Abstract:The prospective bias is a salient feature of mind wandering in healthy adults, yet little is known about the temporal focus of children's mind wandering. In the present study, (I) we developed the temporal focus of mind wandering questionnaire for school-age children (TFMWQ-C), a 12-item scale with good test-retest reliability and construct validity. (II) The criterion validity was tested by thought sampling in both choice reaction time task and working memory task. A positive correlation was found between the temporal focus measured by the questionnaire and the one adopted during task-unrelated thoughts (TUTs) by thought sampling probes, especially in the trait level of future-oriented mind wandering. At the same time, children who experienced more TUTs tended to show worse behavioral performance during tasks. (III) The children in both tasks experienced more future-oriented TUTs than past-oriented ones, which was congruent with the results observed in adults; however, in contrast with previous research on adults, the prospective bias was not influenced by task demands. Together these results indicate that the prospective bias of mind wandering has emerged since the school-age (9 similar to 13 years old), and that the relationship between mental time travel (MTT) during mind wandering and the use of cognitive resources differs between children and adults. Our study provides new insights into how this interesting feature of mind wandering may adaptively contribute to the development of children's MTT.
A Left-to-right Mental Timeline in Chinese Context

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that past and future temporal concepts are represented in terms of space(The past is onto left part of the timeline and the future is onto right part of the timeline).However,the findings from across-culture studies of spatial representations of time are not consistent.Researchers found that the direction of reading/writing in a language affects the way people represent time.People who read/write left to right represent time spatially from left to right,while people who read/write right to left show the reverse pattern.The purpose of this study is to investigate whether Chinese speakers(read/write left to right) tend to conceptualize time as running from left to right. A total of 28 undergraduate and graduate students(age range:19-28 years;21 females and 7 males) participated in the study.All of them were native Chinese speakers.A total of 48 temporal words of Chinese were used,half of them referring to past time and the other half referring to future time.The participant responded to each target object by pressing the key("F"or"J") on the computer keybord.Experiment 1 was conducted with a 2(words Location:left/right)×2(response side:left/right)×2(temporal reference: past/future) within-subject design,to examine whether participants can classify the temporal reference of a word faster when the stimulus -response assignment was congruent with the assumed mental left-to-right representation of time.Experiment 2 aims at further investigating whether time words bias spatial attention,by a modified version of the spatial cuing paradigm as used in Santiago et.al studies. A word' s temporal reference was kept in working memory while participants carried out a spatial localization.It was conducted with a 2 (temporal reference:past/future)×2(dot location;left/right).The dependent variable was the RT time of the subjects push-button, in both Experiment 1 and Experiment 2. The findings are as following.In Experiment 1,a STEARC effect was observed.Past words were judged faster when presented to the left and/or responded by the left hand,and future words were judged faster when presented to the right and/or responded by the right hand,which showed a clear time-space congruency during online processing of temporal words.The results are consistent with the view that time is mentally represented from left to right.The past is located to the left and the future to the right in a mental time line. Experiment 2 found that right dots/targets were responded to faster than left dots/targets following future cues,and left dots/targets were responded to faster than right dots/targets following past cues.The results showed that temporal reference was able to orient attention a- long the left-right axis the past shifting attention to the left and the future shifting attention to the right. In conclusion,the study shows the existence of a mental timeline that runs from the left to the right in Chinese Context.The findings are consistent with the space-time conceptual metaphor theory.Abstract concepts of time are represented in terms of concrete dimensions of space.Furthermore,this study also provides experimental support for the assumption that the mapping from space to time takes place at the conceptual level rather than at the level of linguistic expressions.

Abstract:Subjects read narratives describing directions of objects around an upright observer, who was periodically reoriented, and given a description of the objects in different positions around his body.Two-factor experiment supported that there were two stages in identifying which object was currentlylocated at the observer’s front, back, right, and left. The first stage was identifying the directionassigned to the spatial relation by the relevant axis of the reference frame. The pattern of process timewas front < back < right = left, the second stage was identifying the object in the probed directions.The pattern of process time was focus < opposition to focus < left to focus = right to focus. Abstract:The effect of interaction characteristics such as display size and active/passive navigation on spatial representation was investigated when participants repeatedly navigated complex three-dimensional virtual maze. The study was divided into two main phases: learning and test. Participants navigated respectively under active or passive navigation style and two display sizes condition during learning phase. Spatial representation was examined by testing estimation of directions in the environment. Participants judged more accurately in active navigation and large projection display condition than in passive navigation and desktop monitor condition. Findings further show that the effects of active or passive navigation style and display size on spatial representation are dependent.

