Abstract:In this paper, we consider asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds endowed with a continuous metric and the metric is smooth away from a compact subset with certain conditions. If the metric is Lipschitz and the scalar curvature is nonnegative away from a closed subset with (n - 1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure zero, then we prove that the ADM mass of each end is nonnegative. Furthermore, if the ADM mass of some end is zero, then we prove that the manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space. The Hausdorff measure condition is optimal, which confirms a conjecture of Lee in 2013. The proof of the nonnegativity is based on a smoothing argument with some new estimates such as a L-1-scalar curvature approximation estimates. The proof of the rigidity relies on the RCD theory where we show that the manifold has nonnegative Ricci curvature in RCD sense. The idea involving RCD theory in the proof turns out to be much more suitable in the study of the rigidity for continuous metrics. Furthermore, our result generalizes the result of Lee and LeFloch (Commun Math Phys 339(1):99-120, 2015) from spin to non-spin.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a mass for asymptotically flat manifolds by using the Gauss–Bonnet curvature. We first prove that the mass is well-defined and is a geometric invariant, if the Gauss–Bonnet curvature is integrable and the decay order τ satisfies τ>n−43. Motivated by an elegant idea of Lam [35], we then show a positive mass theorem for this new mass for asymptotically flat graphs over Rn. Moreover we obtain various Penrose type inequalities in this case. In these Penrose type inequalities we establish relationship between the new mass and various geometric integrals.

Abstract:As an interesting application of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory and our work on the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern mass (Ge, Wang, Wu), we obtain a positive mass theorem for asymptotically flat graphs in $\R^{n+1}$ under a condition that $R+\alpha L_2$ is non-negative, where $R$ is the scalar curvature, $\alpha\in\R$ a constant and $L_2$ the second Gauss-Bonnet curvature. A Penrose type inequality is also obtained in the case $\alpha>0$.

Abstract:This is a survey about our recent works on the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern (GBC) mass for asymptotically flat and asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We first introduce the GBC mass, a higher order mass, for asymptotically flat and for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds, respectively, by using a higher order scalar curvature. Then we prove its positivity and the Penrose inequality for graphical manifolds. One of the crucial steps in the proof of the Penrose inequality is the use of an Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality, which is a classical inequality in the Euclidean space. In the hyperbolic space, we have established this new Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality. We also have a similar work for asymptotically locally hyperbolic manifolds. At the end, we discuss the relation between the GBC mass and Chern’s magic form.

Abstract:The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, by using the Gauss–Bonnet curvature, which is a natural generalization of the scalar curvature, we introduce a higher order mass, the Gauss–Bonnet–Chern mass m^ℍ_k , for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds and show that it is a geometric invariant. Moreover, we prove a positive mass theorem for this new mass for asymptotically hyperbolic graphs and establish a relationship between the corresponding Penrose type inequality for this mass and weighted Alexandrov–Fenchel inequalities in the hyperbolic space ℍ^n . In the second part, we establish these weighted Alexandrov–Fenchel inequalities in ℍ^n for any horospherical convex hypersurface Σ ∫ _Σ V σ _2k-1 dμ≥ C_n-1^2k-1ω _n-1( ( |Σ |/ω _n-1) ^n/k(n-1)+( |Σ |/ω _n-1) ^n-2k/k(n-1)) ^k, where σ _j is the j -th mean curvature of Σ⊂ℍ^n , V=cosh r and |Σ | is the area of Σ . As an application, we obtain an optimal Penrose type inequality for the new mass defined in the first part m_k^ℍ≥1/2^k( ( |Σ |/ω _n-1) ^n/k(n-1)+( |Σ |/ω _n-1) ^n-2k/k(n-1)) ^k, for asymptotically hyperbolic graphs with a horizon type boundary Σ , provided that a dominant energy type condition L̃_k≥ 0 holds. Both inequalities are optimal.

Abstract:We prove the positive mass theorem for asymptotical flat (AF for short) manifolds with finitely many isolated conical singularities. We do not impose the spin condition. Instead we use the conformal blow up technique which dates back to Schoen's final resolution of the Yamabe conjecture.

Abstract:In this note, we use Chern’s magic form $\Phi _k$ in his famous proof of the Gauss–Bonnet theorem to define a mass for asymptotically flat manifolds. It turns out that the new defined mass is equivalent to the one that we introduced recently by using the Gauss–Bonnet–Chern curvature $L_k$. Moreover, this equivalence implies a simple proof of the equivalence between the ADM mass and the intrinsically defined mass via the Ricci tensor, which was reconsidered by Miao–Tam (Proc Am Math Soc 144:753–761, 2016) and Herzlich (Ann Henri Poincaré 17(12):3605–3617, 2016) very recently.
Some variants of discrete positive mass theorems on graphs

Abstract:Inspired by asymptotically flat manifolds, we introduce the concept of asymptotically flat graphs and define the discrete ADM mass on them. We formulate the discrete positive mass conjecture based on the scalar curvature in the sense of Ollivier curvature, and prove the positive mass theorem for asymptotically flat graphs that are combinatorially isomorphic to grid graphs. As a corollary, the discrete torus does not admit positive scalar curvature. We prove a weaker version of the positive mass conjecture: an asymptotically flat graph with non-negative Ricci curvature is isomorphic to the standard grid graph. Hence the combinatorial structure of an asymptotically flat graph is determined by the curvature condition, which is a discrete analog of the rigidity part for the positive mass theorem. The key tool for the proof is the discrete harmonic function of linear growth associated with the salami structure.

