Abstract:Potentiometric detection of fluoro-surfactants formulated in aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) is demonstrated using molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) formed on pencil lead. We introduce an ingredient of methylene blue (MB) into the polymer matrix of polypyrrole (PPY) to increase the selectivity due to the formation of ion-pairs of AFFF-MB. Fluoro-surfactants including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (6:2FTS) are specifically detected in the range of 10 mu M-10 mM with the limit-of-detection (LOD) down to similar to 100 nM (or similar to 41 ppb for PFOA). The interference caused by anionic surfactants of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid sodium (SDBS) is tested and the negative response is discussed. Abstract:Fluoro-solid phase extraction (fluoro-SPE) has been well established to selectively extract targets after they have been fluoro-tagged. Here we report that this technique can also be used to selectively extract fluorosurfactants of PFAS (per- and poly-fluoroakyl substances), which have fluoro-carbon skeletons, from other anionic surfactants that have no fluoro-carbon skeletons. We advance the fluoro-SPE protocol to enable the extraction of fluorosurfactants using 4-5 times (in volume) more solvent for fluorophilic eluting in effort to overcome the strong interaction between the fluorosurfactants and the fluoro-Gel. Based on a smartphone-based app we developed recently to assess the colouration of fluorosurfactants with a dye (ethyl violet) that is similar to MBAS (methylene blue active substances), plus an SPE for pre-concentration and fluoro-SPE for pre-selection, we successfully achieve a detection limit of 1 ppb for the PFAS including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2FTS), which is encouraging and can be conducted in a general laboratory.

Abstract:Aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) are the primary source of toxic perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wastewater. Thus, it is urgent to develop a facile and fast method for identifying fluorosurfactants in commercially available AFFFs. In this work, fluorine nuclear magnetic resonance (19F NMR) spectroscopy was optimized to measure AFFFs directly with the extra addition of 5% D2O as the locking reagent, and high-quality spectra could be acquired within 4 min (0.1% fluorosurfactant content). Recovery experiments demonstrated that the use of different AFFFs had no marked influence on the quantitative analysis of fluorosurfactants. Such method works with low-field NMR spectroscopy (1.4 T) as well. Two-dimensional (2D) 19F COSY NMR was used to make signal assignments for different fluorosurfactant derivatives. The optimized 19F NMR could quantify the commercially available fluorosurfactants in different AFFFs, identify them being in either the perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) or fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (FTS) categories, and distinguish the head-group of PFOS and FTS derivatives, which exhibits great potentials in the developments of relevant commercial detections.

Abstract:In the last years, surface-enhanced Raman scattering based immunochromatographic assay (SERS-ICA) has been getting great attention and been applied for the detection of different target analytes. In this study, a novel SERS-ICA using Ag-MBA@SiO2-Ab as an immunoprobe has been developed for rapid, quantitative and ultrasensitive detection of a pharmaceutical diclofenac (DCF) residue in water samples. Ag, Ag@SiO2 and Ag-MBA@SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and characterized. The immunoprobe was prepared by sandwiching the Raman reporter mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) between the core-shell layers and immobilizing the monoclonal antibody (mAb) against DCF on the surface of the Ag@SiO2 NPs. Under optimal conditions, the sensitivity and limit of detection (LOD) of the SERS-ICA for DCF were found to be 9 pg mL(-1) and 0.07 pg mL(-1), respectively. The detection of the SERS-ICA for DCF was completed within 15 min. Ag-MBA@SiO2-Ab was stable within four months without significant loss of SERS intensity. The key to success of the SERS-ICA was the employment of the Ag@SiO2 NPs as the SERS substrate, which possessed gorgeous SERS enhancement capability, predominant biocompatibility and excellent stability. This SERS-ICA is potential as an ultrasensitive analytical method in point-of-care testing, clinical diagnosis, food inspecting and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering （SERS） provides important applications in diverse fields.In order to achieve high-precision SERS detection of trace molecules,current research focuses on how to increase the density of hot spots and the number of analyte molecules in the detection area.An ultrafast laser can rapidly construct large-area micro/nano-structures on material surfaces.It is important for the commercial preparation of highperformance SERS sensors.In this paper,the ultrafast laser preparation of high-performance SERS sensors is introduced from the aspect of the density of hot spots and the number of analyte molecules in the detection region.Ultrafast lasers enable both"bottom-up"and"top-down"processing.In particular,the superhydrophobic surface prepared by the ultrafast laser is one of the most effective methods to achieve the enrichment of analyte molecules.Finally,a prospect for the development of laser-prepared SERS substrates is provided.
Extremely Sensitive SERS Sensors Based on a Femtosecond Laser-Fabricated Superhydrophobic/-philic Microporous Platform