Abstract:The present study mainly investigated the direction effect in orientation based on YAH(You Are Here) map.90 subjects were assigned to three within-sub-ject experiments.Absolute heading direction judgment, relative location judgment and relative location judgment in different heading directions(misalignment) were executed respectively.The results indicated that the absolute heading direction effect and north advantage were significant in Exp1,mainly represented as0°(90°/180°/270°)(45°/135°/ 225°/315°).The relative location effect was significant but no significant front advantage effect was found in Exp2,mainly represented as(0°/90°/ 180°/270°)(45°/135°/225°/315°).The relative location effect and front advantage were significant in Exp3,mainly represented as0°(90°/ 180°/270°)(45°//315°)(135°/225°),and such representation was independent of absolute heading direction.Thus,the direction effect in orientation based on YAH(You-Are-Here) map was mainly represented as absolute heading direction effect and relative location effect,and the latter was independent of absolute heading direction.
Waldo Reveals Cultural Differences in Return Fixations

Abstract:ABSTRACT Humans routinely perform visual search towards targets to adapt to the environment. These sequences of ballistic eye movements are shaped by a combination of top–down and bottom–up factors. Recent research documented that human observers display cultural-specific fixation patterns in a range of visual processing tasks. In particular, eye movement strategies extracting information from faces clearly differs between Western Caucasian (WC) and East Asian (EA) observers. However, whether such cultural differences are also present for visual scene processing remains debated. To this aim, we recorded the eye movements of WC and EA observers while they were solving visual search problems parametrically varying in difficulty: Where’s Waldo. Both groups had a comparable familiarity with the Waldo books reaching a comparable level of accuracy in target detection. Both cultural groups also showed a comparable temporal effect on inhibition of return, with longer fixation durations when saccades were performed to a return location compared to other locations. Westerners, however, located Waldo faster than Easterners. Interestingly, this modulation of speed was likely related to differences occurring on the low-level mechanisms of spatial inhibition of return, with EA observers returning more often to previously visited locations than the WC observers. This suboptimal eye movement strategy in the Easterners might be engendered by their cultural perceptual bias consisting in⁠ a greater use of extra-foveal information. Overall, our data point towards the existence of a subtle, but significant difference in the processing of visual scenes across observers from different cultures during active visual search.
Visual Search May Not Require Target Representation in Working Memory or Long-Term Memory.

Abstract:We spend a lot of time searching for things. If we know what we are looking for in advance, a memory representation of the target will be created to guide search. But if the identity of the search target is revealed simultaneously with the presentation of the search array, is a similar memory representation formed? In the present study, 96 observers determined whether a central target was present in a peripheral search array. The results revealed that as long as the central target remained available for inspection (even if only in iconic memory), observers reinspected it after each distractor was checked, apparently forgoing consolidation of the target into working memory. The present findings challenged the assumption that evaluating items in a search array must involve comparison with a template in working memory.

Abstract:Mandarin speakers, like most other language speakers around the world, use spatial terms to talk about time. However, the direction of their mental temporal representation along the front-back axis remains controversial because they use the spatial term "front" to refer to both earlier times (e.g., front-year means "the year before last") and the future (e.g., front-road means "prospect"). Although the linguistic distinction between time- and ego-reference-point spatiotemporal metaphors in Mandarin suggests a promising clarification of the above controversy, there is little empirical evidence verifying this distinction. In this study, Mandarin speakers' time- and ego-reference-point temporal representations on three axes (i.e., sagittal, lateral, and vertical) were separately examined through two tasks. In a time-reference-point task, Mandarin speakers judged whether the time point of the second picture was earlier or later than the time point of the first picture, while in an ego-reference-point task, they judged whether an event or phase had happened in the past or would happen in the future. The results indicate that Mandarin speakers construe an earlier-times-in-front-of-later-times temporal sequence and adopt the front-to-the-future orientation.

