Abstract:We give a description of unital operads in a symmetric monoidal category as monoids in a monoidal category of unital $\Lambda$-sequences. This is a new variant of Kelly's old description of operads as monoids in the monoidal category of symmetric sequences. The monads associated to unital operads are the ones of interest in iterated loop space theory and factorization homology, among many other applications. Our new description of unital operads allows an illuminating comparison between the two-sided monadic bar constructions used in such applications and "classical" monoidal two-sided bar constructions. It also allows a more conceptual understanding of the scanning map central to non-abelian Poincaré duality in factorization homology.

Unital k-Restricted Infinity-Operads

Abstract:We study unital $\infty$-operads by their arity restrictions. Given $k \geq 1$, we develop a model for unital $k$-restricted $\infty$-operads, which are variants of $\infty$-operads which has only $(\leq k)$-arity morphisms, as complete Segal presheaves on closed $k$-dendroidal trees, which are closed trees build from corollas with valences $\leq k$. Furthermore, we prove that the restriction functors from unital $\infty$-operads to unital $k$-restricted $\infty$-operads admit fully faithful left and right adjoints by showing that the left and right Kan extensions preserve complete Segal objects. Varying $k$, the left and right adjoints give a filtration and a co-filtration for any unital $\infty$-operads by $k$-restricted $\infty$-operads.

Structural aspects of truncated archimedean vector lattices: simple elements, good sequences

Abstract:The truncation operation facilitates the articulation and analysis of several aspects of the structure of archimedean vector lattices; we investigate two such aspects in this article. We refer to archimedean vector lattices equipped with a truncation as \emph{truncs}. In the first part of the article we review the basic definitions, state the (pointed) Yosida Representation Theorem for truncs, and then prove a representation theorem which subsumes and extends the (pointfree) Madden Representation Theorem. The proof has the virtue of being much shorter than the one in the literature, but the real novelty of the theorem lies in the fact that the topological data dual to a given trunc $G$ is a (localic) compactification, i.e., a dense pointed frame surjection $q \colon M \to L$ out of a compact regular pointed frame $M$. The representation is an amalgam of the Yosida and Madden representations; the compact frame $M$ is sufficient to describe the behavior of the bounded part $G^*$ of $G$ in the sense that $\widetilde{G}^*$ separates the points of the compact Hausdorff pointed space $X$ dual to $M$, while the frame $L$ is just sufficient to capture the behavior of the unbounded part of $G$ in $\mathcal{R}_0 L$. The truncation operation lends itself to identifying those elements of a trunc which behave like characteristic functions, and in the second part of the article we characterize in several ways those truncs composed of linear combinations of such elements. Along the way, we show that the category of such truncs is equivalent to the category of pointed Boolean spaces, and to the category of generalized Boolean algebras. The short third part contains a characterization of the kernels of truncation homomorphisms in terms of pointwise closure. In it we correct an error in the literature.

Abstract:We study operads with trivial $\mathbb{A}$-actions and prove an equivalence between the category of $\mathbb{A}$-trivial operads and that of pseudo-graded-Perm associative algebras. As a consequence, we show that finitely generated $\mathbb{A}$-trivial operads are right noetherian of integral Gelfand-Kirillov dimension and that every element in a prime $\mathbb{A}$-trivial operad is central.

Truncation Approximations and Spectral Invariant Subalgebras in Uniform Roe Algebras of Discrete Groups

Abstract:In this paper we study band truncation approximations for operators in uniform Roe algebras of countable discrete groups. Under conditions on certain growth rates for discrete groups, we find large classes of dense subspaces of uniform Roe algebras whose elements can be approximated by their band truncations in the operator norm. We apply these results to construct a nested family of spectral invariant Banach algebras on discrete groups. For a group with polynomial growth, the intersection of these Banach algebras is a spectral invariant dense subalgebra of the uniform Roe algebra. For a group with subexponential growth, we show that the Wiener algebra of the group is a spectral invariant dense subalgebra of the uniform Roe algebra.

Abstract:We introduce a construction that associates, to each finite dimensional k-vector space V, a family of projective k-varieties that comes equipped with the structure of a operad in the category of k-schemes. When dim V = 1, this operad contains, as a suboperad, the family of moduli spaces of stably marked rational curves. For general V, our operad contains the family of Chen-Gibney-Krashen moduli spaces of stably marked trees of projective spaces as a suboperad. We realize our operad as part of a larger theory that describes how to construct operads from suitable functors. Given a category C that satisfies conditions allowing us to consider the operation of "substituting a value into an argument" within C, and given any functor F on C satisfying a variant of right-exactness, we construct a version of a set-valued operad whose inputs are given by objects in C. When C happens to be the category of nonempty finite sets, we obtain operads in the classic sense. Finally, we show that in many cases it is possible to realize these operads as disjoint unions of quiver Grassmannians.

