Abstract:An $n\times n$ matrix is said to have a self-interlacing spectrum if its eigenvalues $\lambda_k$, $k=1,\ldots,n$, are distributed as follows: $$ \lambda_1>-\lambda_2>\lambda_3>\cdots>(-1)^{n-1}\lambda_n>0. $$ A method for constructing sign definite matrices with self-interlacing spectrum from totally nonnegative ones is presented. This method is applied to bidiagonal and tridiagonal matrices. In particular, a result by O. Holtz on the spectrum of real symmetric anti-bidiagonal matrices with positive nonzero entries is generalized.

Abstract:We consider some conjectures of D. Hershkowitz and A. Berman in concerning the localization of eigenvalues of P- and P0-matrices. We show that two of these conjectures are false. We improve a classical formula of Routh's to prove our results. Also we reconsider a theorem of Kellogg's with the generalized result.

Abstract:This work tackles the problem of spectral characterization of a class of infinite matrices arising from the modelling of small oscillations in a system of interacting particles. The class of matrices under discussion corresponds to the infinite Marchenko-Slavin class. The spectral functions of these matrices are completely characterized and an algorithm is provided for the reconstruction of the matrix from its spectral function. The techniques used in this work are based on recent results for the spectral characterization of infinite band symmetric matrices with so-called degenerations.

Abstract:The research on spectral inequalities for discrete Schrödinger operators has proved fruitful in the last decade. Indeed, several authors analysed the operator’s canonical relation to a tridiagonal Jacobi matrix operator. In this paper, we consider a generalisation of this relation with regard to connecting higher order Schrödinger-type operators with symmetric matrix operators with arbitrarily many nonzero diagonals above and below the main diagonal. We thus obtain spectral bounds for such matrices, similar in nature to the Lieb-Thirring inequalities.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a method to characterize graphs determined by their adjacency spectrum. At first, we give two parameters Π1(G) and Π2(G), which are related to coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of graph G. All connected graphs with Π1(G)∈{1,0,−1,−2,−3} and Π2(G)∈{0,−1,−2,−3} are characterized. Some interesting properties of Π1(G) and Π2(G) are also given. We then find the necessary and sufficient conditions for two classes of graphs to be determined by their adjacency spectrum.
A Dynamical System Approach To The Inverse Spectral Problem For Hankel Operators: The General Case

Abstract:We study the inverse problem for the Hankel operators in the general case. Following the work of Gérard--Grellier, the spectral data is obtained from the pair of Hankel operators $\Gamma$ and $\Gamma S$, where $S$ is the shift operator. The theory of complex symmetric operators provides a convenient language for the description of the spectral data. We introduce the abstract spectral data for the general case, and use the dynamical system approach, to reduce the problem to asymptotic stability of some contraction, constructed from the spectral data. The asymptotic stability is usually the hard part of the problem, but in the investigated earlier by Gérard--Grellier case of compact operators we get it almost for free. For the case of compact operators we get a concrete representation of the abstract spectral data as two intertwining sequences of singular values, and two sequences of finitely supported probability measures. This representation is different from one treated by Gérard--Grellier, and we provide the translation from one language to the other; theory of Clark measures is instrumental there.

Abstract:It is well-known that characters classify linear representations of finite groups, that is if characters of two representations of a finite group are the same, these representations are equivalent. It is also well-known that, in general, this is not true for representations of infinite groups, even if they are finitely generated. The goal of this paper is to establish a characterization of representations of finitely generated groups in terms of projective joint spectra. This approach has a clear advantage compared to character classification as it is valid for a much wider family of groups and for both finite and infinite dimensional representations. The main tool in establishing our spectral characterization is a reconstruction of an operator acting on a separable Hilbert space from the proper projective joint spectrum of the quadruple containing this operator along with a certain triple of bounded operators acting on the same space.

Abstract:We study a spectral problem related to finite-dimensional characters of the groups , and , which form the classical series , and , respectively. Irreducible characters of these three series are given by -variate symmetric polynomials. The spectral problem in question consists in the decomposition of characters after their restriction to subgroups of the same type but smaller rank . The main result of the paper is the derivation of explicit determinantal formulae for the coefficients of the expansion. In fact, first we compute these coefficients in greater generality - for the multivariate symmetric Jacobi polynomials depending on two continuous parameters. Next, we show that the formulae are drastically simplified in the three special cases of Jacobi polynomials corresponding to characters of the series , and . In particular, we show that then these coefficients are given by piecewise polynomial functions. This is where a link with discrete splines arises. For characters of the series (that is, of the unitary groups ) similar results were obtained previously by Borodin and this author [5], and then reproved by Petrov [39] by another method. The case of symplectic and orthogonal characters is more intricate. Bibliography: 58 titles.

