Efficient Quantum Algorithm for Port-based Teleportation

Abstract:In this paper, we provide the first efficient algorithm for port-based teleportation, a unitarily equivariant version of teleportation useful for constructing programmable quantum processors and performing instantaneous nonlocal computation (NLQC). The latter connection is important in AdS/CFT, where bulk computations are realized as boundary NLQC. Our algorithm yields an exponential improvement to the known relationship between the amount of entanglement available and the complexity of the nonlocal part of any unitary that can be implemented using NLQC. Similarly, our algorithm provides the first nontrivial efficient algorithm for an approximate universal programmable quantum processor. The key to our approach is a generalization of Schur-Weyl duality we call twisted Schur-Weyl duality, as well as an efficient algorithm we develop for the twisted Schur transform, which transforms to a subgroup-reduced irrep basis of the partially transposed permutation algebra, whose dual is the $U^{\otimes n-k} \otimes (U^*)^{\otimes k}$ representation of the unitary group.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation is one of the most important protocols in quantum information. By exploiting the physical resource of entanglement, quantum teleportation serves as a key primitive in a variety of quantum information tasks and represents an important building block for quantum technologies, with a pivotal role in the continuing progress of quantum communication, quantum computing and quantum networks. Here we review the basic theoretical ideas behind quantum teleportation and its variant protocols. We focus on the main experiments, together with the technical advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of the various technologies, from photonic qubits and optical modes to atomic ensembles, trapped atoms, and solid-state systems. Analysing the current state-of-the-art, we finish by discussing open issues, challenges and potential future implementations.

Abstract:Teleportation protocol is conventionally treated as a method for quantum state transfer between two spatially separated physical carriers. Recent experimental progress in manipulation with high-dimensional quantum systems opens a new framework for implementation of teleportation protocols. We show that the one-qubit teleportation can be considered as a state transfer between subspaces of the whole Hilbert space of an indivisible eight-dimensional system. We explicitly show all corresponding operations and discuss an alternative way of implementation of similar tasks.

Abstract:Abstract Quantum teleportation transfers unknown quantum states from one node in a quantum network to another. It is one of the crucial architectures in quantum information processing. The teleportation of high-dimensional quantum states remains challenging due to the difficulties in executing high-dimensional Bell state measurement. Here, we propose a Quantum Autoencoder-Facilitated Teleportation (QAFT) protocol for high-dimensional quantum teleportation, and report the first demonstration of QAFT on qutrits using an integrated photonic platform for future scalability. The key strategy is to reduce the dimension of the input states by erasing redundant information and reconstruct its initial state after chip-to-chip teleportation. Machine learning is applied in training the autoencoder to facilitate the teleportation of any state from a particular high-dimensional subspace and achieve the reconstruction of the unknown state (by the decoder) with high fidelities (~ 0.971). Experimentally, we teleport unknown qutrits by generating, transferring and manipulating photons, and training quantum autoencoders on a silicon chip. A teleportation fidelity of ~ 0.894 is demonstrated. Our scheme opens pathway towards quantum internet and cryptography to transfer unmeasured states in a quantum computer. It also lays the groundwork for machine learning technologies in quantum networks and quantum computations.

