Abstract:Metamorphic xenoliths within the Nushan alkali basalt of northeastern Anhui (NEA), China, are from the middle-lower crust. They could be divided into two end-members: basic and acid. Intermediate xenoliths are scarcely found. Basic two-pyroxene granulites (pyriclasites) were formed at 720–810° C and 7–8 kb. Petrological and geochemical studies indicate that the primary magma of the protoliths of basic granulites was derived from the metasomatized upper mantle, while the parental magma of the acid end-member was probably produced by partial melting of the basic rocks. The protoliths of charnockites and grey gneisses represent respectively the early and late crystallization products of the granitic magma. The Nushan granulites are much different in many aspects from the granulites exposed in the northern part of North China, which implies the inhomogeneity regarding to the early evolution of the North China terrane.

Abstract:The main mineral assemblage of granulite xenolith in Nushan basalt is Opx+Cpx+Pl. The granulite xenoliths are commonly in banded structure, with fine-grained homeblastic texture or heteroblastic texture. The chemical compositions of orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene in Nushan granulite xenoliths are very similar to those of North China Archean granulite terrain, while are distinctively different from those of Hannuoba grnaulite xenolith. Based on the test of the garnet-bearing granulite in the world, the authors confirm that the combination of the Wells (1977) geothermometer and the McCarthy & Pati no Douce (1998) geobarometer is suitable for application to the granulite. The equilibrium T-P of Nashan granulite xenolith vary in 809 similar to 899 degreesC and 0.60 similar to 0.95 GPa, respectively. The lower crustal geotherm of Nushan based on the equilibrium T-P of Nushan granulite xenoliths is very similar to the extrapolated upper part of Xu's geotherm (1998) based on the garnet-bearing mantle-derived xenoliths. The petrological Moho depth based on the Nashan geotherm is ca 31 km consistent with the seismic Moho depth, which shows that there is no obvious crust-mantle transition zone in the area. The absence of strong underplating and the mineralogical characteristics of the granulite xenoliths imply that the Nushan granulite xenoliths should be the source from the basement of the North-China craton.

Abstract:Granitoids (175–80Ma) representing a prominent Yanshanian (Jurassic to Cretaceous) magmatic event in South China widely intrude the Precambrian crystalline basement and Paleozoic strata. Here we report zircon U–Pb age data, geochemical characteristics and Sr–Nd isotopes of the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous granitoids from the northwestern Zhejiang Province (ZXB) of southeastern China. Our results reveal two distinct episodes for the Yanshanian magmatism. The Jiemeng and Datongkeng granodiorites formed at 148.6±1.1Ma, whereas the Huangshitan, Jiuligang and Ruhong aluminous A-type granites were generated between 129.0±0.6Ma and 126.1±1.1Ma. The two magmatic phases represent a tectonic transition from an active continental margin to post-orogenic setting during the Late Jurassic (ca. 150Ma) to Early Cretaceous (ca. 128Ma). Geochemically, these intrusions are granodioritic to granitic in composition and show an affinity of S-type and A-type granitoids, respectively. The S-type granodiorites of Jiemeng and Datongkeng are characterized by moderate SiO2 (65.0–69.6wt.%), high K2O+Na2O (5.0–7.6wt.%), K2O/Na2O (1.2–1.5), Zr (31–109ppm), Sr (71–190ppm) and high field strength elements, low to intermediate Mg#, and moderate Nb depletion. The A-type granites of Huangshitan, Jiuligang and Ruhong are characterized by high SiO2 (72.7–77.2wt.%), K2O+Na2O (6.9–8.8wt.%), K2O/Na2O (1.3–2.1), FeT/(FeT+Mg), Ga (17–29ppm, >20ppm commonly), Zr (96–197ppm) and Sr (8–45ppm) with slight Nb depletion. The S-type granodiorites have higher Mg#, A/NK, Sr, Sr/Ba, Sr/Y, (La/Yb)N, and LREE/HREE, and lower SiO2, K2O+Na2O, Ga and Zr with weak negative Eu anomalies compared to those of the A-type granites with negative Eu anomalies. All these rocks show Y/Nb ratios >1.2, high initial 87Sr/86Sr (ISr) ratios and low εNd(t), and are depleted in Nb, Ti and Sr, indicating crustal origin with subduction zone signatures. We suggested that the ZXB S-type granitic bodies might have been derived from the Mesoproterozoic metamorphic basement rocks through partial melting induced by mantle-derived magma, followed by limited fractional crystallization. The ZXB aluminous A-type granites were also derived from a similar magma source but underwent fractional crystallization at higher crustal levels. The A-type granites in the ZXB correlate with a post-orogenic tectonic setting. A geological comparison between ZXB and adjacent areas indicates that the geochemical features of the ZXB A-type granites are comparable with the Baijuhuajian A-type granites and also the adjacent areas A-type granites, but are distinct from the Late Cretaceous A-type granites (105-90Ma) distributed along the southeastern coastal area of South China. We correlate the formation of the ZXB S-type granodiorites to inland compression associated with the subduction and collision of the paleo-Pacific plate in the Late Jurassic (170–145Ma). In contrast, the A-type granites formed under a post-orogenic setting during the Early Cretaceous period (145–120Ma) resulting from lithospheric thinning and continent extension accompanied by slab roll-back of the paleo-Pacific plate following the subduction–collision event.
Petrogenesis of the Granites in the Yandangshan Area, Southeastern China: Constraints from SHRIMP U-Pb Zircon Age and Trace Elements, and Sr-Nd-Hf Isotopic Data

