Abstract:Particle-reinforced titanium matrix composites (PTMCs), as a new type of lightweight high-temperature structural materials, have a broad application prospect in aerospace and advanced automotive fields, owing to their excellent fatigue-resistance ability, as well as high-temperature toughness and hardness properties. Grinding with cubic boron nitride (CBN) superhard abrasive wheels plays a continuous growth role in achieving high-efficiency ultimate precision, and desired surface quality of components. However, high grinding temperatures, fast tool wear, and numerous machining defects appear during conventional grinding (CG) processes due to the presence of reinforcement phases within PTMCs. In this paper, a radial ultrasonic vibration–assisted grinding (RUVAG) equipment is proposed and fabricated to achieve the reduction of tool wears and high machined surface quality. Results show that radial ultrasonic vibrating amplitudes have great influences on material removal mechanism and abrasive wear properties. When the amplitude reaches 5 μm, the synergistic removal of reinforcement phases (i.e., TiC particles and TiB short fibers) and Ti–6Al–4 V matrix materials was achieved in terms of micro-fracture morphology of grains, machined surface defects, and evolutions of average pile-up ratio after employing radial ultrasonic vibrations into CG processes. Meanwhile, the normal grinding force was increased by 5.1–14.8% and the grinding temperature was reduced by 37.2% under the RUVAG process, resulting from the radial hammering action and interrupted cutting state between workpiece and grains. Additionally, radial ultrasonic vibration facilitates the transverse expansion of cracks within the reinforcing particles and promotes microfracture behavior, leading to a significant reduction in surface defects. This study helps to promote the engineering application of PTMCs, and also provides a practical reference and theoretical basis for realizing high quality and efficient processing of other difficult-to-machine materials.
