Abstract:In this work we give a theoretical investigation on the near-field heat transfer between two graphene-hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructures. We found that the phonon-plasmon hybrid modes supported by the heterostructure could broaden the frequency and wavevector ranges for near-field photon transfer and lead to a rather high near-field heat transfer efficiency that is far stronger than the usual Planckian radiation by several orders. The tunability of the Fermi level of graphene provides an advantage to actively mediate or control the heat transfer process, which may find important applications such as thermal management or thermal modulation.

Abstract:Graphene-covered hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) can exceed blackbody thermal radiation in near-field due to the coupling of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPPs). As previous research found that the thickness of hBN in a graphene-hBN cell can be very thin while still presenting strong radiation enhancement, multilayer graphene-hBN heterostructures are proposed in this paper to further enhance the near-field thermal radiation. We found that a heterostructure consisting of five or more graphene-hBN cells performs better than all existing graphene-hBN configurations, and the infinite cell limit exhibits 1.87- and 2.94-fold larger heat flux at 10 nm separation than sandwich and monocell structures do, respectively, due to the continuously and perfectly coupled modes. The heat flux is found to be 4 orders of magnitude larger than that of the blackbody. The effective tunability of the thermal radiation of the multicell structure is also observed by adjusting the chemical potentials of graphene with an optimized thickness of 20 nm on each hBN, which is instructive for both experimental design and fabrication of thermal radiation devices.

Abstract:The black phosphorus (BP)/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) Van der Waals heterostructure has great potential application in BP-based devices due to its higher stability than monolayer BP film. The near-field thermal radiation (NFTR) between two identical BP/hBN heterostructures with high electron density is studied to promote the application of BP-based devices. The BP/hBN heterostructures show a higher heat transfer coefficient (HTC) at a 10 nm gap distance compared to BP films with electron density n larger than 1 x 10(13) cm(-2), due to the coupling of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPPs). Especially at n >= 3 x 10(13) cm(-2), the improvement is more than 100%. The SPPs and the HPPs couple into surface plasmon-phonon polaritons (SPPPs) out of the hyperbolic region and hyperbolic plasmon-phonon polaritons (HPPPs) inside. The SPPPs can achieve photon tunneling in the broader wavevector region than SPPs, making most of the contribution to heat transfer. The influences of the thickness of the hBN sheet and gap distance are also discussed. This scheme only effectively enhances NFTR for BP with high electron density at small nanogaps. After structural optimization, h = 2 nm is the optimal thickness for BP/hBN configuration with low electron density, such as n = 1 x 10(13) cm(-2). In contrast, large thickness h = 500 nm is optimal for BP with high electron density. At high electron density, a thick hBN sheet is prominent in enhancing the SPPPs in the frequencies below the type-I region and the HPPPs inside the type-II region. We further propose BP/hBN/BP heterostructures and find that HTC is further enhanced by 4.4% similar to 30.8% due to the more robust surface modes. Our work may contribute to developing BP-based near-field thermal devices and promote understanding the NFTR mechanism of BP/hBN heterostructure.
Near-Interface Defects in Graphene/H-BN In-Plane Heterostructures: Insights into the Interfacial Thermal Transport

Abstract:Based on nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) and nonequilibrium Green’s function simulations, the interfacial thermal conductance (ITC) of graphene/h-BN in-plane heterostructures with near-interface defects (monovacancy defects, 585 and f5f7 double-vacancy defects) is studied. Compared to pristine graphene/h-BN, all near-interface defects reduce the ITC of graphene/h-BN. However, differences in defective structures and the wrinkles induced by the defects cause significant discrepancies in heat transfer for defective graphene/h-BN. The stronger phonon scattering and phonon localization caused by the wider cross-section in defects and the larger wrinkles result in the double-vacancy defects having stronger energy hindrance effects than the monovacancy defects. In addition, the approximate cross-sections and wrinkles induced by the 585 and f5f7 double-vacancy defects provide approximate heat hindrance capability. The phonon transmission and vibrational density of states (VDOS) further confirm the above results. The double-vacancy defects in the near-interface region have lower low-frequency phonon transmission and VDOS values than the monovacancy defects, while the 585 and f5f7 double-vacancy defects have similar low-frequency phonon transmission and VDOS values at the near-interface region. This study provides physical insight into the thermal transport mechanisms in graphene/h-BN in-plane heterostructures with near-interface defects and provides design guidelines for related devices.