Abstract:New geochemical and geochronological data of two types of granites, which are located in Yandangshan area, southeastern Zhejiang Province, were presented to constrain their magma condition, origin and the genetic relationship between them. The SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating of Dongshan and He-sheng granite in Yandangshan area shows that they were formed at 114±1 and 103±2 Ma, respectively. Samples from the Dongshan granite have high SiO2 (76.4 wt.%–76.9 wt.%) and total alkaline (K2O+Na2O=8.35 wt.%–8.47 wt.%) contents, but low FeOT (0.89 wt.%–1.15 wt.%), MgO (0.21 wt.%–0.22 wt.%), and CaO (0.24 wt.%–0.34 wt.%) contents and high A/CNK (∼1.1) values, belonging to the peraluminous and magnesian granite. The Hesheng granite has high SiO2 (72.2 wt.%–77.5 wt.%), total alkaline (K2O+Na2O=8.05 wt.%–9.41 wt.%) and FeOT contents (1.20–2.06), and high A/CNK values (1.0–1.1), but low in MgO (0.12 wt.%–0.29 wt.%) and CaO (0.24 wt.%–0.34 wt.%) contents. Samples from the Hesheng granite also have high FeOT/MgO (6.9–10.0) and 10 000×Ga/Al (2.6–3.4) ratios similar to the ferroan/A-type granite. All the samples are enriched in LREE but have produced negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*Dongshan=0.45–0.47; Eu/Eu*Hesheng=0.17–0.55), Ba, Nb, and Ta, while the REE contents of the ferroan/A-type granite (Hesheng) are higher than that of the magnesian granite (Dongshan). The (87Sr/86Sr)i value of the magnesian granite is slightly higher than that of the ferroan/A-type granite and its εNd(t) value (−6.8) is lower than the latter (−6.0–−5.9). In addition, the εHf(t) value (−11.8–−4.2) of magnesian granite is also lower than that of the ferroan/A-type granite (−8.3–−2.0), indicating that there may be more mantle-derived components in the source area of the ferroan/A-type granite. Zircon saturation thermometer (TZr) and Ti-in-zircon thermometer (TZircon) are used to estimate the temperature of the magma source, and the results show that the magma temperature of the magnesian granite (average TZr=798 °C; average TZircon=792 °C) is lower than that of the ferroan/A-type granite (average TZr=862 °C; average TZircon=859 °C). And the oxygen fugacity of magnesian granite (ΔFMQ=1.16–3.47) are also higher than those of the ferroan/A-type granite (ΔFMQ= −0.41–1.14). Our new data indicate that both granites in this study are derived from a mixed source that consists of mantle-derived and crust-derived material. Based on the previous studies, both of the granitic plutons were formed under extension setting, and the granites transformed from magnesian to ferroan in the study area may indicate the extension was enhanced, which may be caused by the roll-back or delamination of the Paleo-Pacific oceanic slab.
The nature of the Cenozoic lithosphere at Nushan, eastern China

