Abstract:In this work, SiO2-ionic liquid (SiO2-PIL) composites were synthesized from amino groups containing SiO2 particles and imidazolium [C16VIm+] [Br−] (ionic liquid) by the nucleophilic Michael addition reaction and the utilization of the composites for adsorptive removal of anion dyes was also examined in details. The adsorption performance was greatly improved since the presence of ionic liquid, and the practical maximum adsorption capacity of dye can as high as 243.67 mg/g in a very short timeframe. The results of fitting experimental data illustrate the effects of contact time, solution temperature, dye concentration, and pH. The kinetic and isotherm study confirms the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, respectively. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity from Langmuir model can be as high as 2955.99 mg/g. The spontaneity and exothermicity of adsorption process can be also proved by data analysis. The novel method for fabrication of ionic liquid modified composites can be altered for environmental remediation or other practical application fields.

Abstract:The use of magnetic nanomaterials (MNPs) as adsorbents to eliminate pollution causing dyes from water has attracted substantial attention in recent years because they can be easily isolated and reused. In this work, core–shell Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 MNPs in which magnetic Fe 3 O 4 NPs as a core enclosed with a thick SiO 2 shell were successfully synthesized by chemical co–precipitation followed by hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxysilanes in a mixture of ammonia, ethanol and water. The formation of core–shell Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 MNPs has been characterized by TEM, TEM-EDS, XRD, FT-IR and VSM. TEM characterization revealed that several Fe 3 O 4 NPs (around 10 nm) aggregated to form a Fe 3 O 4 magnetic core and surrounded by an uniform SiO 2 shell of 40-50 nm thickness to obtain Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 magnetic core–shell NPs. As synthesized core–shell NPs were employed as adsorbent for elimination of two cationic toxic dyes, crystal violet (CV) and malachite green (MG) from aqueous solutions. Further, different adsorption parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage and contact times of the dyes were found to enhance the adsorption of cationic dyes. At neutral pH 7 the cationic dyes could be speedily removed from aqueous solution with high efficiency. It has been observed that 0.35 g of adsorbent dosage is sufficient for 95% of dye removal efficiency. The contact time is optimised for 20 min for both the dyes. The Langmuir model adsorption isotherm is best suitable which indicates that the cationic dyes adsorption behaviour of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 is a homogeneous monolayer chemisorption process. The adsorptive binding of CV/MG with Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 was directed through electrostatic interactions. Moreover, the magnetic adsorbents could be easily reused and regenerated with almost no adsorption capability is significantly reduced up to 5 cycles. So, the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 is an efficient and reusable adsorbent for rapid and removal of cationic dyes from the aqueous solution.

