Abstract:We present a comprehensive theoretical description of quantum well exciton-polaritons imbedded in a planar semiconductor microcavity. The exact non-local dielectric response of the quantum well exciton is treated in detail. The 4-spinor structure of the hole subband in the quantum well is considered, including the pronounced band mixing effect. The scheme is self-contained and can be used to treat different semiclassical aspects of the microcavity properties. As an example, we analyze the "selection" rules for the exciton-cavity mode coupling for different excitons.

Abstract:Exciton-polaritons are half-light, half-matter bosonic quasiparticles formed by strong exciton-photon coupling in semiconductor microcavities. These hybrid particles possess the strong nonlinear interactions of excitons and keep most of the characteristics of the underlying photons. As bosons, above a threshold density they can undergo Bose-Einstein condensation to a polariton condensate phase and exhibit a rich variety of exotic macroscopic quantum phenomena in solids. Recently, organic semiconductors have been considered as a promising material platform for these studies due to their room-temperature stability, good processability, and abundant photophysics and photochemistry. Herein, recent advances of exciton-polaritons and their Bose-Einstein condensates in organic semiconductor microcavities are summarized. First, the basic physics is introduced, and then their emerging applications are highlighted. The remaining questions are also discussed and a personal viewpoint about the potential directions for future research is given.

Abstract:Magnon-polaritons are hybrid light-matter quasiparticles originating from the strong coupling between magnons and photons. They have emerged as a potential candidate for implementing quantum transducers and memories. Owing to the dampings of both photons and magnons, the polaritons have limited lifetimes. However, stationary magnon-polariton states can be reached by a dynamical balance between pumping and losses, so the intrinsically nonequilibrium system may be described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Here we design a tunable cavity quantum electrodynamics system with a small ferromagnetic sphere in a microwave cavity and engineer the dissipations of photons and magnons to create cavity magnon-polaritons which have non-Hermitian spectral degeneracies. By tuning the magnon-photon coupling strength, we observe the polaritonic coherent perfect absorption and demonstrate the phase transition at the exceptional point. Our experiment offers a novel macroscopic quantum platform to explore the non-Hermitian physics of the cavity magnon-polaritons.

Abstract:Organic microcavities are photonic nanostructures that strongly confine the electromagnetic field, allowing exotic quantum regimes of light-matter interaction with disordered organic semiconductors. The unambiguous interpretation of the spectra of organic microcavities has been a long-standing challenge due to several competing effects involving electrons, vibrations and cavity photons. Here we present a theoretical framework that is able to describe the main spectroscopic features of organic microcavities consistently. We introduce a class of light-matter excitations called dark vibronic polaritons, which strongly emit but only weakly absorb light in the same frequency region of the bare electronic transition. Successful comparison with experimental data demonstrates the applicability of our theory. The proposed microscopic understanding of organic microcavities paves the way for the development of optoelectronic devices enhanced by quantum optics.

Abstract:We study the magnetoexciton polaritons in planar semiconductors microcavities by a quantum approach developed in the strong and weak magnetic-field limits. Ht is shown that the vacuum Rabi splittings with different Landau level indices are close to each other and tend to be proportional to B at sufficiently large values of the magnetic field. Also, we show that the calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental observations. [S0163-1829(99)10215-7].

Abstract:Exciton-polariton propagation in a quantum well, under centre-of-mass quantization, is computed by a variational self-consistent microscopic theory. The Wannier exciton envelope functions basis set is given by the simple analytical model of ref. [1], based on pure states of the centre-of-mass wave vector, free from fitting parameters and "ad hoc" (the so called additional boundary conditions-ABCs) assumptions. In the present paper, the former analytical model is implemented in order to reproduce the centre-of-mass quantization in a large range of quantum well thicknesses (5a_B < L < inf.). The role of the dynamical transition layer at the well/barrier interfaces is discussed at variance of the classical Pekar's dead-layer and ABCs. The Wannier exciton eigenstates are computed, and compared with various theoretical models with different degrees of accuracy. Exciton-polariton transmission spectra in large quantum wells (L>> a_B) are computed and compared with experimental results of Schneider et al.\cite{Schneider} in high quality GaAs samples. The sound agreement between theory and experiment allows to unambiguously assign the exciton-polariton dips of the transmission spectrum to the pure states of the Wannier exciton center-of-mass quantization.

Abstract:Here, we explore the quantum propagation of exciton polaritons in semiconductor microcavities, exhibiting intriguing effects such as interactions, decay, and disorder scatterings. Our investigation uncovers anomalies in their quantum propagation, deviating from predictions based on existing theories. By applying scaling theory, we elucidate the true nature of exciton polariton propagation, unveiling a localization phase that characteristically differs from Anderson localization. Our numerical results agree with the self-consistent theory developed for exciton polariton condensates, incorporating non-linearity and finite lifetime.