Abstract:There has been a lot of interests in Positive Mass Theorems for singular metrics on smooth manifolds. We prove a positive mass theorem for asymptotically flat (AF) spin manifolds with isolated conical singularities or more generally horn singularities. In particular, we allow topological singularities in the space as we do not require the cross sections of the conical singularity to be spherical. Note that the negative mass Schwarzschild metric is AF with a horn singularity.

Abstract: Motivated by the recent progress on positive mass theorem for asymptotically flat manifolds with arbitrary ends and the Gromov's definition of scalar curvature lower bound for continuous metrics, we start a program on the positive mass theorem for asymptotically flat manifolds with $C^0$ arbitrary ends. In this work as the first step, we establish the positive mass theorem of asymptotically flat manifolds with $C^0$ arbitrary ends when the metric is $W^{1,p}_{\mathrm{loc}}$ for some $p\in(n,\infty]$ and is smooth away from a non-compact closed subset with Hausdorff dimension $n-\frac{p}{p-1}$. New techniques are developed to deal with non-compactness of the singular set.

Abstract:A classic result of Shi and Tam states that a 2-sphere of positive Gauss and mean curvature bounding a compact 3-manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature, must have total mean curvature not greater than that of the isometric embedding into Euclidean 3-space, with equality only for domains in this reference manifold. We generalize this result to 2-tori of Guass curvature greater than $-1$, which bound a compact 3-manifold having scalar curvature not less than $-6$ and at least one other boundary component satisfying a 'trapping condition'. The conclusion is that the total weighted mean curvature is not greater than that of an isometric embedding into the Kottler manifold, with equality only for domains in this space. Examples are given to show that the assumption of a secondary boundary component cannot be removed. The result gives a positive mass theorem for the static Brown-York mass of tori, in analogy to the Shi-Tam positivity of the standard Brown-York mass, and represents the first such quasi-local mass positivity result for non-spherical surfaces. Furthermore, we prove a Penrose-type inequality in this setting.

Abstract:We prove a Riemannian positive mass theorem for manifolds with a single asymptotically flat end, but otherwise arbitrary other ends, which can be incomplete and contain negative scalar curvature. The incompleteness and negativity is compensated for by large positive scalar curvature on an annulus, in a quantitative fashion. In the complete noncompact case with nonnegative scalar curvature, we have no extra assumption and hence prove a long-standing conjecture of Schoen and Yau.

Abstract:In this paper, a new proof of the Positive Mass Theorem is established through a newly discovered monotonicity formula, holding along the level sets of the Green's function of an asymptotically flat 3-manifolds. In the same context and for $1<p<3$ , a Geroch-type calculation is performed along the level sets of p -harmonic functions, leading to a new proof of the Riemannian Penrose Inequality under favourable assumptions. Abstract:We deal with suitable nonlinear versions of Jauregui's isocapacitary mass in 3-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature and compact outermost minimal boundary. These masses, which depend on a parameter $1<p\leq 2$, interpolate between Jauregui's mass $p=2$ and Huisken's isoperimetric mass, as $p \to 1^+$. We derive positive mass theorems for these masses under mild conditions at infinity, and we show that these masses do coincide with the ADM mass when the latter is defined. We finally work out a nonlinear potential theoretic proof of the Penrose inequality in the optimal asymptotic regime.

Abstract: In this paper, we prove for $n\leq 7$ that if a differentiable $n$-manifold contains a relatively incompressible essential hypersurface in some class $\mathcal C_{deg}$, then it admits no complete metric with positive scalar curvature. Based on this result, we show for $n\leq 7$ that surgeries between orientable $n$-manifolds and $n$-torus along incompressible sub-torus with codimension no less than $2$ still preserve the obstruction for complete metrics with positive scalar curvature. As an application, we establish positive mass theorem with incompressible conditions for asymptotically flat/conical manifolds with flat fiber $F$ (including ALF and ALG manifolds), which can be viewed as a generalization of the classical positive mass theorem from \cite{SY79PMT} and \cite{SY2017}. Finally, we investigate Gromov's fill-in problem and bound the total mean curvature for nonnegative scalar curvature fill-ins of flat $2$-toruses (an optimal bound is obtained for product $2$-toruses). This confirms the validity of Mantoulidis-Miao's definition of generalized Brown-York mass in \cite{MM2017} for flat $2$-toruses.
