Abstract:Compressive spectral imaging (CSI) obtains spectral images through reconstruction from under-sampled low-dimensional projections with spatial and spectral coding. However, the simultaneous realization of high spatial-spectral resolution is challenged due to limitations of a single CSI architecture. In this paper, a hybrid CSI system combining the coded aperture snapshot spectral imaging (CASSI) and the spectrometer-based single-pixel spectral imaging (SPSI), with the corresponding coded aperture optimization for both constituent systems are proposed. The hybrid CSI system sustains the complementary advantages of the spatial resolution in CASSI and the spectral fidelity in SPSI, ensuring high reconstruction quality in both spatial and spectral dimensions with increased sampling efficiency. The derivable matrix operation of the hybrid CSI system is formulated; meanwhile, based on coherence minimization, the individual optimization on the coded apertures in the CASSI or the SPSI system, and the joint optimization on the coded apertures in the hybrid system are demonstrated. The reconstruction is further improved with the optimization, indicated by the quantitative image quality metrics and the point spectra. Compared to the conventional unoptimized CASSI, the optimized hybrid CSI system improves the PSNR for more than 7 dB. This work may introduce opportunities for multipath compressive imaging systems toward high-efficiency, high-resolution future.

Abstract:Compressed sensing has been discussed separately in spatial and temporal domains. Compressive holography has been introduced as a method that allows 3D tomographic reconstruction at different depths from a single 2D image. Coded exposure is a temporal compressed sensing method for high speed video acquisition. In this work, we combine compressive holography and coded exposure techniques and extend the discussion to 4D reconstruction in space and time from one coded captured image. In our prototype, digital in-line holography was used for imaging macroscopic, fast moving objects. The pixel-wise temporal modulation was implemented by a digital micromirror device. In this paper we demonstrate $10\times$ temporal super resolution with multiple depths recovery from a single image. Two examples are presented for the purpose of recording subtle vibrations and tracking small particles within 5 ms.

Abstract:Lensless digital holographic imaging could support high resolution, large field of view and three-dimensional (3D) imaging, but improving the resolution and quality of the reconstruction is still challenging. In this review paper, the compressive holographic models based on diffraction propagation method arc introduced. Compressive sensing arc developed based on total variation regularization and two-step iterative shrinkage/thresholding algorithm. The physical mechanism of removing two-order noise and twin image is discussed. A filter layer is designed to improve the signal to noise ratio of 3D reconstruction. A block-wise algorithm based on effective anti-aliasing region is proposed, which can improve computational efficiency of compressive holography. A single-shot compressive holographic model based on two-angle illumination beam is proposed. It effectively improves the axial resolution of 3D imaging. High-resolution 3D reconstruction of multilayer masks and particle flow field arc demonstrated by using this algorithm.

Abstract:Hyperspectral images (HSI) are a collection of hundreds of images which have been acquired simultaneously in narrow and adjacent spectral bands. Aimed at meeting the needs of real-time process of hyperspectral data, the development of compressive techniques before the transmission and storage becomes critical. Recently, Compressed Sampling (CS), which exploits the sparsity of signals, has been allowed to reconstruct signals with fewer measurements than the traditional Nyquist sampling approach. In order to make use of the spectral correlation and spatial correlation simultaneously in the compressed sampling process, in this paper we developed a new three-dimensional compressed sampling (3DCS) method to reduce the sampling rate. In 3DCS, the three-dimensional circulant sampling model is presented, which samples the hyperspectral images with a random convolution process and a band-varying subsampling. In addition, an efficient reconstruct algorithm called three-dimensional total variation (3DTV) by exploiting its spatial and spectral correlation is used for this 3DCS with guaranteed convergence. The experiment results demonstrate that the superiority of our proposed 3DCS over 2DCS which only makes uses the spatial correlation is in terms of high recovery accuracy with respect to the sampling rate. And the reconstruct image using our proposed 3DCS is much better than the traditional 2DCS.