Abstract:Plasmon polaritons in graphene can enhance near-field heat transfer. In this work, we give a complete parametric analysis on the near-field heat transfer between two graphene monolayers that allows transfer efficiencies several orders-of-magnitude larger than blackbody radiation. Influences of major parameters are conclusively clarified from the changes of the interlayer supermode coupling and their dispersion relations. The method to maximize the near-field heat flux is discussed. The generalized Stefan-Boltzmann formula is proposed to describe the near-field heat transfer dominated by evanescent wave tunneling. Abstract:Near-field radiative heat transfer between closely placed objects may exceed the far-field black-body radiation limit by orders of magnitude, especially between polaritonic materials. Great efforts have been made to experimentally measure this fundamental effect in various systems. In this work, we manage to experimentally characterize the near-field thermal emission between less explored plasmon-phonon hybrid material systems made of a graphene-$\mathrm{Si}\mathrm{C}$ heterostructure. The experiment is carried out using a custom-designed all-optical measurement setup. A heat flux enhancement factor of 26 over the black-body radiation limit is obtained at a 150-nm vacuum gap. Three fundamental modes, i.e., surface plasmon and phonon polaritons with frustrated modes, are identified to contribute the near-field heat flux in this hybrid system. The measured results are well reproduced from the analytical calculations, indicating the robustness of the measurement. Deeper experimental explorations for near-field heat transfer between more complicated material systems could be encouraged in the future.
Measurement of the Near-Field Super-Planckian Heat Transfer Between the Graphene-Silicon Heterostructures

Abstract:The tunneling contribution of evanescent waves carrying high density of state of photons can substantially strengthen the near-field Planckian thermal radiation with efficiency far beyond the classic blackbody limit. In this aspect, the monolayer graphene (Gr) has the special potential due to its strong surface plasmonic response in the thermal infrared window. In this work, we manage to characterize the near-field heat transfer between two macroscopic Gr-sheets seated on different silicon substrates at nanoscale gaps and unambiguously verify the role of Gr-plasmons in enhancing the thermal radiation. This effect is firstly demonstrated using an intrinsic silicon (i-Si) substrate without doping so that the plasmonic contribution of graphene is solely inspected. A large super-Planckian heat transfer efficiency 8 times larger than the blackbody limit is obtained at a gap size of 435 nm at a temperature difference of 35 K. Highly doped silicon (d-Si) substrate with plasmonic response in the long wavelength range is then used, which alone can give rise to a large near-field heat flux. When covered with a Gr-sheet, the electromagnetic (EM) coupling between the two alien plasmonic materials can further enhance the Gr-Si radiation efficiency with an increment about 11%. The underlying charging doping arising from the Gr-Si heterojunction and their electromagnetic influence are investigated. The experimental results are in good agreement with the analytical calculations incorporating the measurement uncertainties, which in turn validates the classic fluctuating electrodynamics theory used in describing the graphene-involved near-field heat transfer system.

Defects in Graphene/h-BN Planar Heterostructures: Insights into the Interfacial Thermal Transport Properties

Abstract:In this work, the defects (local stress generated) induce the formation of graphene/h-BN planar heterostructure (Gr-hBN-PH) to form "unsteady structure". Then, the coupling effects of external field (heat flow direction, strain and temperature field) and internal field (defect number, geometry shape and interfacial configuration) on the interface thermal conductivity (ITC) of Gr-hBN-PH were studied. The results show phonon transmission is less affected by compression deformation under the action of force-heat-defect coupling, while phonon transmission of heterostructure is more affected by tensile deformation. The non-harmonic interaction of the atoms in the composite system is strengthened, causing the softening of high-frequency phonons. The greater reduction of thermal transport at the interface of heterostructures will be. The interface bonding morphology plays a significant role on the ITC of the Gr-hBN-PH. The relationship between structure and properties in the low dimension is analyzed from the perspective of defect energy. It is helpful for us to understand the physical mechanism of low-dimensional structure, realize multiple structural forms, and even explore new uses.

