Abstract:It is important to consider machine–block interaction when assessing the stability of tunnels excavated by tunnel boring machine (TBM) in blocky rock mass as the behavior of rock blocks changes with TBM progression. The cutterhead motion (advancement and rotation) alters the geometry of rock blocks and the cutters acting on the block. As a consequence, the contact forces between the cutterhead and rock blocks change, which leads to the variation of block kinematics and stability. This paper extends the traditional block theory to analyze the life-cycle behavioristics (morphology, mechanics, kinematics and stability) of rock blocks during TBM tunneling considering TBM–block interaction. The morphology analysis follows the traditional block theory but considers TBM–block interaction. The cutterhead–block interaction is decomposed into a normal component and a tangential component, both of which depend on cutterhead motion. The removability conditions and mechanical equations for three traditional translational modes and two rotational modes are derived, based on which the kinematics and stability of rock blocks during TBM tunneling can be determined. Implementation of the proposed methodologies in reflecting the dynamic evolution of block behavioristics in the process of TBM tunneling is demonstrated through a generic example.

Abstract:Interaction between TBM and the surrounding rock masses is consist of the cutterhead-block interaction and shield-block interaction, leading to the stability consideration of TBM tunnels. The equilibrium equation of removable blocks is derived by taking into consideration of the interaction forces and the net sliding forces of moving modes is also deduced. For different types of blocks in terms of the new classification of blocks in TBM tunnels, sliding and falling will happen for rear blocks, while front blocks and corner blocks will only experience sliding motion.

Abstract:The West Route of the South to North Water Transfer Project is taken as the engineering background and the excavation disturbed zone in surrounding rock of tunnel by tunnel boring machine (TBM) driving are studied. Considering the rock post-yield damage, a new constitutive model based on the cohesion weakening and frictional strengthening (CWFS) brittle model is proposed and is implanted to FLAC(3D) program by debugging dll in VC++. Based on the results of triaxial compression tests, this constitutive model is verified through parameter back analyzing by optimization algorithm such as neural network and genetic algorithm. The results show that the model can reflect the elastic characteristic, post-yield characteristic, brittle failure and post-failure residual strength characteristic of slate. Based on this model, the surrounding rock deformation characteristics, stress evolution law and damage characteristic of TBM driving of the South to North Water Transfer Project are studied and also compared with the results by Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model. Finally, the conclusion is drawn that the constitutive model proposed can better reflect the damage rule of the surrounding rock daring TBM driving, i.e. the damage develops along the weak zone.

Abstract:A numerical approach for modeling progressive failure of rock mass is introduced. The stability of rock blocks of tunnel or underground opening are commonly analyzed based on rigid body limit equilibrium theory only by considering gravity, while the secondary stress field after excavation of the block is usually not taken into account. Existence of structural planes affects dynamical properties greatly in rock tunnel structures. Especially in hard rock tunnel engineering, the stability of rock is controlled in a sense by the number of blocks, i.e. the size, orientation and locations of the discontinuities. Key-block failures occur where blocks of rock which are separated form the rest of the rock mass by discontinuities slide of fall into an excavation. In the present paper, according to the geometric stochastic block theory and reliability analysis, a new program GeoSMA (Geotechnical Structure and Model Analysis) for simulating tunnel structural planes in rock mass is put forward to develop based on geometric stochastic block theory and modern computer technique. The new model assumed that rock mass consists of blocks and each block is formed by particles arranged in a specific way, thus formulating a combination of block model and particle model. This program adopts vector analysis, which can simulate all excavation planes especially in the tunnel and other underground structure. It can also create three-dimensional structural model and analyze mobility of key-block in the simulation plane by means of geometry and kinematics theory. The distribution of all key blocks and the quantitative data are analyzed by means of the newly developed program. There are some features distinguishing the approach from conventional numerical methods as FEM. It can be concluded that the new program is an effective tool for modeling blocky rock masses. The results show that parts of the blocks' crown zone are under compressive stress, which gradually increases as the underground opening in Dahuofang waterhouse, China.

Abstract:The morphological visualization method is improved by introducing the separating axes method to the element-block aggregation algorithm and the weighted quick-union method to the complex-block construction algorithm to enhance the computational efficiency of BLKLAB (Zhang and Lei, 2013a). The usage and effectiveness of the modified BLKLAB code are demonstrated through a case study of Xiang'an tunnel in Xiamen City of China. In this case study, the DifFUZZY method was employed to cluster the orientation data and probabilistic analysis was then performed to get a combination of geological and mechanical properties of discontinuities that is most detrimental to the stability of rock blocks and associated ground-supports. Based on these previous analyses, the fracture network was constructed. The stability of rock blocks around the tunnel was then evaluated, using the improved morphological visualization method in conjunction with the stereo-analytical method. A combination of shot concrete and bolts was proposed as the optimal support system, which agrees with the real situation.

