Abstract:This talk presents our derivation of the jet quenching parameter of 𝒩 = 4 super symmetric Yang-Mills theory to the sub-leading term in the large 't Hooft coupling λ at a nonzero temperature by including the world-sheet fluctuations around the classical world sheet from AdS /CFT. The strong coupling expansion corresponds to the semi-classical expansion of the string-sigma model, the gravity dual of the Wilson loop operator, with the sub-leading term expressed in terms of functional determinants of fluctuations. The contribution of these determinants are evaluated numerically. We find the jet quenching parameter is reduced due to world sheet fluctuations by a factor (1 - 1.97λ-1/2). Some insights have been discussed by the comparison between experimental data and our result and other theoretical calculations.

Abstract:A number of recent papers have applied the AdS/CFT correspondence to a strong-coupling calculation of the medium-induced radiative parton energy loss in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC. The predicted value of the "jet quenching parameter" q, however, is rather small compared to the experimental results. For hot N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, certain marginal deformations can have the effect of enhancing q. This result is highly sensitive to the location of the fundamental string's endpoints in the internal space.

Abstract:The gluonic contribution to the nuclear modification factor R-AA is investigated for central Au + Au collisions at root s = 200 AGeV employing a perturbative QCD-based parton cascade including radiative processes. A flat quenching pattern is found up to transverse momenta of 30 GeV, which is slightly smaller compared with results from the Gyulassy-Levai-Vitev formalism. We demonstrate that the present microscopic transport description provides a challenging means of investigating both jet quenching and a strong buildup of elliptic flow in terms of the same standard perturbative QCD interactions.

Abstract:Within five different approaches to parton propagation and energy loss in dense matter, a phenomenological study of experimental data on suppression of large $p_T$ single inclusive hadrons in heavy-ion collisions at both RHIC and LHC was carried out. The evolution of bulk medium used in the study for parton propagation was given by 2+1D or 3+1D hydrodynamic models which are also constrained by experimental data on bulk hadron spectra. Values for the jet transport parameter $\hat q$ at the center of the most central heavy-ion collisions are extracted or calculated within each model, with parameters for the medium properties that are constrained by experimental data on the hadron suppression factor $R_{AA}$. For a quark with initial energy of 10 GeV we find that $\hat q\approx 1.2 \pm 0.3$ GeV$^2$/fm at an initial time $\tau_0=0.6$ fm/$c$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV/n and $\hat q\approx 1.9 \pm 0.7 $ GeV$^2$/fm in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76 $ TeV/n. Compared to earlier studies, these represent significant convergence on values of the extracted jet transport parameter, reflecting recent advances in theory and the availability of new experiment data from the LHC.

Abstract:The effect of finite coupling corrections to the Langevin diffusion coefficients on a moving heavy quark in the Super Yang-Mills plasma is investigated. These corrections are related to curvature squared corrections in the corresponding gravity sector. We compare the results of both longitudinal and perpendicular Langevin diffusion coefficients with those in $\mathcal{N}$=4 Super Yang-Mills plasma. It is observed that the curvature-squared corrections influence the Langevin diffusion coefficients, and the corrections for both Langevin diffusion coefficients demonstrate the dependence on the velocity of the moving heavy quark and the specifics of the higher derivative correction. In addition, we conduct calculations for the Langevin diffusion coefficients of a moving heavy quark within the Gauss-Bonnet background.

Abstract:We study the suppressions of high transverse momentum single hadron and dihadron productions in high-energy heavy-ion collisions based on the framework of a next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD parton model combined with the higher-twist energy loss formalism. Our model can provide a consistent description for the nuclear modification factors of single hadron and dihadron productions in central and non-central nucleus–nucleus collisions at RHIC and the LHC energies. We quantitatively extract the value of jet quenching parameter $$\hat{q}$$ via a global $$\chi ^2$$ analysis, and obtain $${\hat{q}}/{T^3} = 4.1$$ –4.4 at $$T = 378$$ MeV at RHIC and $${\hat{q}}/{T^3} = 2.6$$ –3.3 at $$T = 486$$ MeV at the LHC, which are consistent with the results from JET Collaboration. We also provide the predictions for the nuclear modification factors of dihadron productions in Pb + Pb collisions at $$\sqrt{s_\mathrm{{NN}}}$$ = 5.02 TeV and in Xe + Xe collisions at $$\sqrt{s_\mathrm{{NN}}}$$ = 5.44 TeV.