Abstract:The conceptual projection of time onto the domain of space constitutes one of the most challenging issues in the cognitive embodied theories. In Chinese, spatial order (e.g.,/da shu qian/, in front of a tree) shares the same terms with temporal sequence (", /san yue qian/, before March). In comparison, English natives use different sets of prepositions to describe spatial and temporal relationship, i.e., "before" to express temporal sequencing and "in front of" to express spatial order. The linguistic variations regarding the specific lexical encodings indicate that some flexibility might be available in how space-time parallelisms are formulated across different languages. In the present study, ERP (Event-related potentials) data were collected when Chinese-English bilinguals processed temporal ordering and spatial sequencing in both their first language (L1) Chinese (Experiment 1) and the second language (L2) English (Experiment 2). It was found that, despite the different lexical encodings, early sensorimotor simulation plays a role in temporal sequencing processing in both L1 Chinese and L2 English. The findings well support the embodied theory that conceptual knowledge is grounded in sensory-motor systems (Gallese and Lakoff, Cogn Neuropsychol 22:455-479, 2005). Additionally, in both languages, neural representations during comprehending temporal sequencing and spatial ordering are different. The time-spatial relationship is asymmetric, in that space schema could be imported into temporal sequence processing but not vice versa. These findings support the weak view of the Metaphoric Mapping Theory.

Abstract:An investigation is made into a shopping mall newly built in Shanghai by tracking,recording,interviewing and questionnaires surveying.Results show that spatial differentiation is helpful to cognitive mapping and the recall of the relative position of two spatial features.As for environment without distinctive spatial differentiation,the outdoor landmarks can ameliorate cognition of the attached indoor landmark and wayfinding behavior.According to the priority level,the indoor wayfinding strategy can be ranked as orientation strategy,building configuration strategy and route strategy.The orientation strategy is the most convenient one for wayfinder.

Abstract:Time is an important factor in information retrieval studies including search evaluation, user behavior analysis and query understanding. In most of the previous works, time is usually an objective factor measured by timing devices. However, the time perceived by user seems more intuitive to describe the impact of time because search user's opinion is considered subjective. Psychological researches have reported that time perception can be affected by many physical and psychological factors. In this work, a laboratory study with 50 participants was adopted to investigate the impact of Temporal Relevance, e.g., the awareness of elapsed time, on time perception of Web search users. Experimental results show that participants in high temporal relevance environments tend to perceive significantly longer task durations than the actual ones. It shows that the perception of time can be manipulated in Web search scenario and reveals the necessity to take the factor of user perception into consideration in time-related Web search researches such as effort-based evaluation.
The Cognition of Time Shaped by Linguistic Elements: Alphabetic Language and Ideographic Language

Abstract:This study investigated the impact of language script on spatial cognition by comparing reaction times of native speakers of alphabetic languages and Chinese in response to horizontally and vertically arranged button groups. It is postulated that the linear, one-dimensional nature of alphabetic scripts may shape cognitive processing differently than the complex, two-dimensional Chinese characters. In the experiment, participants from both linguistic backgrounds were tasked with quickly responding to buttons arranged in both horizontal and vertical configurations. Results indicated that speakers of alphabetic languages exhibited significantly shorter reaction times for the horizontally oriented buttons compared to the Chinese speakers. Conversely, Chinese speakers demonstrated faster reaction times for vertically arranged buttons relative to the alphabetic language speakers. These results suggest that language script structure can influence spatial cognition. The linear, sequential arrangement inherent to alphabetic languages may predispose speakers to be more efficient in processing horizontally sequenced stimuli, while the two-dimensional structure of Chinese characters may confer an advantage in processing vertically presented information. Additionally, cultural factors, such as the traditional vertical writing and reading direction of Chinese script, may contribute to these differences. The findings provide preliminary support for the notion that language script can shape cognitive strategies for processing spatial information, with speakers of alphabetic languages and Chinese employing different strategies for horizontal and vertical spatial processing. Further research is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms, as well as the impact of early exposure to a specific script on spatial cognition.