Abstract:The Cenozoic geotherm at Nushan, eastern China, constrained by 19 garnet-bearing lherzolites and pyroxenites from 52-72 km, and by a composite xenolith at shallow depth, is similar to the southeastern Australia geotherm, and distinct from the higher and more strongly inflected geotherm from Qilin, southeast China. The abundant garnet-bearing xenoliths (including composite xenoliths) also have allowed the definition of the most appropriate geothermobarometry methods. Reference of equilibration temperatures for granulite and spinel Iherzolite xenoliths to the Nushan geotherm defines the crust-mantle boundary and the depth range of the spinel-garnet Iherzolite transition. Granitic gneiss xenoliths in the Nushan basaltic rocks were derived from the middle-upper crust. Granulite xenoliths are samples of lower crust from 25-30 km depth, with equilibration temperatures ranging from 820 degrees C to 870 degrees C. Both petrological and geophysical data show the crust/mantle boundary is ca 30 km deep beneath Nushan. From 30 km to 55-56 km, the mantle is dominated by spinel Iherzolite, and the spinel-garnet Iherzolite transition zone lies from ca 55 km to 65 km. Below ca 65 km, the mantle is dominated by garnet lherzolites. Pyroxenites are scattered through different levels of the lithospheric mantle. The base of the lithosphere, defined by the intersection of the xenolith-derived geotherms and the inferred mantle adiabat, is at about 100 km. This is consistent with geophysical estimates of the depth to the top of the seismic low-velocity zone beneath Nushan. The thermal gradient and thickness of the Cenozoic lithosphere are different from that of the Paleozoic lithosphere beneath this area, as derived from xenolithic material in kimberlites. The major-element and Nd, Sr isotopic compositions of the Nushan peridotites are typical of "oceanic", rather than of Archean lithospheric mantle. These changes are inferred to result from the Tertiary upwelling of the asthenosphere associated with basaltic magmatism.
Water in the Lower Crustal Granulite Xenoliths from Nushan, Eastern China

Abstract:[1] Nominally anhydrous clinopyroxene (cpx), orthopyroxene (opx), and plagioclase (pl) from 10 lower crustal granulite (two-pyroxene granulite and hypersthene granulite) xenoliths in Cenozoic basalts from the Nushan volcano, eastern China, have been analyzed for their hydrogen content by microscopic Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (Micro-FTIR). The results demonstrate that hydrogen was incorporated in all these minerals in the manner of OH and that the content (H2O weight) is up to 2360 ppm for cpx, 1170 ppm for opx, and 880 ppm for pl. On the basis of the water content of constitutive minerals and their proportions, whole rock water contents of the Nushan granulites were estimated to be 150–950 ppm. Estimated equilibrium temperatures of the Nushan granulites are in the range of 810–892°C, corresponding to the lowermost crust at Nushan (about 25–30 km). Therefore this study provides direct evidence that the lower continental crust, even the lowermost part devoid of hydrous minerals, can contain a certain amount of water in nominally anhydrous minerals.
Isotopic Compositions of the Peridotitic Xenoliths from the Nushan Area, Anhui Province: Constraints on the Age of Subcontinental Lithospheric Mantle Beneath the East China