Abstract:We report a new determination of (q) over cap, the jet transport coefficient of the quark-gluon plasma. We use the JETSCAPE framework, which incorporates a novel multistage theoretical approach to in-medium jet evolution and Bayesian inference for parameter extraction. The calculations, based on the MATTER and LBT jet quenching models, are compared to experimental measurements of inclusive hadron suppression in Au + Au collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Pb + Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The correlation of experimental systematic uncertainties is accounted for in the parameter extraction. The functional dependence of (q) over cap on jet energy or virtuality and medium temperature is based on a perturbative picture of in-medium scattering, with components reflecting the different regimes of applicability of MATTER and LBT. In the multistage approach, the switch between MATTER and LBT is governed by a virtuality scale Q(0). Comparison of the posterior model predictions to the RHIC and LHC hadron suppression data shows reasonable agreement, with moderate tension in limited regions of phase space. The distribution of (q) over cap /T-3 extracted from the posterior distributions exhibits weak dependence on jet momentum and medium temperature T, with 90% credible region (CR) depending on the specific choice of model configuration. The choice of MATTER+LBT, with switching at virtuality Q(0), has 90% CR of 2 < <(q)over cap>/T-3 < 4 for p(T,jet) > 40 GeV/c. The value of Q(0), determined here for the first time, is in the range 2.0-2.7 GeV.

Abstract:We study the jet quenching parameter $\hat q$ in a non-equilibrium plasma using the QCD effective kinetic theory. We discuss subleading terms at large jet momentum p, show that our expression for $\hat q$ reproduces thermal results at small and large transverse momentum cutoffs for infinite p and construct an interpolation between these limits to be used in phenomenological applications. Using simple non-equilibrium distributions that model pertinent features of the bottom-up thermalization scenario, we analytically assess how anisotropy, under- or overoccupation affect the jet quenching parameter. Our work provides more details on the $\hat q$ formula used in our preceding work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2303.12595" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.12595">arXiv:2303.12595</a>] and sets the stage for further numerical studies of jet momentum broadening in the initial stages of heavy-ion collisions from QCD kinetic theory.

Abstract:We study R-2 corrections to the holographic Schwinger effect in an AdS black hole background and a confining D3-brane background, respectively. The potential analysis for these backgrounds is presented. The critical values for the electric field are obtained. It is shown that for both backgrounds increasing the Gauss-Bonnet parameter the Schwinger effect is enhanced. Moreover, the results provide an estimate of how the Schwinger effect changes with the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, n/s, at strong coupling. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

An Extraction of Jet Transport Coefficient in Cold Nuclear Matter from World Data

Abstract:Within the theoretical framework of the generalized factorization of perturbative QCD, i.e., the higher-twist expansion formalism, we perform the first global analysis of the jet transport coefficient ($\hat q$) in cold nuclear matter, in which analysis we take into account the available data on various types of transverse momentum broadening in $e$A and $p$A collisions, as well as the nuclear modification of the structure functions in DIS. The global analysis suggests a universal and kinematics-dependent $\hat q=\hat q\,(x,Q^2)$ in cold nuclear matter, which would be instructive for understanding the jet quenching phenomena and the property of quark-gluon plasma in a more accurate way. Further more, utilizing the Hessian matrix, we evaluate the uncertainty of the extracted $\hat q\,(x,Q^2)$ under the constraints of the current data and generate the error evaluation sets of $\hat q\,(x,Q^2)$, with which we make preliminary predictions for the future EIC experiments at three facilities covering a wide kinematic range.

Abstract:The large p(T)-hadron suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at RHIC/LHC is studied in a NLO pQCD parton model in which the fragmentation function is modified due to jet quenching. The energy loss of the energetic parton jets is incorporated in the modified fragmentation functions which utilize two important parameters to characterize the jet transport properties, the jet transport parameter 40 and the mean free path lambda(0), both at the initial time To in the center of the fireball created in central AA collisions. We performed a phenomenological study of simultaneous chi(2)/d.o.f fits to RHIC as well as LHC data to constrain the two parameters for energetic quarks, (q) over cap 1.1 +/- 0.2 GeV2/fm and lambda(0) 0.4 +/- 0.03 fm in central Au + Au collisions at root S-NN = 200 GeV, while (q) over cap = 1.7 +/- 0.3 GeV2/fm, and lambda(0) approximate to 0.5 +/- 0.05 flu in central Pb + Pb collisions at root S-NN = 2.76 TeV. Numerical results for the best fit give a multiple scattering picture for the hard jets with a moderate averaged number of gluon emissions. Based on the best constraints for lambda(0) and To, the estimated value for the mean-squared transverse momentum broadening is moderate which implies that the hard jets go through the medium with small reflection.