Absorption and Photoluminescence in Organic Cavity QED

Abstract:Organic microcavities can be engineered to reach exotic quantum regimes of strong and ultrastrong light-matter coupling. However, the microscopic interpretation of their spectroscopic signals can be challenging due to the competition between coherent and dissipative processes involving electrons, vibrations and cavity photons. We develop here a theoretical framework based on the Holstein-Tavis-Cummings model and a Markovian treatment of dissipation to account for previously unexplained spectroscopic features of organic microcavities consistently. We identify conditions for the formation of dark vibronic polaritons, a new class of light-matter excitations that are not visible in absorption but lead to strong photoluminescence lines. We show that photon leakage from dark vibronic polaritons can be responsible for enhancing photoluminescence at the lower polariton frequency, and also explain the apparent breakdown of reciprocity between absorption and emission in the vicinity of the bare molecular transition frequency. Successful comparison with experimental data demonstrates the applicability of our theory.

Linear optical properties of organic microcavity polaritons with non-Markovian Quantum State Diffusion

Abstract:Hybridisation of the cavity modes and the excitons to polariton states together with the coupling to the vibrational modes determine the linear optical properties of organic semiconductors in microcavities. In this article we compute the refractive index for such system using the Holstein-Tavis-Cummings model and determine then the linear optical properties using the transfer matrix method. We first extract the parameters for the exciton in our model from fitting to experimentally measured absorption of a 2,7-bis [9,9-di(4-methylphenyl)-fluoren-2-yl]-9,9-di(4-methylphenyl) fluorene (TDAF) molecular thin film. Then we compute the reflectivity of such a thin film in a metal clad microcavity system by including the dispersive microcavity mode to the model. We compute susceptibility of the model systems evolving just a single state vector by using the non-Markovian Quantum State Diffusion. The computed location and height of the lower and upper polaritons agree with the experiment within the estimated errorbars for small angles ($\leq 30^\circ$). For larger angles the location of the polariton resonances are within the estimated error.

Abstract:We first present a formalism that incorporates the input-output formalism and the linear response theory to employ cavity-magnon-polariton coupling as a spectroscopic tool for investigating strongly hybridized electro-nuclear spin excitations. A microscopic relation between the generalized susceptibility and the scattering parameter in strongly hybridized cavity-magnon-polariton systems has been derived without resorting to semi-classical approximations. The formalism is then applied to both analyze and simulate a specific systems comprising a model quantum Ising magnet ( ) and a high-finesse 3D re-entrant cavity resonator. Quantitative information on the electro-nuclear spin states in is extracted, and the experimental observations across a broad parameter range were numerically reproduced, including an external magnetic field traversing a quantum critical point. The method potentially opens a new avenue not only for further studies on the quantum phase transition in but also for a wide range of complex magnetic systems.

Abstract:In the present work we discuss resonant hybridization of the $1S$ quadrupole Wannier-Mott exciton (WE) in a $Cu_2O$ quantum well with the Frenkel (FE) dipole exciton in an adjacent layer of organic DCM2:CA:PA. The coupling between excitons is due to interaction between the gradient of electric field induced by DCM2 Frenkel exciton and the quadrupole moment of the $1S$ transition in the cuprous oxide. The specific choice of the organic allows us to use the mechanism of 'solid state solvation' to dynamically tune the WE and FE into resonance during time $\approx 3.3 \: ns$ (comparable with the big life time of the WE) of the 'slow' phase of the solvation. The quadrupole-dipole hybrid utilizes the big oscillator strength of the FE along with the big lifetime of the quadrupole exciton, unlike dipole-dipole hybrid exciton which utilizes big oscillator strength of the FE and big radius of the dipole allowed WE. Due to strong spatial dispersion and big mass of the quadrupole WE the hybridization is not masked by the kinetic energy or the radiative broadening. The lower branch of the hybrid dispersion exhibits a pronounced minimum and may be used in applications. Also we investigate and report noticeable change in the coupling due to a induced 'Stark effect' from the strong local electric field of the FE. We investigated the fine energy structure of the quantum well confined ortho and para excitons in cuprous oxide.

Abstract:Exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities generate fascinating effects such as long-range spatial coherence and Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC), which are attractive for their potential use in low threshold lasers, vortices and slowing light, etc. However, currently most of exciton-polariton effects either occur at cryogenic temperature or rely on expensive cavity fabrication procedures. Further exploring new semiconductor microcavities with stronger exciton photon interaction strength is extensively needed. Herein, we demonstrate room temperature photon exciton strong coupling in hybrid inorganic-organic CH3NH3PbBr3 Fabry-Pérot microcavities for the first time. The vacuum Rabi splitting energy is up to ~390 meV, which is ascribed to large oscillator strength and photon confinement in reduced dimension of optical microcavities. With increasing pumping energy, exciton-photon coupling strength is weakened due to carrier screening effect, leading to occurrence of photonic lasing instead of polartion lasing. The demonstrated strong coupling between photons and excitons in perovskite microcavities would be helpful for development of high performance polariton-based incoherent and coherent light sources, nonlinear optics, and slow light applications.