Abstract:Nushan volcano, located in Anhui Province, contains abundant and various mantle-derived peridotitic xenoliths, including spinel lherzolite, garnet lherzolite and spinel-garnet lherzolite, with minor harzburgite. Some spinel lherzolites contain amphibole, phlogopite and apatite, indicating that they had experienced mantle metasomatism. Petrological, mineralogical and geochemical data of the spinel lherzolites and harzbuigites revealed that the former are fertile and the latter are refractory. Depleted Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic characteristics of the spinel lherzolites indicate that they are typical of oceanic peridotites, rather than of Archean lithospheric mantle. Furthermore, most spinal lherzolites have high Os-187/Os-188 ratios. Although the lithospheric mantle beneath the Nushan are has been strongly metasomatismed by fluids/melts, the Os isotopes and PGE (Platinum Group Element) data display that the Os isotopic composition of the Nushan peridotites are not significantly affected by later mantle metasomatism processes. All these geochemical data of most spinel lherzolites indicate that the lithospheric mantle beneath Nushan are young (Phanerozoic) additions to the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) from the convective asthenospheric mantle. However, one harzburgite has relatively lower Os-187/Os-188 ratio of 0.1184 and ancient Re-depletion age of 1.5Ga, suggesting existence of some ancient component in the asthenosphere.
Discovery of a basic granulite and its formation age in Delingha area, North Qaidam monutains

Abstract:The basic granulite from the Delingha area, Northern Qaidam Mts., occurs as lens or vein within feldspathic gneisses. It consists of hypersthene, clinopyroxene, amphibole and plagioclase with minor ilmenite and zircon. Exsolution lamellaes of orthopyroxene and ilmenite within clinopyroxene, which represent exsolution texture under high temperature, can be observed. Using two pyroxene geothermometers of different methods, the temperature of 720~925°C were estimated. The trace element, rare earth element and Sm-Nd isotopic data suggest that the basic granulite have protolith feature drived from continental margin or continental rift. The Sm-Nd isotopic data yield a whole rock-pyroxene-amphibole- plagioclase isochron of 1791 ± 37Ma age which is interpreted as the granulitic facies metamorphic age of the basic granulite. Nd medol ages of the basic granulite and gneiss indicate that there might be some Archean crustal materials, within basement in this area.
Chronological and Geochemical Studies of Granite and Enclave in Baimashan Pluton, Hunan, South China

Abstract:Zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating reveals that the Baimashan Pluton is composed mainly of late Indosinian (204.5±2.8 Ma-209.2±3.8 Ma) biotite granodiorites/monzonitic granites (LIGs) and early Yanshanian (176.7±1.7 Ma) two-micas monzonitic granites (EYGs), and the coeval (203.2±4.5 Ma-205.1±3.9 Ma) mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) are generally found in the former. In addition, the ages of cores within zircons from LIGs and MMEs ranging from 221.4±4.0 Ma to 226.5±4.1Ma provide evidence of multistage magma intrusion during Indosinian in the study area. Measured 3010±20.6 Ma of inherited zircon age suggests that there may be recycling Archaean curstal material in existence in this area. LIGs and EYGs share some similar geochemical features: subalkaline and peraluminous granites, enrichment of Th, U, K, Ta, Zr, Hf and LREE but depletion of Ba, Nb, P, Ti and Eu, low ɛ Nd(t) values but high (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios, and old T 2DM (ca. 1.9–2.0 Ga). The behaviors of incompatible elements and REE are mainly dominated by fractional crystallization of plagioclase, K-feldspar, ilmenite and apatite, but that of Sr isotope mainly controlled by EC-AFC. They are crust-sourced and derived from partial melting of paleo-Proterozoic metagreywackes and related to biotite dehydration melting. LIGs are formed in post-collisional tectonic setting as crustal local extension and thinning during late Indosinian. But EYGs may be evolved products of congeneric granitic magma with LIGs formed in late Indoinian, which were emplaced again when crust underwent extensive thinning and extension in post-orogenic tectonic setting during Yanshanian in SC after undergoing EC-AFC. MMEs should be cognate enclaves and derived from liquid immiscibility of host magma.
Exploration for the lower crustal materials and granite genesis in southeast China