Abstract:Existing three-dimensional (3-D) compressive sensing-based millimeter-wave (MMW) imaging methods require a large-scale storage of the sensing matrix and immense computations owing to the high dimension matrix-vector model employed in the optimization. To overcome this shortcoming, we propose an efficient compressive sensing (CS) method based on a holographic algorithm for near-field 3-D MMW imaging. An interpolation-free holographic imaging algorithm is developed and used as a sensing operator, in lieu of the nominal sensing matrix typically used in the CS iterative optimization procedure. In so doing, the problem induced by the large-scale sensing matrix is avoided. With no interpolations required, both the computational speed and the image quality can be improved. Simulation and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method in comparison with those of the Omega-K based CS and the traditional Fourier-based imaging techniques.

Abstract:3D optical coherence tomography imaging (OCT) combined with compressive sensing (CS) has been proved to be an attractive and effective tool in a variety of fields, such as medicine and biology. To achieve high quality imaging while using as less CS sampling rate as possible is the goal of this approach. Here we present an innovative single step fully 3D CS-OCT volumetric image recovery method, in which 3D OCT volumetric image of the object is compressively sampled via our proposed CS coding strategies in all three dimensions while its sparsity is simultaneously taken into consideration in every direction. The object can be directly recovered as the whole volume reconstruction via our advanced full 3D CS reconstruction algorithm. The numerical simulations of a human retina OCT volumetric image reconstruction by our method demonstrate a PSNR of as high as 38dB at a sampling rate of less than 10%.
High Sbp Compressive Holography With An Efficient Block-Wise Model

Abstract:High space-bandwidth product (SBP) imaging platform is an indispensable technique in diverse research fields, particularly in medical imaging and diagnosis. Because of the scale-dependent geometric aberrations of optical elements and the limited number of pixels of image sensor, high resolution and large field of view are hard to be realized simultaneously in traditional imaging systems. Compared with off-axis holography, in-line lensless holography could maintain high SBP without an imaging lens. Compressive holography (CH), which combines compressive sensing and in-line lensless holography, is considered as a promising solution for high SBP three-dimensional imaging. We developed a high SBP three-dimensional imaging algorithm using CH based on total-variation sparsity constraint. An efficient block-wise CH algorithm is proposed to reduce the reconstruction time. The block-wise model could locate accurate reconstruction searching spaces, resulting in high convergence speed and high image contrast.

Abstract:In this paper, a modified 3D computational reconstruction method in the compressive 4D-spectro-volumetric snapshot imaging system is proposed for better sensing spectral information of 3D objects. In the design of the imaging system, a microlens array (MLA) is used to obtain a set of multi-view elemental images (EIs) of the 3D scenes. Then, these elemental images with one dimensional spectral information and different perspectives are captured by the coded aperture snapshot spectral imager (CASSI) which can sense the spectral data cube onto a compressive 2D measurement image. Finally, the depth images of 3D objects at arbitrary depths, like a focal stack, are computed by inversely mapping the elemental images according to geometrical optics. With the spectral estimation algorithm, the spectral information of 3D objects is also reconstructed. Using a shifted translation matrix, the contrast of the reconstruction result is further enhanced. Numerical simulation results verify the performance of the proposed method. The system can obtain both 3D spatial information and spectral data on 3D objects using only one single snapshot, which is valuable in the agricultural harvesting robots and other 3D dynamic scenes.
Compressive Whiskbroom Sensing and Data Reconstruction for Hyperspectral Imaging

Abstract:Owing to the requirements of high spectral resolution, conventional hyperspectral remote-sensing imaging systems are susceptible to bottleneck problems related to high rate sampling and mass data storage. Compressive sampling possesses the potential to solve many problems associated with hyperspectral remote sensing. An optical imaging system for compressive whiskbroom sensing in hyperspectral remote-sensing imaging is proposed in this paper. The proposed system comprises spatial grating, a cylindrical lens, a two-dimensional coded aperture, and a linear sensor array. The system, which enables multiple simultaneous compressive measurements, is designed for spectrum sensing operations. An iterative prediction reconstruction algorithm is designed based on the spatial correlation of hyperspectral images. Experimental results show that the reconstruction signal-to-noise ratio of the proposed algorithm is improved by more than 10dB when the sampling rate exceeds 0.2. The sampling simplicity of the system makes it suitable for hyperspectral compressive imaging in space-borne and airborne remote-sensing platforms.