A new block-classification method for tunnel construction using a tunnel-boring machine (TBM) to capture the geometrical and mechanical transformation of rock blocks in the course of TBM excavation is proposed in this paper. The machine-block interaction is interpreted by dividing the joint blocks into blocks influenced by TBM excavation and blocks uninfluenced by TBM excavation. The influenced blocks are categorized further as contacting or noncontacting blocks according to whether they are in contact with the TBM. The contacting blocks include the front block, the corner block, and the rear block, based on the spatial location of blocks with respect to the cutterhead. Different types of blocks have distinct kinematic and mechanical characteristics. The sizes and shapes evolve, and the categories may be changed for rock blocks during excavation. The identification algorithms for influenced blocks and three types of contacting blocks are presented. Finally, a simple example considering a double-shield TBM tunnel excavation is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the new block-classification approach to guide TBM tunneling. The new classification approach will be helpful in evaluating the block removability and the possibility of cutterhead clogging and to shield blockage during tunneling with a TBM.

Abstract:In order to study the mechanical response of a hard rock tunnel excavated by double shield tunnel boring machine (DS-TBM), a numerical method was introduced to simulate the TBM excavating process. The failure modes of surrounding rock mass described based on the cohesion weakening and frictional strengthening (CWFS) Mohr-Coulomb strain-softening criterion. The characteristics of stress field and plastic zone on the cross and longitudinal section of the tunnel were analyzed in detail, and the results were compared with those in the intrinsic condition (when TBM model is not activated). The simulation results indicate that the stress paths at the vault are relatively simple, and the stress concentration caused by excavation unloading is obviously reduced by lining and backfill grouting, while the sidewall is less disturbed by the excavation of TBM. The invert experiences three unloading processes, due to excavation, the contact between the rear shield and the bottom of surrounding rock, as well as backfill grouting at gap between the lining and the rock mass. The vault has a larger plastic zone than the invert, attributing to the geometrical difference between the cutter-head and the front shield, as well as the conicity of the front and rear shields. The area of plastic zones gradually increases along the tunnel route, but it becomes stable after the rear shield.
An Improved Numerical Approach in Surrounding Rock Incorporating Rockbolt Effectiveness and Seepage Force

Abstract:The solutions of stress and displacement of a circular opening excavated in brittle and strain-softening rock mass incorporating rockbolts effectiveness and seepage force are presented in this study. The evolution equation is reconstructed for the strength parameters that incorporate these factors. Based on the evolution equation, an improved numerical method and stepwise procedure are presented which are compatible with the Mohr–Coulomb (M–C) and the generalized Hoek–Brown (H–B) failure criteria, respectively. Then given three interaction mechanisms between rockbolts and surrounding rock, solutions for stress and displacement are proposed in line with the improved numerical method and numerical stepwise procedure. The proposed approach can be reduced to Fahimifar and Soroush’s (Tunn Undergr Space Technol 20:333–343, 2005) solutions for special cases. The proposed method was validated by field monitoring data and FLAC results of Yanzidong tunnel. Examples under the M–C and generalized H–B failure criteria for rock mass are generated through MATLAB programming. Moreover, parametric studies are conducted to highlight the influence of rockbolts effectiveness in combination with seepage force on the stress and displacement of very good, average, and very poor surrounding rock. Results show that in this case, stress confinement is higher and tunnel convergences are lower than the corresponding stresses and displacements obtained in non-reinforced tunnels. Displacement and plastic radius are also higher than those without considering seepage force.

Abstract:The intrinsic geological characteristics of a jointed rock mass include rock mass structure,in-situ stress of the primary rock mass and groundwater,which results in unfavorable geological conditions like fracture zones,soft rocks with large deformation and zones with abundant groundwater.TBM driving in the jointed rock mass is affected by these rock mass characteristics and geological conditions,while the rock mass is disturbed by the TBM construc-tion,leading to instability of the surrounding rock.Unfavorable factors such as improper geological exploration and inappropriate selection of TBM types can also trigger or facilitate instability of the surrounding rock.The instability of rock masses may occur in front of the excavation face or around the periphery of the tunnel,or a combination of the two.A 3D visualization model of a jointed rock mass is established to simulate TBM tunneling in jointed rock masses using the developed software package BLKLAB based on block theory.Removable blocks and key blocks of surrounding rock on the excavation face and around tunnel periphery are identified.