Abstract:Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell structured nanoparticles are promising candidates for adsorption of heavy metal ions from waste water due to their high adsorption capacities and feasible recycling process. However, their practical applications have been hindered by the trade-off between the magnetic separation efficiency and durability. In this study, we demonstrate the preparation of amino-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 absorbents with both high magnetic separation efficiencies and durability in strong acidic environment. Our key strategy was to use a thin but highly protective silica layer by manipulating the sol-gel chemistry. With the protection of a thin but poorly permeable silica shell, the durability of the Fe3O4 in strong acid solution was significantly enhanced while its magnetic separation efficiency was maintained. We also demonstrated the adsorption of Cu2+ from aqueous solution corresponded well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption capacity can be further improved by coating an additional layer of mesoporous SiO2 outside Fe3O4@SiO2. The design of highly durable magnetic absorbents without sacrificing the magnetic separation efficiency greatly facilitates the practical applications of magnetic nanoparticles in adsorption of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Magnetic core-shell Fe3O4@nSiO(2)@mSiO(2) nanoparticles were first synthesized with P123 as template in acid condition, which possess high BET surface area (839 m(2) g(-1)) and large pore volume (0.9 cm(3) g(-1)). Then Fe3O4@nSiO(2)@mSiO(2) nanoparticles were used as hard templates to synthesize Fe3O4@mesoporous carbon (Fe3O4@mC) with large surface area (971 m(2) g(-1)) and pore volume (1.4 cm(3) g(-1)). The high surface area and mesoporous structure of Fe3O4@mC favor its efficient adsorption of Rhodamine B in aqueous solution, which exhibited higher adsorption capacity of 198.9 mg g(-1) within 30 min than the previous reports on magnetic mesoporous graphitic carbon and magnetic mesoporous resin. The superparamagnetic property of Fe3O4@mC made it easily separated by an external magnetic field and reused after ethanol extraction. The rapid and efficient adsorption of dye together with their ease in separation and regeneration suggests that Fe3O4@mC composites have great potential applications in environmental abatements. Abstract:Amino-functionalized nanocomposites with a magnetic CoFe2O4 core and an amorphous SiO2 shell have been designed and synthesized. The core-shell structure was characterized by SEM, EDS, TEM, FTIR and XPS. CoFe2O4@SiO2-NH2 with a high saturated magnetization (28.09 emu g(-1)) can be easily separated under a moderate external magnetic field within one minute. In addition, the adsorption capacity of the CoFe2O4@SiO2-NH2 for Cu(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II) was 170.829, 144.948 and 110.803 mg g(-1), respectively. The removal efficiency was increased from 12 to 85% with an increase in the pH from 4 to 6.5. The adsorbent can be recycled for at least four cycles with a feasible removal efficiency (85.41%). The adsorption process was fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetics and a Langmuir isotherm model. Based on the data of the present investigation, CoFe2O4@SiO2-NH2 could find potential applications in heavy metal ion wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Exploiting a high-efficiency and environmental-protection absorbent to catch organic dyes from aqueous solution is a practical exploration to carry out the vision of Green and Sustainable Development. In this paper, we studied a functionalized porous magnetic cellulose-based ionic liquid adsorbent (FSIL@CP) to rapidly and vastly uptake anionic dyes. The FSIL@CP composites consisted of two parts, namely synthesis of Fe3O4 nanoparticles grafted by imidazole ionic liquid and subsequent formation of porous magnetic cellulose microspheres modified by amino-rich polyethyleneimine. The structure of FSIL@CP was characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, BET, TGA, VSM and FTIR. The adsorption performances of the FSIL@CP towards anionic dyes were evaluated via the experiments of various influence factors, adsorption kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamics. The maximun adsorption capacities for Congo red (CR) and Methyl blue (MB) reached 1299.3 and 1068.1 mg g−1, respectively, which is better than other similar adsorbents reported in the literature. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm models were well-fitted to pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm, and the adsorption process followed multiple-stage intraparticle diffusion with spontaneous feature. The adsorbent can be rapidly and easily separated from aqueous solution under external magnetic field. The regeneration performance of the adsorbent is excellent and could be repeatedly used. From the results, the FSIL@CP adsorbent offers an effective, inexpensive and reusable/sustainable system for removal and remediation of anionic dyes such as CR and MB in dye wastewater.

Abstract:In order to deal with the increasingly serious water pollution caused by dye wastewater, a novel sulfonic acid-modified polyacrylamide magnetic composite (Fe3O4@SiO2/P(AM-AMPS)) was facilely prepared by crosslink reaction. The physicochemical properties and adsorption performances of Fe3O4@SiO2/P(AM-AMPS) were systematically studied by different characterization techniques and a series of batch experiments, respectively. It was found that the adsorption capacities of Fe3O4@SiO2/P(AM-AMPS) towards cationic dyes crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB) were largely enhanced than those of silica-coated Fe3O4(Fe3O4@SiO2) and maintained at relatively high levels in a wide pH range, due to the three-dimensional network structure and abundant functional groups of modified polyacrylamide. Besides, owing to the introduction of Fe3O4@SiO2, Fe3O4@SiO2/P(AM-AMPS) presented a unique magnetic property that helped it to be rapidly separated from water in a magnetic field. The maximum adsorption capacities of Fe3O4@SiO2/P(AM-AMPS) were 2106.37 mg g(-1) for CV removal and 1462.34 mg g(-1) for MB removal at 298.15 K, much higher than those of other reported magnetic composites. Furthermore, Fe3O4@SiO2/P (AM-AMPS) was effectively regenerated with HCI solution and the regeneration rates were higher than 97% and 80% for CV and MB removal after five adsorption-desorption cycles, respectively. With its excellent adsorption capacity, wide pH applicability, high separation speed, and satisfactory regeneration ability, Fe3O4@SiO2/P(AM-AMPS) was expected to become a promising adsorbent in the purification of cationic dye wastewater. Abstract:Abstract A core/shell structured γ-Fe2O3@Ti-tmSiO2 nanocomposite with enhanced activity for the degradation of dyes that is capable of fast magnetic separation has been successfully prepared by a sol–gel process followed with calcination. The obtained core/shell structure is composed of a superparamagnetic core with a strong response to external fields, and an outer layer of porous titanium silicate with a tunable porous sizes. The convenient control over the pore size and the thickness of porous silica containing titanium species may make it possible to adsorb and catalyze molecules with different sizes. The presence of porous SiO2 helps to enhance the chemical and thermal stability of γ-Fe2O3 core. It is demonstrated that the core γ-Fe2O3 as a Fenton-like catalyst exhibits good performance, while the Ti4+ existing in the porous shell also gives obvious activity in the degradation of dyes. The composite γ-Fe2O3@Ti-tmSiO2 possesses enhanced activity for the treatment of pollutants in water.