Abstract:Our mental representation of the passage of time is structured by concepts of spatial motion, including an ego-moving perspective in which the self is perceived as approaching future events and a time-moving perspective in which future events are perceived as approaching the self. While previous research has found that processing spatial information in one's environment can preferentially activate either an ego-moving or time-moving temporal perspective, potential downstream impacts on everyday decision-making have received less empirical attention. Based on the idea people may feel closer to positive events they see themselves as actively approaching rather than passively waiting for, in this pre-registered study we tested the hypothesis that spatial primes corresponding to an ego-moving (vs. time-moving) perspective would attenuate temporal discounting by making future rewards feel more proximal. 599 participants were randomly assigned to one of three spatial prime conditions (ego-moving, time-moving, control) resembling map-based tasks people may engage with on digital devices, before completing measures of temporal perspective, perceived wait time, perceived control over time, and temporal discounting. Partly consistent with previous research, the results indicated that the time-moving prime successfully activated the intended temporal perspective–though the ego-moving prime did not. Contrary to our primary hypotheses, the spatial primes had no effect on either perceived wait time or temporal discounting. Processing spatial information in a map-based task therefore appears to influence how people conceptualise the passage of time, but there was no evidence for downstream effects on intertemporal preferences. Additionally, exploratory analysis indicated that greater perceived control over time was associated with lower temporal discounting, mediated by a reduction in perceived wait time, suggesting a possible area for future research into individual differences and interventions in intertemporal decision-making.

Abstract:People often remember relatively novel environments from the first perspective encountered or the first direction of travel. This initial perspective can determine a preferred orientation that facilitates the efficiency of spatial judgements at multiple recalled locations. The present study examined this “first-perspective alignment effect” (FPA effect). In three experiments, university students explored three-path routes through computer-simulated spaces presented on a desktop computer screen. Spatial memory was then tested employing a “judgement of relative direction” task. Contrary to the predictions of a previous account, Experiment 1 found a reliable FPA effect in barren and complex environments. Experiment 2 strongly implicated the importance of complete novelty of the space surrounding the route in producing the effect. Experiment 3 found that, while familiarity with the surrounding space greatly attenuated the FPA effect with immediate testing, the effect reemerged following a 7-day delay to testing. The implications for the encoding and retrieval of spatial reference frames are discussed.

Abstract:Due to the tremendous economic value of search result pages, search engine companies have invested a lot to improve their quality. Recently, much effort has been made to directly model key aspects of users' interactions with search system, for example, Benefit and Cost . Time has been widely adopted in both of the two aspects since benefit and cost must be expressed in meaningful units in practical application. Psychological studies have demonstrated that the subjectively perceived time might be different from the objective time measured by timing device and the time perception process of human beings is affected by some psychological factors, such as motivation and interest, which are closely related to the search process. Considering that time is usually used to describe the subject experience of search users, it is necessary to investigate the difference between perceived time and objective time in search process. In psychology, there is a temporal illusion effect named Vierordt's law , i.e. shorter intervals tend to be overestimated while longer intervals tend to be underestimated. In this work, we carefully designed a lab-study to examine the impact of duration length on user's time perception in the context of search. Experimental results show that Vierordt's law is consistently observed in Web search environment. This work could help us to correct the estimation of users' perceived time and provide insights about the mechanism of satisfaction.
Separate Storage of Temporal Order and Spatial Information in Working Memory

Abstract:This research explores the storage of temporal order information and spatial information in working memory with the paradigm of judgments of relative recency. The first experiment compared the subjects' memory for temporal order information under the condition with and without spatial cues.The result demonstrated that the spatial cue had no effect on the memory performance. In the second and third experiments,we reduced the size of the stimuli as well as the field of vi- sion,and further reduced the uncertainty of spatial information, so as to benefit the spatial cues.However, the results pattern was still the same.Therefore,we infer that temporal order information and spatial information are encoded and stored separately in working memory,so that adding spatial cue cannot improve the memory performance of temporal order.
The metaphoric nature of the ordinal position effect