Abstract:Quantum autoencoders serve as efficient means for quantum data compression. Here, we propose and demonstrate their use to reduce resource costs for quantum teleportation of subspaces in high-dimensional systems. We use a quantum autoencoder in a compress-teleport-decompress manner and report the first demonstration with qutrits using an integrated photonic platform for future scalability. The key strategy is to compress the dimensionality of input states by erasing redundant information and recover the initial states after chip-to-chip teleportation. Unsupervised machine learning is applied to train the on-chip autoencoder, enabling the compression and teleportation of any state from a high-dimensional subspace. Unknown states are decompressed at a high fidelity (~0.971), obtaining a total teleportation fidelity of ~0.894. Subspace encodings hold great potential as they support enhanced noise robustness and increased coherence. Laying the groundwork for machine learning techniques in quantum systems, our scheme opens previously unidentified paths toward high-dimensional quantum computing and networking.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation allows a "disembodied" transmission of unknown quantum states between distant quantum systems. Yet, all teleportation experiments to date were limited to a two-dimensional subspace of quantized multiple levels of the quantum systems. Here, we propose a scheme for teleportation of arbitrarily high-dimensional photonic quantum states and demonstrate an example of teleporting a qutrit. Measurements over a complete set of 12 qutrit states in mutually unbiased bases yield a teleportation fidelity of 0.75(1), which is well above both the optimal single-copy qutrit state-estimation limit of 1/2 and maximal qubit-qutrit overlap of 2/3, thus confirming a genuine and nonclassical three-dimensional teleportation. Our work will enable advanced quantum technologies in high dimensions, since teleportation plays a central role in quantum repeaters and quantum networks.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation provides a way to transmit unknown quantum states from one location to another. In the quantum world, multilevel systems which enable high-dimensional systems are more prevalent. Therefore, to completely rebuild the quantum states of a single particle remotely, one needs to teleport multilevel (high-dimensional) states. Here, we demonstrate the teleportation of high-dimensional states in a three-dimensional six-photon system. We exploit the spatial mode of a single photon as the high-dimensional system, use two auxiliary entangled photons to realize a deterministic three-dimensional Bell state measurement. The fidelity of teleportation process matrix is F=0.596±0.037. Through this process matrix, we can prove that our teleportation is both nonclassical and genuine three dimensional. Our work paves the way to rebuild complex quantum systems remotely and to construct complex quantum networks.

Abstract:We introduce new teleportation protocols which are generalizations of the original teleportation protocols that use the Pauli group [Bennett, et al. Physical Review Letters, 70(13) 1895-1899] and the port-based teleportation protocols, introduced by Hiroshima and Ishizaka [Physical Review Letters, 101(24) 240501], that use the symmetric permutation group. We derive sufficient condition for a set of operations, which in general need not form a group, to give rise to a teleportation protocol and provide examples of such schemes. This generalization leads to protocols with novel properties and is needed to push forward new schemes of computation based on them. Port-based teleportation protocols and our generalizations use a large resource state consisting of N singlets to teleport only a single qubit state reliably. We provide two distinct protocols which recycle the resource state to teleport multiple states with error linearly increasing with their number. The first protocol consists of sequentially teleporting qubit states, and the second teleports them in a bulk.

Abstract:To build a global quantum communication network, low-transmission, fiber-based communication channels can be supplemented by using a free-space channel between a satellite and a ground station on Earth. We have constructed a system that generates hyperentangled photonic "ququarts" and measures them to execute multiple quantum communication protocols of interest. We have successfully executed and characterized superdense teleportation, a modified remote-state preparation protocol that transfers more quantum information than standard teleportation, for the same classical information cost, and moreover, is in principle deterministic. Our measurements show an average fidelity of $0.94\pm0.02$, with a phase resolution of $\sim7^{\circ}$, allowing reliable transmission of $>10^5$ distinguishable quantum states. Additionally, we have demonstrated the ability to compensate for the Doppler shift, which would otherwise prevent sending time-bin encoded states from a rapidly moving satellite, thus allowing the low-error execution of phase-sensitive protocols during an orbital pass. Finally, we show that the estimated number of received coincidence counts in a realistic implementation is sufficient to enable faithful reconstruction of the received state in a single pass.

Abstract:The concept of interferometric teleportation is reported. Also, based on this concept, a quantum secure communication protocol is proposed. Higher efficiency and rate are achieved by the proposed protocol in comparison with the original teleportation‐based protocol. The security of the proposed scheme is based on the principles of both quantum mechanics and special relativity. The paper introduces the concept of interferometric quantum teleportation. Based on this concept, a quantum secure communication (QSC) protocol, operating in a single‐photon regime is proposed. The proposed protocol is characterized with higher efficiency and data rate than its original counterpart, namely, the teleportation‐based quantum secure communication (T‐QSC). The proposal is verified to be secure. Its security relies on both quantum (polarization of qubits) and relativistic (speed of light) restrictions. The relativistic restriction is possible due to the use of an interferometric quantum channel, like the relativistic quantum key distribution.