Abstract:The JETSCAPE Collaboration reports a new determination of the jet transport parameter $\hat{q}$ in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) using Bayesian Inference, incorporating all available inclusive hadron and jet yield suppression data measured in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC. This multi-observable analysis extends the previously published JETSCAPE Bayesian Inference determination of $\hat{q}$, which was based solely on a selection of inclusive hadron suppression data. JETSCAPE is a modular framework incorporating detailed dynamical models of QGP formation and evolution, and jet propagation and interaction in the QGP. Virtuality-dependent partonic energy loss in the QGP is modeled as a thermalized weakly-coupled plasma, with parameters determined from Bayesian calibration using soft-sector observables. This Bayesian calibration of $\hat{q}$ utilizes Active Learning, a machine--learning approach, for efficient exploitation of computing resources. The experimental data included in this analysis span a broad range in collision energy and centrality, and in transverse momentum. In order to explore the systematic dependence of the extracted parameter posterior distributions, several different calibrations are reported, based on combined jet and hadron data; on jet or hadron data separately; and on restricted kinematic or centrality ranges of the jet and hadron data. Tension is observed in comparison of these variations, providing new insights into the physics of jet transport in the QGP and its theoretical formulation.

Partonic Critical Opalescence and Its Impact on the Jet Quenching Parameter $\hat{q}$

Abstract:Jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$ is essential for characterizing the interaction strength between jet partons and nuclear matter. Based on the quark-meson (QM) model, we develop a new framework for calculating $\hat{q}$ at finite chemical potentials, in which $\hat{q}$ is related to the spectral function of the chiral order parameter. A perturbative calculation up to the one-loop order indicates that the momentum broadening of jets is enhanced at both the high temperature and high chemical potential, and approximately proportional to the parton number density in the partonic phase. We further investigate the behavior of $\hat{q}$ in the vicinity of the critical endpoint (CEP) by coupling our calculation with a recently developed equation of state that includes a CEP in the universality class of the Ising model, from which we discover the partonic critical opalescence (PCO) -- a prominent enhancement of the momentum broadening of jets near CEP, contributed by the scatterings via the $\sigma$ exchange process. Hence, for the first time, jet quenching is connected with the search of CEP.

Abstract:Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the heavy quark potential and the jet quenching parameter in the near horizon limit of the D3-D(-1) background. The results are compared with those of conformal cases. It is shown that the presence of instantons tends to suppress the heavy quark potential and enhance the jet quenching parameter.

Abstract:Within a multiphase transport model with a string-melting scenario, the jet transport parameter $$\hat{q}$$ is extracted in Au+Au collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{NN} } $$= 200 GeV and Pb+Pb collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{NN} } $$= 2.76 TeV. The jet transport parameter $$\hat{q}$$ is a key parameter in jet-quenching phenomena, which depends not only on the temperature of the QCD medium but also on jet energy. We observe that $$\hat{q}$$ increases with increasing of the jet energy for both the partonic phase and the hadronic phase. The energy and path length dependences of $$\hat{q}$$ in full heavy-ion evolution are consistent with the expectations of jet quenching. The correlation between jet transport parameter $$\hat{q}$$ and dijet transverse momentum asymmetry $$A_J$$ is investigated. It is interesting to find that dijets with larger $$A_J$$ have larger length-averaged $$\hat{q}$$ values. Our study suggests that dijets with different $$A_J$$ values can provide versatile tools for studying jet quenching and extracting jet transport parameters.

Abstract:The quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is an exotic phase of matter, composed of deconfined quarks and gluons and is briefly created in heavy-ion collisions (HIC) at the LHC and at the RHIC. High-energy, self-collimated structures of final-state particles also created in HIC, called jets, probe the QGP, piercing through it on their way to the particle detector. Quantum field theory at finite temperature or thermal field theory, is then an extremely powerful tool, capable of analytically quantifying how such a high-energy object interacts with a weakly coupled thermal bath. In this thesis, we work towards the computation of corrections to two quantities, which dictate how jets are quenched by the QGP. The first being the transverse momentum broadening coefficient, which describes how the jet diffuses in transverse momentum space through its interaction with the medium. We focus on the computation of logarithmically enhanced corrections, carefully showing how the thermal scale affects the logarithmic phase space. The second is the asymptotic mass, which can be thought of as a shift in the jet dispersion relation as it undergoes forward scattering with the medium. We complete a matching calculation, which rids the mass' classical corrections of any unphysical divergences, while also beginning the completion of its full two-loop, quantum corrections.