Abstract:Photoacoustic imaging, an acoustic imaging modality with potentially optical resolution in an optical turbid medium, has attracted great attention. However, the convergence of wavefront optimization and raster scanning in computational photoacoustic imaging leads to the challenge of fast mapping, especially for a spatial resolution approaching the acoustic deep-subwavelength regime. As a sparse sampling paradigm, compressive sensing has been applied in numerous fields to accelerate data acquisition without significant quality losses. In this work, we propose a dual-compressed approach for photoacoustic surface tomography that enables high-efficiency imaging with 3D spatial resolution unlimited by the acoustics in a turbid environment. The dual-compressed photoacoustic imaging with single-pixel detection, enabled by spatially optical modulation with synchronized temporally photoacoustic coding, allows decoding of the fine optical information from the modulated acoustic signal even when the variance of original photoacoustic signals is weak. We perform a proof-of-principle numerical demonstration of dual-compressed photoacoustic imaging, that resolves acoustic sub-acoustic-wavelength details with a significantly reduced number of measurements, revealing the potential for dynamic imaging. The dual-compressed concept, which transforms unobtrusive spatial difference into spatio-temporal detectable information, can be generalized to other imaging modalities to realize efficient, high-spatial-resolution imaging.

Abstract:Optical microscopy approaches that provide acquisition of 3D information from a volumetric object are attractive for a number of biomedical applications. For example, conventional widefield microscopy requires depth focusing to obtain 3D signals within a biological sample volume. With confocal scanning microscopy,1 micrometer—or sub-micrometer—level resolution can be achieved, and contrast can be improved by using a small aperture to reject out-of-focus light. Efforts to improve the scanning speeds of these techniques, by optimizing scanning algorithms,2, 3 are ongoing. Such methods, however, are complicated and do not eliminate the need for moving parts. In addition, the complex designs that are involved increase the cost of the devices and reduce their robustness. Digital holographic microscopy (DHM)4 has recently been used to retrieve 3D information for biological samples. With DHM, a high-resolution CCD camera is used to record holograms. Each hologram consists of a 2D slice of the object, and the holograms are superimposed and stored in computer memory. Although with this approach volumetric image data for an object can be reconstructed from the stored information, it requires complex computational reconstruction techniques and has stringent optical and mechanical design requirements for imaging. We have developed a spatial-spectral imaging method that can be used to acquire resolved images from multiple depths simultaneously. We are able to leverage a strong Bragg filtering property of a wavefront—with respect to angle (spatial) and wavelength (spectral)5—in our volume holographic imaging (VHI) approach to capture multi-plane images in real time, without scanning. Furthermore, a key volume hologram component in VHI offers a 3D pupil, rather than a conventional 2D diffractive element. Abstract:Single-pixel holography (SPH) is capable of generating holographic images with rich spatial information by employing only a single-pixel detector. Thanks to the relatively low dark-noise production, high sensitivity, large bandwidth, and cheap price of single-pixel detectors in comparison to pixel-array detectors, SPH is becoming an attractive imaging modality at wavelengths where pixel-array detectors are not available or prohibitively expensive. In this work, we develop a high-throughput single-pixel compressive holography with a space-bandwidth-time product (SBP-T) of 41,667 pixels/s, realized by enabling phase stepping naturally in time and abandoning the need for phase-encoded illumination. This holographic system is scalable to provide either a large field of view (similar to 83 mm(2)) or a high resolution (5.80 mu m x 4.31 mu m). In particular, high-resolution holographic images of biological tissues are presented, exhibiting rich contrast in both amplitude and phase. This work is an important step towards multi-spectrum imaging using a single-pixel detector in biophotonics.