Abstract:Block theory has been widely used in analyzing the stability of rock blocks during engineering activities in jointed rock masses due to its simplicity and computational efficiency. This paper extended the traditional block theory to tunnels constructed using tunnel boring machine (TBM) by incorporating the disc cutter-block interaction mechanism. The rock blocks were divided into front, corner and rear blocks according to their spatial positions with respect to the cutterhead. The interaction between different blocks and the disc cutters mounted on the cutterhead were examined by estimating the forces exerted by disc cutters on the blocks relative to the location of the blocks in the face, direction of movement of the discs, and the depth of penetration. The estimated forces were then used in a subsequent analysis to calculate factor of safety for individual blocks and probability of blocks dislodging from its location. Two new evaluation parameters, eA and eη, were proposed to account for the probability of block instability. eA is the ratio of exposed area of unstable blocks to the face area and quantifies the size of unstable blocks relative to the face, and eη is the ratio of cutterhead rotation angles making a block unstable to the total rotation angles in a revolution which reflects the possibility of encountering an unstable block during a single round of revolution. This paper discussed the implementation of the idea of using fundamental concepts of block theory to determine block stability at the face and related analysis for assessment of face stability. The proposed method was used in evaluation of the stability conditions for a water-conveyance tunnel in western China that is currently under construction using a hard rock TBM.

Abstract:The accurate prediction of rock cutting forces of disc cutters is crucial for tunnel boring machine (TBM) design and construction. Disc cutter wear, which affects TBM penetration performance, has frequently been found at TBM sites. By considering the operating path and wear of the disc cutter, a new model is proposed for evaluating the cutting force and wear of the disc cutter in the tunneling process. The circular path adopted herein, which is the actual running path of the TBM disc cutter, shows that the lateral force of the disc cutter is asymmetric. The lateral forces on the sides of the disc cutter are clearly different. However, traditional solutions are obtained by assuming a linear path, where the later forces are viewed as equal. To simulate the interaction between the rock and disc cutter, a simple brittle damage model for rock mass is introduced here. Based on the explicit dynamic finite element method, the cutting force acting on the rock generated by a single disc cutter is simulated. It is shown that the lateral cutting force of the disc cutter strongly affects the wear extent of disc cutter. The wear mechanism is thus underestimated by the classical model, which was obtained by linear cutting tests. The simulation results are discussed and compared with other models, and these simulation results agree well with the results of present ones.

Abstract:Combining the results of detailed field investigation, laboratory tests, and numerical simulations, this paper studies the rockfall problem above a tunnel portal. The mechanism of potential rock instability was analyzed, and model tests were conducted based on geological conditions and described in detail, so as to study the restitution coefficients used in programs simulating rockfall trajectory. Improvements in the tests were made in terms of experimental techniques and creative similar materials. A newly developed test bench was built by steel frames and can be assembled or disassembled at will according to requirement of model size. An innovative block-release device was adopted and controlled by computer to change the release position of block. During the model construction, the slope and blocks were fabricated with similar materials developed through quantities of mixing proportion tests. Then experiments were conducted with varied shape, mass, and release height of blocks to clarify their effect on restitution coefficients. Results indicate that restitution coefficients are apparently related to these factors and their values decrease when block mass and releasing height increase. Restitution coefficients of the wedge block are larger than those of a sphere or cuboid block. Subsequently, numerical simulations adopting the calibrated parameters were performed, and the velocities, bounce heights, and kinetic energies of rockfall along the slope profiles were obtained. Based on the research, this paper provides a useful reference for practical remediation design.

Abstract:This paper presents a new analytical solution for deep circular tunnels in rock with consideration of disturbed zone, 3D strength and large strain. The rock is assumed to be elastic–brittle–plastic and governed by a 3D Hoek–Brown yield criterion. To take the large displacement around a tunnel into account, the large-strain theory is adopted to determine the displacement of rock in the plastic zone. Based on the equilibrium equation, constitutive law and large-strain theory, the governing equations for the stresses and radial displacement around the tunnel were derived and solved by using MATLAB. The proposed solution was validated by using it to analyze a tunnel and comparing the results with those from numerical analysis using a finite difference code. Finally, extensive parametric studies were performed on tunnels in both poor-quality and good-quality rock masses with respect to stresses and radial displacement. The results indicate that the disturbed zone and the flow rule both have significant effects on the stress and displacement distributions around the tunnel.

Abstract:Surrounding rock of tunnel is cut into blocks by structural planes. Tunnel excavation breaks the mechanical balance of the blocks in the natural state. Dynamic loads may promote the slip of a block toward a free surface, which will cause the failure of surrounding rock. However, most applications of block theory only consider the effect of gravity without taking blasting vibration load and seismic load into account. Blasting vibration load and seismic load are transformed into equivalent static loads, and the most unfavorable direction of dynamic load is calculated where the safety factor of block is the lowest. The vector analysis method of block theory is applied to analyze the stability of surrounding rock mass in tunnel considering the effect of dynamic load as well as gravity. The calculated results for Changgang tunnel show that the safety factor of block under dynamic load is obviously lower than that only considering the effect of gravity. Under the action of dynamic load, the original stable block can be turned into a key block and leads to surrounding rock failure, which is consistent with the actual destruction phenomenon recorded in Changgang tunnel.