Topological Defects at the Graphene/h-BN Interface Abnormally Enhance Its Thermal Conductance

Abstract:Low thermal conductance across interface is often the limiting factor in managing heat in many advanced device applications. The most commonly used approach to enhance the thermal conductance is to reduce/eliminate the interfacial structural defects. Using a graphene/h-BN (Gr/h-BN) interface, we show surprisingly that topological defects are able to enhance the thermal conductance across the interface. It is found that the phonon transmission across the Gr/h-BN interface with 5|7 defects is higher than that of the pristine interface, which is in strong contrast to the common notion that interface defects promote phonon scattering. By analyzing the strain distribution and phonon vibrational spectra, we find that this abnormal enhancement in interfacial thermal conductance originates from the localization of the stress fields arising from misfit dislocations and their out-of-plane deformations at the interface. In the presence of the defects, the overall mismatch strain is reduced. In addition, the out-of-plane deformations screen the long-ranged dislocation strain fields, resulting in the stress fields to be localized only at the cores of the defects. This abnormal mechanism provides a new dimension to enhance the interfacial thermal conductance in two-dimensional heterostructures.

Abstract:A graphene-assisted hBN/SiO2 hybrid structure is proposed and demonstrated to enhance near-field thermal radiation (NFTR). Due to the complementarity between the hyperbolic phonon polaritons of hBN and the surface phonon polaritons of SiO2 at mid-infrared frequencies, coupling modes can remarkably improve the photon tunneling probability over a broad frequency band, especially when assisted by the surface plasmon polaritons of graphene sheets. Thus, the heat flux can exceed the blackbody limit by 4 orders of magnitude at a separation distance of 10 nm and reach 97% of the infinite limit of graphene-hBN multilayers using only two layers with a thickness of 20 nm each. The first graphene layer controls most of the heat flux, while the other layers can be used to regulate and optimize. The dynamic relationship between the chemical potential μ and the gap distance d are thoroughly discussed. Optimal heat flux of our graphene-assisted hBN/SiO2 hybrid structure with proper choices of (μ1, μ2, μ3) for different d (from 10 nm to 1000 nm) is further increased by 28.2% on average in comparison with the existing graphene-hBN triple-layer structure.

Abstract:We study the radiative heat transfer between multilayer structures made by a periodic repetition of a graphene sheet and a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) slab. Surface plasmons in a monolayer graphene can couple with a hyperbolic phonon polaritons in a single hBN film to form hybrid polaritons that can assist photon tunneling. For periodic multilayer graphene/hBN structures, the stacked metallic/dielectric array can give rise to a further effective hyperbolic behavior, in addition to the intrinsic natural hyperbolic behavior of hBN. The effective hyperbolicity can enable more hyperbolic polaritons that enhance the photon tunneling and hence the near-field heat transfer. However, the hybrid polaritons on the surface, i.e. surface plasmon-phonon polaritons, dominate the near-field heat transfer between multilayer structures when the topmost layer is graphene. The effective hyperbolic regions can be well predicted by the effective medium theory (EMT), thought EMT fails to capture the hybrid surface polaritons and results in a heat transfer rate much lower compared to the exact calculation. The chemical potential of the graphene sheets can be tuned through electrical gating and results in an additional modulation of the heat transfer. We found that the near-field heat transfer between multilayer structure does not increase monotonously with the number of layer in the stack, which provides a way to control the heat transfer rate by the number of graphene layers in the multilayer structure. The results may benefit the applications of near-field energy harvesting and radiative cooling based on hybrid polaritons in two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:The combination of dissimilar materials to build heterostructures has opened up new possibilities for the use of graphene in a variety of applications. Among these, the stacking of graphene and h-BN into graphene/h-BN (GBN) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures is particularly promising for use as thermal interface materials and underfill materials in new electronic devices because of their remarkable thermal properties and electrical insulation endowed by h-BN if it encapsulates graphene. The heat dissipation performance of these GBN heterostructures depends heavily on the interfacial thermal conductance (ITC) of graphene and h-BN. Herein we explore the heat transfer across multilayer GBN vdW heterostructures by nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and put emphasis on the interface morphology. The tunable ITC of the heterostructure can be achieved by modifying the interfacial layers through composition diffusion, vacancy density and pattern, hydrogenation, and isotope. The simulation results demonstrate that hydrogenation is the most efficient approach to tailor the ITC with a large variation, followed by the composition diffusion. Composition diffusion can induce a stronger interaction between graphene and h-BN, resulting in a 70% improvement in the ITC of the GBN vdW heterostructure. This study offers valuable perspectives to the physical mechanisms behind the interface morphology-dependent ITC, and can facilitate the design of novel GBN vdW heterostructures for efficient heat dissipation.