Abstract:We study a hybrid semiconductor-optomechanical system, which consists of a cavity with an oscillating mirror made by semiconducting materials or with a semiconducting membrane inside. The cavity photons and the excitons in the semiconducting oscillating mirror or membrane form into polaritons. Thus, the optomechanical interaction between the cavity photons and the mirror or membrane is changed into the polariton-mechanical interaction. We theoretically study the eigenvalues and eigenstates of this tripartite system with the generalized rotating-wave approximation. We show the mechanical-resonator-modulated emission spectra of polariton modes. We also analyze the mechanical effect on the statistical properties of the polariton when the cavity is driven by a weak classical field. This work provides a detailed description of the rich nonlinearity, which is resulted from the competition between parametric coupling and three-wave mixing interaction concerning the polariton modes and the phonon mode. It also offers a way to operate the photons, phonons, and excitons in the integrated semiconducting-optomechanical platform.
Electrically tunable organic-inorganic hybrid polaritons with monolayer WS2

Abstract:Exciton-polaritons are quasiparticles consisting of a linear superposition of photonic and excitonic states, offering potential for nonlinear optical devices. The excitonic component of the polariton provides a finite Coulomb scattering cross section, such that the different types of exciton found in organic materials (Frenkel) and inorganic materials (Wannier-Mott) produce polaritons with different interparticle interaction strength. A hybrid polariton state with distinct excitons provides a potential technological route towards in-situ control of nonlinear behaviour. Here we demonstrate a device in which hybrid polaritons are displayed at ambient temperatures, the excitonic component of which is part Frenkel and part Wannier-Mott, and in which the dominant exciton type can be switched with an applied voltage. The device consists of an open microcavity containing both organic dye and a monolayer of the transition metal dichalcogenide WS$_2$. Our findings offer a perspective for electrically controlled nonlinear polariton devices at room temperature.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) organic inorganic perovskite semiconductors with natural multiquantum well structures and confined 2D excitons are intriguing for the study of strong exciton photon coupling, due to their large exciton binding energy and oscillation strength. This strong coupling leads to a formation of the half-light half-matter bosonic quasiparticle called exciton polariton, consisting of a linear superposition state between photonic and excitonic states. Here, we demonstrate room temperature strong coupling in exfoliated wavelength-tunable 2D organic inorganic perovskite semiconductors embedded into a planar microcavity, exhibiting large energetic splitting-to-line width ratios (>34.2). Angular dependent spectroscopy measurements reveal that hybridized polariton states act as an ultrafast and reversible energy oscillation, involving 2D perovskite exciton, cavity modes (CM), and Bragg modes of the distributed Bragg reflector. Meanwhile, sizable hybrid particles dominantly couple to the measured optical field through the CMs. Our findings advocate a considerable promise of 2D organic inorganic perovskite to explore fundamental quantum phenomena such as Bose Einstein condensation, superfluidity, and exciton polariton networks.
Quantum Dynamics Simulations of the Polariton Transport Process

Abstract:Recent experiments have shown that the transport of excitons in organic semiconductors can be significantly enhanced through hybridization with confined photonic modes in a cavity, thereby forming molecular exciton-polaritons (EP). Dissipative mechanisms that affect the constituent states of EPs, such as exciton-phonon coupling and cavity loss, have been observed to diminish their effective velocities in experiments. To elucidate the impacts of these dissipative mechanisms on the transport characteristics of molecular EPs, we develop an efficient quantum dynamics simulation approach that allows us to directly simulate polariton transport dynamics under the collective coupling regime and beyond long-wavelength approximation. Our numerical results suggest a renormalization of the group velocities with stronger exciton-phonon coupling strengths and smaller Q-factor, in agreement with existing polariton transport experiments. Additionally, we observe the transition from ballistic to diffusive EP propagation, as well as the quality factor-dependent behavior of the transient mean square displacement, agreeing well with the recent experimental measurements.

Microscopic description of exciton-polaritons in microcavities

Abstract:We investigate the microscopic description of exciton-polaritons that involves electrons, holes and photons within a two-dimensional microcavity. We show that in order to recover the simplified exciton-photon model that is typically used to describe polaritons, one must correctly define the exciton-photon detuning and exciton-photon (Rabi) coupling in terms of the bare microscopic parameters. For the case of unscreened Coulomb interactions, we find that the exciton-photon detuning is strongly shifted from its bare value in a manner akin to renormalization in quantum electrodynamics. Within the renormalized theory, we exactly solve the problem of a single exciton-polariton for the first time and obtain the full spectral response of the microcavity. In particular, we find that the electron-hole wave function of the polariton can be significantly modified by the very strong Rabi couplings achieved in current experiments. Our microscopic approach furthermore allows us to obtain the effective interaction between identical polaritons for any light-matter coupling. Crucially, we show that the standard treatment of polariton-polariton interactions in the very strong coupling regime is incorrect, since it neglects the light-induced modification of the exciton size and thus greatly overestimates the effect of Pauli exclusion on the Rabi coupling, i.e., the saturation of exciton oscillator strength. Our findings thus provide the foundations for understanding and characterizing exciton-polariton systems across the whole range of polariton densities.
