then re-dissolved in acetonitrile. This separation and re-dissolution process can be repeated several times to prove its good recovery and recycling. Given the outstanding light harvesting ability of Al-PMOR photocatalytic H-2 production by water splitting has been adopted to examine the activity of both S-Al-PMOF and Bulk-Al-PMOF. As a result, the activity of S-Al-PMOF is around 14 times higher than that of Bulk-Al-PMOF, owing to excellent solubility of the former. Moreover, S-Al-PMOF also exhibits good recyclability in the consecutive three cycles of reaction. We believe that the successful synthesis of soluble Al-PMOF opens a new avenue to the homogenization of heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:The hierarchical spherical alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures were obtained by polyacrylamide (PAM)-assisted microwave fabrication method. The nanostructures exhibited mesoporous structures with relatively high remanent magnetization and coercivity at 300 K. The PAM was believed to play an important role in the formation of the hierarchical spherical alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures.

Abstract:An innovative and effective technological process is proposed to synthetize spinel manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) by a microwave-assisted oxidization roasting process. In the current paper, the effect of operating variables on the formation mechanism of Fe-MnO systems for synthesizing spinel MnFe2O4 is initially investigated to reveal the oxidation mechanism and phase transformation during the micro-wave-assisted oxidative roasting process. The synthetic MnFe2O4 microparticles with a saturation mag-netization (Ms) of 70.5 emu/g, a coercivity (Hc) of 4.65 Oe and a ratio of the saturation magnetization to remanent magnetization (Ms/Mr) of 0.055 were successfully prepared by heating for 30 min at 1000 degrees C in an air atmosphere. The MnFe2O4 samples exhibited normal and inverse spinel crystal structures, inevita-bly coexisting and co-transforming simultaneously at high temperature (>= 950 degrees C). Furthermore, this innovative and effective technological process can be extended to fabricate other spinel ferrite particles of interest. Abstract:γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were synthesized in the valve-assisted micromixer. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In the packed bed flow reactor, the investigation concerning the comparison of different heating methods demonstrated that microwave irradiation displayed the best reaction efficiency compared with air heating and oil-bath heating. A novel micro-flow system under microwave irradiation was designed and employed in the condensation of aldehyde, ethyl acetoacetate and ammonia. Under optimized conditions, Hantzsch reaction conducted well, resulting in a yield of 98.7% and excellent selectivity. In addition, this novel process worked well for other substrates.

Abstract:Herein, we report a novel nanoliter droplet-based microfluidic strategy for continuous and ultrafast synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF) crystals and MOF heterostructures. Representative MOF structures, such as HKUST-1, MOF-5, IRMOF-3, and UiO-66, were synthesized within a few minutes via solvothermal reactions with substantially faster kinetics in comparison to the conventional batch processes. The approach was successfully extended to the preparation of a demanding Ru3BTC2 structure that requires high-pressure hydrothermal synthesis conditions. Finally, three different types of core-shell MOF composites, i.e., Co3BTC2@Ni3BTC2, MOF-5@diCH3-MOF-5, and Fe3O4@ZIF-8, were synthesized by exploiting a unique two-step integrated microfluidic synthesis scheme in a continuous-flow mode. The synthesized MOF crystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and BET surface area measurements. In comparison with bare MOF-5, MOF-5@diCH3-MOF-5 showed enhanced structural stability in the presence of moisture, and the catalytic performance of Fe3O4@ZIF-8 was examined using Knoevenagel condensation as a probe reaction. The microfluidic strategy allowed continuous fabrication of high-quality MOF crystals and composites exhibiting distinct morphological characteristics in a time-efficient manner and represents a viable alternative to the time-consuming and multistep MOF synthesis processes.

Abstract:Nanostructured M(II)-substituted MxFe3-xO4 magnetic ferrites (M = Fe, Mn, or Co; x = 0–1) spherolites have been successfully prepared by a convenient, robust and time-saving microwave-assisted reflux method in EG solvent without any surfactants addition. The formation of ferrite nanostructures is extremely rapid and occurs within 30 min of microwave heating via aggregation-based mechanism. The as-prepared magnetic nanostrured spherolites exhibit high surface area and excellent magnetic properties at room temperature.