Abstract:The detection of molecules from highly diluted solutions with a limited amount is vital for precancer diagnosis, food safety, and forensic analysis. The sensitivity and convenience of detection techniques are the primary concerns. In this study, a hybrid superhydrophobic/-philic (SH/SHL) microporous platform is designed and fabricated by a femtosecond laser to improve surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performances. Relying on the micropores fabricated at the center of SHL patterns, sediments distributed at the central regions are avoided, leading to the further enrichment of the target molecules. The engineered micropores with high identification further improve the speed of Raman tests, and the fabricated SERS substrate shows an advantage in outdoor handheld detection and automated inspection applications. The optimized SERS sensor is sufficient for attomolar-level detection (10-17 M) of rhodamine 6G using analyte volumes of just 5 μL, corresponding to an enhancement factor of 5.19 × 1013. Meanwhile, a relative standard deviation of 7.48% at 10-10 M shows the excellent uniformity of this proposed SERS platform. This work further pushes forward the practical applications of SERS technology in ultratrace molecular detections.

Abstract:We present a microfluidic technique for sensitive, real-time, optimized detection of airborne water-soluble molecules by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The method is based on a free-surface fluidic device in which a pressure-driven liquid microchannel flow is constrained by surface tension. A colloidal suspension of silver nanoparticles flowing through the microchannel that is open to the atmosphere absorbs gas-phase 4-aminobenzenethiol (4-ABT) from the surrounding environment. As surface ions adsorbed on the colloid nanoparticles are substituted by 4-ABT, the colloid aggregates, forming SERS “hot spots” whose concentrations vary predictably along the microchannel flow. 4-ABT confined in these hot spots produces SERS spectra of very great intensity. An aggregation model is used to account quantitatively for the extent of colloid aggregation as determined from the variation of the SERS intensity measured as a function of the streamwise position along the microchannel, which also corresponds to nanoparticle exposure time. This allows us to monitor simultaneously the nanoparticle aggregation process and to determine the location at which the SERS signal is optimized.

Abstract:In 1997, the discovery of single molecule-surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SM-SERS) rekindled broad interests owing to its ultrahigh enhancement factor up to the 1014-1015 level. However, regretfully, the advantage of SM-SERS with an ultralow detection limit has not yet been fully utilized in commercialized applications. Here, we report a strategy, which we name confined-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, in which the overall Raman properties can be remarkably improved with in situ-formed active nanoshell on the surface of silver or gold nanoparticles. The nanoshell can confine and anchor molecules onto the surface of plasmonic nanoparticles and avoid desorption from hot spots so that the "on and off"blinking effect can be eliminated. It is the first time the single-molecule detection of analytes with super sensitivity, high stability, and reproducibility based on gold nanoparticles has been realized. In addition, this strategy is suitable for SERS detection in diverse molecule systems, including biomedical diagnosis, catalytic reaction, etc.

Abstract:Significance Many analytes in real-life samples, such as body fluids, soil contaminants, and explosives, are dispersed in liquid, solid, or air phases. However, it remains a challenge to create a platform to detect these analytes in all of these phases with high sensitivity and specificity. Here, we demonstrate a universal platform termed slippery liquid-infused porous surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SLIPSERS) that enables the enrichment and delivery of analytes originating from various phases into surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-sensitive sites and their subsequent detection down to the subfemtomolar level (<10 −15 mol⋅L −1 ). Based on SLIPSERS, we have demonstrated detection of various chemicals, biological molecules, and environmental contaminants with high sensitivity and specificity. Our platform may lead to ultrasensitive molecular detection for applications related to analytical chemistry, diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and national security.