Abstract:Traditional continuous variable teleportation can only approach unit fidelity in the limit of an infinite (and unphysical) amount of squeezing. We describe a new method for continuous variable teleportation that approaches unit fidelity with finite resources. The protocol is not based on squeezed states as in traditional teleportation but on an ensemble of single photon entangled states. We characterize the teleportation scheme with coherent states, Schrodinger cat states and two-mode squeezed state and we find several situations in which near-unity teleportation fidelity can be obtained with modest resources.

Abstract:We present a protocol for faithful teleportation of an arbitrary single qubit state in a quantum network with n-parties utilizing the maximally entangled n-partite GHZ state. In our approach, starting with three parties, Alice, the sender must perform a Bell state measurement on her qubits, then the intermediate parties perform Hadamard operation along with single qubit state measurements. Finally the receiver reconstructs the teleported state by doing appropriate unitary operations. We systematically increase the number of parties involved in the process and show that the teleportation can be achieved successfully with each additional participant. By generalizing the results to n-qubit GHZ state, one can achieve serial teleportation involving the sender Alice, the receiver and intermediate parties. We have further employed decoy qubits into our scheme to enhance the security against any potential external threats. In addition, the intrinsic efficiency of teleportation is also calculated and compared with other standard protocols.

Teleportation of Hybrid Entangled States with Continuous-Variable Entanglement

Abstract:Hybrid entanglement between discrete-variable (DV) and continuous-variable (CV) quantum systems is an essential resource for heterogeneous quantum networks. Our previous work showed that in lossy channels the teleportation of DV qubits, via CV-entangled states, can be significantly improved by a new protocol defined by a modified Bell state measurement at the sender. This work explores whether a new, similarly modified, CV-based teleportation protocol can lead to improvement in the transfer of hybrid entangled states. To set the scene, we first determine the performance of such a modified protocol in teleporting CV-only qubits, showing that significant improvement over traditional CV-based teleportation is obtained. We then explore similar modifications in the teleportation of a specific hybrid entangled state showing that significant improvement over traditional CV-based teleportation is again found. For a given channel loss, we find teleporting the DV qubit of the hybrid entangled state can always achieve higher fidelity than teleporting the CV qubit. We then explore the use of various non-Gaussian operations in our modified teleportation protocol, finding that, at a cost of lower success probability, quantum scissors provides the most improvement in the loss tolerance. Our new results emphasize that in lossy conditions, the quantum measurements undertaken at the sender can have a surprising and dramatic impact on CV-based teleportation.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation(1) is central to quantum communication, and plays an important role in a number of quantum computation protocols(2,3). Most information-processing applications of quantum teleportation include the subsequent manipulation of the qubit (the teleported photon), so it is highly desirable to have a teleportation procedure resulting in high-quality, freely flying qubits. In our previous teleportation experiment(4), the teleported qubit had to be detected (and thus destroyed) to verify the success of the procedure. Here we report a teleportation experiment that results in freely propagating individual qubits. The basic idea is to suppress unwanted coincidence detection events by providing the photon to be teleported much less frequently than the auxiliary entangled pair. Therefore, a case of successful teleportation can be identified with high probability without the need actually to detect the teleported photon. The experimental fidelity of our procedure surpasses the theoretical limit required for the implementation of quantum repeaters(5,6).