Abstract:A group of gabbroic granulite/gabbro deep-seated xenoliths have been found from Mesozoic-Cenozoic basaltic rocks in southeast China. The gabbroic granulite xenoliths from Qilin Cenozoic basaltic pipe in the coastal area are studied. A comparison study is also made with the gabbro, granitic gneiss xenoliths from Daoxian Mesozoic basaltic pipe. These studies indicate that gabbroic granulite was formed by underplating of basaltic magma at the bottom of the crust, and experienced metamorphism. Underplating is an important process of crust/mantle interaction, and an essential process in the crustal evolution of the continental margin of southeast China. The Sm-Nd isotope dating shows that the crystallization age of underplating material in the continental margin of southeast China is 112.3±17.8Ma. In addition, the extent of underplating in different tectonic area may be different, which depends on the development of basaltic volcanism, wide distribution of crust-mantle type granitoids.
Geochemistry and petrogenesis of the Huashan granites and their implications for the Mesozoic tectonic settings in the Xiaoqinling gold mineralization belt, NW China

Abstract:The Huashan complex granitic batholith, occurred in the core of the Xiaoqinling orogen and gold mineralization belt along the south margin of the North China Craton, consists of amphibole monzogranite and biotite monzogranite in the Wengyu and Fangshanyu valleys, respectively. Zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating yields ages of 205±2Ma and 132±1Ma for the Wengyu and Fangshanyu granites, respectively, which represent the two major episodes of Mesozoic magmatism in the region. These rocks are characterized by metaluminous, high silica and total alkalinity, and have high FeO total/(FeO total+MgO) ratios, high large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs, especially Sr and Ba) and light rare earth elements (LREEs), and low heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) and Y concentrations and insignificant negative Eu anomalies. The Wengyu granites have higher Ba and Sr contents, which can be classified as high Ba-Sr granites, whereas the Fangshanyu granites show much lower Ba and Sr contents and display an adakitic affinity. Elemental and isotopic compositions suggest that the main sources of both the Wengyu and Fangshanyu granites are likely the ancient basement materials of Taihua Group. However, the high Ba and Sr contents of the Wengyu granites require addition of small amounts of enriched lithospheric mantle metasomatised by fluid/melt derived from pelagic sediments-bearing subducted slab in the sources. The Wengyu granites were most likely generated earlier by partial melting of the lowest part of the crust due to the subducted slab break-off under the post-collision extensional stage of the continental collision orogeny. The Fangshanyu granites might be mainly derived later from the partial melting of thickened lower crustal materials, representing by the Taihua Group basement rocks, corresponding to the tectono-magmatism of the post-orogeny to rift extensional environment during the tectonic transition from the Paleo-Tethys subduction-collision system to the Paleo-Pacific regime. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
Petrogenesis of the Paleoproterozoic Guandishan Granitoids in Shanxi Province: Constraints from Geochemistry and Nd Isotopes

Abstract:The Guandishan granitoids consist mainly of various granitoid intrusions with different scales, including the Huijiazhuang intrusion, Shizhuang intrusion and Hengjian intrusion, which were formed between 1906 Ma and 1848 Ma. On the basis of geological and petrological characteristics, these granitoids can be classified into two groups: the earlier gneissic granodiorites and monzogranites, and the later massive leuco-monzogranites. Their geochemical and Nd isotopic features indicate that they could be derived from complicated partial melting of supracrustal rocks with an affinity of continental arc materials, such as sandy shale and pelite, and with garnet, pyroxene, hornblende and plagioclase as residual phases. Biotite, feldspar and other minerals were most likely fractionated during the magma evolution. Their source may have an affinity with continental arcs, and the granitoids could be derived from the main syn-collisional to late-orogenic tectonic environment, which may be related to the final amalgamation between the Eastern and Western continental blocks in the North China Craton.

Abstract:Geochronological, petrological and geochemical studies were performed on the granulite xenoliths from a Late Cretaceous basaltic breccia dike in Junan, Shandong province, eastern China. These xenoliths show close similarities to the Nushan granulite xenoliths from the southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) and the Archean granulite terrains in terms of mineralogy and bulk rock compositions, but are quite different from the Hanuoba mafic granulite xenoliths from the northern NCC. In-situ zircon U–Pb age and Hf isotopic analyses, together with geochemical data reveal that the protolith of these xenoliths was formed around 2.3Ga ago, through assimilation–fractional crystallization of a mafic magma. P–T conditions of these xenoliths suggest that the lower crust beneath the Junan region reaches to a depth of 35km, which agree well with the result deduced from various geophysical methods. The consistent petrological and seismic Moho depths, the observed velocity structure and calculated velocity of these xenoliths imply the absence of underplating induced crust–mantle transition zone, which was well formed in the northern NCC. Compared to 40–50km depth of the lower crust in Early Jurassic, the lower crust beneath Junan extended to a depth of 30km in Late Cretaceous, suggesting that the lower crust of NCC was significantly thinned during Late Mesozoic.