Abstract:A super resolution optic three-dimensional imaging based on compressed sensing was proposed for better optic imaging, in which imaging system was consisted of object glass, coding template, dispersion element, collimating lens, focus lens, detector in the front, hyperspectral data was reconstructed in the end by sparse reconstruction algorithm, so the most of data processing was transformed to the back-end from the imaging system. Meanwhile, Piece reconstruction, dislocation pretreatment and multi-frame reconstruction were used for improving accuracy of reconstruction, reducing memory of the back-processing, lowing computation complexity. By comparing the spectral curve, signal noise ratio, spectral error of the original and the reconstructed data cube, and doing classification and identification analysis, it was gained that the proposed compressed sensing could realize super resolution optic three-dimensional imaging, which have better property in imaging and data application, it can be used in big breath, high resolution, low power consumption and moving-target imaging observation. ©, 2015, Chinese Optical Society. A Fast Super-Resolution Holographic Imaging System Based on Compressive Sensing

Abstract:Structured light illumination (SI) is a most commonly used method to realize super-resolution microscopy. However, resolution enhancement in multiple spatial directions requires multiple SI to reconstruct the image, a typical number of which is nine. This technology requires the CCD camera to record corresponding numbers of images, which takes a quite long time to record a sample. In this paper, we design an optical system to combine compressive sensing (CS) algorithm with SI to realize the fast super-resolution imaging. Coded exposure technique is used to sample the hologram formed by the diffraction of the object illuminated by SI and processed with CS algorithm later. In the process of collecting 9 images with SI, the CCD only exposes 5 times, which saves nearly half of the time and operation steps. After comparison in simulation, the resolution of the SI reconstructed image using 50% sampling CS is 0.12 times higher than that of the method without SI illumination, and is the same as the resolution of the SI reconstructed image using full sampling. The method and the system realize the fast super-resolution imaging.

Abstract:Digital holography (DH) could realize three dimensional (3-D) imaging since it records the wavefront induced by an object volume. However, DH suffers from two inherent drawbacks for 3-D imaging: the twin images and cross talks between different depths. Both these two terms severely trouble DH because they couple with the reconstructed signal, particularly under microscopic configuration. In this work, we briefly review the signal decoupling techniques in DH and introduce the achieved micron-level depth-resolved uncoupled signal reconstruction via compressive sensing (CS). As an optimization strategy for signal reconstruction, CS is capable of filtering out the coupled signals by sparsity constraint. The CS based signal decoupling in DH is analyzed and verified by numerical simulations and optical experiments.

Abstract:Conventionally endoscopic OCT images are reconstructed by uniform sampling in both axial and transverse direction of the image. To shorten the scanning time and reduce the acquisition data, we propose to sparsely sample the axial scans and use compressive sensing (CS) to reconstruct the full endoscopic OCT image with randomly chosen axial scans that are much less than conventional Nyquist criteria requirement. And we study the ratio of sparse sampling numerically and experimentally that are required to reconstruct acceptable OCT images. We demonstrate that the OCT image acquisition time can be significantly reduced because of much less acquired data.

Abstract:In this paper, compressive sensing based high-speed time-stretch optical microscopy for two-dimensional (2D) image acquisition is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. A section of dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) is used to perform wavelength-to-time conversion and then ultrafast spectral shaping of broadband optical pulses can be achieved via high-speed intensity modulation. A 2D spatial disperser comprising a pair of orthogonally oriented dispersers is employed to produce spatially structured illumination for 2D image acquisition and a section of single mode fiber (SMF) is utilized for pulse compression in the optical domain. In our scheme, a 1.2-GHz photodetector and a 50-MHz analog-to-digital converter (ADC) are used to acquire the energy of the compressed pulses. Image reconstructions are demonstrated at a frame rate of 500 kHz and a sixteen-fold image compression is achieved in our proof-of-concept demonstration.