Abstract:Perfluoro- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely used throughout the world and are extensively found in the environment. The detection of PFAS has become essential to ensuring environmental sustainability and human health. Herein, AuNRs were synthesized by the seed growth method and then the samples were coated with silver shells to form Au@Ag core–shell nanorods (Au@AgNRs). Au@AgNRs monolayer was prepared by oil–water self-assembly on a silicon wafer and then was constructed as a plasmonic AgNPs/Au@AgNRs sandwich structure for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of PFAS. The shell thickness of Au@AgNRs was optimized and displayed a 11.9-fold SERS intensity higher than the pristine AuNRs. Moreover, the hotspots generated by the electromagnetic field coupling between the interlayer gap achieved 3.6-fold SERS signal enhancement compared to that of the Au@AgNRs monolayer. Besides, the excellent structural uniformity (RSD ∼ 8.0%) makes it ideal for quantitative SERS detection applications. More importantly, the use of the AgNPs/Au@AgNRs sandwich structure sensor enables the highly sensitive detection of model molecules (10–11 M) and quantitative detection of a wide range of fluorinated alkyl substances of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), and potassium perfluorobutanesulfonate (PPFBS), even with a portable Raman device. And the detection concentration can be down to 0.1 ppm for PFAS. This sensitive and quantitative SERS technique has promising prospects in the monitoring of fluorinated alkyl substance contaminations.

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) stands as an exceptionally sensitive spectroscopic method extensively employed in various research fields, such as environmental monitoring, molecular diagnosis, food safety, and biochemistry. The study of semiconductor/noble-metal based SERS substrates has exponentially increased due to the apparent enhancement of Raman signal intensity by the synergistic utilization of electromagnetic and charge transfer mechanisms through the enhanced plasmonic and vibronic characteristics. Constructing an optimal assembly as a SERS substrate is the purpose pursued by many researchers. Herein, we present a promising semiconductor/noble-metal nanocomposite by photoreduction of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on the hydrothermally synthesized hierarchical α-Fe2O3 snowflakes (SFs) through the green photoreduction technique. Various analytical characterization methods were employed to examine the physiochemical characteristics of the α-Fe2O3-SFs/Ag. The presented α-Fe2O3-SFs/Ag based SERS substrate enables ultra-sensitive detection of antibiotic nitrofurazone (NFZ) with the extremely low limit of detection of 3.12 × 10–14 M, the utmost enhancement factor of 3.08 × 1012, satisfactory uniformity and high reproducibility. The excellent SERS activity of the synthesized α-Fe2O3-SFs/Ag nanocomposite is owing to the generation of innumerable hotspots and the effective charge transfer for sublime Raman signal enhancement through the synergism of electromagnetic and charge transfer mechanisms. The α-Fe2O3-SFs/Ag based SERS substrate shows high recovery rate in the range of 89.9–98.78 % for detection of NFZ in the pond water and the fish feed solution for real-sample analysis. The proposed strategy in our study can efficiently detect trace amounts of NFZ in physiological circumstances and could contribute to the advancement of ultra-sensitive SERS based detection techniques.