Abstract:Abstract: In this paper we report geochemical and Nd‐Sr isotopic data for a late Archean gneissic granitic pluton (Hengling pluton), an early Paleoproterozoic complex (Xipan complex) and a late Paleoproterozoic granitic pluton (Yunzhongshan granites) from the Lüliang‐Wutai terrain, North China, to trace the source of these late Archean‐Paleoproterozoic granitoids and, particularly, to understand the nature and mechanism of continental growth at that time. The Hengling granitic gneisses (ca. 2.51 Ga) are characterized by high Na2O and LILEs, TTG‐like REE patterns (highly depleted HREE and minor Eu anomalies) and moderately depleted Nd‐Sr isotopic compositions (∍Nd(t) =1.2‐2.7, ISr=0.7015‐0.7019), and were considered as being products of arc magmatism that was developed upon the North China craton. The Xipan complex (ca. 2.2 Ga) contain gabbroic diorite and monzonite, mostly being Na2O‐rich, highly fractionated REE patterns and isotopically enriched (∍Nd(t) =−1.5 to −4.1, ISr=0.7038‐0.706). The gabbroic diorites probably originated from melting of an enriched mantle source, but significantly contaminated by lower crustal material, and the monzonites probably represent a product of a mixture between the gabbroic dioritic magma and granitic melts of crustal origin. The Yunzhongshan post‐collisional granitoids (ca. 1.8 Ga) are characterized by high‐K affinity and highly‐enriched and homogeneous Nd isotopic compositions (∍Nd(t) = −4.9 to −5.7), although they split into two groups in terms of REE patterns: one group showing elevated HREE (and Sc, Y and Zr) with significant negative Eu anomalies and the other showing highly depleted HREE and, to a lesser extent, mid‐REE with negligible Eu anomalies. These granites are genetically related to a process of extensional collapse of a thickened orogen. They formed through magma mixing between mantle‐derived basaltic magmas and crust‐derived granitic melts, followed by significant fractionation of ferromagnesian phases (like hornblende and Cpx) and feldspar and accessory zircons. Some Yunzhongshan granites show very old Nd model ages (2.9‐3.0 Ga), suggesting the existence of continental crust older than 2.7 Ga, which is supported by our zircon Hf isotopic data for these granites.
The Petrology of Two Distinct Granulite Types in the Hengshan Mts, China, and Tectonic Implications

Abstract:The Archean to Proterozoic Hengshan Complex (North China Craton), comprises tonalitic and granodioritic gneisses with subordinate mafic lenses, pegmatites and granites. Amphibolite facies assemblages predominate, although granulite-facies relics are widespread, and greenschist-facies retrogression occurs in km-wide shear zones. Mafic lenses, locally abundant, occur as strongly deformed amphibolite (hornblende+plagioclase) boudins or sheets. In contrast to previously published models we find two series of mafic rocks with distinctly different granulite-facies evolutions. In the north of the Complex, relict high-pressure mafic granulites are garnet+clinopyroxene-bearing rocks with a secondary development of orthopyroxene around both garnet (kelyphites) and clinopyroxene (coronas). South of the newly defined central, E–W-trending, Zhujiafang shear zone, numerous mafic boudins and less-deformed dykes exhibit a macroscopically visible magmatic texture with coronitic growth of metamorphic garnet (full of quartz inclusions) between the magmatic plagioclase and pyroxene domains. Additional orthopyroxene (after magmatic augite) and sodic rims to magmatic plagioclase clearly indicate medium-pressure granulite-facies metamorphism. These findings suggest tectonic juxtaposition in this area of three different structural levels of the same Proterozoic-imprinted crust: high-pressure granulite grade in the northern Hengshan, medium-pressure granulite grade in the southern Hengshan and amphibolite- to greenschist-facies grade in the Wutaishan to the SE.