Abstract:The synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles using continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS) reactor systems is an up-and-coming process to manufacture high-quality nanomaterials with singular control of the experimental parameters on the scale of seconds as opposed to hours. VO2-based systems manufactured using an autoclave reactor lack scalability, and current commercial products feature particle sizes too large for feasible application. In this paper, the detailed implementation of a CHFS system that can operate at and above supercritical water conditions (22.06 MPa at 374 ̊C) is described. Control over the CHFS system’s temperature, flow rate, and precursor concentration parameters allowed the tunability of size, crystallinity, and shape of VO2 nanoparticles to be investigated across seven studies. The resulting VO2 nanoparticles were characterized for size, shape, morphology, and crystallinity using dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and x-ray diffraction (XRD). This investigation resulted in new operating procedures that enable the synthesis of high-quality, uniform, spherical, and pure M-phase VO2 nanoparticles under 50 nm in diameter in the residence time of a few seconds. Additionally, the procedure described in this paper is performed in a single step, thus eliminating the tedious post-annealing process.

Abstract:Hollow or porous hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoarchitectures have emerged as promising crystals in the advanced materials research. In this contribution, hierarchical mesoporous α-Fe2O3 nanoarchitectures with a pod-like shape were synthesized via a room-temperature coprecipitation of FeCl3 and NaOH solutions, followed by a mild hydrothermal treatment (120°C to 210°C, 12.0 h). A formation mechanism based on the hydrothermal evolution was proposed. β-FeOOH fibrils were assembled by the reaction-limited aggregation first, subsequent and in situ conversion led to compact pod-like α-Fe2O3 nanoarchitectures, and finally high-temperature, long-time hydrothermal treatment caused loose pod-like α-Fe2O3 nanoarchitectures via the Ostwald ripening. The as-synthesized α-Fe2O3 nanoarchitectures exhibit good absorbance within visible regions and also exhibit an improved performance for Li-ion storage with good rate performance, which can be attributed to the porous nature of Fe2O3 nanoarchitectures. This provides a facile, environmentally benign, and low-cost synthesis strategy for α-Fe2O3 crystal growth, indicating the as-prepared α-Fe2O3 nanoarchitectures as potential advanced functional materials for energy storage, gas sensors, photoelectrochemical water splitting, and water treatment.

Abstract:Using two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets as new building blocks to create more complex architectures at the mesoscopic/macroscopic scale has attracted extensive interest in recent years. Nevertheless, it remains a great challenge to assemble MOF nanosheets into hierarchical hollow structures so far. In this paper, we describe a successful example of hierarchical MOF nanosheet microcapsules, with precisely controlled sizes, produced on large scale within minutes with a continuous droplet microfluidic strategy. Following a reaction/diffusion growth mechanism, the microcapsule shells feature a continuous smooth inner layer and a porous outer layer. Such hierarchical structure enables the encapsulation of magnetite nanoparticles inside and loading of dense gold nanoparticles outside the microcapsules, which exhibit highly efficient heterogeneous catalytic activity and easy recyclability. The present microfluidic assembly method offers a new pathway for preparing hierarchical MOF nanosheet structures, with the potential for extension to the formation of other 2D nanosheets in general.