Abstract:Liquid fuel is flammable and hazardous, and a pool fire is one of the most serious disasters. Therefore, it is important to develop high-performance firefighting agents. To synthesize aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) formulations, two C6 short-chain fluorocarbon surfactants Capstone 1157 (FC1157) and sodium perfluorohexylethyl sulfonate (SF852) with different hydrophilic groups were introduced, and three hydrocarbon surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), decyl glucoside (APG0810), and coco glucoside (APG0814) were chosen. The AFFF formulations based on the short-chain fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon compounding system were developed, and the firefighting performance of the formulations was assessed according to the standard pool fire extinction test. The results indicated that amphoteric FC1157 was slightly more effective than anionic SF852 in extinguishing small-scale pool fires and could reduce heat flux more effectively than SF852. Fluorocarbon surfactant FC1157 has been shown to suppress large pool fires much better than SF852, possibly due to its higher foam stability, higher foaming property, lower dynamic surface tension, and lower bubble coarsening rate. Both formulations we studied were more effective than commercial AFFF formulations. A concentration of 0.1-0.3% of FC1157 in an AFFF solution was optimal for extinguishing high-boiling-point oil fires.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been proven a powerful means in detecting molecules/chemicals at trace levels due to its huge enhancement in the signal intensity of the finger prints of the molecules. The SERS experiments were carried out using Ag nanorods deposited on silicon substrates homogeneously, by e-beam glancing angle deposition (GLAD) technique, with controlled morphology and size, guranteening the homogeneity of the SERS signals from area to area. However, these substrates are facing several problems due to the thermal stability, temporal stability and chemical stability, etc. of Ag nanostructures. We proposed several approaches to solve these problems to make Ag-based nanostructures applicable as SERS substrates. In addition, we proposed a method to quantify the composition of chemical mixtures at trace levels by SERS, based on the principle components analysis (PCA), which is a statistical method normally used to distinguish chemicals in mixtures. The method was evidenced to be effective in predicting the composition of binary, ternary mixtures and even mixtures consisting of more components at trace levels by SERS, with acceptable errors.

Abstract:It is important and necessary to effectively detect the chemical warfare agents, such as highly toxic never agent sarin. However, based on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect, detection of nerve agent simulant dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) which is weakly interacted with SERS-active substrate has been the most challenge for the routine SERS detection method. To overcome this challenge, we put forward a thin water film confined SERS strategy. Under the space-confinement of water film, Raman measurements are carried out in the water evaporation process. The subsequent water evaporation induces concentrating of the DMMP molecules, which are thus successfully restricted within the strong electromagnetic field enhanced area above the SERS substrates, leading to the enhancement of their Raman signals. This study provides a new way to achieve the efficient SERS-based detection of the target molecules weakly interacted with the metal substrates.
Floating silver film: A flexible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrate for direct liquid phase detection at gas–liquid interfaces

Abstract:In recent years, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has developed rapidly and is used for the detection of molecules and biomolecules in liquids. However, few studies have focused on SERS using a water surface as the substrate. A floating metal film on water is desirable for an enhanced SERS performance. In this work, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) encased in poly(vinylpyrrolidone) films (Ag-PVP films) were synthesized on the surface of an aqueous solution by room temperature electron reduction. A floating silver film on a water surface was thereby achieved and is reported for the first time. The synthesized Ag-PVP film is an excellent flexible substrate for SERS and has other potential applications. Using the floating silver film as a flexible SERS substrate, 10–11 M of 4-aminothiophenol, 10–6 M of riboflavin, 10–9 M of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, 10–7 M of 4-mercaptophenol, and 10–7 M of 4-aminobenzoic acid are identified, demonstrating potential use for the floating substrate in the liquid-phase detection of molecules.

Abstract:<p>A handheld, spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS) system was successfully used to obtain Surface‐enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) spectra of fentanyl under simulated field conditions. A series of aqueous fentanyl solutions were prepared with commercially available gold nanoparticle solution, at concentrations ranging from 0.003 to 1697 μM. These SERS spectra were then used to generate two concentration calibration models (via a plot of peak area (1026 cm<sup>−1</sup>) versus concentration, and quantitative spectral decomposition using partial least squares (PLS1)). For both models, the relationship followed Langmuir adsorption and became non‐linear at concentrations above ~0.2 μM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of approximately 3 nM. The same technique was successfully used to measure fentanyl in the presence of two common "cutting agents," heroin and glucose, at 1% and 2% fentanyl proportions (w/w). Fentanyl detection was successfully achieved, but mixture interference from the cutting agents prevented a calibration model being generated. Four fentanyl analogues were also investigated—butyrylfentanyl, furanylfentanyl, acetylfentanyl, and ocfentanyl. A concentration calibration model for each species was successfully generated, but differentiation from fentanyl proved more challenging, although several potential diagnostic peaks were identified. These results identified a pathway forward in using handheld equipment for the reliable detection of ultra‐low concentrations of fentanyl and fentanyl analogues via SERS, even when mixed with diluents. However, quantitative detection is negatively impacted in the presence of heroin and glucose. This also provides a starting point for a SERS‐based spectral library of fentanyl analogues, in combination with a range of different diluents.</p>