Abstract:The Cretaceous Yuhuashan igneous complex contains abundant xenoliths of high-grade metamorphic rocks, with the assemblage garnet +/- hypersthene + biotite + plagioclase + K-feldspar + quartz. The biotite in these samples has high TiO2 (>3.5%), indicating high-T metamorphism (623-778 degrees C). P-T calculations for two felsic granulites indicate that the peak metamorphism took place at 880-887 degrees C and 0.64-0.70 GPa, in the low pressure/high temperature (LP-HT) granulite facies. Phase equilibrium modelling gives equilibrium conditions for the peak assemblage of a felsic granulite of >0.6 GPa and >840 degrees C, consistent with the P-T calculations, and identifies an anticlockwise P-T-t path. LA-ICPMS U-Pb dating of metamorphic and detrital zircon from one xenolith reveals that the granulite facies metamorphism took place at 273.6 +/- 2.2 Ma, and the protolith was a sedimentary rock deposited later than 683 Ma. This represents the first Late Palaeozoic (Variscan) granulite facies event identified in the South China Block (SCB). Coupled with other geological observations, the LP-HT metamorphic conditions and anticlockwise P-T-t path suggest that Variscan metamorphism probably occurred in a post-orogenic or intraplate extensional tectonic setting associated with the input of external heat, related to the underplating of mantle-derived magma. Based on P-T estimates and the comparison of the protolith composition with mid-to low-grade metamorphic rocks in the area, it is suggested that the mid-lower crust under the Xiangshan-Yuhuashan area consists mainly of these felsic granulites and gneisses, whose protoliths were probably subducted to these depths during the Early Palaeozoic orogeny in the SCB, and underwent two episodes of metamorphism during Early Palaeozoic and Late Palaeozoic time.

Abstract:Large amounts of granitoids, including granodiorite, monzogranite and potassium granite which divided into HT potassium granite and HN- potassium granite on the base of where they locate, were emplaced in Liuyuan area, Beishan, Gansu province. The SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating indicates that the emplaced age of granodiorite, monzogranite and HT-potassium granite are 423 +/- 8 Ma, 397 +/- 7 Ma and 436 +/- 9 Ma respectively. Four kinds of granitic rocks all have enriched large ion lithophile elements relative to high field strength elements, enriched light rare earth element relative to heavy rare earth element (HREE), negative anomalies in K, Ni, Ta, P and Ti characteristics, and are metaluminous to peraluminous and high-K post-collisinal granite. In addition, granodiorite has a lack of negative anomalies in Sr and Eu, epsilon(Nd)(t) = -2.5 similar to -0.8, and its magmas resulted from partial melting of subcontinental mantle or admixture between partial melting of subcontinental mantle and partial melting of asthenospheric mantle, and contaminated by juvenile crust including orogenic components. HN-potassium granite, monzogranite and HT-potassium granite all have negative anomalies in Sr and Eu, and epsilon(Nd) (t) = + 1. 4, - 4. 0 similar to - 2. 0 and - 2. 7 similar to - 0. 3 respectely. All the geochemical characteristics indicate the magmas of HT-potassium granite were derived from partial melting of juvenile crust induced by subcontinental mantle. The magmas of HN- potassium granite were from partial melting of asthenospheric mantle, and likely contaminated by juvenile crust. And the magmas of monzogranite were from partial melting of juvenile crust. The four kinds of granitoid rocks are all outcomes of emplaced magmas under the post-collisional tectonic setting and genesis of magmas are likely related to slab break-off.
Geochronology and Petrogenesis of Granitoids and Associated Mafic Enclaves from Xiate in Chinese Southwest Tianshan: Implications for Early Paleozoic Tectonic Evolution