Abstract:Uniform core–shell Fe3O4@C@polyaniline (PANi) composite microspheres have been prepared via simple in situ polymerization in the absence of surfactants. In this case, the carbon intermediate layer plays an important role in the formation of trilaminar core–shell structure. By simply adjusting the molar ratio of aniline to Fe3O4, the thickness of the polymer shell can be tuned from about 27 to 62nm. The obtained Fe3O4@C@PANi trilaminar core–shell composite microspheres are used as magnetic adsorbent for the removal of methyl orange (MO) dye from aqueous solution, exhibiting an excellent adsorption capability of 120.2mgg−1 for MO and retaining about 81% of the removal efficiency after five adsorption–desorption cycles. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics are well described by the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models respectively. The Fe3O4@C@PANi composite microspheres could be a good candidate in the waste water treatment for the removal of organic dyes.

Abstract:As organic dyes are a major group of water pollutants, the development of materials for removal of dyes is of great significance for the environment. Here we report a kind of magnetic metal-organic framework (MOF) for the adsorption of different kinds of anionic and cationic dyes. Magnetic NH2-MIL-101(Al) was synthesized and characterized with Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), physical property measurement system (PPMS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), a transmission electron microscope (TEM), a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements. Adsorption isotherms and thermodynamic studies indicated that the maximum adsorption capacities of malachite green (MG) and indigo carmine (IC) were 274.4 and 135 mg g(-1), respectively. The mechanisms of interaction such as electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, pi-pi stacking interaction, and hydrophobic interaction are discussed for the adsorption of cationic and anionic dyes onto magnetic NH2-MIL-101(Al). Also, magnetic separation in this method shortened separation time, and the magnetic material can be reused at least five times without obvious decrease in the removal efficiency. Moreover, the synthesis of the magnetic NH2-MIL-101(Al) is easy to control and the good solvent stability makes this material promising as a novel adsorbent for the adsorption and removal of dyes from aqueous solution.

Selective and Efficient Adsorption of Anionic Dyes by Core/shell Magnetic MWCNTs Nano-Hybrid Constructed Through Facial Polydopamine Tailored Graft Polymerization: Insight of Adsorption Mechanism, Kinetic, Isotherm and Thermodynamic Study

Abstract:It is a big challenge to design advanced adsorbents that have high adsorption capacity and excellent selectivity to efficiently remove organic dyes from complex environmental systems. Herein, by utilizing the adhesion property of polydopamine (PDA) and its crosslinking reaction with polyethyleneimine (PEI), a novel core/shell magnetic MWCNTs/Fe3O4@(PDA PEI) nano-hybrid that carries superior adsorption performance of dyes was constructed through facile polydopamine tailored graft polymerization. In such hierarchical structure, the inner shell of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and outer shell of (PDA + PEI) contributed to the abundant active adsorption sites, large specific surface area (126 m(2)/g) and high saturation magnetization value (10.91 emu/g). As a result, the prepared adsorbent exhibited highly selective adsorption performance toward multiple anionic dyes, including MB, CR, and MO with maximum adsorption capacity of 1449, 1006, and 935 mg/g at 298.15 K, respectively. It was found that the main adsorption mechanism was attributed to the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction. The kinetics data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model, and both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models presented well fit to the isotherm data. The investigation of thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption of anionic dyes onto core/shell magnetic MWCNTs/Fe3O4@(PDA + PEI) nano-hybrid was spontaneous and endothermic. More importantly, the adsorbent presented excellent regeneration property after multiple adsorption-desorption cycles and prominent stability in harsh environments, especially in the alkaline condition. Therefore, these results revealed the promising applications of hierarchical MWCNTs/Fe3O4@ (PDA - PEI) nano-hybrid in water remediation. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The magnetic Fe3O4/C core-shell nanoparticles have been synthesized by a simple strategy and used as adsorbents for removal of organic dyes from aqueous solution. The resulting products are characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). Adsorption performances of the nanomaterial adsorbents are tested with removal of methylene blue (MB) and cresol red (CR) from aqueous solution. The effects of solution pH value, adsorption time and capacity of the nanocomposites have been fully investigated. The results reveal that the nanospheres can be easily manipulated by an external magnetic field with high separation efficiency. In addition, the process is clean and safe for purifying water pollution. The prepared Fe3O4/C complex nanomaterials could thus be used as promising adsorbents for the remove organic dyes, especially, cationic dye, from polluted water. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The evolution of highly efficient adsorbents has received attention around the world due to the importance of removing pollution from water. In the current work, a new and stable silica/coordination polymer nanoporous composite was prepared via the layer-by-layer method and characterized with various physicochemical methods. Aminopropyl-functionalized SiO 2 was consecutively coated with Ni 2+ and glutaric acid (GA) in 10 steps to prepare SiO 2 /Ni-GA. The removal efficiency of SiO 2 -based nanoporous composite towards cationic and anionic dyes was considered at room temperature. The results showed that SiO 2 /Ni-GA is a good adsorbent for all selected dyes (Congo red, CR; methyl orange, MO; and malachite green, MG). However, CR with higher removal efficiency (94%) was selected for further investigations. The high removal efficiency of SiO 2 /Ni-GA towards CR is related to hydrogen bonding and relatively good surface area. The adsorption process was well fitted with the second-order kinetic model and the recovered adsorbent was shown to be reusable for three consecutive cycles.