Abstract:Quantum teleportation is a quantum communication primitive that allows a long-distance quantum channel to be built using pre-shared entanglement and one-way classical communication. However, the quality of the established channel crucially depends on the quality of the pre-shared entanglement. In this work, we revisit the problem of using noisy entanglement for the task of teleportation. We first show how this problem can be rephrased as a state discrimination problem. In this picture, a quantitative duality between teleportation and dense coding emerges in which every Alice-to-Bob teleportation protocol can be repurposed as a Bob-to-Alice dense coding protocol, and the quality of each protocol can be measured by the success probability in the same state discrimination problem. One of our main results provides a complete characterization of the states that offer no advantage in one-way teleportation protocols over classical states, thereby offering a new and intriguing perspective on the long-standing open problem of identifying such states. This also yields a new proof of the known fact that bound entangled states cannot exceed the classical teleportation threshold. Moreover, our established duality between teleportation and dense coding can be used to show that the exact same states are unable to provide a non-classical advantage for dense coding as well. We also discuss the duality from a communication capacity point of view, deriving upper and lower bounds on the accessible information of a dense coding protocol in terms of the fidelity of its associated teleportation protocol. A corollary of this discussion is a simple proof of the previously established fact that bound entangled states do not provide any advantage in dense coding.

Efficient quantum circuits for port-based teleportation

Abstract:Port-based teleportation (PBT) is a variant of quantum teleportation that, unlike the canonical protocol by Bennett et al., does not require a correction operation on the teleported state. Since its introduction by Ishizaka and Hiroshima in 2008, no efficient implementation of PBT was known. We close this long-standing gap by building on our recent results on representations of partially transposed permutation matrix algebras and mixed quantum Schur transform. We construct efficient quantum algorithms for probabilistic and deterministic PBT protocols on $n$ ports of arbitrary local dimension, both for EPR and optimized resource states. We describe two constructions based on different encodings of the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis for $n$ qudits: a standard encoding that achieves $\widetilde{O}(n)$ time and $O(n\log(n))$ space complexity, and a Yamanouchi encoding that achieves $\widetilde{O}(n^2)$ time and $O(\log(n))$ space complexity, both for constant local dimension and target error. We also describe efficient circuits for preparing the optimal resource states.

Abstract:We investigate quantum teleportation in the two-copy setting based on GHZ measurement and propose the detailed protocol. The output state after the teleportation is analyzed, and the protocol is proved to be trace preserving. The general expression of the optimal teleportation fidelity is derived. The optimal teleportation fidelity is shown to be a linear function of two-copy fully entangled fraction, which is invariant under local unitary transformations. At last, we show two-copy teleportation based on GHZ measurement can be better than one-copy teleportation by an explicit example, which is amenable to demonstration in experiments. Our study is significant for improving the fidelity of teleportation for some limited resource which cannot be significantly distilled. Moreover, it can inspire us to find many other more efficient protocols for teleportation.

Abstract:Quantum teleportation, a transfer protocol of quantum states, is the essence of many sophisticated quantum information protocols. There have been two complementary approaches to optical quantum teleportation: discrete variables (DVs) and continuous variables (CVs). However, both approaches have pros and cons. Here we take a “hybrid” approach to overcome the current limitations: CV quantum teleportation of DVs. This approach enabled the first realization of deterministic quantum teleportation of photonic qubits without post-selection. We also applied the hybrid scheme to several experiments, including entanglement swapping between DVs and CVs, conditional CV teleportation of single photons, and CV teleportation of qutrits. We are now aiming at universal, scalable, and fault-tolerant quantum computing based on these hybrid technologies.

Abstract:We apply covert quantum communication based on entanglement generated from the Minkowski vacuum to the setting of quantum computation and quantum networks. Our approach hides the generation and distribution of entanglement in quantum networks by taking advantage of relativistic quantum effects. We devise a suite of covert quantum teleportation protocols that utilize the shared entanglement, local operations, and covert classical communication to transfer or process quantum information in stealth. As an application of our covert suite, we construct two prominent examples of measurement-based quantum computation, namely the teleportation-based quantum computer and the one-way quantum computer. In the latter case we explore the covert generation of graph states, and subsequently outline a protocol for the covert implementation of universal blind quantum computation.