Abstract:Mineral compositions, in-situ zircon U-Pb and Hf isotopes, and whole-rock major-trace elements and Sr-Nd isotopes are reported for the host granitoids and associated mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) in Dongdeguli valley, and the Changawuzi mylonitic pluton, in the Southwest Tianshan, NW China. The Dongdeguli host granitoids have LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb ages of 446 +/- 2 Ma and 443 +/- 3 Ma, which are comparable with those (436 +/- 6 Ma and 446 +/- 23 Ma) of their enclaves. Both the host granitoids and MMEs have relatively high initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios and negative epsilon(Nd)(t) values. The MMEs are enriched in large ion lithophile and light rare earth elements but depleted in high field strength elements, and they are interpreted as melts derived from the fluids/melts metasomatized mantle wedge. The emplacement of mafic arc magma is inferred to cause the partial melting of ancient crust of Yili-Central Tianshan Block, which formed the granitic magma. Magma mixing model is proposed for the origin of the host granitoids and their mafic enclaves in the Dongdeguli valley. The Changawuzi mylonitic pluton has a SHRIMP zircon U-Pb age of 453 +/- 4 Ma. It has relatively low SiO2 content, high MgO content, and negative whole-rock epsilon(Nd)(t) values and zircon epsilon(Hf)(t) values, with two-stage Nd model ages of 1.67-1.7 Ga and two-stage Hf model ages of 1635-1760 Ma, respectively. These results indicate that the Changawuzi mylonitic pluton was derived from partial melting of Paleoproterozoic crustal rocks, with involvement of some mantle-derived magma. The Dongdeguli granitoids,and associated MMEs, and the Changawuzi mylonitic pluton, were formed by the northward subduction of paleo-South Tianshan oceanic crust in the Late Ordovician-Early Silurian period. Abstract:This paper reports new results on the petrology, geochronology and geochemistry of two km-scale high-pressure granulite exposures, namely the Weiya and the Yushugou granulites, that occur in the central and southern Tianshan Paleozoic sub-belts, respectively. Petrological and geochemical results suggest that the Weiya and the Yushugou granulites are different in both the rock types and geological structures. The protolith of the Weiya granulite is basic to intermediate rocks, and that of the Yushugou granulite is basic rocks; the former is distributed as fault-bounded blocks within the Precambrian schist-gneiss, and the latter occurs as thrust slabs in the allochthonous ophiolitic mélange. Observation of deformation structures provides some evidence for two-phase ductile deformation of the Tianshan granulites, characterized by deformed garnet-pyroxene and deformed feldspar-quartz microstructures, corresponding to rheological conditions of the lower crustal level and of the middle crustal level, respectively. The deformation structures also indicate that the Weiya granulite was involved in the late stage retrograde metamorphism forming new amphibole, following a thrusting movement toward the north and ductile deformation of feldspar-quartz grains. The Yushugou granulite underwent strong ductile shearing during the Silurian–Devonian interval. Three stages of metamorphism are recorded by mineral assemblages of the Weiya granulite: M1=Pl+Qtz+Bt, M2=Cpx+Grt+Pl+Qtz+Atp±Opx, and M3=Amp+Ep+Pl+Bt+Qtz, in contrast to a two-stage metamorphic history of the Yushugou granulite: M1=Cpx+Grt+Pl±Hyp, M2=Amp+Pl+Qtz±Bt. The P–T condition estimates suggest that the Weiya granulite was formed between 910–1025 °C and 1.08–1.12 GPa, and underwent retrograde metamorphism at 650–670 °C, while the peak metamorphism of the Yushugou granulite took place between 800–870 °C and 0.88–1.13 GPa. Geochemical characteristics (major, REE and incompatible elements) of the Weiya and Yushugou granulites indicate that their protoliths were formed in a volcanic arc setting, implying that a late Precambrian active continental margin may have existed in the study area. The Sm–Nd isochron dating for the Weiya granulite suggests that the peak metamorphism occurred at 538±24 Ma, which was likely related to the ancient plate subduction. The 40Ar/39Ar dating on amphibole grains separated from the Weiya granulite yielded a plateau age of 432±1 Ma for the retrograde metamorphism, which represents an exhumation age, suggesting a significant early Paleozoic tectonothermal event.