Abstract:Serial orders are thought to be spatially represented in working memory: The beginning items in the memorised sequence are associated with the left side of space and the ending items are associated with the right side of space. However, the origin of this ordinal position effect has remained unclear. It was suggested that the direction of serial order-space interaction is related to the reading/writing experience. An alternative hypothesis is that it originates from the "more is right"/"more is up" spatial metaphors we use in daily life. We can adjudicate between the two viewpoints in Chinese readers; they read left-to-right but also have a culturally ancient top-to-bottom reading/writing direction. Thus, the reading/writing viewpoint predicts no or a top-to-bottom effect in serial order-space interaction; whereas the spatial metaphor theory predicts a clear bottom-to-top effect. We designed four experiments to investigate this issue. First, we found a left-to-right ordinal position effect, replicating results obtained in Western populations. However, the vertical ordinal position effect was in the bottom-to-top direction; moreover, it was modulated by hand position (e.g., left hand bottom or up). We suggest that order-space interactions may originate from different sources and are driven by metaphoric comprehension, which itself may ground cognitive processing.
English and Mandarin speakers’ mental representations of time: Some new evidence about the language-thought relationship

Abstract:The questions of whether aspects of language (spatiotemporal metaphor and/or orthography) shape temporal cognition in general and whether English and Mandarin speakers think about time differently in particular have attracted considerable attention and controversy. Focusing on these controversial issues, the present study examines and refines the findings from previous work with some new evidence. Experiment 1 used a card arrangement task in which participants were asked to arrange in order a series of cards depicting temporal sequences of natural events. Experiment 2 included the card arrangement task (the same as in Experiment 1) and a video judgment task. In the video judgment task, the stimulus presented a horizontal or a vertical array of pictures depicting a temporal sequence of natural events, and participants were asked to verify if the temporal sequence described in the pictures was in the correct order. Converging results yielded from the two experiments demonstrate that most Mandarin speakers (approximately 80%) may be identical to English speakers with regard to their salient horizontal bias for temporal cognition. Only approximately 20% of Mandarin speakers, who overwhelmingly rely on the vertical axis to reason about time, may differ from English speakers. The evidence suggests that there might be a possible relationship between language and temporal cognition, but the relationship is far more complicated and indefinite than a simple or absolute causal one. The issue of whether language plays a powerful and critical role that shapes people’s thought remains uncertain and is subject to further examinations and clarifications. Implications for theoretical and empirical issues concerning the language-thought relationship are discussed.

Abstract:<p>Across many languages, people conceptualize the past or the future as in front of them. However, the direction of the mental sagittal space-time mapping may differ across cultures, contexts, and individuals. According to the Temporal Focus Hypothesis (TFH), people's implicit space-time associations vary according to the degree to which they think about the past and the future. Previous research has revealed a variety of factors related to temporal attention that may affect spatial conceptions of time. Underexplored, however, is whether and how dispositional optimism is related to space-time associations. We propose that dispositional optimism, encouraging a future focus, can lead to a higher likelihood of future-in-front mapping. In Studies 1 (N = 146) and 2 (N = 195), we tested this prediction in Han Chinese student and non-student populations, respectively. In Study 3 (N = 85), we explored this linkage in an additional population, the Qiang minority in China. Results from these studies consistently showed that participants, who tended to map the future in front, exhibited higher degree of dispositional optimism than those who mapped past events in front. These findings provided the first evidence that individual differences in dispositional optimism may influence people's spatial-temporal thinking, supporting the TFH.</p>

Horizontal mapping of time-related words in first and second language

Abstract:The existence of a consistent horizontal spatial-conceptual mapping for words denoting time is a well-established phenomenon. For example, words related to the past or future (e.g., yesterday/tomorrow) facilitate respective leftward/rightward attentional shifts and responses, suggesting the visual-spatial grounding of temporal semantics, at least in the native language (L1). To examine whether similar horizontal bias also accompanies access to time-related words in a second language (L2), we tested 53 Russian-English (Experiment 1) and 48 German-English (Experiment 2) bilinguals, who classified randomly presented L1 and L2 time-related words as past- or future-related using left or right response keys. The predicted spatial congruency effect was registered in all tested languages and, furthermore, was positively associated with higher L2 proficiency in Experiment 2. Our findings (1) support the notion of horizontal spatial-conceptual mapping in diverse L1s, (2) demonstrate the existence of a similar spatial bias when processing temporal words in L2, and (3) show that the strength of time-space association in L2 may depend on individual L2 proficiency.