Abstract:Microreactors excel in nanomaterial preparation but are limited by microchannel clogging for sustained long-term use. This study reports an innovative design of an ultrasound-assisted vortex microreactor for the continuous synthesis of high-performance nano-Fe3O4 particles. Combining visual experiments with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, four vortex microreactors were designed, and their mixing and heat transfer processes were investigated. Through comprehensive analysis, microreactor-4 was identified as the optimal configuration, with an optimal flow rate of 1 mL/min and a temperature of 70 °C. By coupling the microreactor with ultrasound, a continuous preparation method for nano-Fe3O4 was realized. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses revealed that the synthesized nano-Fe3O4 particles exhibit a spherical crystal morphology with an average particle size of approximately 6.68 nm, which is 24.4 % and 20.5 % smaller than those prepared by the beaker method and by a stirred-field coupled microreactor reported in the literature, respectively. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) measurements indicated a saturation magnetization of 45.75 emu/g for the nano-Fe3O4, representing a 32.3 % increase over the beaker method and demonstrating excellent superparamagnetic properties. This study provides a novel and effective pathway for the continuous preparation of nanoscale magnetic materials.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a facile, an environmental friendly ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal route for preparation of goethite flower structures using Fe nanopowders at low temperature (85°C). The flower structure consisted of tens of hundreds of nanowires and such structures can further self-assemble with the flake with micro size area. Structural, morphological, and elemental analysis revealed that the products consisted of flower-like structures with high structural uniformity, good crystal quality, and high yields. Influencing factors such as the reaction temperature, pH value, and the deposition time were systematically investigated. A possible formation mechanism was proposed on the basis of the experimental results. Magnetic measurements showed that the as-obtained goethite flowers exhibited weakly ferromagnetic characteristics at room temperature, which were quite different from those of the corresponding bulk materials.
Microfluidic continuous flow synthesis of functional hollow spherical silica with hierarchical sponge-like large porous shell

Abstract:Microfluidics brings unique opportunities for engineering micro-/nanomaterials with well-controlled physicochemical properties. Herein, using a miniaturized multi-run spiral-shaped microreactor, we develop a flow synthesis strategy to continuously produce hollow spherical silica (HSS) with hierarchical sponge-like pore sizes ranging from several nanometers to over one hundred nanometers. The formation of HSS is realized by mixing two reactant flows, one containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and diluted ammonia and the other 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB) and diluted tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), at a flow rate as high as 5 mL/min. The effect of the reactant concentration and the flow rate on the structural change of the resultant materials is examined. Functional small-sized nanoparticles (magnetic nanoparticle, quantum dot, and silver nanoparticle) can be separately assembled into HSS and high molecular weight protein (bovine serum albumin) can be successfully loaded into HSS and delivered into cancer cells afterward, making them promising in the fields of separation and purification, bioimaging, catalysis, and theranostics.

Abstract:Facile syntheses of branched hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) crystals with fine-tuning of their nanoscale subunit morphologies were reported. Starting from Prussian red and bisolvent systems with controlled temperature as the crucial parameters, fine-tuning of the nanoscale subunit morphologies in the context of controlling the anisotropic growth of branched alpha-Fe2O3 crystals was demonstrated. The systematic and optimized studies significantly improved the controlled synthesis of the hierarchical growth of nanoscale subunits, leading to the formation of branched dendritic leaflike (secD3D, tertD2D, and tertD3D) and hyperbranched (secS2D and hypB2D) alpha-Fe2O3 particles for their size-reduced variants used in photocatalysis. The kinetics of the photo-Fenton degradation of three azo dyes (chlorazol black, direct blue, and methyl orange) with five types of branched dendritic alpha-Fe2O3 particles were compared systematically.

Abstract:Thermal decomposition, as the main synthetic procedure for the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles (NPs), is facing several problems, such as high reaction temperatures and time consumption. An improved a microwave-assisted thermal decomposition procedure has been developed by which monodisperse Fe3O4 NPs could be rapidly produced at a low aging temperature with high yield (90.1%). The as-synthesized NPs show excellent inductive heating and MRI properties in vitro. In contrast, Fe3O4 NPs synthesized by classical thermal decomposition were obtained in very low yield (20.3%) with an overall poor quality. It was found for the first time that, besides precursors and solvents, magnetic NPs themselves could be heated by microwave irradiation during the synthetic process. These findings were demonstrated by a series of microwave-heating experiments, Raman spectroscopy and vector-network analysis, indicating that the initially formed magnetic Fe3O4 particles were able to transform microwave energy into heat directly and, thus, contribute to the nanoparticle growth.