Abstract:A series of magnetic mesoporous FeNi/graphitic carbon nanocomposites have been synthesized through a simple nanocasting method using mesoporous silica SBA-15 as the template. Metal nitrates and natural soybean oil are respectively used as the magnetic particle precursors and carbon source, which can be infiltrated into the silica template after impregnation, grinding mix and heat treatment. X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption–desorption, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating-sample magnetometry and thermogravimetric analysis techniques are used to characterize the samples. It is observed that high content of magnetic FeNi alloy nanocrystals with the sizes of about 3–6nm are well homodispersed into the walls of graphitic mesoporous carbon matrix, and the resulting nanocomposites have a uniform mesostructure with a high specific surface area, large pore volume, and high saturation magnetization. Because of these characteristics, the obtained magnetic mesoporous FeNi/graphitic carbon nanocomposites can be used as efficient and recycled adsorbents in the removal of dye from wastewater.

Abstract:Magnetic composites have been widely used in the area of wastewater treatment, which own the properties of simple and quick adsorption and separation functions. This article presented a cost-effective and chemically modified adsorbent (Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan) based on a novel facile light-assisted technique for methyl orange (MO) removal. The characterization results of FT-IR, TEM, XRD and the hysteresis loop showed that Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan was successfully prepared. The adsorption properties of the magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan composite had been discussed in detail. Results show that the magnetic composite was able to remove more than 99.15% of dyes in water under optimized conditions. The Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan composite was stable and easily recovered, which demonstrated that the Fe3O4@SiO2@Chitosan can be successfully used as a reusable absorbent for effective removal of methyl orange from wastewater.

Abstract:Publication date: 22 June 2021 Source: Materials Science Forum Vol. 1035 Author(s): Bei Gang Li, Wen Jie Lin Magnetic sodium alginate (SA)-based biosorbent Fe3O4@SA-Ca gel beads were synthesized by droplet polymerization using Ca2+ ions as crosslinking agent, and characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Fe3O4@SA-Ca polymer was used for the removal of Direct Orange 26 (DO-26) dye from water. The ratio of raw materials and some important conditions affecting the adsorbent performance were carefully examined. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics were investigated. When the concentrations of SA, CaCl2 and Fe3O4 solutions were 1.9, 10 and 10 g/L, respectively, the black Fe3O4@SA-Ca gel beads with about 3 mm diameter were successfully prepared by curing 6h at room temperature. The polymer gel exhibits ultra-high adsorption capacity of 1252 mg/g and removal efficiency of 96.2 % for DO-26 under the conditions of 0.05 g polymer dosage, 2600 mg/L of dye initial concentration, solution pH 2.0 and 90 min of the adsorption time at 298 K. The dye removal efficiency can be all over 92 % in a wide pH range of 2.0 to 10.0. The adsorption process completely accorded with the pseudo-second-order rate model at different temperatures (298 ~ 328 K). The dye adsorption behavior was well in line with Freundlich model. The thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption reaction was of spontaneous and exothermic nature. SEM analysis showed that the Fe3O4@SA-Ca gel beads appeared uneven surface with irregular folds and grooves. A high-cost-effective magnetic biosorbent, Fe3O4@SA-Ca can super effectively remove direct dyes from high-concentration wastewater in a wide range of acidity, and can be easily separated and recovered from water after adsorption without secondary pollution, and would have a good application prospect.