Abstract:Let $S_n(mathbb{Z})$ and $O_n(mathbb{Q})$ denote the set of all $ntimes n$ symmetric matrices over the ring of integers $mathbb{Z}$ and the set of all $ntimes n$ orthogonal matrices over the field of rational numbers $mathbb{Q}$, respectively. The paper is mainly concerned with the following problem: Given a matrix $Ain {S_n(mathbb{Z})}$. How can one find all rational orthogonal matrices $Qin{O_n(mathbb{Q})}$ such that $Q^TAQin {S_n(mathbb{Z})}$, and in particular, when does $Q^TAQin {S_n(mathbb{Z})}$ with $Qin{O_n(mathbb{Q})}$ imply that $Q$ is emph{a signed permutation matrix} (i.e., the matrix obtained from a permutation matrix $P$ by replacing each 1 in $P$ with 1 or $-1$)? A surprisingly simple answer was given in terms of whether the discriminant of the characteristic polynomial of $A$ is odd and square-free, which partially answers the above questions. More precisely, let $Delta_A=pm res(phi,phiu0027)$ be emph{the discriminant of matrix $A$}, where $res(phi,phiu0027)$ is emph{the resultant} of the characteristic polynomial $phi$ of $A$ and its derivative $phiu0027$. We show that if $Delta_A$ is odd and square-free, then $Q^TAQin {S_n(mathbb{Z})}$ with $Qin{O_n(mathbb{Q})}$ implies that $Q$ is a signed permutation matrix. As an application, we present a simple and efficient method for testing whether a graph is determined by the generalized spectrum, which significantly extends our previous work.

Abstract:Sylvester–Kac matrices are tridiagonal integral matrices with integral spectra or with eigenvalues presenting some kind of regularity. Recently, several results have emerged independently in the literature with spectra having some type of quadratic form. In this note, we review those main results. Using a lower triangular matrix based on the Pascal's triangle, we present an alternative unified approach to them. Ultimately, we provide a simple proof for Sylvester's determinant claim. A comprehensive list of the major historical advances and generalizations, as well as the most recent contributions, is provided at the end.

Abstract:The spectral properties of a class of tridiagonal matrices are investigated. The reconstruction of matrices of this special class from given spectral data is also studied. Necessary and sufficient conditions for that reconstruction are found. The obtained results extend some results on the direct and inverse spectral problems for periodic Jacobi matrices and for some non-self-adjoint tridiagonal matrices.

Abstract:Generalized indefinite strings provide a canonical model for self-adjoint operators with simple spectrum (other classical models are Jacobi matrices, Krein strings and 2x2 canonical systems). We prove a number of Szegő-type theorems for generalized indefinite strings and related spectral problems (including Krein strings, canonical systems and Dirac operators). More specifically, for several classes of coefficients (that can be regarded as Hilbert-Schmidt perturbations of model problems), we provide a complete characterization of the corresponding set of spectral measures. In particular, our results also apply to the isospectral Lax operator for the conservative Camassa-Holm flow and allow us to establish existence of global weak solutions with various step-like initial conditions of low regularity via the inverse spectral transform.

Abstract:We revisit the symplectic aspects of the spectral transform for matrix-valued rational functions with simple poles. We construct eigenvectors of such matrices in terms of the Szegő kernel on the spectral curve. Using variational formulas for the Szegő kernel we construct a new system of action-angle variables for the canonical symplectic form on the space of such functions. Comparison with previously known action-angle variables shows that the vector of Riemann constants is the gradient of some function on the moduli space of spectral curves; this function is found in the case of matrix dimension 2, when the spectral curve is hyperelliptic.

Abstract:We extend some classical theorems in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle to the matrix case. In particular, we prove a matrix analogue of Szegő’s theorem. As a by-product, we also obtain an elementary proof of the distance formula by Helson and Lowdenslager.

Abstract:Sparse non-Hermitian random matrices arise in the study of disordered physical systems with asymmetric local interactions, and have applications ranging from neural networks to ecosystem dynamics. The spectral characteristics of these matrices provide crucial information on system stability and susceptibility, however, their study is greatly complicated by the twin challenges of a lack of symmetry and a sparse interaction structure. In this review we provide a concise and systematic introduction to the main tools and results in this field. We show how the spectra of sparse non-Hermitian matrices can be computed via an analogy with infinite dimensional operators obeying certain recursion relations. With reference to three illustrative examples -- adjacency matrices of regular oriented graphs, adjacency matrices of oriented Erdős-Rényi graphs, and adjacency matrices of weighted oriented Erdős-Rényi graphs -- we demonstrate the use of these methods to obtain both analytic and numerical results for the spectrum, the spectral distribution, the location of outlier eigenvalues, and the statistical properties of eigenvectors.

Abstract:In this paper, we give the Gershgorin's theorem of the 2 × 2 unbounded block operator matrix with bounded off-diagonal entries, and use the spectrum and the numerical range of diagonal entries to investigatethe spectral inclusion properties of some unbounded block operator matrices. In particular, for unbounded block operator matrices with symmetric (anti-symmetric) corners, we give more exact localization of spectrum by the quadratic numerical range and the Gershgorin's theorem.

Abstract:In this paper we prove and apply a theorem of spectral expansion for Schwartz linear operators which have an S-linearly independent Schwartz eigenfamily. This type of spectral expansion is the analogous of the spectral expansion for self-adjoint operators of separable Hilbert spaces, but in the case of eigenfamilies of vectors indexed by the real Euclidean spaces. The theorem appears formally identical to the spectral expansion in the finite dimensional case, but for the presence of continuous superpositions instead of finite sums. The Schwartz expansion we present is one possible rigorous and simply manageable mathematical model for the spectral expansions used frequently in Quantum Mechanics, since it appears in a form extremely similar to the current formulations in Physics.