Abstract:A simple and rapid method for detecting chemical components of individual aerosol particles on Klarite substrate with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is described. For both single simulated aerosol particles and ambient atmospheric particles, this new analytical method promotes the enhancement factor of the Raman signal. The spectra of ammonium sulfate and naphthalene particles at the microscopic level are enhanced by a factor of 6 and therefore greatly improve the detection of the chemical composition of an individual aerosol particle. When aerosol particles are found over a microscopic domain, a set of Raman spectra with chemical information can be obtained via SERS mapping. The maps illustrate the distribution of organic or inorganic species on the SERS substrate. This constitutes a facile and rapid method to study aerosol particles. This new method allows the analysis of chemical composition in single aerosol particles, demonstrating the power of SERS to probe the ambient atmospheric particles and to study the formation of aerosol particles.
Synthesis and characterization of a novel surfactant used for aqueous film-forming foam extinguishing agent

Abstract:Fluorocarbon surfactants are a key ingredient of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) extinguishing agent. As is well known, the most widely used fluorocarbon surfactants are perfluorooctane sulfonates (PFOS) and theirs derivatives. However, PFOS has been restricted due to its drawbacks such as toxicity, bio-accumulation and resistance to biodegradation, etc. Fortunately, the toxicity and bio-accumulation can be neglected if the fluorocarbon chain contained in the surfactants is less than or equal to 4. Therefore, synthesis of novel short fluorocarbon chain (≤ C4) surfactants has become a very important way to solve this problem. A novel fluorocarbon surfactant based on perfluorobutyl had been synthesized and its chemical structure had been confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 19F NMR measurements in this work. Since the fluorocarbon surfactant mixed with appropriate hydrocarbon surfactant can reduce its dosage and cutting production costs, the surface tension and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the synthesized fluorocarbon surfactant and its equimolar mixtures with CH3(CH2)5NaO3S had been studied. The results show that CMC and the surface tension at CMC (γCMC) of the pure surfactant were 21.68 mmol/L and 17.08 mN/m, while the minimum surface tension and CMC could reach to 16.58 mN/m and 7.72 mmol/L for the mixed system, respectively. In addition, the foamability, spreadability and extinguishing performance of the equimolar mixed system has also been investigated. The foam expansion and the 25% drainage time are 9.8 and 313 s, respectively, and the extinguishing times are less than 65 s while the burnback times are more than 14.50 min for all the hydrocarbon oils studied in this work, indicating a great application prospect in AFFF.

Abstract:The detection of the highly toxic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, PFAS, constitutes a challenging task in terms of developing a generic method that could be rapid and applicable simultaneously to both long and short-chain PFAS at ppt concentration level. In the present study, the method introduced by the USA Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, to detect surfactants, using methylene blue, MB, which is identified an ideal candidate for PFAS-MB ion pairing, is extended at the lowest concentration range by a simple additional step that involves the dissociation of the ion pairs in water. In this work, Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering, SERS, is applied via Ag nanocolloidal suspensions to probe MB and indirectly either/or both short-chain (perfluorobutyric acid, PFBA) and long-chain (perfluoloctanoic acid, PFOA) PFAS downt to 5 ppt. This method, which can be further optimized to sub-ppt level via a custom-made SERS-PFAS dedicated Raman system, offers the possibility to be applied to either specific PFAS (both short and long-chain) in a targeted analysis or to total PFAS in a non-targeted analysis at very low detection limits, following any type of MB detection method in aqueous solutions and obviously with any type of SERS substrate.