Abstract:Let Q be a regular local ring of dimension 3. We show how to trim a Gorenstein ideal in Q to obtain an ideal that defines a quotient ring that is close to Gorenstein in the sense that its Koszul homology algebra is a Poincare duality algebra P padded with a non-zero graded vector space on which P_{\ge 1} acts trivially. We explicitly construct an infinite family of such rings.

Abstract:Let $(R,\mathfrak{m},\Bbbk)$ be a regular local ring of dimension 3. Let $I$ be a Gorenstein ideal of $R$ of grade 3. Buchsbaum and Eisenbud proved that there is a skew-symmetric matrix of odd size such that $I$ is generated by the sub-maximal pfaffians of this matrix. Let $J$ be the ideal obtained by multiplying some of the pfaffian generators of $I$ by $\mathfrak{m}$; we say that $J$ is a trimming of $I$. Building on a recent paper of Vandebogert, we construct an explicit free resolution of $R/J$ and compute a partial DG algebra structure on this resolution. We provide the full DG algebra structure in the appendix. We use the products on this resolution to study the Tor algebra of such trimmed ideals and we use the information obtained to prove that recent conjectures of Christensen, Veliche and Weyman on ideals of class $\mathbf{G}$ hold true in our context. Furthermore, we address the realizability question for ideals of class $\mathbf{G}$.

Abstract:The paper concerns the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension and the generating series of nonsymmetric operads. An analogue of Bergman's gap theorem is proved, namely, no finitely generated locally finite nonsymmetric operad has Gelfand-Kirillov dimension strictly between $1$ and $2$. For every $r\in \{0\}\cup \{1\}\cup [2,\infty)$ or $r=\infty$, we construct a single-element generated nonsymmetric operad with Gelfand-Kirillov dimension $r$. We also provide counterexamples to two expectations of Khoroshkin and Piontkovski about the generating series of operads.

The spectrum of units of algebraic $K$-theory

Abstract:It is well known that the $[0,1]$ and $[0,2]$ Postnikov truncations of the units of the topological $K$-theories $\glone \KO$ and $\glone \KU$, respectively, are split, and that the splitting is provided by the ($\Z/2$-graded) line bundles. In this paper we give a similar splitting for the $[0,1]$-truncation of the units of algebraic $K$-theory, considered as a sheaf on affine schemes. A crucial step is to produce the splitting for $\glone K(\Z)$. Along the way we also give a complete calculation of the connective spectrum of strict units of $K(\Z)$ and $K(\F_\ell)$ for a prime $\ell$. Finally, we show that the units of algebraic $K$-theory do not split as a presheaf. In fact we show they do not even split pointwise.

Abstract:We propose a generalization of K-theory to operator systems. Motivated by spectral truncations of noncommutative spaces described by $C^*$-algebras and inspired by the realization of the K-theory of a $C^*$-algebra as the Witt group of hermitian forms, we introduce new operator system invariants indexed by the corresponding matrix size. A direct system is constructed whose direct limit possesses a semigroup structure, and we define the $K_0$-group as the corresponding Grothendieck group. This is an invariant of unital operator systems, and, more generally, an invariant up to Morita equivalence of operator systems. For $C^*$-algebras it reduces to the usual definition. We illustrate our invariant by means of the spectral localizer.

Abstract:We present a Markl-style definition of operads colored by a small category. In the presence of a unit these are equivalent to substitudes of Day and Street. We show that operads colored by a category are internal algebras of a certain categorical operad of functors. We describe a groupoid-colored quadratic binary operad, whose algebras are non-unital Markl operads in the context of operadic categories. As a by-product we describe the free internal operad construction.

Abstract:We investigate when a linear functional $L$ defined on a linear subspace $B$ of a unital commutative real algebra $A$ admits an integral representation w.r.t. a positive Radon measure supported on a closed subset $K$ of the character space of $A$. We provide a criterion for the existence of such a representation for $L$ when $A$ is equipped with a submultiplicative seminorm. We then build on this result to prove our main theorem for $A$ not necessarily equipped with a topology. This allows us to extend well-known classical results on truncated moment problems.

Abstract:In this article, we characterize convexity in terms of algebras over a PROP, and establish a tensor-product-like symmetric monoidal structure on the category of convex sets. Using these two structures, and the theory of $\scr{O}$-monoidal categories, we state and prove a Grothendieck construction for lax $\scr{O}$-monoidal functors into convex sets. We apply this construction to the categorical characterization of entropy of Baez, Fritz, and Leinster, and to the study of quantum contextuality in the framework of simplicial distributions.

Abstract:Infinitesimal deformations are governed by partition Lie algebras. In characteristic $0$, these higher categorical structures are modelled by differential graded Lie algebras, but in characteristic $p$, they are more subtle. We give explicit models for partition Lie algebras over general coherent rings, both in the setting of spectral and derived algebraic geometry. For the spectral case, we refine operadic Koszul duality to a functor from operads to divided power operads, by taking refined linear duals of $\Sigma_n$-representations. The derived case requires a further refinement of Koszul duality to a more genuine setting.