Abstract:Thermal management is a critical task for highly integrated or high-power semiconductor devices. Low dimensional materials including graphene and single-layer hexagonal boron nitride (BN) are attractive candidates for this task because of their high thermal conductivity, semi-conductivity and other excellent physical properties. The similarities in crystal structure and chemistry between graphene and boron nitride provide the possibility of constructing graphene/BN heterostructures bearing unique functions. In this paper, we investigated the interfacial thermal transport properties of graphene/BN nanosheets via non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations. We observed a significant thermal rectification behavior of these graphene/BN nanosheets, and the rectification ratio increased with the system length increases up to 117%. This phenomenon is attributed to the mismatch of out-of-plane phonon vibration modes in two directions at the interface. In addition, we explored the underlying mechanism of the length dependence of the thermal transport properties. The results show promise for the thermal management of this two-dimensional heterostructure in an actively tunable manner.

Abstract:The two-dimensional nanomaterials graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) have good thermal properties. When the two are combined together to form a planar C-BN hybrid structure or a van der Waals heterostructure due to the differences in crystal lattice and the electronic structure between graphene and h-BN, the new material is formed with novel thermal characteristics. We focus on the thermal properties of the two new materials as they change their configuration, size, and number of layers and review these novel characteristics.

Abstract:Near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between multilayer graphene/hBN heterostructures has been demonstrated to exceed the blackbody limit due to the coupling mechanism of surface plasmon polaritons and hyperbolic phonon polaritons, opening the door to applications in thermal management, thermophotovoltaics, and nanoscale metrology. Recent studies have shown that adding vacuum layers within multilayer structures can effectively promote surface modes and thus enhance NFRHT. However, the influence of vacuum layers on NFRHT between multilayer graphene/hBN heterostructures has not been investigated. Moreover, the influence of vacuum layers on coupled resonance modes excited in multilayer structures is worth discussing. In this work, we study the NFRHT based on multilayer graphene/vacuum/hBN/vacuum structures. The results show that as the gap distance increases from 20 nm to 100 nm, the NFRHT of three-cell and six-cell configurations is enhanced, while that of unit-cell configuration is suppressed. The potential mechanism can be identified as the excitation of surface plasmon-phonon polaritons (SPPPs) and hyperbolic plasmon-phonon polaritons (HPPPs) in multilayer structures. The enhancement factor of the six-cell configurations is up to 4.82 when the gap distance is 80 nm. Moreover, the influences of the chemical potential of graphene and the layer thickness on the NFRHT are discussed. The interesting results in this work indicate the perspectives for future near-field research involving coupling of SPPPs and HPPPs, and shed new light on high-performance devices introducing vacuum layers based on near-field radiative heat transfer.

Abstract:A previous study reported an observed unidentified graphite/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) superlattice structure in special multilayer heterojunction devices via cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy [Haigh S. J. et al., Nat. Mater. 2012, 11, 764-767]. In this letter, we designed and confirmed two possible graphite/hBN superlattice structures (AA and Ab), which were probably the structures observed by the aforementioned experiment. The formation enthalpies of both structures were negative, indicating that they could be successfully synthesized as the previous experiment reported. The results also showed that both structures possessed dynamic stability and elastic stability. Importantly, the theoretical interlayer distances of AA and Ab were 3.34 and 3.30 angstrom, respectively, which were consistent with the experimental value of 3.32 angstrom. The X-ray diffraction patterns and Raman spectra of both structures were simulated to aid in distinguishing them. This study on the atomic structure of the graphite/hBN superlattice lays a foundation for further research and application of this material.

Abstract:The hybridization of surface plasmon polaritons and hyperbolic phonon polaritons in graphene/hBN heterostructures has been well documented to achieve very high radiative heat flux transferred in the near field, paving the way for wide applications ranging from energy harvesting, non-contact thermal management to thermal imaging. However, previous related theoretical studies mainly focused on suspended structures. When it comes to the experimental implementation, a supporting substrate is quite a necessity for this kind of 2D layered heterostructures to ensure structural stability. Herein, the near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between bi-planar graphene/hBN heterostructures was revisited by integrating them with various substrates, including Au, SiC, and silica, under the framework of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The results show that each substrate exerts significant impacts either further enhancing or suppressing the NFRHT between those bi-planar heterostructures, due to the competition between polaritonic couplings and dielectric losses. Whereas, these substrate effects depend on the hBN thickness with a critical length, beyond which the hBN itself is thick enough to indiscriminately screen all these effects. The findings in this study will be instructive to both the experimental designs and device integrations for graphene-based NFRHT applications.
