Abstract:This paper addresses weak approximation for rationally connected varieties defined over the function field of a curve, especially at places of bad reduction. Our approach entails analyzing the rational connectivity of the smooth locus of singular reductions of the variety. As an application, we prove weak approximation for cubic surfaces with square-free discriminant.

Abstract:We study weak approximation for Châtelet surfaces over number fields when all singular fibers are defined over rational points. We consider Châtelet surfaces which satisfy weak approximation over every finite extension of the ground field. We prove many of these results by showing that the Brauer–Manin obstruction vanishes, then apply results of Colliot-Thélène, Sansuc, and Swinnerton-Dyer.

Reciprocity obstruction to strong approximation over p-adic function fields

Abstract:Over function fields of p-adic curves, we construct stably rational varieties in the form of homogeneous spaces of SL_n with semisimple simply connected stabilizers and we show that strong approximation away from a non-empty set of places fails for such varieties. The construction combines the Lichtenbaum duality and the degree 3 cohomological invariants of the stabilizers. We then establish a reciprocity obstruction which accounts for this failure of strong approximation. We show that this reciprocity obstruction to strong approximation is the only one for counterexamples we constructed, and also for classifying varieties of tori. We also show that this reciprocity obstruction to strong approximation is compatible with known results for tori. At the end, we explain how a similar point of view shows that the reciprocity obstruction to weak approximation is the only one for classifying varieties of tori over p-adic function fields.

Abstract:We formulate the equivalence problem, in the sense of E. Cartan, for families of minimal rational curves on uniruled projective manifolds. An important invariant of this equivalence problem is the variety of minimal rational tangents. We study the case when varieties of minimal rational tangents at general points form an isotrivial family. The main question in this case is for which projective variety $Z$, a family of minimal rational curves with $Z$-isotrivial varieties of minimal rational tangents is locally equivalent to the flat model. We show that this is the case when $Z$ satisfies certain projective-geometric conditions, which hold for a non-singular hypersurface of degree $\geq 4$.

Abstract:For a smooth curve B over a field k = (k) over bar with char(k) = p, for every complete intersection X-B in B x(Speck) P-k(n) of type (d(1), ..., d(c)), we prove weak approximation of adelic points of X-B by k(B)-points at all places of (strong) potentially good reduction, if the Fano index is >= 2 and if p > max(d(1 ),..., d(c)). This also applies to specializations of complex Fano manifolds with Picard rank 1 and Fano index 1 away from "bad primes".

Abstract:For any abelian group , we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of -extensions of bounded discriminant such that the associated norm one torus satisfies weak approximation. We are also able to produce new results on the Hasse norm principle and to provide new explicit values for the leading constant in some instances of Malle's conjecture.

Abstract:We prove some triviality results for reduced Whitehead groups and reduced unitary Whitehead groups for division algebras over a henselian discrete valuation field whose residue field has virtual cohomological dimension or separable dimension $\le 2$. These results are applied to show strong approximation for isotropic absolutely almost simple simply connected groups of type A. In particular, such a group defined over the function field of a nonreal curve $C/k$ satisfies strong approximation if the base field $k$ is a number field, a $p$-adic field, $\mathbb{C}(\!(t)\!)$ or a two-variable function field over $\mathbb{R}$.

Abstract:We extend some parts of the representation theory for integral quadratic forms over the ring of integers of a number field to the case over the coordinate ring $k[C]$ of an affine curve $C$ over a general base field $k$. By using the genus theory, we link the strong approximation property of certain spin groups to the Hasse principle for representations of integral quadratic forms over $k[C]$ and derive several applications. In particular, we give an example where a spin group does not satisfy strong approximation.

Abstract:For varieties over global fields, weak approximation in the space of adelic points can fail. For a subvariety of an abelian variety one expects this failure is always explained by a finite descent obstruction, in the sense that the rational points should be dense in the set of (modified) adelic points surviving finite descent. We show that this follows from the a priori weaker assumption that finite descent is the only obstruction to the existence of rational points. We also prove a similar statement for the obstruction coming from the Mordell-Weil sieve.

Abstract:We derive asymptotic formulas for the number of rational points on a smooth projective quadratic hypersurface of dimension at least three inside of a shrinking adelic open neighbourhood. This is a quantitative version of weak approximation for quadrics and allows us to deduce the best growth rate of the size of such an adelic neighbourhood for which equidistribution is preserved.

Reocurrence and weak approximation over geometric global fields

Abstract:In this article, we prove a Reocurrence Theorem over function fields of curves over $\mathbf{C}(\! (t)\! )$ and over finite extensions of the Laurent series field $\mathbf{C}(\! (x,y)\! )$. This provides a partial replacement to Chebotarev's Theorem over such fields. A concrete application to the study of weak approximation for homogeneous spaces under $\mathrm{SL}_n$ and with finite stabilizers is given at the end of the article.

Abstract: Determination of quasi-invariant generalized functions is important for a variety of problems in representation theory, notably character theory and restriction problems. In this note, we review some new and easy-to-use techniques to show vanishing of quasi-invariant generalized functions, developed in the recent work of the authors (Uniqueness of Ginzburg-Rallis models: the Archimedean case, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 363, (2011), 2763-2802). The first two techniques involve geometric notions attached to submanifolds, which we call metrical properness and unipotent $\chi$-incompatibility. The third one is analytic in nature, and it arises from the first occurrence phenomenon in Howe correspondence. We also highlight how these techniques quickly lead to two well-known uniqueness results, on trilinear forms and Whittaker models.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective algebraic variety over a number field $k$ and $P$ in $X(k)$. In 2007, the second author conjectured that, in a precise sense, if rational points on $X$ are dense enough, then the best rational approximations to $P$ must lie on a curve. We present a strategy for deducing a slightly weaker conjecture from Vojta's conjecture, and execute this strategy for the full conjecture for split surfaces.

For any nontrivial extension [math], assuming a conjecture of M. Stoll, we prove that there exists a [math]-threefold satisfying weak approximation with Brauer–Manin obstruction off all archimedean places, while its base change to [math] fails. Then we illustrate this construction with an explicit unconditional example.

Abstract:We show that for every countable group, any sequence of approximate homomorphisms with values in permutations can be realized as the restriction of a sofic approximation of an orbit equivalence relation. Moreover, this orbit equivalence relation is uniquely determined by the invariant random subgroup of the approximate homomorphisms. We record applications of this result to recover various known stability and conjugacy characterizations for almost homomorphisms of amenable groups.
